- Hammocks are a great way to relax in the summer but they can also be extremely dangerous if not used properly. Kendra Muller was relaxing in a hammock attached to two brick pillars used to hold up a deck. The brick column collapsed on top of Muller. The accident left her a quadriplegic. She had to learn how to eat, speak and breathe all over again. Expert Derek Hansen, who sleeps in a hammock every night and runs the website The Ultimate Hang, provided some of his top tips to Inside Edition. #InsideEdition
Here's a little advice, when putting up a hammock, don't attach it to dead rotten wood.

thats actually not correct. quadriplegic means that the paralysis effects all four limbs. Many quadriplegics have some arm movement but for instance might lack hand function

A girl from my school died when a brick pillar suporting her hammock fell on her. It's horrible that most hammock accidents could be prevented. She was a nice girl and she didn't deserve any of this. I hope she rests in peace.

I slipped on ice once and hit my head straight on the sidewalk. Was a bit woozy, but was perfectly fine. In other words, she probably had a thick skull.

Moral of the Story: Test the strength of the structures you're tying to. Give them a solid kick or a solid pull. Use live trees. If you use metal hooks or straps verify how much weight they can hold. Keep the hammock low and don't jump on it. I kind of jumped on one the other day and my weaker metal hook snapped. I landed on a bunch of rocks 🪨
To be fair she was using brick pillars that held up a deck, I think most people would think that could support their weight
Obviously once you starting thinking about the weight distribution it makes sense how it collapsed, but this wasn't an absolutely moronic mistake like people using dead trees

Be careful with metal hammock stands too, and make sure they’re sturdy and assembled properly. I know someone whose teeth got knocked out and suffered a broken nose and facial bone fractures when the stand collapsed in on itself as he was on the hammock.

At school we had a hammock but the kids went crazy with it and where swinging it into 360s and everything ,we had lots of sturdy trees at school so it was fine but on day a girl went on and she hated swinging on it like crazy so the kids pranked her and the hammock ripped while she was in the air and when she fell you heard a thud and a crack and she got taken to hospital turns out she fractured her skull.

I've always been terrified of hammocks! Because I always thought that if the hammock broke (or the supports holding it), your tail bone could hit the ground so hard. So any time I've seen someone using one I have a really good look around to try to make sure it's super sturdy, and won't lie in one myself. I'm anxious about most things though lol.

that happened to me when i was on a scouting trip in northern utah. i was sitting in my hammock with my friend eating lunch when we suddenly dropped to the ground. we were really confused about what just happened and when i looked at the two trees connecting the hammock, i saw that one of the trees had come out of the roots and was nearly about to fall down. luckily it was really tall and was leaning against some other trees. we didn’t get hurt except for the falling but i wish i would’ve checked more carefully because that was a dead tree.
