    The whole "Licensed to Ill" album is awesome! The guitar solo here and in "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn" were done by Kerry King of Slayer. Slayer was recording "Reign in Blood" the same time the Beastie Boys were recording "Licensed to Ill" and had the same producer, Rick Rubin. Kerry did the solos for very little cash. Kerry makes appearances in videos for these songs, if I remember correctly.

      In 1986, producer Rick Rubin was working w/ both Slayer and Beastie Boys... Kerry King agreed to appear on the 'Licensed to ill' playing the solos on 2 tracks. He appeared on the video for 'No sleep til Brooklyn' (King claimed they wanted the gorilla to knock him off the stage... he said, "If anyone's knocking anyone off the stage, it'll be me knocking off the gorilla." So that's what they did! 😂)

    Beastie Boys are Hip Hop royalty, even credited with discovering LL Cool J, but they started as a punk band and had rock hits. They were even the first rappers who used samples of other people music, which led to lawsuits and the modern way of getting clearance for music samples. They were just three goofy, talented dudes, who liked all kinds of music. Their catalog is very diverse.

    • @anthonyv6962
      @anthonyv6962 2 года назад +10

      Even wrote the beat for LL's first record "I Need a Beat" well Adrock did. However they were not sued for sampling or even near the first to use them. Biz Marke was the first to be hit hard with a lawsuit for his "Just a Friend" record. Funny thing is before being famous the Beasties sued British Airways for using a "sample" of the B side of Cookie Puss, "Beastie Revolution."

    You guys have done 2 Beastie Boys songs and, while they're the two most popular, they're also two of the most atypical. The funny thing about this song is that it was intended to be mocking frat bros and "party boys", but people took it at face level and it became an anthem for those very same people.
    The Beastie Boys are an incredibly diverse band but, considering they actually started as a punk band, don't go rock all that often. Funk is more their wheelhouse, although they fuse a *lot* of different styles together. For something very different to anything you've heard so far, check out "Shake Your Rump". Just one suggestion out of a possible many, because you've barely scratched the surface.

    First, let me say that I love you both, I have watched most of your reactions. You both are so different from each other. Brad, you are the more serious type, and Lex don’t have a serious bone in her body, at least musically. Don’t ever change, both of you rock!!

    Beastie Boys first tour was with Madonna of all people, and their first international tour was with Run DMC.
    The first record was kinda lame lookin back, lots of juvenile humour, and simplistic ideas, but then they were basically still just kids. They'd broken out with a comedy song, and the label wanted more.
    From the second record on is where they started to become artists. Yes, Hey Ladies the biggest single was still a bit juvenile in theme (that said, Girls from the debut is still one of my favourite songs!), but the delivery and sonics of it was vastly improved.

    I'll always associate this song with a recording me and my sister did (that I still have) when we were kids when this song was huge, singing to the song, making each other laugh and barely able to get through it, with my mom towards the end of the song coming in unannounced to tell my sister that she wasn't doing something she was supposed to, causing it to just all fall apart. XD

    Beasties was 1 of the first to do "ROP"! Lol! Side note, they were originally a punk rock band, but got into hip hop! (Best of my memory) they hung out in Rick Ruban's ( co-founder of def jam records) dorm room at NYC, and listen to a demo sent to him by L.L. Cool J. So, in a sense, they discovered him! And helped make a lot of the beats for a lot of the artist at that time.

    Fun facts: the Boys' original DJ was Rick Rubin, who went on to cofound Def Jam Records and produced records/singles by Run DMC, Public Enemy, Jay-Z, Slayer, U2, Johnny Cash, Linkin Park and many others.
    They got their break opening for Public Image Ltd, fronted by form Sex Pistol singer John Lydon, and toured with Madonna on her Like a Virgin tour. They also were support acts for various punk bands in their early days such as The Misfits, Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains.

    Beastie Boys were a rap-group but this song was written as a rock-parody. They were making fun of all those '80s, long-haired, up all night and party every day, rock bands. Unfortunately, most people didn't get this song was supposed to be a joke. The band became disappointed when the same people they were making fun of started banging their head to this song, too. The Beastie Boys even stopped playing it live because they didn't really want those type of people at their shows, and those kinds at attitudes talked about in the song being reinforced.
