      The Beastie Boys were the group that transitioned rap from mostly an urban, minority fan base to the general public. Unfortunately a lot of white boys weren’t ready for it yet. I was one of them! Their first album came out when I was 24. Until about three years ago I had heard of them but that’s it. Now I’m so glad they got popular with YT reactors because it’s opened up their whole playlist to me.

      @@jacobsvensson8193 I disagree that Beastie Boys were a different scene than ATCQ and De La Soul. In 1996 ATCQ were huge, and they were opening act for Beastie Boys that year. The Beastie Boys were headlining arenas and Tribe opened for them. Q-Tip was rhyming on Beastie records, Beastie’s rhymed on a De La record. They were not at all different scenes than Tribe and De La. what you mean? When Beastie out on Tibetan Freedom concerts Tribe performed at them. Those groups were close. • @panrick
      @panrick 3 года назад +5

      @@jacobsvensson8193 I don't know man, if you grew up listening to hip hop in the 90s, saying you never heard any Beastie songs is like being a Rock'n'roll fan in the 1970s saying they never heard of Led Zeppelin. Or its the equivalent of saying you're a hip hop fan but you never heard a Tribe song. I'm not saying everybody was a fan of Beastie Boys but they were HUGE, literally everyone I knew listened to them, their music was played at every house party I went to. MTV played them all the time, they played all the biggest music festivals at the time. They were everywhere, and so was Tribe and De La, and Mobb Deep and Biggie and so on. It just seems weird to me to say you never listened to them. But I ain't judging you, we are all living different lives and on different paths. It's cool. it just blows my mind.

    In about 1983 they switched from punk to hip hop after meeting Rick Rubin and their sound, attitude and look was influenced heavily by Run DMC, rather than earlier groups that took influence from glam and disco, like Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash. Chuck D credits them with kick starting Public enemy’s career and LL Cool J, and Rakim have stated the Beasties were instrumental in solidifying Hip Hop as a genre. Eminem has said he wouldn’t be around without them and borrowed their License to Ill album cover for one of his records. Questlove has said that their instrument use directly influenced the Roots.
    They’ve been there since the beginning and they never tried to be “black”, they did their own thing in their own way but they’ve always stayed true to the core of what Hip Hop is.

      I've always had a special relationship with RUN DMC and Beastie Boys!
      We're all the same age and from NYC. I've been down with their music since 1983 to the present day. We share a lot in common because we're from the same generation.
      Both bands also toured with my frat bruthas FISHBONE! So this shit is deep!
      Beastie Boys are one of my all-time favorite hip-hop groups. They're possibly the funkiest white dudes in music history! PAUL'S BOUTIQUE is the serious joint!
      However, I have to strongly disagree with you about them not acting "Black"! They used to wear doo rags on their heads and Puma sweats, along with the Puma Clydes with the fat laces. It was Russell Simmons who told them that doing "Black Face" wasn't necessary for white rappers! Just be yourselves.
      And I agree that the Beastie Boys always kept it real and never embarrassed Black people by never imitating a jigaboo impersonation! They're great ambassadors of rap music!
      But, by being white rappers who were rhyming on the mic to funky music that was created by Black American people and their culture, they were already essentially acting like they were Black! They had to sound funky and carry a certain swagger like the Black rappers that inspired them and which they were emulating.

    Beastie Boys were there for the beginning of both hip hop and hardcore punk. They're literally OG's in two massively influential genres, as their earliest music was Lower East Side hardcore punk. They even named their group to have the same initials as Bad Brains, their idols. Bad Brains were a group of black Rasta dudes from DC that were basically the inventors of hardcore punk, and they also incorporated reggae into their sound early as well as heavy groove rock later in their tenure. Now there's a whole nother rabbit hole, digging into Bad Brains.

    Y’all gotta do this song. It was waxed in the 1990s but remastered in the 2000s. They use an animal call in the song and have a crazy intermission mid song that will knock off your socks. 😂 B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak (Remastered 2009)

      I’m 51, and remember buying License To Ill on cassette when I was 17. We wore out the tape jamming to it at work! I went from these guys straight to NWA, and Public Enemy. But, around 1987 I was introduced to the music of Sir Mix-a-Lot. The album Swass is pretty cool, specially the single Posse On Broadway.

    One thing you got to understand about the Beasties, they loved what they were doing and were always self depracating. Probably spelled that wrong, but they were always making fun of themselves in their videos.

They still play punk songs, they'll usually have one or two punk or rock songs on each album. PLEASE check out their punk cover of Sly and the Family Stone's song TIME FOR LIVIN, which is on the same album as SO WHATCHA WANT

    Shake Your Rump, not literally, unless you two want to 😊, ..Beastie Boys song that is sooooo under rated, it's off Paul's Boutique, it's a track that back in the day, really upped the bar for sampling, mixing in everyday sounds, and whole different tempos in one song.
