    Some important context to this is that they were almost like a rap boy band. They were a complete overnight sensation. This release put Def Jam records on the map and was the first rap album to go number 1 on the Billboard album chart.
    It’s hard to think who they could be compared to in the modern day, but they got massive immediately and they were like 20 years old. They could easily have been seen as a joke or one hit wonder.
    They grew to dislike their fratty sophomoric image of this album very quickly and made the decision that changed the outlook of hip hop and popular music as a whole: they split from Russell Simmons (the dust smoking manager mentioned in the song), Rick Rubin and Def Jam and made one of the most progressive, visionary, uncommercial and important albums in any genre, a singular artistic vision all of their own, Paul’s Boutique.

    I've never heard of hip hop/rap being called "fusion". I usually hear fusion as referring to a type of jazz (usually mixed with rock music or funk), which was mainly popular in the 1970s.

    • @paranoidrodent
      @paranoidrodent 2 года назад +6

      I think fusion is being used in the looser sense, to simply describe a song that meshes two genres together. Fusion jazz is more of a coherent concept and subgenre of jazz. Of course, back in the 80s, this was generally just viewed as a rap song. I certainly considered it rap during my teens. It is only with hindsight that the punk elements are obvious to me.
      Guitars in popular rap weren't weird at the time. The definition of rap was looser then, with almost any rebellious-sounding spoken word with a strong beat pretty much just being lumped in at the time.

    • @Musicvegan01
      @Musicvegan01 2 года назад +3

      @@paranoidrodent The very early rap records were mostly based on funk, R&B, and disco music. A lot of those songs were long and were only released on 12" maxi singles. "Rappers Delight" & "Adventures Of Super Rhyme" were around 15 minutes each, which was the also the case with some disco songs. A few years later is when hip hop started to get different sounds. It was Run DMC who had a more rock sound with "Rock Box" on their first album. I think that's why they got on MTV, when the hip hop acts before them didn't.

      I've heard it from the very start. It was notorious for "fusing" with literally everything, that's what made it interesting. There wasn't any kind of specific sound that it had to follow. At the very start there wasn't very many live hip hop bands, so it was all samples fused into hip hop in some way, the 70's, 80's and 90's were insanely experimental.

    People think rap metal was born in the late 90’s. The Beasties we’re doing in the mid 80’s.

    • @paranoidrodent
      @paranoidrodent 2 года назад +1

      The Beasties are probably better described as rap punk but yeah, I get your point. Faith No More was recording Epic by 1988 too (not to mention Anthrax doing their thing). Nu Metal definitely took the fusion more mainstream as a sub-genre but it incorporates later rap/hip hop styles, metal growls (with a few exceptions) and some grunge influences too (very different guitar work from the 80s stuff). This earlier stuff that that deep thumping hip hop beat so common in 80s rap while nu metal has some hip hop beats but tends to be more straightforward metal on that front.

      @andrewstableford9781 2 года назад

      @paranoidrodent I didn’t want to go that in depth but yeah I agree with everything you said. Faster Pussycat also did a rap rock song called Babylon back in the 80’s. We shouldn’t forget RUN-DMC and Aerosmith either.

    • @paranoidrodent
      @paranoidrodent 2 года назад

      @@andrewstableford9781 Very cool. I'm not particularly familiar with Faster Pussycat (I've heard the name but couldn't name a song). The RUN-DMC/Aerosmith collab came to mind since it was a big hit (heck, it revived Aerosmith's career) but I left it out since they didn't really explore it further beyond that song and each band stuck to their genre. It wasn't like the guys in RUN-DMC grabbed a guitar or Steve Tyler rapped a few bars (although Walk This Way has a certain sorta-spoken word cadence, I guess). The Beasties and Faith No More were clearly exploring fusing rap with heavier guitar-driven styles so I went with them.

    ahhh, the '85-'86 era for music was a thing to behold.Both bands were on the road of god-hood in their respective genres & it was mostly a random idea to put the the Beasties & King (Slayer were label mates & messing around in the same studio polishing up Reign In Blood) together as after the producers admits because neither really knew much about the others music they didnt jive really well. But still, all that & they mngd 2 make a masterpiece tht will live forever in BOTH bands librarys. SLAAAAAYYYYYEEEEEERRRRRR!!

    Years ago in high school days, I was skateboarding with a close friend of mine. I had one of those little mini-dollar store radios, the ones that pretty much fit in your palm. It was the end of the hot humid detroit summer day and we decided to go back home after skating for hours. I turned the radio on and there was silence for a few seconds on the radio. no joke the beginning of the song kicked in with that heavy guitar and we just looked at each other without even saying a word. We both knew what was up!

    You might find it interesting to know the guitar solos for this song, and "Fight for Your Right to Party" were both done by Kerry King of Slayer (the guitarist with the nails in his leather armbands). I agree. The solos in both songs are atrocious! I love me some Slayer, but Jeff's solos were much better than Kerry's. This album came out when I was like 14. I loved every song, but this was my favorite song on the album.
    *Edit* Also, it wasn't much longer after this album that Kerry started taking guitar lessons from Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. He did improve his solo technique.

    Kerry King from Slayer was asked by Rick Rubin to play the guitar parts for the album. Both bands were in the same studio, using the same producer and on the same label at that time.
