    I've never heard of hip hop/rap being called "fusion". I usually hear fusion as referring to a type of jazz (usually mixed with rock music or funk), which was mainly popular in the 1970s.

    • @paranoidrodent
      @paranoidrodent 2 года назад +6

      I think fusion is being used in the looser sense, to simply describe a song that meshes two genres together. Fusion jazz is more of a coherent concept and subgenre of jazz. Of course, back in the 80s, this was generally just viewed as a rap song. I certainly considered it rap during my teens. It is only with hindsight that the punk elements are obvious to me.
      Guitars in popular rap weren't weird at the time. The definition of rap was looser then, with almost any rebellious-sounding spoken word with a strong beat pretty much just being lumped in at the time.

    • @Musicvegan01
      @Musicvegan01 2 года назад +3

      @@paranoidrodent The very early rap records were mostly based on funk, R&B, and disco music. A lot of those songs were long and were only released on 12" maxi singles. "Rappers Delight" & "Adventures Of Super Rhyme" were around 15 minutes each, which was the also the case with some disco songs. A few years later is when hip hop started to get different sounds. It was Run DMC who had a more rock sound with "Rock Box" on their first album. I think that's why they got on MTV, when the hip hop acts before them didn't.

      I've heard it from the very start. It was notorious for "fusing" with literally everything, that's what made it interesting. There wasn't any kind of specific sound that it had to follow. At the very start there wasn't very many live hip hop bands, so it was all samples fused into hip hop in some way, the 70's, 80's and 90's were insanely experimental.

    You might find it interesting to know the guitar solos for this song, and "Fight for Your Right to Party" were both done by Kerry King of Slayer (the guitarist with the nails in his leather armbands). I agree. The solos in both songs are atrocious! I love me some Slayer, but Jeff's solos were much better than Kerry's. This album came out when I was like 14. I loved every song, but this was my favorite song on the album.

    Years ago in high school days, I was skateboarding with a close friend of mine. I had one of those little mini-dollar store radios, the ones that pretty much fit in your palm. It was the end of the hot humid detroit summer day and we decided to go back home after skating for hours. I turned the radio on and there was silence for a few seconds on the radio. no joke the beginning of the song kicked in with that heavy guitar and we just looked at each other without even saying a word. We both knew what was up!

    Kerry King from Slayer was asked by Rick Rubin to play the guitar parts for the album. Both bands were in the same studio, using the same producer and on the same label at that time.

    They were a punk rock group as well. They play a wide variety of music. Alt rock, punk, rap, rap/rock. Yes, Lex this is rap/rock. Which was common back then. '80s and '90s. Lot of old rap songs had disco, funk rock, jazz and rock, metal samples as well. Especially under Rick Ruben's record label. He was a fan of both rap and rock, metal, punk. Lot of the artists under the Def Jam record label collaborated with each other. Slayer with Beastie Boys here for example is one of them. . BTW, you are right. the solos was messy. Lot of Slayer solos are messy, not very good lol.
    Ruben had rappers like LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, etc. Punk groups like Fugazi, Butthole Surfers, Husker Du, Minor Threat, etc, metal like Danzig, Slayer, etc. Alt rock like RHCP, The Jesus and Mary Chain, etc. Even come country music Johnny Cash, Dixie Chicks, etc.
    It was a mixture of genres in the record label. So a lot of mixing of musics.
    Als, nu-metal became popular during the '90s/'00s. Metal/punk, rap mix.

    They are so legit legends and real talents, they are getting more recognition these days with reactions bringing back the past but the phases and path they forged is really amazing. I got to see them live at the Santa Barbara bowl and it was stunning how they never missed a beat, never stepped on each other and then busted out a vibe playing their instruments....RIP MCA that bass he smacked was always sick! Consider doing GRATITUDE official video - it's them on instruments honoring Pink Floyd Echo's from Pompeii.... They did it all

    I had this cassette in the 80's when we carried the boom boxes while riding our bicycles. I liked No Sleep Til Brooklyn, Slow & Low & Rhyming & Stealing best. I didn't like Paul Revere or Fight for Your Right (To Party) but a lot of people did. Brass Monkey was the one where we had people coming out of their houses to sing the line "Brass Monkey, that funky monkey."
