These days, the Slim model is probably better. There is no YLOD, it still supports CFW (the 2000, 2100 and 2500 revisions specifically) and PS2 back compat has improved tremendously. Compatibility is slightly higher than 80% nowadays and if you include those with only minor issues, it's over 90%. You can also just get the HD remasters instead for games that emulate poorly like the PS2 Ratchet & Clank trilogy. Also, keep in mind it's something that is still being updated and supported so expect more compatibility in the next few years. The BC models are becoming more worthless in my eyes as the years go on since their only appeal was PS2 support despite being ticking time bombs. Same for the Super Slims but because of HEN instead.
Unless you have a VERY SPECIFIC game in mind, there are a lot of PS2 Classics to play digitally on the PS3 if you absolutely MUST use a wireless controller and HDMI. Also PS2 injects work really well, and more games are getting custom configs every day. As time passes on, the "it only does everything" slogan kept true.
Honestly agreed not to mention if you have a semi decent pc PCSX2 nightly builds have gotten to a point of being a no brainer, Easy to set up, plenty of customizations and near flawless compatibility for the entire PS2 library. I love the bc models but even with a lot of modding and gpu replacements from the slims they are still to some degree ticking time bombs. You might get some years out of them but some day eventually they will die. the PS3 slims especially the 2100 models are a no brainer, They have smaller GPUs then the 2000s models and different capacitors as well and can still be jail broken and even have the LED mod done and they are all fairly inexpensive.
Honestly I feel like the issues with the old BC units is really overblown. The YLOD is certainly an issue but a lot of my family bought that generation of PS3 and I've only seen one YLOD (even then it wasn't even the board, it was the PSU). It's not WORTH the money it's being sold for on eBay, it's stupid when you can just get a Slim 2000 or even a Slim 3000 for way cheaper, but it's not as much a time bomb as the internet makes it out to be. Mine is about roughly 16 years old and my cousin's and brother's aren't too far off from that age. Again I wouldn't recommend it since it's really not that much better than what your PC can do but it's really not that hard to keep it in working condition either.
PS3 has a self cleaning mode that usually takes care of the loud fan issue if you don’t wanna open it up and clean it from the inside manually, or it could be that you didn’t change the fan setting when opening webman mod for the first time
Yup, I’ve been recommended to either go through the processes you described or go into multiman and limit the fan speed. Isn’t a huge issue just happens to kick up sometimes when switching between games.
Since you like the modded ps3, you will definitely like a homebrewed ps2. Especially now that the ps2 can hold the entire ps2 library in a 16TB HDD. For 23 years it was capped at 2TBs until recently that cap was removed. For comparison, the ps3 is capped at 1tb unless you use external drives.
For sure gonna try to grab one whenever I can muster the extra dough for a drive that large lol. That’s miraculous tho that it’s possible to fit the entire library to fit on a single drive and for that console to actually be able to read it.

someone correct me if i’m wrong, but the reason the xbox 360 is so hard to softmod is because there’s a chip on the motherboard consisting of physical fuses that overload and break on purpose after an update to prevent you from downgrading the firmware
When you mentioned spending more money to get a working setup than it would have cost for something brand new I was locked in, been there way too many times. 😂
The PS3 has a desktop UI available because there was a brief period it was going to be sold as a PC as well as console and they just didn't remove it from the version that came to market since about 20,000 of them where sold before release to institutions like the Department of Defense to do processing and somehow these consoles ended up on the secondary market after they where done with.
I usually launch PS2 iso files from webMAN and they work just fine after the PS2 patches/configs that were made for the emulator (idk where I got them but somewhere and might be on the evilnat cfw by default). That fan was probably set on a bad fan curve, webman can fix that easily
