This particular exercise is very tiring for the children, so try to keep it short and as light as possible. You'll see in the video how Ellen gradually gets tired which leads to less productivity.
    Hope you enjoy it!

@@Binehier Your sensitivity is remarkable. But we should not forget that keeping everything unpleasant and minor disappointments away from children is nonsensical. It does not correspond to reality. If you approach the child gently, with charm and understanding, as Hovak does here, things can't go any better. He recognizes that his daughter, whom he knows better than we do here, is overwhelmed for the moment and sets limits. That is right and good. He explains it to her and does it with charm and kindness. If more parents would do that, our world would be a better place. And, who knows children, knows that it is not a catastrophe for them. 5 minutes later they are already busy with their own affairs. All the best to you.

What I like A LOT in this video that it is so authentic. Ellen (who has already a reputation built with amazing and great bass videos) shows to the world that music is a learned behaviour, and the learning goes along with mistakes. Those mistakes are usually hidden for the audience, which makes music for many people like magic. I love this. I have to show this to my pupils as well: look it is 100% normal to make mistakes, even when you are as cool and great as Ellen on her bass. Simple as that. I want to make a deep bow for both Dad and Daughter. Very cool process here. Greetings from The Netherlands.

It's so much going on in the mind and the rhythm and a lot of people just don't understand how hard it really is. Ellen has it in her and she'll learn how to put it all together. It just takes time, patients and persistence and of course DAD being a AWESOME Dad and taking the time and patience to work with her. Keep up the good work 👍🎸🕺

I try to use that approach with my students, be patient and let them figure out, and once they realize where they failed, it's very unlikely they make the same mistake.

Being a Steve Vai fan,I just watched the video "I met STEVE VAI" and never heard of Ellen before. So, I clicked on this video to watch her play and I am so impressed. Her 'improvisations' on the 1 and 5 counts (starting 13:45), then later the 1-5-8, etc. just blows me away. You can see the concentration and the enjoyment in her face as she's learning and playing. I will most definitely watch more... Every once in a while, when I hear a young child play an instrument or sing on levels that go beyond comprehension, It makes me tear up sometimes. I have to give praise to the parents here too. It takes a lot of time and patience to learn an instrument, let alone teach it. It's the overall love and enjoyment that makes it easy. May God keep blessing you. Rock On, Ellen!!!!

Ok, I’m 71, been playing Bass since I was 13. I always learned on the fly in a room full of impatient musicians. I have never given any conscious thought setting up a groove. I’ve always just organically came up with cool stuff. BUT, this video is extremely cool. I’ve always
Been able to find a good note for a minor chord but never intellectually knew why. In short, I learned a lot from this.
Also, very cool that the dad knew that the girl had the knowledge and resisted grabbing the bass and demonstrating.
I just subscribed. It was inspiring that they used a rhythm machine. That alone makes it more enjoyable to practice.

I've been trying to learn bass again for a few months. I taught myself guitar over 50 years ago, had many teachers, and my brother told me some theoretical things that were better than anything any teacher or the university taught me. A lot of different people and techniques were used. I'm a singer, R&B, soul/funk with blues roots, so I knew what I needed. One of my teachers was a famous blues guitarist (also one of my best teachers, but he died right after he offered me free lessons for life).
My point is that you are both amazing! How I wish I could have had the influence of the dad growing up. You are an amazing teacher! You can't teach soul, but improv is important to learn first, before reading, IMO. I had a good ear, but when I was finally old enough to take piano lessons, the good, local teacher retired, and the available teacher was terrible. A teacher makes or breaks you! Absolutely! I hope you are creating more and more creators. Your talent is so rare and dynamic! God bless you 🙌.
BTW, I'm in awe of Ellen. She is already a teacher for me and professional standard. Such a beautiful, happy, intelligent, and humble too, young lady. You are truly blessed to have her.

First off! Watching the 2 of you and the interaction positive reinforcement not only as father and daughter! But musician to musician and the intensity of her drive to learn and absorb anything and everything you are giving her, allowing her to do so and the willingness to change direction to give her the advantage of making mistakes and learning from them. Once she's got it then stepping in for her to hear the end results of the lesson and playing along at her speed and upping the game by random note to use when she wants! I'd say by the time she's in high school, come prom time (If the kids have them) She'll be too busy playing with a band for the dance! Hat's off dad, Keep it up young lady!!

My finger went the wrong way -- lol
I must comment Dad for being a patient teacher especially when several times Ellen just wants to have fun instead of follow through the lesson. Someday, she will cheerish these moments when she looks back and hopefully she can teach her kids in the same way you've been patiently crafting her talent into greatness.
    Welldone sir! Welldone Ellen

Hey ellen, you did a greaz job. But there is one thing I spotted, which might really help you, when you watch the video again. Watch it, and pay attantion on the movement of your legs. At times, they are moving totally on-point to the beat, thats the part you really march throug it. But sometimes your legs are swinging restlessly, which is totally normal, but steals your focus/concentration.
You are awesome and doing great. It's just a small hint to help :) You are a real angel, enlighting my day with your smiles.

That's the first time my attention was held watching and listening to a video recording lesson. I don't blame Ellen for taking off to follow the rhythm of the drums. That's where the fun is. Chords are an important part of the roadmap but the rhythm is the journey ✌️

Excellent lesson Hovak. You are an excellent teacher and you have such an amazing knowledge of music, plus you have an excellent way of teaching. Ellen, it is always a pleasure to see you and to watch you learn and to listen to your music. It amazes me how much you have learned and your knowledge of music at this young age. You are a joy to watch and your music is a pleasure to listen to. Keep up the good work! I look forward to future videos. And thanks for helping me to learn also!

Great, fabulous teacher, anyone watching this who wants to learn how to play bass will benefit. She is so cute, she plays amazing by ear, she has the chops, but she needs to learn theory and the basics! She’s so bored playing whole notes, swinging her legs! I can totally relate, but you have to think about the music as a whole and what your contribution is if you’re going to be a session player. I love that bass! (Female bass player here, I have small hands so I play a 30” too, although I do have a full scale Stingray-in purple!)

Ellen, you are a gem, and an excellent student, who can learn and play anything you hear. A true natural. You're both lucky to have each other, both musically and emotionally.
