Be warned, those who haven't read the book. This is NOT a romantic comedy, though you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise. It's actually based off of the author's parents' marriage, and how much she respected her mother for walking away for the sake of her children.
It's not a romcom, but the book is definitely a contemporary romance.

I never get rom com vibe from the trailer to begin with and instead looked more like a tragic romance drama which I think it's what the movie is.
Justin Baldoni bought the movie rights from the author wanting to direct the movie adaptation. It was the author who encouraged/pushed Baldoni to star as the abuser.

Man, marketing is wild. The promo I saw made this look like a quirky comedy between Blake Lively and Jenny Slate.
To be fair, Jenny Slate is one of the best parts of the movie. She’s rich and her wardrobe is amazing.

Watched it with my girlfriend last Saturday, I went in blind. This is one of those movies everyone will say it’s important, but no one will say it’s good. Even though the theme is heavy, I thought the writing was absolutely awful and it completely pulled me out of the movie
I, too, watched it with my gf, she knew the story, I was totally green, hard to call it a "good" movie, it was a wake up.call on the nature of abuse, as a filmmaker of over 50 years, it captured the topic and was a bonus for the investors, Lively herself, a shot to recoup their dough. Good on them!
from my personal experience, Colleen Hoover just kinda sucks at writing with all of her books bc she just romanticises very very delicate topics so i hope that at the very least, this movie tries to somewhat improve in it's commentary 💀
Agreed. Also, she sucks at writing male characters. Most of her male characters are either horny or angry, with very little in-between.

As someone who's never read the novel, and normally wouldn't go watch this at the theater, I found the movie to be good at delivering its message without romanticized stuff, and not insulting its audience. I appreciated it and found the pacing to be actually decently good(I was concerned when I saw the runtime).
There were some things that were portrayed in a clever way that makes the audience feel more in touch with how these things go, and as someone who hates cliche romantic movies, the love interest topic was JUST the right amount and didn't overstay its welcome.
We share the same opinion, but I was curious about this one and let me tell you this was the exception to “her”rule. The book was surprisingly good! And believe me, I hate romantic books… eww. I like a dark, toxic and challenging story. She tried to do it again with “Verity” but nah… she just doesn’t have it.
I enjoyed it, it followed the book and didn’t glorify abuse at all. It actually glorified leaving your abuser at the end of the film

I do wonder if a woman critic reviewed Oppenheimer and All Quiet in the Western Front, if you'd also praise her for being "open-minded"; and if she'd have to do as much justifying and hedging as Dan does here: 'I heard Oppenheimer was poised to be the second biggest hit of the Summer, so I felt that, as a movie critic, it was my duty to go watch it...' and 'you'd be surprised it is more than a science biopic, and it deals with the grey areas in our lives, and the lies we tell ourselves to justify that we're not in a bad situation'... Something to think about.

@lolalirola6228 I don't think the two situations are quite the same. My point in the review was to say that often films like this are perceived as only meant for women. I don't think there was an idea that either of the two films you mentioned were perceived as only for men. Also, I didn't say that I went to see it as 'my duty.' I said I went to see it because as a film fan and critic, I want to open myself to all kinds of movies, not just ones that others may 'expect' me to see or like. And I did say similar things about Oppenheimer - it was more than a science biopic and it did have a lot to say about human nature.
I have nothing against your review, in fact I agree with most of it!
But I do have issue that it makes you (or any man) "open minded" to go see a woman-led film and a Taylor Swift documentary, like the commenter said. And I don't think I have ever read multiple people praising a female critic in her comment section for going to see male-centric movies at all, is my point.
My other point, re Oppenheimer is more nuanced: like you, I don't think they are movies just for men, and I agree they are not perceived as such (nor should they). But then, this one and Taylor's (and Barbie) shouldn't be regarded as "chick flicks", should they? Yet they are. I think we need a conversation as to why. Why are movies about men just "movies", but movies about women are "women's movies". If movies about men's plights are for/about humanity, so are movies about women's problems. If not, then Oppenheimer and war movies would need to be be classified as "boy movies".
Lastly, I know you didn't use the word "duty", but I did find it odd that going to see this movie merited so much explanation ('I don't want to only see movies about things that interest me, I was curious about this one because it's poised to be a big hit...). That's all.

Not everybody. Unfortunately many jump on "hate band wagons", very sad...people should try to be unbiased until they read her books and then opine. I personally enjoyed most of them.👍🏼📚

The adaptation already fixed the most ridiculous plot hole of the book; the fact that they were all in their early 20s, aging them up with the right choice - however CH is problematic, and she tends to glorify abuse, in a lot of her novels, so I'm happy the adaptation seems to have steered clear of falling into that classic CH trap.
Well, him having that job as a 20 something is nonsense but her being more naive at 20s would make more sense.

@@ryanrobertson9744you can’t tell someone when they can or cannot be triggered. A trigger is not a choice, it’s an uncontrollable response. It’s the brains response to stimuli that is similar to the trauma that the brain has suffered. It’s like someone with an injury feeling a flare up while playing a sport. It is something for the individual person to maintain and attempt to control on their own, you telling them when to be triggered or not is illogical, unhelpful and pointless.

I understand this film not being appealing for a survivor. I just saw it today. I'm not a survivor but was SO glad that you never actually see the physical violence in this film - it's only implied. Regardless, not a good film for survivors to see but so glad the violence wasn't shown.
My girlfriend and I saw Deadpool & Wolverine on Friday and this on Saturday. Neither of us knew w much about it when we went in, other than the fact that my GF is in love with Blake Lively… also, the trailers were pretty vague, which I think is to the movie’s benefit.
Just learning now that the director also plays Ryle, which in hindsight makes sense. I told my GF last night that I appreciated the fact that that character wasn’t completely vilified. He wasn’t portrayed as a complete monster. The movie and its characters don’t shy away from the fact that what he hides and his actions are TERRIBLE, but it is done in a way that makes him more than just a caricature (think Sleeping with the Enemy, 1991). Perhaps this is why the director chose to play the part himself. He wanted Ryle to be a real character with a dark history, and a dark secret.
This film was really refreshing. There is a point in the 3rd act where a main character LITERALLY says the title of the movie… and I don’t groan, or eye roll. It made total sense. It is a story about finding your own strength and the power of breaking generational trauma. Overall I would give it a solid 4/5.
The book author asked him to play the character after he had bought the rights and decided to direct but before casting.
The book is basically bottom of the barrel writing so the bar for the screenplay to improve was on the floor. Wish the movie didn't fall into the same marketing trap as the book where the abuse is at least hinted at so people will not get blindsided - many survivors of domestic violence have begrudged the original book for existing in the Romance section of stores and being promoted as such with no clue as to the graphic contents.
One of the most practical books I read about Domestic violence is Breaking free from an abusive relationship, your journey to freedom by Natalie Adams.
I'm a high school teacher and girls are pretty into Hoover books as far as I can tell, so definitely a possible sleeper hit.
As an educator asking them their opinions could help them talk about tough topics. But check with your principal first so their parents don’t go crazy.,

Why just 58% though? It was pretty good to me. In contrast, Thor Love & Thunder got 63% on RT.
But in the end, critic scores do not matter, cause if you enjoyed it, then it's worth it!

work. It's not all critics agree to give it a 58% score. It's 58% of the critics giving a given movie a positive review.
58% at RT is basically 3/5. 61% is fresh.
This was a great movie that covers the complexity of humans, and how experiences from childhood can affect us and alter the course of our lives. It also illustrates the mixed emotions involved in being in a domestic relationship. It's not as easy to just leave someone that you've formed an attachment and love for. It takes time and a lot of strength.
Great review. I'm a non-book reader who just saw this and the unreliable narrator "twist" really had me. An impressive and lovely film. The baby holding scene really brought it all together.

My take on it was pretty much the same as yours. I've seen some hate online for it, and there's some controversy about the rest of the cast having some issues with Justin Baldoni, so I was glad to see the movie still felt powerful to me.
In reality you keep it all to yourself when you are in this type of relationship. Keep your mouth shut, keep plans close to your chest and reveal nothing....especially when you are planning to leave. This is the most dangerous and crucial time. The time just before you leave, or in some cases....run. when you have a child both your safety is at stake so p,lease don't talk and try to reason. I read this book and I was appalled at how Lily laid out her intentions to leave Ryle to him. Many women don't make it past this stage.

Airplane was a HILARIOUS & delightful movie. I don’t recall one of the pilots being called Pilot Flyer. I do remember Kareem Abdul Jabar being wonderful in his cameo. I wish we had more movies like Airplane these days.
This is probably Colleen Hoover’s best book and maybe the one with the best message. In a way it’s completely different from Hoover’s other works, so it’s exciting to see it’s the one that’s been adapted.
Verity is getting a movie
What you said reminded me of when I saw Gone Girl going to a movie that was a book adaptation where I don't think that I was the main demographic but just enjoyed it as a story without knowing it anything so it was a blank slate
I've read a few of CH's books and I don't like her writing. I don't think the issue with this one is that she romanticized abuse. Reality is that, if abusers didn't have redeeming qualities (or at least, if they weren't good at brainwashing us into believing they do), it would be so much easier to leave them. I just think CH is not good at writing deep and complex characters. She wants to tackle heavy topics but her execution is not there. I wasnt planning on watching the movie but Ill give it a try now.
I just came out front the theater so My recent review are as follows.
1- I love how soft the abuse parts are because for people that actually has been there. Some things are hard to watch.
2- the development of the story is well written.
3-every one is executed beautifully

The disconnect between young lily and older lily is hilarious… Like they were playing their interpretation of completely different characters. And i get people change over time but it was just so different. In an interview the actress that plays young lily says she talked with Blake 2 times before filming, and it shows…

Has to be a ballsy move to cast yourself as the abuser in your film. Plus there seems to be some trouble going on with the PR for the film as well between the director and cast
Can you expand on that? I haven't seen any of the junkets/interviews. Has there been tension between the director and cast?
@@waywardmind Apparently all of the cast has unfollowed him on social media. None of them were seen with him on the red carpet. They've been avoiding questions about working with him. Anything he's posted has been by himself or just tagging studio/movie accounts
@@iwilder94 there's a rumour that Blake and Ryan steam rolled him and have tried to take control of the movie - esp with Blake using a movie about DM to promote her hair care line and how some of the press junket has been criticised as being too light-hearted (re the Ryan R skit). It seems like the director wants to distance himself from all of that, considering he said it was very difficult to film the abusive scenes, and he often was very emotional afterwards, he probably doesn't want the light heartness of Blake and Ryan to be pinned on him too.

From what those familiar with the author are saying I wonder if this is similar to what the 50 Shades movies could have been if the screenwriter and director had been free to fix the book's romantization of toxic relationships.

I really liked the movie. I cried. I read the book way back when it first came out in 2016 so couldn’t actually remember much of the details. I do think it’s a well-acted, well-told adaptation

I don't understand the criticism of Colleen romanticizing dv. I liked the book. I thought it showed clearly the dynamic in an abusive relationship without dragging it out and being too long. Haven’t seen the movie. I find movies like these too triggering. I like my nights without nightmares. I’m glad that Lively got some good reviews for once. She is not a stellar actress imo.
Just watched the movie today, and I found it's not doing justice to the topic of DV, they wanted to portray. I would completely take away the storyline with Atlas (Lily's first love), because honestly it seems too unrealistic (him waiting for her all his life) and it also eats away too much of the screen time, which to my opinion could be better used to go deeper into the psychological part of heroin's struggle.
Honestly for me the movie was too superficial and almost too much leaning into rom-com genre, instead of serious movie.

I took my wife for date night. It wasn’t as hokey as other date night films and the core of the film was relevant. I felt the pacing was slow midway. The actress who played young lily was perfectly cast. But to contrast was how poorly Atlas’s teen actor was miscast. They seemed like 2 completely different people.
I see that Kevin Mckidd is also in this. I think he's a super underrated actor

I saw the movie yesterday. I would describe it as Sweet Home Alabama meets The Devil Wears Prada with a splash of Sleeping With the Enemy. And yes.. the 3 don’t blend well!
I received the book for my birthday on August 1st. I'm still reading a few books I also received for my birthday, The Housemaid by Frida McFadden, as soon as I'm done with the series I'm going to read, It Ends with Us, I can't wait to read it. Thanks to my daughters, they gifted me a box of Gel nail polishes and books on my wishlist. Thanks for the insights of the movie 🍿🎥. I look forward to watching it after I read the book.
Justin baldingi was amazing in the film..i could not keep my eyes off him and it wasn't just his good looks..Blake was amazing but he deserves just as much credit if not more for his performance...Atlas was badly cast I thought...
I liked how it worked to make the abuser a damaged human and not just a monster.
I’m not a fan of romance novels (fine with it as a subplot, but not the whole plot), so only learnt about CoHo fairly recently, through BookTube. It sounds like this one has an honest, worthwhile storyline, unlike others I’ve seen reviewed. She’s known for highly romanticising really problematic stuff, and I think (from what I’ve seen) that this might be the only time she has a protagonist actually leave and not go back into the abusive relationship, with that return painted as a happily ever after.
Ick. I think I need to reread Christina Henry’s latest, ‘Good Girls Don’t Die’ as a brain cleanser from having even thought about CoHo’s books.
(I’ve heard that she’s an absolutely lovely person. I don’t hate her books, just don’t like red flags having a green filter put on them. Know too many people (not just women) who have thought that way and paid a terrible price for it.)
This movie was awesome! It was one of the best movies I have seen this year and I am a guy. My Dad also loved the movie. I know it will not get oscars attention but both the movie and Blake Lively should get some awards credit. It will end up being better than some of the Oscar movies later on.

Bi-Polar, PSD, Borderline, one twitch (Perhaps they'll leave us alone?) , and we could become the villain. First thing we have to do is fix ourselves. As Dan said, this one is close to the mark. I could easily forgive the book version younger characters, but as full adults they know what they are doing. It's hard to forgive that.

What I disliked about the movie from a male perspective (not having read the book) is the fact that she takes no accountability.
1.) She lied about her ex owning Root. The first visit to Root, she should have told her husband about him and introduced them.
2.) The second time at Root she lied again and went to the restroom hoping to see him. They were caught inside the restroom together.
3.) She lied about the tattoo meaning. Most man does not want to be married to a lady with a tattoo that symbolizing another man.
4.) She chased her husband when he asked for space because he was upset. She then walked in front of the edge of stairs and he pushed her down the stairs (he was wrong), but it appeared to be a reaction.
5. ) Lily told her husband that she may still love another man.
6.) When she had an issue with her husband she then ran to her ex liver.
**The abuse was not warranted, but unless I missed something. I feel as if she purposely ruined her marriage. **
Women Dont take accountability. They never have, they try to gaslight and manipulate their way out of it.

The movie was about Domestic Abuse, but it also felt like an emotional affair / love movie that Lily could and should have prevented. Why take the raging bull into a china shop?!

In the book, Lily gives their daughter a middle name that is related to Atlas… without Ryle’s consent, which Ryle recalls the name association from Lily’s journal!!! Obviously this will piss him or anyone off! How messed up is that?! 🤦🏻♂️ why Lily?! 🤦🏻♂️

I HATED the book. Hoover is horrible about taking things like abuse and sexual assault and romanticizing them because the man is hot, and her heroines tend to be shallow, imho. Since my mother loves Hoover, I've read a few of her books in an attempt to figure out why she is so popular. I gave up after about 5 books where I wanted to reach through the pages and strangle any of the characters in the book.
That said, I will be seeing this movie over the weekend. I love my mother, and she wants to see it, so I'm taking her. I hope the script and direction fix the issues that make Hoover an infuriating writer. And if it is as good as you say, I hope it is a big box office success.

MANY readers feel the book romanticized abuse. This is a frequent response. I think the most important thing is for you to find out why these books are so compelling to your mom. Ask her to really think about it.

I want to see a movie last night so I looked at the theater to see what was playing and I saw that this was playing, never heard of it before, so I watched the trailer and I decided to watch it, I loved it. I thought it was really good.

I've never read the book but I was uncomfortable with the trailer because it has all the flags of a domestic abuse story. Since this is romance, i dont' wish the ending to be she decides to stay with her abusive husband because "love conquers all".
This movie is not being portrayed or advertised as a romance. The book definitely leans a lot more that way and focuses heavily on their love story; however, the darkness of DV is definitely ever-present in it. I haven't seen the movie yet, but every single trailer I've seen definitely indicates that it is not a romance or rom-com. It Ends With Us is the first book, the second one is It Begins With Us. I enjoyed both books for what they were. They aren't high-quality literary masterpieces, but I was in the mood for quicker reads that still had feelings and emotions to them. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.
I'm like Dan, I really didn't know about the book. I'd seen the cover in book stores a lot and got the vibe it was a really popular book aimed at women. I tried to get the gist of what the story was going to be about and decided to go see it. But with that background i had my guard up for the director's character, the early courting seemed aggressive, practically demanding things with some mildly effective charm to smooth the edge but that was a red flag to me. Then as it went along and they started to be together for longer and I was thinking "wait, is he actually not that bad?". I think you are supposed to sympathize at least a little but then he takes things way too far and it made it all messy in a good way. No one is pure evil but actions have consequences and it was interesting to see it all play out. Blake Lively is excellent in the movie and she proves that she is a capable individual worthy of love if she wants it and can demand better from her partner which was nice to see. I'm a bit sad the flower shop doesn't get a ton of attention, it's her baby and you really only get snippets of it. Jenny Slate is also great and I wish there was more from her too. Overall i found the story engaging and i could definitely hear the sniffles in the audience even if there were only 20ish people there for the more harrowing and somber moments. I got a little misty, lump in the throat feeling, no tears this time however. I definitely felt what the movie wanted me to feel though.
That said, I also wouldn't have minded the happy rom-com blake lively/jenny slate run a flower shop version with the other guy, Atlas at the center, which is maybe the sequel?
As a victim of domestic abuse in the past, this movie really hits as does the book but more so. The emotions and feelings I had during this film were unmatched to any other

The book of maps is named after the Greek god (technically, Titan) who has to hold up the skies. If you've seen a statue of a dude with a big heavy sphere on his back, that's him (I mean, probably, I don't know what statues you're looking at)

It’s just an author coding her characters: Atlas is strong and supportive, Ryle is angry (riled up) and Lily Bloom will be pretty and experience character growth. It’s no different than a detective named Spade or an action hero named Blade.

From what I've read of her, Colleen Hoover just really pumps out books fast. They almost certainly don't get edited enough, or even seen by another Pair of eyes before they're published. This movie being more focused and a better character story could easily be the result of basically being a second Draft.

Blake Lively will make any movie interesting. She has a combination of dramatic talent and comedic sense. She gives a depth to her wacky characters. I am not sure about Lady Deadpool, but if the characters are realistic, she will probably be good in the movie. I wasn't sure if I should go see this. It might be depressing or tiring. I think it is cool to examine the feelings involved in escaping an abuser though. That makes for an interesting psychological drama/thriller.

I was surprised that the Atlas character fell flat for me. I found him hard to understand when he speaks.. it sounded like he was hiding an accent or something. Just not very clear. And their connection wasn’t fully developed for me.

Her books are popular but you either love or hate her. Lol. I like Blake but I hope this movie bombs. Ugh. I know there's plenty of movies shows that normalize romanticize toxic relationships but ALL of her books are like that and problematic. And just not well written and with stupid names. and it's annoying that Hollywood is only interested in adapting trashy books like these because it's popular.
Never read the book but I enjoyed the movie. Gonna probably pick up the second one to get to know atlas. Enjoyed the video!
Justin Baldoni bought the rights & signed on to direct. Colleen Hoover the book author ASKED Justin Baldoni to play the male lead. It was HER idea. Then Blake Lively was hired & became a producer. Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds turned against Justin Baldoni & according to some reports tried to take over during post production. Due to Ryan Reynolds money & influence in Hollywood the cast AND the book author stopped speaking to Baldoni. The crew is siding with him. And now the PR disaster is overshadowing the film but making it successful.
Interestingly, YOUR interpretation corresponds to what Justin Baldoni says his intentions were in terms of deepening understandings of DV.
Blake Lively is promoting in a way that minimizes DV which is upsetting some survivors. I’m not a survivor but find her insensitive.
The fact that you even have to say "as a movie critic I don't want to just see the films I'm interested in" is a little concerning. That should just be a given and not even something you even have to think about.

My girlfriend told me let's watch It. I said yes. We haven't read the books. The movie was good I really enjoyed it. But the dude ain't no player. He asked her to have sex after meeting her after 5 minutes. Then later in the movie he begs her for a kiss that was very lame. The dude was weak with no game. Then his sister said if you get back with him I'll stop being your best friend. What kind of sister is that. The dude wasn't even that bad lol
