Just coming here to say that, especially with this song. Their lyrics alone represent only a small part of their overall personality, which comes across well in the way the song was sped up during lipsynch playback, so when the video was slowed down to normal speed, they were jumping around in slow motion.

  • @paulb4604

One thing I think the Beasties don't get nearly enough credit for is how complex their lyrics are. Their rhymes are so intertwined and they play off each other so well. True geniuses.

I absolutely agree however IMO the use of the distortion on this entire album made them hard to understand and differentiate who was rapping. You have to remember that when this came out there was either no internet or the internet was in its infancy. So we had to rewind and playback alot to understand what they were saying. Or if you were lucky the lyrics were in the tape case or CD. I also put Rage into this category as well. Some of the greatest lyrics that were made inaudible because of the background or effects.

One of my fave songs from one of my fave groups of all time! Takes me back to high school in the early 90s, blasting this CD in my car, and rapping along, of course-not caring who saw me.) ♥️
Only got to see them once live, at Lollapalooza ‘94, but at least I got to see them-unlike other favorite groups who had a member die before I could see them live. (Like INXS with Michael Hutchence; I saw them in ‘06, with JD Fortune singing, and they were still amazing).
Dude- The Beastie Boys live were awesome. The people who actually had seats were standing in them most of the time The Beasties were on the stage, especially for songs like this, and of course “Sabotage.’ They were on fire on that stage!🔥

I hope you guys do more Beastie, they are so fun! Some people say they are true MCs as opposed to just rappers, because for Beastie it really is all about the fun and the party and making the crowd laugh and dance and have a good time. They've got clever and funny bars, but on top of that, the voices and attitude and playfulness they use when delivering the lines puts a fun and unique spin on it. Plus nobody does the echoes/layers/turn-taking thing as well as the Beastie Boys. That's their whole trademark. Check Your Head would end up being the first and best hip-hop CD I ever owned, but I never got into them for that; I had no interest in rap, but my roommate had more eclectic tastes than I, and he turned me onto this CD, the year it came out -- what we both really dug, to the point where the rap element was in 2nd place, was the bass-heavy drives and grooves.

Definitely check out their live performance from Glasgow. It’s amazing. You see them play instruments and switch it up with rhyming to the beats laid out by Hurricane.

In my opinion.Beastie Boy’s and Run Dmc made hip hop relevant in the 1980’s.Yes, others too I’m not mentioning. They went to the masses though. One last thing. The Beastie Boys we’re so experimental in there music.Hip hop, alternative rock, and punk comes to mind.Legends of the music industry for sure.

Brad & Lex, great reaction, but honestly, you shoulda reacted to the music video, it's epic. I don't know why you (and most other reactors) don't have an advisor choose your videos for you. An advisor born in the '60s who has been a rock/pop/early rap aficionado their whole life, at least up through the '90s. You can still select the songs. But you would then submit the song titles to the advisor who would do a quick RUclips search and send you the best link to use for your reaction. In fact, the right person wouldn't even have to compare different videos for a song in most cases, they'd already know exactly which one you need to react to. Something for you two to consider--it would significantly enhance your channel.
*ps~Brad, if you insist on using lyric videos, find an advisor (or someone separately) who can edit and add the lyrics to the screen for you. You'd have to compensate them in some way (not necessarily $), as that's a good deal of work. But still, it wouldn't be that often, as most songs are fine to be reacted to using a simple lyric video of the studio version, that already exists on RUclips. It would be totally worth it.*
pps~I fit the advisor criteria, and I'm an editor who can add lyrics to any video. Now I don't know that I have the time to serve in that role long term, but I'd be willing to do it for a few weeks, to give you a chance to see if you like having such a service. No charge. If you're interested, reply here and I'll shoot you an email.
    Cheers.

They are reacting to lyric videos because the music videos were getting copyright strikes. It's just easier for them to pause the songs a bit (audio copyright doesn't seem to get hit if you at least pause it here and there) and not have the music videos so that doesn't happen as often. Also, they are doing this live most of the time. You'll see them on about 2 to 3 times a week and they take suggestions based off whatever they want to do that night (90s alt rock, 70s vinyl, etc.). So, I'm not sure an advisor would really work for them. But, that's just like my opinion, man.
