the fat ps3 problem has been heavily researched by some people like RipFelix and it unfortunately goes down to a defects in the manufacturing processes of CPUS and GPUs at the time. There is a layer of material between the silicon die and the pcb it sits on that protects the solder balls under it, and the material used for a lot of CPUs and GPUs at that time was too stiff and did not flex under thermal expansion, resulintin in the solder balls cracking and ruining the die beyond repair. Another issue is the NEC Tokin Capacitors near the CPU and GPU degrading over time due to general age and the high heat of these older PS3 models. A permanent solution is to pay for an EXTREMELY expensive ($500-$600) GPU transplant from a newer model with a more power efficient RSX to the older PS3 model to keep the backward compatibility, and a new capacitor array board developed by RipFelix that is much easier to maintain for a casual soldering hobbyist.
I’ve watched his videos on this too. For as much as the RROD was a big issue, and MS took a lot of heat for it, atleast they addressed it. I myself had my Elite fixed for free by them in 2010 and it still works today. Sony on the other hand, even after the flaw in their system became apparent, did nothing. My BC PS3 remains broken 😂
@@scpnoobers and how much is a BGA reball station? A good quality one and not a cheap one from China. It takes great skill and knowledge to do. You'd need to be shown by a professional first.
Damn, sorry to hear that. My Fat PS2 BC PS3 died on me back in 2014, got it fixed. And ever since early 2016, I've been using a Super Slim and keeping the fat model safe for emergencies....
They likely replaced the faulty GPU with a later, trouble-free one. As it turns out, all 90nm RSX GPUs are ticking timebombs. 65nm and 40nm ones are in the clear.
@@SomeAngryGuy1997 Can't Belive 4 dumbasses agree with your comment, Stop Spreading Miss Information, back in 2016 There was No Way of Changing The Rsx Model in Ps3 From 90nm model to 65nm or 40nm, only in some part of Indonesia there was supposedly an guy who secretally developed the first mods chips to make Ps3 accept other gpu models but it was one guy in Indonesia or some part of Asia and it was only there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of the PS1 games I've bought digitally on the PS3, I've been able to re-download for free on the PS5. Stuff like Syphon Filter, Jumping Flash Etc. As for playing PS2 over HDMI, You could buy yourself a PS2TV, which isn't exactly the cheapest option, but you can buy Component cables for the PS2, or an HDMI converter. The PS2 was capable of displaying up to 4K on some games! But, I still got my huge pile of PS3 review copies if you ever want to borrow them, I thought they were PS4 games, so never packed them away :P
I remember the initial launch of the PS3 had some notoriously defective batches. I had TWO of them die on me in less than a year...It actually pissed me off so much I switched to the Xbox 360, but even those had their red ring of death fiasco. Still, my 360 is alive and well today which I can't say for PS3. Also it's nice to see you upload again, I wish to see you upload more consistently, you always made great content. Your Hellboy review still makes me laugh to this day.
I'm looking to upload a lot more. But it is likely to be like this video with minimal editing due to time constraints! Thanks for your comment though :)
It's usually the other way around. My friend bought both his 360 and PS3 in 2006. That PS3 still works today whereas 360 had been replaced 4 times until Xbox One came along. Anyway, devices from this era seem to be pretty unreliable unfortunately + the whole capacitor plague thing was still going on
My first 360 was a Jasper Elite, bought in early 2010 right before the first slim came out. Still works like a champ, meanwhile I’ve had at least 2-3 A01s die and have problems on the PlayStation side! What really sucks is if you want that backwards compatibility you have to go through every effort to have the launch systems modded to combat excess heat, delidding the RSX and CELL chips and having CFW installed to bring the fan settings up to where they should’ve been from the factory. The ones I’ve had serviced I haven’t had fail unless they had bad Tokin caps, much easier fix than a BGA related issue with the chips!
Funny how you mention that as I didn't get the 360 or PS3 back in the day except the Nintendo Wii, and even to this day from the WIi used in 2007, it still works even after 15+ years since we got it for my older brother's birthday in August 2007.
Sorry to hear that, luckily I heard friends who jailbroke their phat PS3s and it allowed them to change the fan speed to prevent overheating and they been going strong for a couple years now 🙏
My 60 gb ps3 died last year, after 10+ years. I took the initiative to replace the faulty rsx with a 40nm rsx from a ps3 slim and now it’s back alive and running cooler and better than ever! I recommend this mod to anyone who’s ps3 craps the bed.
Shame, I never got the phat model but owned a Super Slim 500gb since 2013/14. Still works and also the controller battery is still fine, I've Hen enabled it to run games without discs and got the vertical stand. The temps average 46 to 51 degrees in normal conditions with 31% fan speed, haven't replaced the thermal paste yet. I built my own console out of slim office PC with a low profile gpu that could potentially emulate PS3 but I'm still happy to still use original hardware. Probably the last PlayStation I'll ever own because emulation software and roms are becoming more accessible. Crazy thing is really, I remember at 18 in 2006 having a conversation with a friend at the time about would I get the PS3 or XBOX 360 when they're released, I said "I'm not sure, XBOX 360, maybe". Here I am, at 36, in 2024, still gaming on a PS3 super slim, with no desire to upgrade.😂 What a transition. I was even more shocked when I found out few games still being released for PS2 as late as 2014.
The only way you can get a reliable backwards compatible PS3 model is if it had the frankenstein mod done to it. Basically the original 90nm GPU gets replaced with a smaller one from a slim console. There are repair shops that can do it but it's expensive at least 650 dollars at minimum. Some eBay sellers do sell the console's itself.
The fat PS3 models are known for overheating and getting the orange light of death. I've had several different PS3 systems and they've all failed due to data corruption, Hardrive failures and my recent one has a dead Cr battery. I brought all these systems from cex and they refused the 2 year warranty. Also Keep in mind when buying digital games on the ps3. When the Internal cr battery dies, you will lose access to digital games, DLC and updates. Along with the internet connection. Sony will never fix the cr battery issue on ps3. Even tho they patched it for PS4 And PS5.
I know my feeling I just emulate the ps3 games at this point my yellow light since 2016 my was a 80 gi second gen I jail break it too play ps2 games you don’t need a ps3 for ps2 just jail break it I did it too slim ps3 I just got
Just found this channel and as I was watching your video you seemed really familiar - The 14:03 mark answers why! I had the YLOD on my phat PS3 many years ago - I still remember prying my PS3 open to rescue my copy of WWE 13 that was stuck in the console.
I only owned 2 PS3 consoles in my entire life. The first console suffered from YLOD when I tried to disassemble it for the first time to clean out the dust and replace the thermal paste. I think what triggered YLOD was when I pulled the motherboard too roughly away from the thermal sinks at the bottom of my fat PS3 containing stiff thermal paste. Too much pressure like that might have impacted the stabilization of my CPU and GPU, thus triggering the YLOD. Nonetheless, I have a second fat PS3 now that cost me $50 upon purchase (didn't come with an internal storage drive, a controller, hdmi cable, or charging cable for the controller but that was ok because I already owned all these items from my old and broken PS3). Now, I make sure to replace the thermal paste at least once every 2-3 years. My old PS3's thermal paste has never been replaced in about a decade of gaming on it. I was a kid at the time and knew nothing about disassembling any console or computer and only cared about kicking ass on GTA 4 Online when I got home from school lmaoo
That happened to me too when I tried to clean my ps3. Seems like when I removed the heat sync the caked up old thermal paste was applying just enough pressure to keep it running, as soon as I reassembled the ps3 there was heavy artifacting.
Replacement parts for both PS2 and PS3 (ALL MODELS) are cheap almost given away for free ... and have free shipping from China especially if you live outside USA so not sure wtf people complain about and ask for backwards compability for PS4, 5, shatbox, craptendo and other nonsense when those consoles are made to fry even from a simple fart and most have zero ways to bee repaired, most shops wont even look at them let alone spend work hours to try repair something complicated as those ... PS2 and PS3 is simple to fix even at home.
I have a launch model I got in 2006 and it died, too. I still have the console but it's stuffed away in my closet. I got the second model, not the slim but the second model that is still the phat version, haha. I got it around 2008 and it still works to this day....now that I commented this, it's probably going to die now! Haha. The PS2 was always my favorite console, but the PS3 is surpassing that because of the amazing library. Resistance, inFamous, Little Big Planet, sequels to Killzone, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Sly. We also got gems like Heavenly Sword and the best series on the PS3, Uncharted.
One of the reasons why I do not have a PS3 fat model is for this reason. I would rather have a PS3 super slim that works flawlessly then to have the original with these issues. At least the slim models play PS1 games so that's a plus.
After years of keeping them in storage I finally binned 2 60GB BC PS3s. I was holding on to them for years hoping the community would find a real solution to the YLOD problem. Of course it was only years later that a solution was found :(
That's so awful, there's no real reason why these games should be forgotten, even given the... Hostile... Multi core architecture of the PS3 making emulation troublesome, I can't believe Sony is incapable of adding backwards compatibility to something with the power of a PS5... I keep mine around for MGS4, man that game will never age for me 🥰
I understand your pain I lost my first generation PlayStation 3 several years ago when I tried to play grand theft auto five on it, the game was so intense my PlayStation 3 suffered a total system failure. My condolences.
I was recently regretting selling my 60gb PS3 that was backwards compatible with all previous systems back in 2018 because I hadn't played it in over a year and felt like I probably never would. I was also about to move, which is something I've done a lot in my life and made me into a (somewhat) minimalist, keeping only what I use regularly and getting rid of stuff I didn't use for more than a year, which is still something I practice with little exceptions. I recently got a Steam Deck and got into emulation, so that scratches the itch to play any older games, but sometimes having the actual hardware is nice to play on. Based on your story, I can see that, unfortunately, physical hardware has a limited lifespan, and furthermore, emulation and game preservation is more important now more than ever. So, with that, I'm happy that my Steam Deck can emulate as well as it can, and I'm sorry to hear about your third PS3 dying. At least there are ways to continue these game's legacies, so long as we keep backups of the games and emulators.
I was sad when my backwards compatibility fat PS3 stopped working too I took it to a local repair spot and they couldn't fix it. I could get another one but it's just a matter of time before they all die. An Alternative, you can try as Emulation and Roms that play PS3 games or just get a PS2 Slim. I actually have a red PS3 Slim from Japan. But I hardly use it.
I still have my 60gb fat from launch. Even though it's been dead since 2010, i can't bring myself to get rid of it. Plans to do open heart surgery, but i know it's a minefield. Will pluck up the courage soon
I was heartbroken too when my fat PS3 died. I came to terms with the fact that as much as I loved the features of that system, it had inherent design flaws that cannot really be overcome. However my super slim PS3 solved pretty much all of those design flaws and is a very reliable system for the long term. Also while it is nice to have one device to play PS1-3 games, a super slim PS3 and a slim PS2 combined gives essentially the same functionality and actually takes up less volume than a fat PS3.
If I remember correctly all PS3 models can play PS1 titles, even the last Super Slim models with the sliding door for the disc, which I kinda want. Can't remember if there's many compatibility issues, there's a video from My Life In Gaming that talks about the backwards compatibility on PS3 but can't remember which, though I'm thinking it's a video on the PS1, I think it's also mentioned in a PS2 video they did regarding the backwards compatibility of the PS3 for the PS2 specifically.
The early PS3 consoles had full backwards compatibility with all PS1 and PS2 games, the later one released a year later was partial backwards compatibility. But after that PS2 became software emulated instead of Physical emulated with the Emote Engine and the other processor chip removed altogether.
All PS3s run PS1 games the same way, offering 99% compatibility and run all the officially digitally released PS1 and PSP games too. The 60GB PS3s had full PS2 hardware, CPU, RAM and GPU while the 80GB (60GB in Europe) only had the PS2 GPU, the Graphics Synthesizer which decreased PS2 compatibility from 99% to ~85%. All other PS3s are fully relying on software emulation for PS2 compatibility, also known as the PS2 Classics.
You should look into having it Frankenstein modded with a 65 or 45 nm RSX that’s currently the most permanent fix for those models assuming that your RSX died
this is why it's important for console owners to now get into the sub hobby of restoration and maintenance; Fat PS3s are super unreliable and needs some (tedious) work to get them tip top, and even then it's not permanent; Your mileage will be much more vast with a Slim, but you'll have to give up PS2 (Unless you mod it, of course). These retro machines (Cannot believe I'm saying that about PS3 now) are some of the greatest entertainment one could have in their home, but it's not as simple as buying theme anymore; They'll become mini-hobbies with the work needed. All 3s and even PS4s need new thermal paste now, so you really need to be comfortable opening a console; Slims are are pretty easy to get into and maintain, where as the fats have a lot more layers. The super slim is rather easy too, but it's mostly made of cheap plastic, so it's more about being delicate.
My first PS3 died installing Turok, second during online playing Black Ops and my 3rd the disk drive died so I gave it my friend with 25 games on the Hard Drive
The PS3 is a great system, but the bad thing is that it is an old console. It has more parts than, for example, a SNES or Mega Drive. It wears out enormously unless you know someone who can repair or maintain the console. Then you are just out of luck.
I have two slims and a super slim. The two slims died 5 years apart. The super slim has a problem with HDMI and no one can fix it. My Xbox 360 arcade jasper edition was purchased January of 2010 and jagged it 6 years later and still working until today 2024
I’m still finding myself lucky as I still have the fat but not back compact model and a slim, I try to do as much preventive maintenance as often as possible on any consoles I have. Sorry you hear your has Died
Never buy a refurbished PS3. The yellow light of death is only caused by a manufactures defect. Only buy a PS3 that has the original warranty sticker. PS3 consoles with the original warranty sticker that still work had passed the test of time after 18 years.
I got my modded ps3 in 2013, it still running great. Rebug cfw, dynamic fan cooling. Ps1/ps2/snes/nes/gen all on my dashboard too :) 2/3rds ps2 games work fine.
Few electronic devices die completely. It's usually just one part that fails. And the ironic thing is that whatever part is causing it not to work, probably costs about $1-10 for a replacement. It's the diagnostics and actual repair that are expensive. Unless you know how to diagnose it yourself and have the skill to replace what's needed.
Never had a backwards compatible Ps3 (and with backwards compatibility I mean for Ps2 games), I had 2, one Fat model that I sold it to one of my friends and a Slim model that still works fine, but if at some point it dies, then I go for a Super Slim, especially since all models can be soft-modded in one way or another as I don't care about online gaming outside Metal Gear Online 2 that was restored by the fans and don't need Sony's servers to work.
Now im wondering how long my ps3 will last 🤔 ive had mine a few years... i have the dull black fat version...i mainly use my ps3 for youtube some bluray movies.
It may be possible to save it if you replace the NEC capacitors. But if it’s the GPU then it’s toast. The GPU can be reballed but the problem is due to the design of GPU the solder balls will go wrong again eventually. If you get a Slim model made after 2011 they have the redesigned smaller nanometer GPU that doesn’t have the problems. But avoid pre 2011 models.
I’m so sorry my friend! Next one you get, have the console delidded. This process works on cutting away the glue and silicon holding the IHS lids of the CELL and RSX chips in place, reason being the actual dyes of your chips are what need to be cooler more than anything else, the paste under those lids dries out and eventually without being replaced and using the normal fan speeds, the launch PS3s especially will overheat and YLOD / permanently die. If you have a professional cut those seals away and redo the paste UNDERNEATH the IHS lids (on the dye) as well as on top, this should keep your console alive much longer AND you should be able to replace thermal paste all by yourself in EVERY spot when the time is right. I also recommend installing the 4.90 Evilnat firmware and webman and multiman with it. Webman not only allows you to play ISO backups made with multiman, but webman allows you to set your own fan speeds higher than stock to kill the heat inside further. I run my console at around 40% lowest fan speed, 80% highest, with a max temp of 65 Celsius and a PS2 fan speed of 45% (the Syscon that controls the fan leaves the fan speed set to whatever the fan is running at when you start ps2 games, commonly adding to the overheating problem and that number should always be slightly higher since ps2 games use more system resources and heat). Hope these tips help, there’s also power supplies that run colder than others you should look into the for the PAL regions (I run the APS-226 over the Z series which commonly adds heat, NTSC US console), I believe APS-227 would be the equivalent for your region!
None of this matters. If it has a 90nm GPU, it WILL die, horribly. No amount of cooling, modding, hacking or whatever will help with that. Because it's not overheating in the first place, but rather suffering from a crappy, but common GPU fault at the time known as Bumpgate. Just replace the damn thing with a 65nm GPU or a 40nm one. Such a service would be expensive, of course, but if you want a BC PS3 that won't die on you, it's gonna cost
@@SomeAngryGuy1997 I’m fully aware of the Frankenstein and underfill issues with the 90nm, unfortunately ALL of my A01s have them and they’ve taken out whatever B01 I’ve managed to come across. When I have the money or when the service comes down, I’m TOTALLY planning on having at least one of them ready for a 40nm. Though I must say, I have a January of 07 A01 with 442 days on it, delidded and with all those mods. Not a single error code yet, my lowest unit has around 42 days total runtime with all the mods but I don’t run it in case that underfill does eventually wear out overtime regardless of what you do. On the cheap the delidding and mods seem to hold up just fine, but like you said that Frankenstein unit is the end goal for sure!
@@SomeAngryGuy1997 the one thing that makes me think that there’s some correlation with heat inside; B01s tend to run hotter than A01s when you look at the fan curves, from what a delidder told me the A01s stock run somewhere around 74 Celsius on average, while the B01s run at around 80 Celsius on average. Even another 6 degrees Celsius at those high temps I’d imagine there’s a reason the exact same motherboard fails at a higher rate on a different model, not to say the 60s still can’t fail because I’ve 100% seen that too, but even out in the wild you tend to find working ones a lot more than the B01s, then any B01 you find odds are there’s a much higher chance of them being fried. I’m curious for sure, damn those 90nm chips 🤣🤣
@@SomeAngryGuy1997 THAT totally makes sense! Someone recently posted an hour and a half long video explaining how the underfill is effected and it mentioned it happens from electrons passing through the chops and wearing gaps overtime, something along those lines. By itself that didn’t add up much to me considering I have high run time units that actually seem to be the most reliable, but if you’re talking about adding heat acting as an accelerant to the underfill problem with an already bad chip, this COMPLETELY adds up now!
Most people get their's fixed by having someone take the GPU and maybe a few other bits from a PS3 slim and put them into the fat backwards compatible model. You can also throw in a full recap and apply new thermal paste too. All of these systems are aging out, so if you're super serious about it, send it off to have someone repair and recap it for you.
I lost my PS3s in 2016, 2017 and 2021. It always annoyed me how Sony saw Microsoft have the RRoD problem, mocked them for it, then proceeded to do the exact same thing. 2 of my lost ones were PS2 compatible models, the last was a Super Slim model, the Slim 2nd revision was the only good one, I'm yet to lose a Slim PS3 or Xbox 360 in general to YLoD or RRoD, but I really wish Sony would do what Bleem! did, where the Dreamcast could not only do PS1 games, but even upscale them and anti-alias them too, but do this to make the PS5 something more than just an expensive paperweight.
I know the PS3 Cell CPU is hard to work with, but if my modest PC can emulate it with third party software on an Intel Arc A380 and i5 7400, then the PS5 can easily do that with official software too. I bet they just want to make more remakes for full AAA price at the expense of the PS3 and it's amazing library.
You could do the next best thing which would be to get yourself a ps3 slim and install custom firmware in order to get full ps2 compatibility. Yes, it's still technically emulating it, but still it's playing on official hardware and it plays good. And you can use your own discs.
I’m worries about when or if my ps4 dies. I don’t know what I’ll do! Can I get my save data, photos, accounts and games back? How was your experience for the ps3?
Save data would be accessible I think if you're signed up to ps plus as it backs it up in the cloud. Captures I don't think are though. As long as you know your account info you should be able to get your games and saves fine.
Sorry to hear Picked up another lol right on, I’m on my second PS3 I have a PS4 slim still going strong and recently ordered a PS4 pro like new Skipping current gen for now other than my Steam Deck
I’m lucky I’m still running my launch ps3 tho I only use it for ps2 at this point as I also have a slim that I use for ps3 and ps1. I would suggest CeX they give 2 years warranty on consoles and I know a couple of friends have got replacements phat ps3s tho looking at there website they are becoming more and more rare think it’s about time I opened mine back up and changed the thermal paste and pads again Any way good luck
My slim PS3 that I had since '09 just died last week. The thermal paste was completely dried out, so I am fairly sure the chips got cooked because of it. So I know what you're feeling. Currently looking for a cheap super-slim model
I had problems with the launch of the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 games wouldn’t work, my PlayStation 1 games was on a green screen, so I couldn’t enjoy that, my battery life on the controller had terrible charge problems that ruined playing any kind of PlayStation game, it was very frustrating, at a certain point, I just got rid of the PlayStation 3, and never bought a new PlayStation ever again, I just stick to PlayStation 1 and 2, and they never worked on compatibility on the newer consoles, which is another reason why I won’t switch to the newer consoles, it’s sad to see the direction that Sony has gone too, after the PlayStation 2, I truly feel like they lost their roots!😢
Got a messed up fat 60gb. It turns on but crashes with artifacts because it has an micro tear in the RSX GPU... I think it can be fixed with a heat gun. My slim still works,.or at least it did when I turned it on 2022 😅
I mainly try not to buy more games if I have a bit of a backlog. Just play what you gave. When I was a kid I realized I'm more addicted to buying games then actually playing them. I usually don't buy a game until I am satisfied with the last one. Sometimes you will stumble upon a game your just not interested in. Sometimes I go back to games I really loved and play them again. But I realized usually with my xbox 360 games I'd play them on a xbox one for a bit then just stop. Not really playing them for long. So I just got rid of them eventually and I'm not really bothered by it.
Is your Country using 220 Volt electricity? Are you connecting you PS3 thru a power strip for power surge protection? Seem likely that's your Fat PS3 problem.
I found a fat BC PS3 at a thrift store for $70. I thought it was a steal, and considered replacing my slim model. Then, about a month later, it started having issues. I ended up selling it for parts. Made by money back, thankfully, but these fat models are so prone to failure that I'm just gonna stick to my slim model. It's like buying an original xbox 360; its not a matter of IF it dies on you, but WHEN.
Don’t give up on it. Send it off for a Frankenstein. It’s a swap of the old 90nm RSX for a 40nm. You could also do a replacement of the Nec Tokins for some tantalizers at the same time. And all of your data should be fine.
With the success of RPCS3 and PS2 emulation being almost perfect on higher-end PCs, it makes no sense why Sony doesn't iterate a new Playstation. The PS5 is already 4 years old. Next year it will be 5 years old. The PS6 needs to be able to play PS1-PS5 & 6 games. PS1-3 is already able to be emulated. Sony still has the keys to the kingdom when it comes to PS3 emulation. With their knowledge of the source and architecture and resources, PS3 compatibility would be perfect. The PS4 is also beginning to be emulated on PC as well but the PS5 can play PS4 games and if the PS6 can have the same sort of software and architecture, it would make it even easier for Sony to just bring PS4 and PS5 compatibility to the next generation. If Sony made the next PS backwards compatible from PS1 to PS5, it would be one hell of a console and would be the only one I would own.
Unless you mod to run a more aggressive fan profiles, delid it and change thermal paste these are always knocking on deaths door. You can prolong its life if you do what I said above.
It sucks right? I'll never forget when that little yellow light came on in 2010 from my launch PS3. I don't want to get a fat PS3 ever again because of that. Sony offered me the slim model when I called and still charged $150 for a replacement at the time.
i think this is why emulation is a thing it's gotten to the point where you can play them all on your phone or pcs or laptops and even something like the steamdeck for example ive been playing ps2 and ps3 games on my lenovo legion go which looks like s beefy nintendo switch
@TheGamesDungeon Well actually there is a replacement, they want to give me a slim so i choose yes because i had no choice but then i noticed i also had a og PS4 of my brother, so i was sort of saved.
I just settled for a PS2, considering those PS3's weren't reliable. I got a SCPH-39001 model PS2 , which is the best version, and it has the best laser for DVDs, CDs, as well as PS1 and PS2 games. I stopped caring for Modern gaming, even if there was a small handful of Modern games I still play, but I went back to playing a PS2, best decision I ever made!
Me too, PS2 fat is the most reliable console. PS2 slims are so weak and fragile and should be avoided. There are so many great games for PS2, they are cheap, easy to find, controllers do not need batteries which is a plus for me, and I still use my trusty old CRT Toshiba (as old as a PS2 fat) to play my favorite games. Never had a PS3!
If you really want to hold on to the ps3 fat back compat model without fear of it breaking on you just Frankenstein it and it will definitely work for at least 3-5 years
The biggest problem with PS3 is the fact that Sony locks the hard drive to the system so if it dies anything on the gard drive can never be accessed on a different system without formatting. If you have save game data from ps 1,2 and 3 games it is gone forever if the system dies. Sony sucks.
the fat ps3 problem has been heavily researched by some people like RipFelix and it unfortunately goes down to a defects in the manufacturing processes of CPUS and GPUs at the time.
Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to detail that. I'm surprised there's many left of them at all!
The CPUs are beasts. Its the RSX/GPU that has the issues you mentioned.
A 45 nm gpu is like 20 dollars on eBay though. You just need the skills

Damn, sorry to hear that. My Fat PS2 BC PS3 died on me back in 2014, got it fixed. And ever since early 2016, I've been using a Super Slim and keeping the fat model safe for emergencies....

Great to see that many years since Reviewmageddon, the two of you keep in touch. You're a truly inseparable duo. ;)
woah that's cool, what kind of review copies do you have?
@@AbdAbdAbdAbd the white label ones that come in a thin jewel case, any special press kits i got were normally on xbox.
They didn't get damaged in the flood then?
Also
Keep in mind when buying digital games on the ps3. When the Internal cr battery dies, you will lose access to digital games, DLC and updates. Along with the internet connection. Sony will never fix the cr battery issue on ps3. Even tho they patched it for PS4 And PS5.
I know my feeling I just emulate the ps3 games at this point my yellow light since 2016 my was a 80 gi second gen I jail break it too play ps2 games you don’t need a ps3 for ps2 just jail break it I did it too slim ps3 I just got
that helped out for my ps3 as well it was a 80 gb ps3 slim i modded i can play p2 and ps3 games now
Just found this channel and as I was watching your video you seemed really familiar - The 14:03 mark answers why!
I missed out on alot of ps3 games aswell but I'm playing them in 2024,also got a ps3 super slim 500gb with 8 games for just £45.
Congraturations reapair that now PlayStation newer be good
One of the reasons why I do not have a PS3 fat model is for this reason.
I keep mine around for MGS4, man that game will never age for me 🥰
Nice to hear from you again :)
@@RetroWez dude, nice to hear from YOU again! Always good to see your stuff on this channel ❤️
I understand your pain I lost my first generation PlayStation 3 several years ago when I tried to play grand theft auto five on it, the game was so intense my PlayStation 3 suffered a total system failure. My condolences.
@9:04 you’re not the only one as much as I love horror games I don’t get to actually complete them all
My PS3 super slim died on July 2022 after almost 8 years of owning it since December of 2014. The next month i bought a PS4 Slim.
Does a slim PS2 have hdmi?
There are HDMI cables for PS2 (e.g., like those made by Pound). I personally prefer using component video cables myself.
Hope your Slim lasts. Mine is from 2010 and luckily still works without issue.
Fingers crossed!
It's a shame as all the Fat PS3s look so elegant and artistic but they all eventually will die. I have had 2 die on me.
Every fat ps3 is bound to break its only a matter of when its like the first version of the xbox 360
This is genuinely crazy, mine just died yesterday after years and I’m so sad, GPU died.
I feel your loss!
You should look into having it Frankenstein modded with a 65 or 45 nm RSX that’s currently the most permanent fix for those models assuming that your RSX died
Mine hasn’t gave out yet but I don’t want that day to come. How can we avoid this?
this is why it's important for console owners to now get into the sub hobby of restoration and maintenance; Fat PS3s are super unreliable and needs some (tedious) work to get them tip top, and even then it's not permanent; Your mileage will be much more vast with a Slim, but you'll have to give up PS2 (Unless you mod it, of course).
I guess to avoid it from dying, you have to make sure to do maintenance by keeping it clean inside by removing Dust and reapplying Thermal Paste
I’m still finding myself lucky as I still have the fat but not back compact model and a slim, I try to do as much preventive maintenance as often as possible on any consoles I have.
Sorry you hear your has Died
What keeps braking down on them is it same thing. I ask so I try to upgrade on mine so it doesn't break down. Thanks
I just paid $330 for mine it came with original box and games i love it im sorry for your loss i hope you can get another one
Dunno if you're aware, but mvg did a video recently about how you can play PS2 backups on a PS3 slim, meaning you won't need a fat PS3 again
It's not really a solution though, it's far from "plug & play" not to mention many games don't work properly even with bespoke config files
you can get the thermal paste reapplied. Might help one of the phat consoles. The slim ones are probably fine but you could consider it one day.
Just got a slim with cfw. Have mine for 14 years and still working as first day
Never had a backwards compatible Ps3 (and with backwards compatibility I mean for Ps2 games), I had 2, one Fat model that I sold it to one of my friends and a Slim model that still works fine, but if at some point it dies, then I go for a Super Slim, especially since all models can be soft-modded in one way or another as I don't care about online gaming outside Metal Gear Online 2 that was restored by the fans and don't need Sony's servers to work.
Slim and Super Slim ones are durable but they lack backward compatibility feature .
@@jk-474 It's not really the heat itself that causes it. It just happens to accelerate an existing problem
Mine did as well...had it since launch of November 2006...it was still a good BD Player and on January 2024 I turned it on but a blank screen 😢
My 60GB died after 14 Years YLOD happy a had a New One as Backup 😘
Sorry to hear
Picked up another lol right on, I’m on my second PS3
I have a PS4 slim still going strong and recently ordered a PS4 pro like new
Skipping current gen for now other than my Steam Deck
The original PS3 and Xbox 360 models were not built to last.
My pc broke this year 😢 and still broken till this day but I’ve got 2 ps3s
My ps3 got YLOD same day you posted this video. :((
My backwards compatibility model has stopped reading discs for some reason
Oh no! Is it an easy fix?
Bad laser
My slim PS3 that I had since '09 just died last week. The thermal paste was completely dried out, so I am fairly sure the chips got cooked because of it. So I know what you're feeling. Currently looking for a cheap super-slim model
R.I.P. 💖✨🕊️
Had 3 of those, they all break. I don't bother anymore. Even the slim ones break.
Got a messed up fat 60gb. It turns on but crashes with artifacts because it has an micro tear in the RSX GPU... I think it can be fixed with a heat gun. My slim still works,.or at least it did when I turned it on 2022 😅
I am so sorry for your loss dog T-T
R.I.P to that PS3
Still got my launch ps3 60gb. She still works
I'm jealous! It's great that it's still working well. Treasure it!
@@RetroWez why not get a slim PS3 and mod it. You can play ps1/2/3 games on a moded slim ps3 even with physical discs
You should do a collaboration video with @TronicsFix, he seems to fix almost everything.
There are ways to play PS2 games on the slim PS3. Was playing The Punisher PS2 game a couple of hours ago.
I still own my three ps3 consoles two of them are the original version and one of them is the slim version in good condition.
Might want to look into a Frankenstein PS3. Best of luck.
Always go with high quality component video cables, they will always give you better color and detail in the low light areas of games.
Best thing I did was trade in my Fat PS3, and got a slim PS2, and a slim PS3.
Don’t give up on it. Send it off for a Frankenstein. It’s a swap of the old 90nm RSX for a 40nm. You could also do a replacement of the Nec Tokins for some tantalizers at the same time. And all of your data should be fine.
My recomendation would be to pair up a ps2 with an OSSC. They image quality is great, even on a modern HD TV.
We have seen the death of 5 PS3 60gb consoles. My 120gb model and my two 160gb slims still run today.
Wez, I have a fat PS3 80GB with an SSD inside. I'm not using it, so I could help ya out and gift it. Let me know if you want it.
That's a really kind offer, but not one I can accept. Thank you though!
mine from 2009 still works. ps3 slim.
Yea i play PS3 on my Steam Deck and Gaming Laptop
I feel just like you rn, my og PS4 died a few months ago and i sent it to Sony only to get a message back that it couldn't be fixed 😢
Oh that's gutting! Shame they didn't just replace it.
@TheGamesDungeon Well actually there is a replacement, they want to give me a slim so i choose yes because i had no choice but then i noticed i also had a og PS4 of my brother, so i was sort of saved.
I dont use my og ps4 anymore in fear it might die. I still have P.T. on it! so I stored it away and just use my ps5 to play ps4 games 😂
@joeyisabsb1 There is always a way to download P.T again.
Can you restore it?
If you really want to hold on to the ps3 fat back compat model without fear of it breaking on you just Frankenstein it and it will definitely work for at least 3-5 years
my ps3 died too after 13 years since 2010
It's alright, emulation will pick up the pieces. No biggie. It's one less thing you will have to worry about maintaining anyways.
Mine died in 2019 😢
The biggest problem with PS3 is the fact that Sony locks the hard drive to the system so if it dies anything on the gard drive can never be accessed on a different system without formatting. If you have save game data from ps 1,2 and 3 games it is gone forever if the system dies. Sony sucks.
When will the funeral be. I want to pay my respects
