I have had a bad 2024 so far. This is why getting a PlayStation 3 is the best thing that's happened to me this year.

The PS3 has such a good library. Not all of it has been ported to PS4/5, either. I want to play Overlord 1 and 2 again soon(ish).

One thing that is really great about the PS3 is that its VERY easy to soft mod. And each of the models have their own strengths and weaknesses in this regard
Phat PS3:
Pros: All variants of this model are compatable with Custom Firmware (CFW) and Hybrid Firmware (HFW)
Has hardware based PS2 Backwards Compatibility, meaning PS2 ISO's can be stored on the system and ran as if it was a regular PS2.
Easiest installation proccess as it can be done all on the console without any external peripherals
Cons: About as reliable as a piece of wet toast
Easily the hardest and most expensive to find
Has easily the worst on board storage space of any of the PS3's, meaning external storage is almost a necessity for storing certain games
Verdict: Best overall... if it decides to work.
Slim PS3
Pros: Far more reliable, cheaper and easier to find than Phat PS3's
Onboard Wifi Connection makes it easier to install CFW straight from the console
Possible to install CFW and HFW on certain models
Decent storage space availability
Cons: No hardware based PS2 Backwards compatibility, while you can still play MOST PS2 games through the classics emulator built in, it will not look the best and not all games are fully compatable
Some models cannot have CFW, meaning that the more limited HFW is your only option
Being the middle child, reliability might be okay now, but in the future might be questionable (especially regarding the infamous CMOS bomb)
Verdict: The generalist pick, good at everything, but the best at nothing
Super Slim PS3:
Pros: being the newest of the set, reliability is easily the best of the 3
Comes with the most storage space, with certain models having over 500GB HDDs
Most likely the cheapest as they dont have the desirability factor as the Phats or the the nostalgia factor of the Slim
Cons: by far the most limited regarding soft modding, you can ONLY install HFW on the system
No hardware based PS2 Backwards compatibility, but still has the Classics emulator the slim has.
Requires external peripherals to install HFW (a thumbdrive)
Verdict: Easily the best for storing and playing PS3 games, however its far from the best for everything else.
