Beastie Boys - Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock. Sadly, we lost MCA (real name: Adam Yauch) in 2012, and the other two wouldn't dream of going on without him, so they hung it up, but not before they redefined the entire pop/hip-hop landscape WAY before Eminem came onto the scene. I hope you'll do "Sabotage", it's one of the coolest songs and VIDEOS of all time!! "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" was a HUGE rock song in the 80s as well.
Adam Yauch
IT REALLY SUCKS AS YOU GET OLDER AND THESE ICONS OF OUR YOUTH START DIEING OFF but it is good to have the privilege of getting older dub edged sword i suppose
YAUCH
@@YESTERYEAR_VIDEO Yup. Yauch. My bad. I need an editor....
Oh yes, Sabotage rocks! And a lot of people talk smack about the music video for it but I personally love it! It's hilarious imo :P
Kerry King, guitarist for Slayer, played the guitar riffs and solo :)
SSLLLAAAYYYERRRR!!!
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Right around the same time he was recording "Reign in Blood" with Slayer, also on Def Jam Records.
wow, I did not know that
I never really got into Beasty Boyz. I was too wrapped up in the Metal that ruled the world in those days. I did actually like this song even back then, and all these years later, now I know why. LMFAO.....I fckn love Slayer. Thanks for that info. I can't believe I didn't know that. 😂
“Why did we ever get away from this kind of cadence?”
Best quote ever!!!!
This whole album was a masterpiece.
💯 facts.
I listened to the cassette so many time ever bit of the printing rubbed off, just a plain white tape at the end. Great, great album
and the FIRST rap album to go to number 1 on the Billboard pop charts and deservedly so.
@@TunzBrockI popped the tape… so I know what you mean
3 or 4 lost cassettes and a couple of cds...this album was expensive to me! LOL!!
I and we all (I think) would like to see Amber’s cool parents presenting their top5 all time favourite songs.
Great suggestion!!!!
Yes!!!!!!
Sadly it would just be her mom. I remember her saying her dad had passed away.
@@VENOMS_WRAITH okay, didn’t know that
MCA was a great guitarist. Losing him was on us all
“Licensed to Ill” is absolutely a masterpiece album. 100% classic. I bought the cassette, then the CD and now also have it digitally. It’s a start to finish LP. So glad you are experiencing ALL of Beasties flavas.
Facts, facts, facts, facts, facts! This entire album “Licensed to ill’ is da bomb. Every single song, holds and stands on its on. I owned the cassette back in ‘86. Damn, the 80’s…..how I miss you so.
@@vegasbaby3669 we are fortunate to have such amazing music to take us back!
I 100% agree! It’s one of those albums you can listen to from beginning to end and you can play in its entirety! Not a bad song on the entire album!
It's their weakest album man

Beastie Boys were never weak.
Kerry King of Slayer needs some acknowledgement for this masterpiece.
For shore!!!
'Why did *we* ever get away from this type of cadence and this type of lyrics...why?'
My darling, I've been asking that since I fell out of love with RAP during the 90s. :(
Early 90’s wasn’t bad, but by the mid 90’s it really went downhill.
@@taoist32 When rap went it got rougher. When it went south it went to crap.
@@taoist32 I meant when it went west it got rough. When it south it stop making sense, to me.

Been listening rap/hiphop since '82. Incredible time. But then came the 90's, ugh.
Beastie Boys "sabotage" live on the David Letterman show.... they play their own instruments, and there are more beasties than just the three MCs... also "Three MCS and one DJ" featuring Mix Master Mike, but it's got to be the video ...actually all of their videos are fly fresh dope and phat!
That's Kerry King from slayer on guitar. They are on the same label and we're using same studio as slayer and asked him to be on the song. He is in the video too
@@DouglasDorner-I812 they collaborated with a lot of guys, I'd say his work on this track makes him an honorary Beastie at the very least
Can't forget Public Enemy with Anthrax
This comment covered everything I was going to say, nearly verbatim.
I was going to tell them they should check out Three MC’s and One DJ, and then direct them to a video where they ARE the band of musicians.
Okay your surprise at this sound makes me think you’ve never heard their classic song “Fight For Your Right (To Party)”. Oh my gosh you HAVE to! It was what we first heard from them and the mixture of rock and rap was so shocking back then. You couldn’t help but love it. You gotta do that one (and watch the video, too!).
With out a doubt the worst song they recorded. They were so put off by it that they never played it again after about 1988. They have so much more depth than that song. I sugget you watch the video for Fight for You Right Revisited full length about 20 minutes. It picks up where fight for you right ended with them leaving the party. There are at least 30 well known actors in it.
That song is bullshit. The Beastie Boys themselves hated that shit
@@drewfierros1596 So I hear. Sucks because it was such a fun part of my childhood.
In high school brass monkey and fight for your right to party were some of our favorite jams.
@@anthonyv6962 wow, never knew that, that was one of my and friends favorite.
This is why Beastie boys were so awesome. They weren't afraid to incorporate other genres in their music!
ruclips.net/video/tUwgsCQTIQ0/видео.html
Rick Rubin did it!
Beastie Boys have sold 20 million records in the United States and had seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004. They are the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991.
You absolutely have to hear “Epic” by Faith No More. It is the quintessential “rap rock” song from the late 80s/1990.
About time someone said it
"Falling To Pieces" is also a great Faith No More song.
Saw these guys in Indianapolis in 92.
They opened for GnR/ Metallica.
9 hour concert lol
I’ve requested Epic by Faith No More at least 100 times! Great song, great band! “Falling To Pieces” is great as well.
Zombie Eaters!!! They'd also love their cover of Easy.
“Sabotage” is a banger…. Not quite as much rock as this, but still great!
Yes please I've been asking them to do this one for a while now lol😜
I suggest "Sabotage" when they played Letterman instead of the video.
You have to listen to Sabotage by Beastie Boys. But do the live, Letterman one. It really shows how talented these guys are, and is real high energy raw, dirty rock /rap. It gives me goosebumps every time.
That is pretty cool. They were on that show several times over the years.
I love the original video though. "Serpico" vibe, but funny.
Looks like they had a lot of fun making that video.
Watch the video. Then watch the live and you’ll appreciate it more.
My fav too. The video was so freeking funny.
That's got the coolest music video
I have to say Amber after watching your channel for so long & how much you mention your parents & the music they listened to, they sound awesome!!! You definitely got a taste of our music at an early age. ❤️
Right, we would love to see Her parents! ;)
Amber, if your parents would holler “No… Sleep… Till Brooklyn” when you were growing up, you have to show them on the channel sometime!
At least her mother (her father passed 😥)
her dad has passed 😢💔
Sad
At least picture of them when they were young couple ☺️👍
Sadly her Dad passed away. But to listen to her talk about him, he was Def a fun guy! Would have loved to meet him!
On this song, Kerry King from Slayer is playing guitar. On some later albums they would play their own instruments,Adrock on guitar, MCA on bass, and Mike D in drums, and they’d also have a DJ on the turntable, I know Mixmaster Mike was with them for a bit, but there have been several if you want to see them play check out a live performance of Sabotage
Yes! Was scrolling through to see if anyone credited Kerry
At the time Slayer shared both record labels with the Beastie Boys, (Def Jam Records) as well as producers (Rick Rubin). Anthrax also wrote a rap/rock song that was originally supposed to have the Beastie Boys rapping on it, but they could never get their schedules worked out and Anthrax ended up rapping as well. It is called “I’m The Man”
I never knew that was King from Slayer. Cool
In the beginning of the Beastie Boys Career they originally were a punk band. They did actually play their own instruments on all of their albums. Every album was different. Kerry King of Slayer was the shredder of the guitar on this track and if I'm not mistaken he also did Fight for your right. Slayer and Beastie Boys shared a label and both were produced at the time by Rick Ruben. Slayer was in the same studio recording Reign in Blood which became one of the shortest and fastest thrash metal albums of all time. Anthrax and Public Enemy collaborated on the song Bring the Noise and I'm the Man. RUN DMC and Aerosmith did Walk this way. This was the middle 80's. I'm glad to have been a kid growing up to all of this . Boombox and everything.
Hole lee crap. Hearing it now... totally Kerry!
Beastie Boys actually started out as a hardcore punk band, so a lot of their early material has a lot of rock instrumentation. They also all play their own instruments and rarely use samples.
They literally sample all the time, and rarely play instruments SMFH
They do sample. You should listen to Paul's boutique, full of samples but they do play the instruments in their songs, Ad-Rock is the guitar player in this song
@@homersimpson2159 I think he means when you do hear instruments, it's usually the Beatie Boys playing the instruments, not sampled. As in, they play their own stuff.
@@Xanatros Which is incorrect
@@homersimpson2159 sure it is buddy. I can already tell if I said the sky was blue you would tell me I was wrong. Have a nice life.
My favorite line, "ain't seen the light since we started this band, MCA get on the mic, my man!"
The Beastie Boys started out as a punk band. They changed to rap around three years later. In the 90s, they started rapping and playing their instruments. A lot of the rock-sounding 80s songs contain samples from classic hard rock songs. Kerry King, guitarist for the heavy metal band Slayer, played the guitar and the solos on this song. The Beastie Boys' producer for the License to Ill album, Rick Rubin, was also the producer for a lot of heavy metal bands, as well as another rap group, Run DMC. In the 90s, he started producing Red Hot Chili Peppers albums.
They started rapping in the early 80s not the 90s.
@@ursulabklyn_mia6148 I meant rapping to the instruments that they were playing themselves.
I thought Kerry King played on "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)".
@@RayfordRaySiegel Kerry King (of Slayer) does both songs. Def Jam label mates.
@@ronpotts6385 Their Punk Band "The Young Aborigines" was in 1978. In November 1982, Beastie Boys recorded the 7-inch EP Polly Wog Stew. Their first Studio Album was the one that this song is off of. Licensed To Ill in 1986. You got your years mixed up.
"Intergalactic" and "Sabotage" are great songs from them!! I don't know if you guys have done their first big hit "Fight For Your Right To Party" but it's a great classic that people still play at parties. All the ones that I mentioned are even better with the Music Videos..
True
"Intergalactic" and "Sabotage" for sure my top two Beastie Boy tracs
Hi guys, love the channel! This link is a Beastie Boys live performance of Sabotage on David Letterman in '94. They are playing their instruments, along with their awesome DJ and a couple extra band members. I have a feeling you will love this. Enjoy!!

Are you guys kidding me? You actually like this superficial noise? Are you all,the ones that have been making these kind of worthless reaction requests to this channel lately? So much more great classic rock to get requests on than this junk.
@@kenanthony1202 Just as you are entitled to what you like others are entitled to what they like.. That's just the way the world works..
Rhymin & Stealin, She's Crafty, Posse in Effect, The New Style, Slow and Low...basically the whole album is absolutely fantastic!
Beastie Boys used to be Punk Rockers... And yes... They do play their own instruments.
On later albums, the Beastie Boys played their instruments more but on this first album a lot of it came from Rick Rubin sampling classic rock. For instance, the Beastie's song "Rhymin' & Stealin'" samples the drums from Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," the guitar riff from Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf," and a little bit of the Clash's cover of "I Fought The Law." On "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn," you're hearing Kerry King (from Slayer) playing Angus Young's riff from AC/DC's "T.N.T." On "She's Crafty," they sampled Jimmy Page's guitar riff from Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean." In "Time To Get Ill," there's a bit of Led Zep's "Custard Pie." Elsewhere on the album, you get snippets from CCR, the theme from the TV show "Mr. Ed," and plenty of others.
Rick Rubin, btw, is also the same producer who brought Aerosmith and Run DMC together for "Walk This Way." In a lot of ways, Rick Rubin was the guy who helped rap cross over into the mainstream and brought black and white audiences together in a way that you didn't see a lot of at the time.
That’s not the TNT riff. Kinda similar but not the same
@@SdMbL1 Kerry King himself said years ago that Rick Rubin wanted something that sounded like "TNT" for this song so King just downtuned and did a variation on it.
Appreciate the education. Thank you
Yes, Rick Rubin deserves a lot of credit for fusing different sounds, genres and molding absolute bangers in all his work!🤙🔥
Rick Rubin is a hip hop god.
The "Fight for Your Right" video is hilarious, so much funny, and "Sabotage" is iconic!
The boys hated fight for your right. They said it pulled in the wrong type of ppl to like their shows. They wanted hardcore rap and end up with frat boys.
30 years and 100s of songs and Fight for Your Right to Party, while popular, is like, their in their bottom 10. Glad it got them on the map so they could really get into the cool stuff they did.
And I don't recommend Sabatoge for an intro to Beasties. It's better after knowing then a bit.
Fight for your right and twisted sisters we're not gonna take it. Probably funnest videos ever other than weird Al videos.
This was the first rap song I ever heard. I was like 8 years old and now, 35 years later, I'm still hooked.
I was a die-hard metalhead when I was in my late teens in the early/mid '90s and I was pretty narrow minded about music back then. I remember the first time I heard Sabotage by the Beastie Boys in my local rock club. The whole club erupted into this huge mosh pit and it was amazing! That tune busted my ideas about music wide open.
Fight for your right, she‘s on it, sabotage , gratitude. The Beastie Boys played the instruments. In this Song the Guitar is played by Kerry King of Slayer.
No way! I learned something today! Guitarist from Slayer?
I think Kerry laid down a lot of the guitar work on this album
You're still missing the best Beastie Boys songs....3 MC's and 1 DJ, Sure Shot and What'cha Want. Come on guys. You'll dig these three.
"Hey Ladies" dude!!!! Thats Beastie Boys peaking
I hate that people think this album is the best of the Beastie Boys when they have 3 classics from the 90s. Check Your Head? Come on man. Ill Communication? Pfff.
Born in 74, i grew up in the eighties, great memories. Classic !
Me too :)
Beastie Boys were formed out of members of experimental hardcore punk band The Young Aborigines in 1978, with Diamond as vocalist, Jeremy Shatan on bass guitar, John Berry on guitar, and Kate Schellenbach on drums.[3] When Shatan left in 1981, Yauch replaced him on bass and the band changed their name to Beastie Boys. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz.
After achieving local success with the 1983 comedy hip hop single "Cooky Puss," Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album, Licensed to Ill (1986)
Intergalactic is a must! I was in high school when this album dropped...changed everything.
I’m telling you. Three MCs and One DJ. Do the official video. You’ll LOVE it!
Mix Master Mike!
Yes, it's a must!
never heard this one.. bout to check it.. I know, I am late. thanks anyway.
Actually so true!! ❤😊😂🎉🎉🎶💙🤟
I was a rock guy growing up and this song got me listening to the Beastie Boys and I was hooked. Loved the whole album.
Their whole first album, just like Run DMC was full of sampled classic rock beats and riffs. Familiarity to the fans was crucial in getting rap music started in the 80s. As Chuck D said, "RUN DMC brought rap from the street corners to the edge of the boroughs in NY, the Beastie boys took it right down the main street America. The FIRST PLATINUM SELLING RAP ALBUM, the BIGGEST SELLING RAP ALBUM EVER! and a career that lasted from 1978 (The young and the useless and the Beastie boys bands united) until 2012.
Yes, the Beastie Boys had many songs with a heavy rock sound. Some others worth checking out are: She's Crafty, Fight For Your Right, Sabotage, Rhymin' And Stealin', and She's On It.
Yeah!!! 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Right there with you ✌️

When the Beastie Boys started out in the early 80s in New York City they were actually a punk band. Obviously, hiphop was born in New York around the same time and they started getting into it. Towards the mid-80s they started moving towards hiphop. When they started playing shows around 1984 they hired a DJ named Rick Rubin…who got into producing and is now a legendary music producer. Rubin and Russell Simmons, both NYU students, started Def Jam Records from their dorm rooms. Rubin approached them about producing the Beasties for his new record label and the rest is kind of history. Another band that was signed to the Def Jam label was Slayer, and their guitarist Kerry King is the one playing guitar on this song. The Beastie Boys started in punk playing instruments, but by this point were only MC’ing. Shred guitar like that wasn’t their wheelhouse anyhow. About 5 years later, the Beasties would once again pick up their instruments and start playing their own music.
New York in the 80's was the epitome of that city. During that time Times Square was a shady place with hookers, rip-off pawn shops and street hustlers. Gotti was still running the streets and the art scene was crazy.
NY has been whitewashed and not as exciting since then...sigh.
Haha would love to see Amber’s reaction to Slayer 😂
@@ericcohen4613I don’t think she’s ready for that yet
I'm class of 88.
I have pics of my Senior Prom and it's me with long flowing hair while wearing a gray and pink tux.
Every Beastie boys song is nothing but raw energy. 🤣
I’m sure you’ve heard their song, “Sabotage”, before. But I encourage you to do a reaction to the 1994 David Letterman performance. It’s a great look at them playing at their instruments, and on a classic tune. Some like their MTV performance of the song better, but I think the Letterman show is a more classic visual. The camerawork (and lighting) on each member is also much better on the Letterman performance. And for what it’s worth, I think the performance itself is slightly better. Anyways, there’s a version posted by Porkys1982 which should suffice.
Also, technically the band started out as a punk band. Then they moved into more of a rap/rock sound with the release of this album. Paul’s Boutique was the next album, and that stands as one of the most sample-heavy albums of all time. There’s a 40+ minute video on RUclips where they play all the samples on Paul’s Boutique, and then compare them to the original versions, it’s great. Check Your Head (1992) and Ill Communication (1994) were more hip-hop/sample/rock heavy, with a hint of the synth-style of their future release. The In Sounds From Way Out (1996) is a compilation of instrumentals taken mostly from their previous albums. It’s well worth checking out. Eventually they moved into more synth-based music with Hello Nasty (1998).
Totally agree. Letterman performance was killer.
Aerosmith and RunDMC doing Walk This Way would fit perfectly in tonight's 80s theme.
YES!! Such a great 80s mash up banger!
Was thinking and was just about to say the same thing....
You beat me to it!
The Beastie Boys actually started as a punk band so yeah, they all know how to play all their own instruments.
Beastie Boys started off as rock. They also play guitar and drums. They are WAY more talented than many know.
The BB songs "Sabotage" and "Intergalactic" are bangers also.
Kerry King of the metal band Slayer played the heavy guitar riffs here (borrowed from AC/DC) but the Beasties themselves were also musicians who originally were a hard rock/metal band. They often played instruments on stage during live gigs.
They were originally punk rock
Hey I graduated in 1985 and myself and my friends played in a softball tourney as a fun time before we all split up. We came in 2nd which qualified us to go to a Worlds tourney in Minnesota. We came in 4th in the worlds tourney , getting to the point, but we were from Brook Park, heading home, partying in a RV, singing along with “ No Sleep til Brooklyn” But singing .... til Brook Park”.
Sabotage is a super HARD beat drop. Love that song and would love to watch your reactions
The Beastie Boys became superstars on this album and especially because of "You Gotta Fight for your Right to Party" which also incorporates rock. So when I got this tape I was not surprised by this song. You need to react to "Sabotage"music video. It is a very cool video and a homage to the 70's/80's. I will not give it away more than that.
Another later gem from the Beastie Boys is "So Whatcha Want?" I love the Beastie Boys best when they incorporate rock in their hip hop.
They were a rock band who incorporated rap. Don't believe me? Check out their history on Wikipedia...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beastie_Boys
I know it seems like I'm mincing words but I think it's important to get it in the right order so as to honor their legacy properly.
If you define Hip-Hop as Rap infused with rock, soul and/or other musical genres, The Beastie Boys were one of the very first Hip-Hop artists.
We all loved the Beasties, guys. They were a bridge from rock to hip hop/rap. Run DMC’s song together w/and covering Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” did it too. And DMC & Beastie Boys toured together. Loved y’all’s reaction, as usual😘
Public enemy and Anthrax did " Bring the noise" that's rap and metal......

"Fight for your right to party"is the best they ever did to me
The idea of rap and rock makes me wish you guys would check out “I’m The Man” by Anthrax. Full on metal band that decided to take up the “rap and metal can’t mix” challenge with an awesome song as the result. And of course then make your way to their team up with Public Enemy for “Bring The Noise”. 👍🏻

Fight for your right (to party) is another awesome rock anthem
The guitarist on this album is also the guitarist for metal band Slayer. The two groups had the same producer, Rick Rubin of Def Jam, he rented the recording studio and laid down both this, the Beastie Boys' premier album, and Slayer's first gold album, Reign in Blood.
The melody was actually written by Jeff Hanneman but recorded by Kerry King

Total parody on Big hair rock n' roll. Outstanding!
YOU STILL NEED TO WATCH / LISTEN TO “WALK THIS WAY” by Aerosmith ft. Run DMC. This is the song, in 1986, which mainstreamed rap. It dropped in 1986 and it is hard rock with rap.
I wouldn't classify Aerosmith as "hard" rock. Lol
Beatie boys are an OG rap group, like Run DMC and Public Enemy, they had the talent to pull of epic stage shows. I couldn't even imagine why anyone would go see a live rap show these days, the new generation is nothing without all of their studio tools.
They are an O.G. Punk group that turned rap.

I might be late to the party, but the Members of the band, MCA, mike d, and ad rock, played the instruments on most of their songs where they did not use sample. They were actually in the punk rock scene before they fell into the hip hop scene at local ney york joints. So they were well versed on the instruments to make their own backing tracks. Another fun fact, the Beastie Boys are the reason why we have the limits on sample usage today before you have to pay rights to the original creator. Their album Paul's Boutique is like 90% samples and is the last album able to be produced that way.
"(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)"
Kerry King from the group Slayer did the guitar riffs in this song, producer Rick Rubin was working with both groups at the time and this is a heavy metal spoof song and he wanted somebody to shred up the guitar
Check out - ‘Car Thief’ from their second album, it’s one of the hardest beats ever, or ‘Shake Your Rump’ … really the whole Paul’s Boutique album is golden
Ryan is right. Paul's Boutique is an absolute masterpiece
They do all their own instruments,, seen them live several times.. one of the most incredible sounds I have heard was mca getting down on 1 knee playing the base cello at the garden ,, the speakers were approximately 1 story high and the sound in the garden echoes around prohetically ... cool experience and proud to have grown up with them ❤❤❤
It's 3/24/2022, I'm 48 years old, I grew up through the late 70s, all of the 80s & 90s, and still love this song!!
Beasties started out as a punk band that started touring with the likes of Run DMC. They incorporated rap into their music and became legends in the genre. Other rock type songs you can do are Sabotage (which has an amazing video), and Whatchu Want.
Other early rock-rap groups included House of Pain, Rage Against the Machine, Black Sheep, and Ice T.
I believe there were 5 members when they started out as a punk band. One was a female member
hell yeah exactly
For their heavy metal cred, check out Rhymin' And Stealin' - It uses Led Zeppelin's drum beat from When The Levee Breaks & loops Black Sabbath's riff from Sweet Leaf.
"Managers crazy, he always smokes dust..." they're talking about Russell Simmons there. Yes, that Russell Simmons.
And the Beasties started out as a hard-core punk band.
Didn't catch on? This album and it's tracks were EVERYWHERE in '87, radio, MTV, boomboxes on the street. Everywhere. It's the Run-D.M.C. Rockbox formula but over an AC/DC style hook instead of something more like Prince
Man, this and "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol blaring at parties back in the day. Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, ZZ Top...the music and the vibe at the time were just so perfect.
Not just that, but you could mix in other artists at the time, get a complete different vibe and it was still part of the 80's feel
(Like Cindy Lauper, Culture Club, Madonna).
Then you could hit up Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee and The Fat Boys and get yet another sound that was STILL 80's.
Mix these and every other combo I've failed to mention and it's suddenly clear how an era was magic.
I like Billy Idol's version, but Mony Mony will always be a Tommy James and the Shondells song to me.
Mony Mony at all the parties and clubs back on the day. Billy Idol ❤
Beastie Boys pumped out bangers for three decades. So far you keep revisiting their first album. Move up to "So Whatchya Want?," "Sure Shot," "Sabotage," "Intergalactic," etc. Also, that solo on "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" was by Slayer's Kerry King.
Yes, because License to Ill was a great album cover to cover. Let them explore it all, then move on. :)
I was a sophomore in high school when this album came out. I grew up in a small beach town in Massachusetts. We had 400 kids in the school and I was 1 of 4 kids who listened to rap. I’d like to think we were ahead of the curve.
Around the 4:10 mark, he says that he's surprised this song didn't catch on. Haha. License to ill was the first rap album to ever hit #1 on the charts, and This song and the album it's from comer has gone on to become anthemic. this was played and sung along with at many parties across the world for decades! A classic
This is EARLY Beasties.
They are great live. Saw them in Detroit in 85 opening for Madonna!
It's not even early Beasties, they were a punk band before. Sounded just like The Germs.
With the 6 foot.........member😂
Run DMC and The Beastie Boys pioneered the Rap genre in the 80s. In fact, when the Run DMC album was popular, I tried looking for it in the record stores, and never could find it because there wasn't a Rap/Hip-Hop section yet. The genre was so new that record stores had yet to differentiate Rap from pop and rock/Metal. But regarding The Beastie Boys, they debuted this album "Licensed to Ill" in 1986 and it was literally the sound track to my Junior High years. We played the piss out of this album just about everywhere we went. And by we, I mean my Fellow schoolmates. The fusion of Rock, actually Punk Rock, with Rap was crazy and it worked. So much so that Anthrax collabed with Public Enemy in 1987 to do the song "I am the Man" and it too was wild. Check that song out on YT as well.
@David I was in HS at the time myself and definitely agree with you about L2I being on the soundtrack of my youth as well.
Yep. Several years ago there was a miniseries on the 1980's and they covered Run DMC as pioneers of rap and completely glossed over Beastie Boys.
Don’t you just miss actually going to a record store and thumbing through all the albums, checking cover art, looking for that ace in the hole, discovering new bands and sounds? My friends and I would take weekly treks to Tower Records and spend hours flipping through LPs, walking out with 2 or 3 LPs for like $20! Miss those days! 🤙
Slight correction. Anthrax's collaboration with Public Enemy was Bring Tha Noise but I'm The Man rules
@@dustywaynemusic6297 oh that's right...you're right...I stand corrected. Been a while since I've seen that album. Used to have it on cassette pre-2000. Stopped collecting Anthrax after "Volume 8" I think.
The Beastie Boys started as a up and coming punk band with a big following and gave it up for rap in 1984 after releasing THE song COOKIEPUSS on vinyl which got tons of college radio play and night club banger
you also have to realize that the Beastie Boys gave LL Cool J's demo tape to Rick Ruben (their producer) and basically helped him get produced and out to the world.
the were epic for hip hop , rap , and all of us who heard them as a punk band while skating and following them into hip hop...
they DO play their instruments!! 🥰 BUT the solo, I just read, is the guitarist from metal band, Slayer.
Next Beastie Boys... “Sabotage”
If you react to Sabotage you HAVE to watch the official video!!!!!
As someone who was a teenager in the 80s let me just say it was the best. Sportscenter, Espn, MTV, not to mention the greatest music and videos. Everything was new.
Yes he did.
Fight for your right has this vibe, Brass Monkey is still my favorite
3 MC's and 1 DJ, is typically quite the favorite.
Beastie Boys were at first a punk band. Then they took their queues from Run DMC and Slick Rick. Then when Nirvana hit, they went to a fuller sound with Sabotage, etc.
I was 6 yrs old to 16 thru the 80's...
In Los Angeles as a metalhead skater kid. It Rocked harder than words can do justice. 🤘❤
You really need to watch the videos with Beastie Boys. Their sense of humour and energy just adds to how great their music is.
When they played live, they would rap with just their mics and then they would pick up their instruments and play while singing/rapping. They were truly an amazing, genre busting group.
At least for this song they had Kerry King from Slayer on guitar.
RIP MCA.
This is the product of DefJam cofounder Rick Rubin. In the mid 80s, the music that scared parents the most was rap and metal. Rick had the Beastie Boys and Slayer signed, so he had the vision to combine the genres.
The Beastie boys are beyond rap and rock, very important band!
I was 12 when this album came out. I'm 47 now, and I was STILL headbanging to the song while I watched your video!
I was in the 7th grade at Advent Lutheran Middle School in Boca Raton, FL, when I first heard this album. Small school, with about 30 kids per grade. And ALL of us white Christian kids went absolutely crazy for the Beastie Boys! This was at the beginning of MTV, and we all screamed, "You gotta fight....for your right....to PARTY!" along with the Beastie Boys when they came on. A few of us lip-synced "Brass Monkey" for that year's talent show, not having any clue in the world what the lyrics actually meant, and the principal immediately stood up afterwards and apologized to all the parents in the audience. LOL!
These three Jewish boys from Brooklyn led us into a whole new world, like Run-DMC, NWA, and any other rap albums we could find in our local suburban record store.
For rebellious pre-teens in middle-class predominantly-white neighborhoods in the 80's, the Beastie Boys were our gateway drug to music our parents, born in the late 40's, had no clue about. We really didn't know what we were rebelling against, but we knew we liked the feeling of rebelling.
Throw in Montley Crue, Twisted Sister, Metallica, Madonna, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Poison, Scorpion, Guns N' Roses, The Cure, Boy George......well, you can see how, in the 80's, our parents, who grew up on the Beatles and Elvis, thought we had thought our minds! LOL! But to their credit, they let us listen to whatever we wanted and only bothered us when the music emanating from our rooms got a bit too loud.
I was a high school DJ during that time, and we were hired by my old, Catholic elementary school to play at an 8th grade dance. I only had the dirty versions of the Beastie Boys songs, and I threw one on. Teachers and nuns in attendance and they were rockin' too. Then the line came up that said the D-word. DOH!!! I was surprised they didn't stop the party, and surprisingly enough they had me do another party after that. ;)
Fight for your right. Perhaps the most iconic of all beasty boys teacks.
Rick Rubin helped create the Def Jam label with Russell Simmons from his college dorm in NYC. The first acts they signed were L.L. Cool J, Run-DMC, EPMD, Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy. Any one of those deserve a listen. All from NY: Queens County, Brooklyn, & Long Island.
Now we're talkin' Rob Squad!!! BEASTIE BOYS!!!! Listened soooo much to my "License to Ill" tape back in the day, it BUSTED!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Now if Rob Squad does RUN DMCs "Its Tricky" or "Mary Mary".... OMG!!!!!😎😎😎😎
