The launch 60GB PS3 definitely requires more preventative maintenance.
Thinking about getting new thermal paste, maybe sending it out to get the CPU reballed... maybe an external power supply mod?

I have a PlayStation 3. It’s a refurbished PlayStation 3. I don’t like refurbished game consoles because they always freeze up in the middle of your game playing. Do yourself a favor, don’t buy refurbished game consoles.
The CPU on the older PS3 models are actually pretty reliable. The GPU is whats prone to failure but thankfully it can be replaced with a more reliable one

The Max a PS3 will support without causing issues is 1.5tb, which is the reason for the PS3 having issues with the 2tb

Love the videos about retro tech I'm 52 my first computer was hand made had 1kb ram and no colour or software. Seeing progress from that point of view the ps3 was a big step up for me such a gap I'm power from previous gen and when I played uncharted I was blown away. I was quite fond of the PS4 era, but going from PS2 to PS3 was probably the last time I felt a truly gigantic generational leap in graphics.

I bought a 60gb PS3 broken back in 2009 and got it repaired for less than it would have cost to get one of the slimmer ones. Still going strong!

@@buffimpreza07 sent it to a shop that specialized in console repair. It cost like 120 including shipping I think? I think the console itself was like 80-100. Been a long time so I don't remember the exact prices.

Ps3 days for gaming were peak! Getting home from school, setting up the split screen zombies with my dad and my mates from school and playing for hours. Games like resistance, army of two, mag, red dead redemption, black ops2, mw3 were peak! Being able to download random movies online, going to the video store to rent games for the weekend, free online and PS home. Psn getting hacked over Christmas and not being able to play online. The lore that came from that was exciting, with lizard squad 😂 We really didn't know how good we had it! Wish I could relive it all!

Got my PS3 as a new to me unit from my brother. Installing custom Fitmware was great. Running my games off Internal drive is great. Less use of optical drive as well should prolong life.
Fun Fact: their is an FPS / Temp Counter for PS3 CFW
During gameplay press the Home button, then Press and Hold L3 + R3 until you See FPS Enabled. You can do the same thing to disable it too.

Sony just displays GiB as GB, for some reason.
The larger storage allocation is because it's a percentage of the disk.
8% of the space is reserved for firmware, patches, OS, etc. The bigger the disk, the more space is reserved.
You can set it to 1% with an app called "PS3 Unlock HDD Space".

The modern updates are for blue ray compatibility. Many people (including me) still use it as a movie player. It’s also used to mess with homebrew, which is a pain for me
I wish i kept my original back in the day. As a kid I never knew about the backwards compatibility or even that all models played PS1 games. Don’t know how I missed that info back in the day lol.
well on the ps2 compatibility that was dropped early into the ps3 generation so that could have been missed by a lot of people
If you jailbreak it, you can have most of the PS2 compatibility back. I have dozens of PS2 games on my Slim PS3, most of them are great but a few have minor issues, all playable though. Highly requested PS2 games like Rule of Rose, Xenosaga and Shadow Hearts trilogies or Haunting Ground all work great.

Oh yeah this Vid just reminded me that PS3s only take up to 1TB of internal storage, also would love to see you take the console apart and possibly clean it one day. My family owns the US version of that console and would love to see u take it apart, hopefully if u do this it won’t end up like the PSX but it looks like this consoles in better condition than said PSX
I still own my 80GB PS3 CFW that i bought if i remember correctly from 2013/2014 its been through tough time like dealing with YLOD for couple years and redo thermal paste because of unexpected overheating but it still holds until today even though i don't get to play it that often anymore, but it is a gem for me that this console been with me since i was in elementary school until I'm in college seven semester

I love this review of the old 60gb checha01. I've had a few myself. I have one currently which heats up and needs some attention. When I was a kid this was the model I wanted. I convinced my mom to buy a refurbished one off eBay when I was about 11 or 12 (27 now but I won't be for long time hurries on). I rode a b-line bus with it in my lap and lugged it around the day I got it to get it from my mom's to my dad's place. I also grinded mlg game battles but for mw2, blops, and mw3. I'm surprised you didn't buy a US region console. I'm sure the same console for the US market with the box couldn't cost much more than this one you got from Japan. I've never had the k01 80gb but I wonder how much different the software emulation really is from having the hardware. Of course there's the other issue of 100% backwards compatibility. I'm rambling. I bought an Xbox 360 recently and it was a bit of a interesting setup. I owned one long ago but had sold it and with all other changes in the Microsoft landscape getting back to one held quite a few surprises.

Samsungs might specifically have 100GB or so reserved off their actual capacity in case of SSDs - could be a firmware specific thing, so it automatically runs TRIM on itself by accessing that "hidden" partition. I know the PS3 does shave off a bit of storage but nowhere near 100GB.
btw, proud owner of the 20GB variant w/ black trim :) model CECHB00. Also loved the "KANSEI DORIFTO!?" moment you had on Ridge Racer. I should pick that game up as well.

I remember when the first jailbreak usbs started coming out. Then you could make your own. I JB immediately. Then there was cat and mouse with Sony, they started the bans, I bought another ps3 just so i could keep the JB one on a burner ID. All thanks to good ole GeoHot at the time.

yeah when i was looking for upgrading my slim ps3 to an ssd i read online that it officially supports 1tb max, but some said you can format a 2tb disk up to 1,5tb and it will work fine, but aint gonna buy a 2tb drive to gamble and get 500 extra gb 😂
Yeah I have two 60 gig PS3 and hands down you need to repaste that sucker asap and maybe replace the pads with modern efficient ones. I didn't get heavy into modding but depending on Revision, there's slightly more efficient PSU and fan you can swap out. There's 7 blade and 9 blade fan but IMO the 7 blade is the one to have cause it runs bit more efficient and blades have more surface area to move air. PSU has a version that doesn't get as hot

There's a pkg for CFW you can download that gives you back a percentage of space that the OS takes up. Giving you I think 8% more storage.
It's called PS3 Unlock HDD Space, you run the pkg once and you instantly have 8% more storage on your drive.

I have the PS3 slim I still use it sometimes and I do have hen installed to it so I can run backups of my games and run PS2 games on it when it can't lol

I recently bought a mint condition PS3 fat to play MGS4, Killzone Zone 2, GoW3, Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm 2-3, and Uncharted 1-3. It looks great on a 720p display.
Though my favorite console is still the PS2 fat. Nothing beats playing games like MGS2, Silent Hill 2, Zone of the Enders, Ace Combat, etc on a CRT TV. It's just a magical experience.
I'm glad that sony finally switched to the blu ray disc format on the ps3 due to being able fit a larger capacity of games for each game disc. Meanwhile, the blu ray discs are more durable than there dvd counter parts in terms of scratch resistance with the anti scratch resistant coating on the blu ray discs. I wish music on cds have the same anti scratch coating on them like the blu ray discs. I still only buy and support physical copies of movies, music and video games.

There was no way that I was getting an original PS3 back in the day; didn't have a job yet, and my folks couldn't rationalize the price. But, I eventually got a Slim for Christmas in 2010, and that became my main console. Now a days, I don't use it as much as I used to between buying other consoles and PCs, but I did install a 1TB hard drive and Cobra when Jim Ryan threatened to close the store.
I would love to see it get Frankenstein’ed by Computer Booter. Sony have done the Frankensteins before but it was a little bit different from how Computer Booter does it. Booter is based out of Carmichael, California. But You could also try to overclock the RSX if you are brazen enough.
I just brought PS3 slim last month & I gotta say its pretty good. Only games i got right now are
1. Uncharted 2 among thieves
2.rachaet & clank tools of destruction & all 4 one.

I still own a PS3 80gb software B.C. version. The only issue I have is the Blue-ray drive has issues ejecting discs.

My cousin had a launch PS3 and one day it stopped working so he bought another one. I bought his old one for $20 and just reset it with a button press and worked fine.
Wish I knew about Safe mode and all that stuff back in the day as well lol. My brother had bought one overseas ( he was in the Army at the time) and sent it home. It was a fat PS3 and worked like a charm until one system update that ended up corrupting something. Games would play fine, but usually after a few minutes of running the screen would start to fill up with purple pixels as if the screen was tearing and eventually crash. Had I known about safe mode I would have tried to reset the system completely, but I didn't and since it was bought from overseas there was no warranty. Left it there to collect dust till my brother came back and I think he got rid of it lol.

I still have mine from back then. It was my bedroom Netflix machine after getting something newer for the living room. Although nowadays I don´t have a TV in my bedroom anymore, as I value sleep hygiene more. I´ll never sell it, my GTA V safegame somehow glitched and all cars, even taxis and police cars are upgraded to the max somehow...

i picked up my ps 3 slim at Walmart's during black Friday for $150. i bought mine back in 2014 or 2015. i installed a 500gb hdd in it
I'd certainly give it a good service and redo the thermal paste.
Im going to guess that its using 103gigs of space not for the OS.
Im assuming the ps3 OS configures the partitions of the storage based on size at roughly 11%.
55gigs would be 6 gigs, 49 free
931gigs would be 102gigs, 829 free.
Im not sure why the recovery environment or any other partion would need to be that large and or if its just a default setting for partitioning with an oversight of storage capacity.
Just seems to be way more than necessary.

Sony still updates PS3s to update the Blu-ray drive encryption key.
This video makes me want to get the thick ps3 for ps2 backwards compatibility and upgrade the hard drive with like a 500gb sata ssd. It might be overkill but at least all the game save files for the ps3 and ps2 games will be saved on the ssd when playing the games. Unlike my ps4, I have to keep on deleting games just to have room to save my ps4 game data on the ps4 hard drive. Game consoles should be like 4tb minimum as the base model since newer games take up alot of storage space especially when storing so many games on the internal storage on the game consoles. 1tb is barely enough let alone 2 tb to store game console game data.

Base 10 vs base 2 formatting of drives means a 1tb drive will have 931GB of storage. This is normal.
I have a FAT 60gig PS3. But its sitting to the side. Cause I think some soldering went bad on it. So it no works currently. So it just sits there gathering dusts.
Incorrect on the 80gb. They aren’t software emulation. It is a hybrid of software and hardware. The E model retained the ps2 GPU on board and emulated the CPU. it was a mixture. Not just 100 percent emulation
You should frankenstein it, the GPU in early PS3s is notoriously unreliable (I am referring to the 90nm RSX). The later GPUs are much more reliable, not having any widespread issues. You can retrofit either a 65nm or a 40nm (the 22nm has a different pinnout). The 40nm is technically better, since you can overclock it, but you cant use other OS. With the 65nm you can't overclock but you can use other OS.
To be honest I upgraded my PC and just sold my PS3, as it was just annoying that a bunch of games would still dip into 10-20fps.
I still frequently use my PS3 phat systems, I've got a dev kit and a 60gb debugger, unfortunately it's a pal region 60gb which doesn't have full hardware backwards compatibility so PS2 games like persona 3 won't boot at all
if you're looking for thermal paste that's good on the PS3 I'd suggest using thermal grizzly's paste, it's what I stuck on my debugger... I pretty much had to, there was no paste left... not even flakes.
try getting a decr 1400 PS3... you know the one that doesn't look like it belongs in a server rack

Is crazy I just snaged one on Facebook marketplace in great condition with its void warranty sticker still there had not been updated since 2015 and the fan is quiet and ps2 games work flawlessly only 70$ I could not give that man the money quicker he had 35 messages on his phone for this ps3 lol

i have an 80gb cfw fat ps3 and i love it i had another but it died on me i still got it in case i wanna fix it but im so happy my dad had two prior now i have a ps3 w essentially everything i need, i do wish i had that model just to have non patched fully compatible ps3
i also added the samsung ssd and looovee the very minimal difference it makes hahah but its cooler quieter and have way more space for ps2 and ps3 games

I would like to see an FPGA powered clone system that can play PS3 games in 4k or 8k resolution in the near future
there was was an additional differance between the 20 & 60 gb and the 80GB, the 20 n 60 ALSO retains the PS2's RAMBUS Ram, the 80 Retained the GS but Emulated in software the Emotion Engine and Games would share the PS3's Memory. this is what caused a reduction in Overall compatability in the global PS2 Library.
*edit* becarefull w/ using an SSD not only are the PS3's SSD"blind" (lacking TRIM Support.), is it kinda.... the drive is "too fast" and you may encounter game deadlock conditions. ultimatly a Mechincal drive is best. Just dont go with an SSD over a terabyte. (also why your loosing some drive capacity, theres a cache partition being made and it still reserves despite being removed, space for OtherOS, EvilNat 4.89+ has options to reclaim that space.)

As a PS3 Slim owner, when playing something like GoW 3, it's louder than my PS4 Pro but then it stabilizes for a few mins before being loud again.
The PS4 Pro also depends on the game and scene. DoA 6 sometimes after the matches makes my PS4 take off for some reason but most of the time it's quiet-ish.
