I have to say, the opening scene established Noa perfectly. He loves his friends, he wants to prove himself, and he values tradition, but he's capable of thinking outside the box. We get all these things within three minutes of his introduction.

I loved that Mae and Noah didnt end the movie being best friends. There’s timid respect between the two, but the movie didn’t force a relationship (nor would it have made sense for them to.) The last 10-15 minutes did so much character-building for Mae that I didn’t expect and it just makes me want a sequel immediately

One thing I appreciated was the depiction of Mae’s morality and how it’s not just black and white. Like yes she’s a protagonist of the film and is aligned with the good guys, but then it’s revealed she’s not telling the whole truth and has ulterior motives. And even if they were bad guys, she still took A LOT of ape lives when she blew up the damn.
Her character clearly has one set goal and that’s to get that satellite hard drive to the surviving human base, but I feel they’re setting her up for some sort of “redemption arc” in a future movie.
Perhaps she comes to know the humans and see how they’re just as bad as Proximus’ apes and decides to team up with Noah for real this time to reveal the truth about humanity’s return, maybe sacrificing herself to SAVE apes this time rather than to KILL them

I think the Caesar trilogy could have done with a bit more depth in terms of characterisation of the human characters. It was a bit one-dimensional in that you could always immediately label the characters as "good" or "evil". They fixed this in Kingdom with Mae.

What Mae did was right from her point of view. She is trying to save the human race. She has no reason to trust the apes after they killed the people she was travelling with. Also killing Trevathan was the right thing to do as he was about to betray them to Proximus. As for blowing up the dam. She had to stop Proximus getting the weapons in the silo. If he had got hold of them it would have been bad for both humans and apes.

I like that Mae was ambiguous. I think that fits how a human would be in her circumstance. As an audience we root for the apes. But we would tear them down in a second if this really happened. I feel like Mae incapsulates that. She does not trust them. She will betray them to fit her goals. She wants them gone. Where Trevathan submits to the circumstances, Mae fights against it. I really love the shot of her face as Proximus is giving his speech to the apes. It just screams “this is unholy/unnatural”. The colonel even said to Caesar that he leads an unholy Kingdom. That’s how humans WOULD view it. She will do what needs to be done for humanity. But at the same time she sees the humanity in Noa by the end. Where you can see it makes her a bit conflicted. I really like their last conversation. “Should we go back to silence?”. Great line. Apes can never go back at this point. And humans will never take this lying down. Perfect encapsulation of their conflict. Also I love the final shot. Where her and Noa are both looking to the sky wondering what’s next. Great note to leave on.

One of my favourite parts of this film is how it comments on multiculturalism through Noah VS a uniform monoculture under Proximus. In Noahs heroes journey he learns about the different Ape and human ways of life that differ from his own, and he embraces them. He dosent suddenly believe in Caesar more than his eagle clan culture, but he listens to Caesar’s teachings and applies them to his own quest of freeing his people. This is the opposite of Proximus whos only uses Caesar to enforce his singular mission for the apes. His goal is to have apes in the same role that humans were in before they fell. So hes capturing as many apes as he can and uniting them under 1 banner so he can make a human style city with the vaults human technology. He doesn’t consider any Ape culture other than his own, including the eagle tribe who he subjugates so he can break into the Vault, and it’s pointed out that he has no use for the eagles. It’s this ignorance of the different ape cultures that are his undoing as Noah uses his unique eagle taming culture to defeat Proximus.

I am kinda conflicted on the usage of Proximus. I love everything they did with him, and I think he’s a great character. But I do feel he needed to be in it more to have more of an impact. At the same time though. His impact is felt much more than just when he’s on screen. Noa’s clan if attacked in his name. Everything that really happens is because of him. His presence looms long before you ever meet him. Which part of me says makes up for lack of screen time. But another part says that that we still needed to spend more time with him in order for us to get the most out of him. There’s an A+ villain in there somewhere, just feels like they get the most out of him.

As a real life Bird Nerd and someone who plans to become a Falconer and has flown birds of prey, I found the eagles very satisfying. Obviously, that makes me bias and a lifetime of experience tells me that the eagles were explored in this movie about as much as they really could without loosing the audience. Lastly, as great as the CGI was, A LOT of the eagle movements were the most obviously fake in terms of "what looks real" AND I'm ok with that. I know my passions are extremely niche. I really love this movie and the way it ended. Part of me believes Raka is still alive 100%, but 45% of me believes Proximus Caesar is alive. I would love to see Noa’s villian era alongside a Proximus Caesar origin story (I’m refuse to accept his ending 😂), but they could do the story like The Godfather Part II. I feel like that story would be amazing, getting Proximus backstory as Noa is entering his villian era (which I believe would be temporary, but Noa has to have this era for this reboot to set it’s own identity). Loved the film. As a big PotA fanatic myself, I agree with everything. I really expected a line from Noa calling out Proximus, "you are not Ceasar."
I could see the apes evolving very rapidly by the 7th film. The apes jumped tens of thousands of years, developing necessary vocal chords and higher brain function in a matter of years. So it's not a stretch that we will see them jump to the space age by the end of the 6th.

Noah is great protagonist not as good as Caesar but I know his character development will grow. Proximus Caesar played by Kevin Durand is just great he’s the sole reason why I went to see this I wish there was more of the character. @jonmercano1138 4 месяца назад +5

I enjoyed this one the least, but that’s only because the Caesar trilogy is so good. I still enjoyed this one quite a bit. Still do after a second watch. 7/10
I really like seeing another ape society prospering on it’s own but further along in their development towards civilization, with everyone speaking in mostly complete sentences and having unique customs based on their falconry.
I’m surprised in your spoiler free review you only named Proximus as someone who could’ve used more screentime. I was shocked that we lost Raka as early as we did, or even at all! But I have a thought on that later. (I found out about the after credits thing but it was only described as ape noises, so I didn’t stick around. Definitely interesting if it’s orangutan noises, would not object to Raka’s return.)
Speaking of, Proximus is pretty great, Durand does an excellent job in the role, and I definitely could’ve used more of him. The way you talked about his end in the spoiler free made me think maybe he was gonna win, and/or kill Noa. Especially when the vault was opened and he showed interest in the guns, since apes do have them in the original.
Mae is interesting to me in that she’s not as hardcore anti-ape as Carver or McCullough, but definitely not pro-ape. I guess she’s a lot more like Dreyfus, wanting to secure humanity’s survival and willing to eliminate anyone who gets in the way of that, even if it’s only potentially.
Conisdering the ending, I wonder if Raka’s absence as the last of the order of caesar will have an impact on the way apes see humans. The eagle clan already saw them as pests to be scared off, but Noa comes to believe in distrusting smarter ones thanks to Mae’s self serving actions and desire to give the world back to humans. That’s basically a Zaius mindset, but Noa at least is just unsure of the idea coexistance rather than completely against it.
In addition to that, Raka didn’t say the third Caesar law _Knowledge is power._ And not only that, I don’t remember that law even being unobstructed enough to fully see in Dawn. Maybe the novelization confirmed it. Either way, even with Raka, who wants the truth of Caesar’s teachings known, the importance of knowledge isn’t fully carrying over. And there’s plenty of knowledge suppression in the original.
Also about the ending, seeing Mae had her hand on the gun behind her back made me the most tense I was during the movie! I was so relieved when she didn’t shoot him.
Also also! It seems like this timeline could be veering a bit into the territory of the show. The astronauts’ main goal in that was to find a computer to read a data disk that could help them find a way back to their time. Plus something from a short story in Tales from the Forbidden Zone.
Or, these uninfected humans could be the start of this timeline’s version of the alpha omega mutants
I don’t wanna make this longer so I’ll do the rest short 😅. Liked Noa & friends, coulda used more for Proximus hench-apes and Koro, some things could’ve been executed better like what you said for Sylva, the eagles, and Noa vs Proximus.

I loved the movie and agree with a couple of points you’ve made. Had they spent more time with developing the relationship between Noah and his father we would’ve better understood more about the eagles. As a result they would’ve meant more to us in the end. I was able to develop in my mind what the eagles were to Noah’s tribe(they were a means of food capture, communication and obviously as we saw in the end, protection). Ball did a great job and yes the CGI is fantastic but I also enjoyed the aspect of being able to see the actor in each ape. I was able to see and I enjoyed it yet was glad it wasn’t too much. Overall the film is good and a worthy addition to the Apes franchise. Because the characters were so captivating, I never felt bored despite feeling it drag a little. Raka is definitely my favorite character and I hope the next film reveals his survival.
I do like how Noa and Mae despite being good people are still skeptical of one another and aren't automatically promoting peace between humans and apes like Caesar did but also aren't hostile. Of course the acting and special effects are grand.
My only nitpicks are that I wanted Proximus Caesar to live on, if he did indeed die, and be a recurring villain for at least another film.
The other being the ending. Im not mad or anything like that but feel kinda meh about intelligent humans still being around and now being able to contact each other. I think because the previous two films already dealt with intelligent human survivors and apes opposing each other, I was hoping that aspect was done so we could truly see this world being ran by the apes with Mae being the exception. I just hope they dont essentially tell the same story as Dawn or War in the next film

There were some logic errors in the movie like e.g. why weren't the Apes, mainly the ones who have the same ideology as Proximus Caesar, able to find weapons in different places of California. You really want to tell me that in 300 YEARS you were not able to go to an abandoned police station or military base where there must be at least some weapons left behind by humans. I guess that will be explored more in the future Sequels but right now they are logic errors for me.

But the second time....God....I rewatched a third time already. I TOTALLY ENJOY every character and every part of their World.
Caesar's funeral was a huge surprise. I LOVED to see Maurice and Rocket there.
NOA and his friends introduction tells everything about them.
I felt a blue eyes's POV in noa as he see his father. Thinking he is not good enough....and wanting his approval. But in this case the one who died is the father.
Proximus is amazing. I think there is more of his story that could be explore. I hope he is not death. I WOULD LOVE to see him and noa having to make an alliance in the future.
Raka was lovable. Love his expresions.
Mae is a double face. She used noa to reach her goal. I NEVER expected that. She is stuck in a past she never lost. She never lived in.
The only thing I hate and I want an explanation is that they used rocket's model as a NPC. 😢 why? He was an important character in the trilogy. Why used his model again as irrelevant?

Hi, hope your well? Thanks for yet another excellent video this time on Kingdom of the planet of the apes. I saw it at the cinema here in Scotland on Tuesday evening and the place was packed. I loved it. To me it’s stands proud along side Rise, Dawn and War and hopefully more films including Noa. I loved the opening scene with Caesar’s funeral with Maurice, Rocket etc it made me cry. I also loved the scenes with Noa trying to interact with the eagle and hanging out with his two friends. Raja’s death was so unexpected it knocked the wind out of me. I was hoping he’d be in more movies because he seemed so knowledgeable about our Caesar. Proximus was a great villian i thought he was a little miss understood at times but seemed like he wanted to learn he just let the power go to his head a bit. I thought his followers were much worse. Never the end i didn’t like Mae because she tried to drown all the apes including Noa and when they met for the last time she had the gun behind her back. i thought she was going to shoot Noa. I loved the eagles finally reacting to Noa too. Apologies if i’ve mentioned spoilers . in case anyone hasn’t seen it yet what are you waiting for? Do you think Proximus survived his fall? Where do you think the story will go from here? Finally what are Mae and the other humans up to?. Thanks again. Take care 😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #ApesTogethetStrong ❤️ #CaesarNeverForgotten ❤️💔😭🤧 #TeamNoa ❤️

I always said Wes Ball was a perfect pick. Maze Runner trilogy was actually impressively accomplished in every technical sense of directorial craft - it's been obvious that James Cameron is Wes Ball's spirit animal - if anyone bothered to notice.
I'm not so sure this isn't actually the best of the series. Hard to say because I loved the Matt Reeves entries. But Kingdom is certainly the most sprawling with the most world building. It's sort of not the same genre as the others, because it's a quest adventure. There's nothing I didn't like about it.

I do think raka would come back. He only appears in the 1st movie of a trilogy so far (and not that much imo), while koba was introduced in the 1st movie and is the main antagonist of the 2nd movie. Koba was much more fleshed out and its easier to consider his story complete.

  • @melindamercier6811
    @melindamercier6811 3 месяца назад +1

Storywise, this was impressively well-done. But I had a few gripes about this movie. Though overall the world-building was great, I think they missed the mark on introducing this new world properly. I know many who were initially stuck trying to figure out how the hawk-raising apes were connected to Caesar’s apes until the antagonists came along. But thankfully the movie does a great job filling in those gaps on its own. The hawks/eagles culture could’ve been explored a but better. Felt like they introduced us to this ape tribe with a new culture, and they dove deep enough into the culture to make it important to the movie, but not deep enough to understand it. The rest of my gripes have mainly to do with a lowered bar for casting and what they did with humans. Why does Mae, a woman who’s been traveling the ape world jungle, look like she’s got eyelash extensions and pounds of makeup on with a bit of mud smeared on her face? And why did they cast someone who struggled so painfully with an American accent? Either let her use her own accent or pick an American. It was really weird. Zuna/Suna’s voice immediately took me out of the movie from the very beginning. It was so modern and didn’t match the other apes, it felt very un-ape-like (within these movies) whereas the two males in the beginning made grunts and oo’s and retained an animalistic grit to their voices that was paced in a recognizable way. Granted, it got better when we reunite with her character, but a grittier female voice would’ve been a better choice.
I like where this movie is going. The “tube that eats light” or whatever they said? That sounds like they’re going to explore a black hole/wormhole concept, and connect it with the first movie (and by proxy, the original movies) given the missing astronauts mentioned in Rise.
Overall, this movie was really really good. But not quite at the same level of the Caesar trilogy for me. Dawn was a near perfect movie. That’s a high bar. But I’m hopeful for the rest of the movies in Noa’s trilogy.

In my initial viewing, I didn't like Mae because she comes across as a bit of a sociopath, which was not where I was expecting her character to go. However, in my second viewing, I did notice that she definitely displays moments of empathy, I just missed them. I think her character would benefit most with further development in a sequel, so I hope she comes back.
I loved the world building and the setting in this one, and I really want a video game set in this world, even though I know that won't happen.
The more I sit on this one, the more I love it. I feel pretty confident in saying it is my second favorite behind War. I do wish Proximus and Silva both had more screentime. I hope Wes Ball gets to do his director's cut one day because I would be interested in a longer cut of the film.

My personal take on the movie is that I enjoyed it. My only gripes are 2 things,
    1. Mae switched personality with little prior suspicion. With Koba and Winter you got a sense that something was wrong over time and that just added to the effect it had when you found out what they’d done/would do. I felt that Mae’s sudden confession (that she has a name) came with little introduction earlier in the film (no wondering why she did this or that - until that point she was «just another Echo») as well as her sudden intelligence (knowing so much). I think they could have made her character a slower burn, creating suspense with every time she admitted something new. Also the «twist» at the end, little build-up suspicion to that too
    2. I do feel now that the Roman influence on the movie made more sense in the story, but when I watched the movie for the first time, it made me roll my eyes. I did feel at that time that the Roman theme was a very easy and quick way to make a story, which didn’t feel very nuanced to me. It also made a clear «good-guy vs bad-guy» situation which is what i loved about the last trilogy, there wasn’t clear sides to take. But thinking over it in the following weeks I realise I am very excited to see where this series continues. It was a good movie and I enjoyed it!
    3. Also I was expecting Noah to stop after coming out the tunnel to look in awe at what he’d never seen before

kingdom is quite the inverted story of war. The gorilla clan is guarding a military base similar to the humans in War.

I loved this movie and it lived to the hype I’m super excited for more of Noa’s EE VO LUTION for the next films and my only gripe with this film is I wished we had more scenes with Proximus because of how good he was, that Vault Opening Scene with him and Noa was so good I just wanted more and I hope both him and Rakka survive cause Rakka was another one of my favorite characters in this film over all I give it an 8/10 it’s very solid and super immersive and definitely deserves the Hype

I love this movie and that scene when Noa gets the Eagles to attack Proximus is one of the coolest things I've seen in a Planet of the Apes.

The best movie of the year. The most fascinating film franchise; it feels so fantastical and ultra realistic at the same time.

One direction this could go in, that I at least would find fascinating, is some movies that follow the continued development of the ape civilization through the centuries. Then, one day, 2,000 years in the future, some random human shows up "out of the blue" that turns what the apes, and by that point we viewers, thought they knew and what they'd built, on its head. Like, a 'remake' of the 1968 original but seen from the apes' point of view, so that the Neo-Taylor is akin to an alien invasion.

I really enjoyed this film. I think it's absolutely head and shoulders above the recent Ceasar Trilogy. However I don't trust the humans that Mae is associated with. This film could really springboard onto great stuff with this new era kick off. Amazing stuff!
