Horvac is a world-class teacher. Not every musician who can play brilliantly can teach, and not every teacher can teach well. This incredibly darling young lady appears to enjoy learning the art of music more than anything except cake! The enjoyment between the two of them is something she will cherish throughout her life, and it is something that could never be purchased. The fact that her loving father is the conduit of this knowledge will resonate in her being when she's my advanced age. Every day I carry the countless things my parents taught me, and that memory keeps them alive long after they left. Thank you, Horvac, for the gift you give us by allowing us to share in this education that you are giving your delightful daughter. My best to you both!

Nice work Ellen and Hovac! I'm a teacher though I now want to get some lessons again!
As you know ear training, understanding intervals and theory in general is vital to being a pro musician. In some gigs you just have to show up and play, you should consider yourself lucky if you get any sheet music. The only way to do it though, is to do it, make a few errors and learn fast!
One caveat - please make sure you invest in the best quality ear defenders available. Look after your hearing!

As a bassist for over 40 years, I would recommend that when practicing scales, that you make it a little tougher. Play the scale all the way up the neck, and then back down. You willl discover different ways to go up and down the neck, and this practice will unlock the full neck to you. I love your joy at playing, your dedication to the instrument, and your father's dedication to helping you! YOU ROCK ELLEN!

This is SO cool to see. And it shows you CAN teach music theory without reading. But you are teaching her how I ended up learning on my own. So you taught her the major scale in the proper position, then each note and how it sounds compared to the root. I always tell people "The song (or whatever you are playing) is the house. The key is the address." The "house" will always be put together the same way. The "address" is just where it's located. And if she plays and associates each scale degree with its relative position, she'll be able to change keys without even thinking. Of course, teaching her intervals is a sure fire way for her to just hear what's being played. So once she finds her key, she can just associate what she hears with where the notes are instead of trying to think about sharps and flats. I know in the end, she'll just "get it" and be able to put everything together. You're teaching her the building blocks (the HOW) instead of just memorization. That's seriously cool.

My daughter learned to play the piano but her teacher never covered theory. She knows how to play MAJ Min Dim and 7ths but can only do it when she reads music.
I learned like Ellen. I can’t read music but I can follow any song and hear the intervals. I play bass, guitar, mandolin and ukulele. Learning theory opened up a whole new world for me. And it’s fun.

Playing scales seems boring but this exercise will train your ear and your hands so that one day you will be able to think the notes in your head and your hands will play them. That is when you will be one with your bass. It will just be an extension of your mind. Like a pencil is used to write without thinking about the letters or words. There is ALOT to be learned with scales. This is excellent teaching. Do Rae Me Fa So La Ti Do. I love that giggle, it reminds me of when my grand daughter was her age.

Musician myself I understand how Ellen realy "feels" the colour and hight of the tones ... but that knowledge and understanding came to me after a musical life of more than sixty years ... I pray she can make a living out of her musical skills ! She doesn 't just "play" music; she "IS" music herself from head to toe ... Beside that she has the luck with her father as "musical mate and teacher" ! We will hear and enjoy a lot of Ellen in future, I'm sure !
