I just think its weird playing someone who has donkey Kong, when I have donkey Kong. It’s gonna make the game feel repetitive before we know it. Idk just my 2 cents

The lack of sidekicks was the deal breaker for the new Strikers for me, I'm glad the series was finally remembered again, but I feel like alot seems to have been lost since the Wii game.
Thank you for showing so much Daisy gameplay. It should be a crime to not include her in Mario Sports games. It's the only time she gets to shine. Makes me very sad she was left out of Battle League

I think the points about the personalities shown here impacting how we view these characters and the amount of content not necessarily equalling longevity are really interesting to think about. I will never not see Daisy as ultra loud and competitive and I do think a lot of it is from how she's portrayed especially in the Wii game.

Fun Fact: Strikers Charged was released on the same day one of my cousins was born. I actually couldn’t pick up my pre-order because my family were in the hospital with my aunt & uncle’s family.

Oh man, if there was a way to count hours played on Gamecube, my time with the OG Strikers would be in the tens of thousands. I've played it soo much over the years. I still break it out from time to time when I have friends over.
I absolutely love both Strikers games, especially how it highlighted the non-main Mario characters. It's unfortunate how the new game sidelines the side characters, but I hope atleast some of them get added at a later date. Nice to see the games being covered in here!
This game will always be one of my favorites for how balls to the walls and experimental it was in terms of characterization. I still wish Battle League was just as angsty and agro as this game, but Charged will always have a special place in my heart. Also, Daisy stans rise!
Have to say, my brother and I were really big on Mario Strikers Charged Football (which is the O B J E C T I V E L Y superior version, with the more animations and side character supers). My brother, after seeing Battle League takes a sizeable departure from Charged (mostly the fact that you can no longer charge the ball with consecutive passes), no longer wants to buy it.

I loved strikers, I never played online but I had so much fun playing it. I thought that it was too “gritty” for Nintendo to do nowadays but I’m glad it’s coming back. Probably no Waluigi Crotch Chop though sadly
Haven't played the demo but here are my two hopes for Battle League:
1. Daisy must be playable
2. Wario must utilize flatulence in some way. I mean, his ability in Charged was farting on other players

Watching this video just helped me figure out what's bothering me about the new strikers. It looks too zoomed out if that makes sense. I kept having trouble keeping track of characters and I think that's the reason.
I definitely agree. I hope there are options to zoom in the camera in the final release of the game.

I'm very excited to play this on Switch. I stuck to tutorial mode during the demo....
The only thing I wished is in Battle League is an exciting Luigi theme because that was one of the most memorable thing in Charged for me.
Happy Luigi is still amazing tho.

One thing I like about Battle League Football over the first two, is that you can make your team with all the different Super Mario characters. That's awesome!

Mario strickers was my favorite GameCube game and I remember loving playing it, i also really liked Charged, and the main reason i loved the local co-op with my brother

I didn't play Super Mario Strikers on GameCube since I missed it but I did play Mario strikers charged and man it was fantastic I really love the tournament style and the difficulty spikes up on each cup even though I played it on normal and still got my ass whooped lol. But man 15 years later it still holds up to this day and I had a LOT of fun with this game!
at the endo of the day battle league really did come back to its roots... for the most part
Strikers charged as both created and destroyed friendships. Truly one of the GOATs. I'll always remember screaming at my cousins while playing this game, for good and bad. Wish I still had a copy.

I agree about what you said about core gameplay. As much as they are criticised, I always go back to Aces and Super Rush from time to time because.... they're FUN!!
I'll always have the first Mario Strikers in my heart, because two reasons, it's my favorite game of all time in 26 years of playing videogames (i'm almost 30). Two, i'll never forget the day i got the game, it was '05 Christmas (by then, i was 13yo), the game launched like 2-3 weeks earlier, and i got it as a present, literally spent all night until sunrise playing it with some of my cousins. I was amazed on how intense the game was. The third unnamed reason why Mario Strikers is my favorite game ever, it's simple, i've always loved football since i was like 4-5 year old, and heck, if there may be something that can top videogames and anime as my favorite hobbies, that's football, i can leave everything behind, just to watch a match or more on TV.
NGL, my hype went really up and then really down with Battle League, but, after the recent previews and gameplay videos, i'm more hyped than ever, to get it ASAP.
Honestly i didn't and don't even care about the amount of characters. It's the gameplay, the attitude of the game, the non-stop action, how this new game looks and feels more like the first game, my love for football, and even the soundtrack, that hooked me to Battle League

The only sports that really matters for gimmicks for different arenas to me are baseball and golf. I prefer the simple arenas opposed to the wild gimmicks that some give.

Played the demo of the new game last night, if only to get my Platinum Coins. Didn't really care for it. Had a hard time keeping track of my character, so whenever I DID get the ball I would try and pass it to the guy I got teamed up with since he seem to know what he was doing. We surprisingly won 2-1 despite me being the weak link on the team.
Would love for you to talk with Jon at Spawnwave about your perspective on this subseries and specifically the new entry. He was pretty harsh on the new game.
EDIT: If you couldn't tell from my Profile Pic, I agree with you on Strikers bringing much-needed personality and style to the Mario characters.
I've been playing both of them to prepare for Battle League, and while I prefer the OG, Charged is also amazing. And now that I've played the Battle League demo as well, I can confidently say that this series never fails me, so much fun every time.
Not really geling with toned down art style nor the fact that it is yet another game being released light on content with free updates to finish the game later...

I'm sorry to say this, but...I kinda like it when Mario is a simple, happy-go-lucky wahoo man. Now, let me clarify that I don't object to creativity in any form; rather, I'm more of a fellow who enjoys all the eras of Super Mario.
The two Mario Strikers games are fan favorites for a reason. Although I've never played Charged, its way of stylizing the Mario gang is great. Everyone oozes personality. The original Super Mario Strikers likewise was a good step up from the general Mario aesthetic with its hand-drawn artwork and having the cast dress up for the occasion.
These days, I noticed many older (and newer) fans developing a bit of a hive minded thought that Mario is getting too safe for his own good. Even though the Switch has given Mario some style here and there, the spin-off games are put under noticeable scrutiny by passionate fans of the GameCube and Wii.
Anyway...I feel like Battle League will be a good time. I can't buy it on release, but am looking forward to getting it at some point.

I loved the original Strikers on Gamecube, but Battle League looks underwhelming. The attitude has been toned down and the gameplay looked slower in the trailers I've seen. I also prefer having one team captain with several sidekicks instead of what Battle League is doing.
I counted 5 bangers at the end: Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Strikers Charged, Super Paper Mario and Twilight Princess.
Your opinion is your opinion, and I completely understand if you don't like Battle League as much (I don't like it as much as charged either). But I can say with experience that the gameplay is not slow whatsoever. The game is still chaos and speeding it up any more would make it nearly unplayable. Definitely as fast paced as the originals. Only comparing this one aspect though.

Mario strikers charged football was my first of these two and comparing these i really prefer the wii game more, its that edge and crazyness cranked up much much further which imo works better for this type of mario game
best part of the whole thing is when Bowser pops out and says "it's Bowsin' time!" then proceeds to Bows all over everyone

Yeah, the "good gameplay over content" argument doesn't gel well with me... sort of.
While I am happy that people are still playing Mario Tennis Aces because of its solid game play... I have no business ever owing a copy because of how... even after 4 years, it still feels bland and un-Mario. The Tennis gameplay isn't a big enough sell to me.
Same thing with Mario Maker 2. The game play is solid, and people are making some great levels, I'm never going to experience that because I don't feel like playing a game that had its post launch support stop before it got started.
Sure, solid gameplay and active communities are a good enough reason to come back to a game, but it's not always the best reason in my eyes...
Mario smash football is a...really weird name compared to super mario strikers, and just adding football to the end of charged is just pointless 😂 if it was called mario soccer or something then that would make sense but there isn't really a point to adding football to the end of it

I prefer the first game to charged because I like the sport and the first game is more like a football/soccer game, second game has a lot more gimmicks and 6 goal strikes arent for me 2 should be max imo

Maybe I'm just not a huge Soccer fan, but I had this on the Wii back in the day and just really wasn't a huge fan. Gameplay seemed repetitive and a little too unfair at times. I just kept going back to Mario Kart Wii or brawl. I'd love to give it another try though, now that I am 15 years wiser.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm glad Battle league is going its own way instead of being strikers charged 2.2.
Strikers 2 is still my favorite game overall because of nostalgia bias and its oozing personality.
But the game is sooo broken, the captain's super shots were useless at higher level, the charged mechanic was fun on paper but made the game kinda campy, some abilities (disappearing/jumping over the goalkeeper etc..) negated the need to play football and were spammed online. The stage hazards quickly became more frustrating than anything. And even some captain traits were weird. I hated tryhard-Mario and whinny-Peach. While it was cool, I didn't get why Daisy would have ice abilities when she has more of a sun/fire design/character, God of thunder DK? Zen-Diddy?
Once again, I love Strikers 2 but I'm happy for it to be "that one edgy over-the-top game".
Technically, Daisy had crystal powers, not ice powers. If it were ice, her Crystal Smash move would be light blue and not orange and they wouldn't be coming from the ground. I wouldn't place Daisy as a sun/fire character when the fire aesthetic has been given to both Mario and Bowser. Also if she has to have an ability, it would have to be plant manipulation. I mean, look at Mario Power Tennis and the Mario Baseball series. I honestly like the whole try hard Mario and whiny Peach concept. It gave the characters more than what we're used to from them. I'm guessing you like the more controlled concept that Mario and Peach have in Battle League, right?

As for the concepts, In Strikers charged I like how they took each character's main traits and exagerated it 200%. Only for Mario and Peach do I feel their behaviour is opposite to how i'd picture them in general and not just exagerated, so yeah i prefer the battle League approach for those two specifically.

GameCube cheats less than Wii, that and super strike being a good chance at a 2 goal and mega strikes being a guaranteed 0 for you and 4 for the AI because cheating was better
One of my problems with Mario has always been that he is too "safe" too "family friendly" and that his design is just flat out boring. So Strikers taking all this boring blandness and turning up the edgy anime action was a welcome change for me.
The new one is gonna be bad. I want the story/tourney mode back. The newspaper things was so fun

Played both Strikers’ games as a kid. I enjoyed the gameplay but found (and still feel to this day) the aesthetic of the first two Strikers’ games really ugly. The 2D art has always been great and I don’t mind a bit of a harder edge in this spinoff series but the look of the games has always been so off putting. It’s always been the UI and environments. It has a very cold and industrial feel to them that I feel clashes with the cartoon character models. And the environments feel very generic. This is something I think the new game fixes and makes it immediately more appealing on a visual level to me.
I’m going to say it Battle league looks very underwhelming compared to strikers charged and even the original GameCube strikers

Jon you lost me when you said that people could relate more to Sonic than to Mario. WTF? Who would ever relate to Sonic and why? All characters in Sonic except Robotnik are shallow and empty. Do Sonic fans actually think Silver, Amy and these other Sonic rip-offs are cool?
