J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is the best-reviewed blockbuster of the year. When a ruthless mastermind known as Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) declares a one-man war on the Federation, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the daring crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will embark on the greatest manhunt in history. It will take all of their skills and teamwork to defend Earth and eliminate Khan’s threat in this “sleek, thrilling epic.” (Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly)

This movie is both underrated as its own thing, but also when coupled with the original. It was such a great way to give us something new, with the switch of Spock and Kirk's death.

It's a horrible ripoff of Wrath of Kahn. Worse yet the cast a pasty Brit to portray a Sikh. Finally, Kahn has _no_ motivation to behave in a deranged manner.

To answer your question in the beginning. Yes. He was supposed to let them die. Saving them will affect the evolution of that whole solar system. That species could become the one that wipes out another. Or maybe another species in the planet will now die because that species eats their food. You're not supposed to interfere until the species is capable of faster than light travel. Period.
However there are several Star Trek episodes that deal with how grandiose and nice that sounds, until you're at the other end of it. In Voyager there's an episode where they need the technology and have to swallow another species above them saying no. And they fail at accepting it. In DS9 there's even a famous quote that's "It's easy to be a saint in sanctuary", or "It's easy to be a saint in paradise". It's all pretty and tied in a bow for the Federation because they know they're not the ones who will need help.
It's a tenet of the prime directive that's always been debated on whether it's wrong or not.

13:56 Mark! 🖖 Something like an "Automatic Passive Defense System"? "Passive" because it is always in place, like a barbed wire fence. 🤔
Meanwhile, an electtric fence is active because it requires a power source that requires proactive maintenance by responsible caretakers.
Stuff that you mentioned before is also in the proactive side of things. People that are used to Peace at home, tend to have "token security" forces, if any
After seeing "Free Guy" I was eventually at my local branch of "FUB" and I asked people there about bothering to have an armed guard but then not allowing him to use his gun. Well, as of late, the trend has been not to escalate matters. They they pointed out that their bank doesn't even have a token security guard, armed or not! 😮

9:19 It's funny you should say that because in our human history, there's the advanced civilization called the Sumerians that popped up out of nowhere and their "Gods" are called the Annunaki (“those who from Heaven to Earth came”). They state that it was they who taught them everything that they knew. We know this from the thousands of Clay Tablets discovered at the site of Uruk, in southern Mesopotamia.

    1:03:06 Mark! 1.4K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️
Notes: Carol Marcus! She's a conundrum here. Okay, sure, this actress is better looking than her predessor, not just different looking. But I've forgotten if I did the age math or not. It doesn't help that this timeline is wonky! Part of it is accelerated, and part of it is behind!
By the time of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" their first 5-year voyage was way behind them! James' & Carol's son David, in retrospect seems to be about the age of James or Carol in this movie! 🤔
Carol isn't in the next movie so some have speculated that she's off ship raising David somewhere.
Peter Weller wasn't in the previous movie that has the robotic cop! 😅

So a bit of lore behind USS vengeance is that its among the most advance ship as it among the only ship to being able to fire during warp and was class as a dreadnought class which is heavy gunned, armored and less crew. Its like made for Espionage attacks or a group attack as it was very over gunned and overpowered like the Defiant but perfected.

Just a note Gene often picked names from myth to model alien items from. Like Rome and Romulus was modeled after Rome and that founding story. Klingons were cold war russian and china inspired. Kronos, the kingon moon has the same name of a Greek God who was imprisoned by His children including Zeus and Poseidon. He also drew from CS Forester and his friend Asimov. Read the Hornblower (CSF), Robot and Foundation(IA) novels. You will see much slipped into both Gene's works and Glen Larson's as well. I. Asimov was even a consultant on ST the Motion Picture.

I liked the movie but....1) the official high level fascination with Khan (and the rest of the super soldiers) is their usefulness militarily. But Khan's blood cures that little girl in the beginning, and basically resurrects Kirk. Aren't the medicinal effects of his blood more important than Khan's lethality as a soldier? 2) At the end, Spock mentions how no 5 year mission had ever been attempted before. Wouldn't such a mission, using so much valuable Federation resources, be planned a little more carefully than just handing Kirk the starship and crew and leaving it up to Kirk to just set course for anywhere he feels like at that moment?

Guys, I’m a huge fan but I need to say. Sometimes y’all get to talking so much, y’all miss plot points that explain things for later in the film. When Justin was asking why Khan’s ship was so strong against the Enterprise, it was clearly explained earlier in the film. Star Fleet is not the military, they solely have defensive weapons, that’s it. I know Justin knows this being a fan as much as he is. Maybe Justin’s just doing it for Jane’s benefit? Lastly, I was very surprised Justin didn’t pick up who Benedict’s character was until he revealed it. When I saw this in the theater, everyone knew from jump he was playing Khan. Anyways, so happy y’all enjoyed it. Take care.

It's never easy with the changing canon to give a definitve answer, but the short most general reply is: yes. It sounds inhuman, but it makes sense, and we can even use a local, more down to earth, point of view to see why that rule exists.
First, we need to recognize the universe is vast, cold and wild; disasters and other events don't happen for a given reason (to benefit or to punish) and are not good or bad in themselves (stars exploding spread the elements we know in different planets, giving some chance to the creation of new molecules and, maybe, life; but they can also fry and kill entire planets in one go).
Thus, saving an entire race it's human and good *from our very own and personal perspective*; but then we would be altering that environment with unforseen consequences. What if that volcano needed to erupt to prevent a worse disaster for the planet? What if this is the natural cycle of the planet: volcano explodes, kills everything, but life rebuilds stronger and better for its own benefit (and now, for saving a species, the entire natural cycle of the planet is wrecked)? What if this disaster was what life in this planet needed to evolve?
Of course, we can from if to if; but the principle of "don't get involved" exists in current preservation and investigation: if you try to save baby turtles by pulling them out of their nest into the water, you would probably kill them; while it's "human" to preven carnivore animals killing their prey, or parasites taking hold of a host it's the cycle of their environment; if we disrupt it with our human values and morality, we can cause the collapse of that ecosystem with our good intentions.
There are good arguments for and against to saving an entire planet (and rescuing Spock XD); but yeah... from a higher point of view, any time an "advanced" culture decides to "help" the "less" evolved ones things don't always end well, and there is no way to know if that "help" was needed at all (it forces a change, but now it's a change influenced and angled in favor of the one who helped).
    "Wrath of Khan"
Consider watching Wrath of Khan and the following movies (The Search for Spock and Voyage Home); because they make the story arc for Spock's return; although Wrath of Khan can be seen just on its own, for scientific purposes.
    "Section 31"
Since Starfleet is not exactly a "government", there might not be an exact paralel; but you can think of it as a real life "dark operations" or "highly classified" branch along the lines of MI6 or CIA. MI6 sponsored the development of computers that standarized the decodification process of the Enigma code, and the ancestor of the CIA (the Office of Special Services, OSS), helped nazi scientists to migrate to the United States; so we can say branches that develop special technollogy and scientific research are, many times, part of the current intelligence services of the nations.

Around this time the Enterprise has a maximum warp speed of 7-8. Warp 5 was the max speed of the NX-01 Enterprise.

The bodies in torpedoes were supposed to be destroyed when the Enterprise fired them at Khan, thus wiping the criminals off the rolls.

28:22 Mark! Okay, it is not a "spoiler" at this point to point out something! What Carol Marcus did about her alias is akin to what teenagers today would do when getting a faked identification card. Compare and contrast that to what the government did with Khan! Originally, when played by Ricardo Montalban, he was recognized as an infamous/famous historical figure from Planet Earth's history.
Not wanting that to happen here, "Section 31" went to the needed efforts to make him look and sound different! Otherwise, somebody could say, "Hey! Aren't you Khan Noonien Singe?" 😮 (Spelling?) 😁 But no one recognized him! 😮

All of this took place in an alternate reality, so the original movie The Wrath of Khan would have taken place in the original universe. That's why details were different in this one.

It’s a bit obscure and speculative, so I don’t think any of this is a spoiler. In the Star Trek backstory, there were a series of secret and open conflicts/atrocities on Earth lasting from 1992 to the 2070’s, after first contact with Vulcans: the Eugenics War, the Second American Civil War, possibly a second Eugenics War, World War III, the Last Day, and the Post-Atomic Horror. Khan and the other human augments were manipulators and belligerents in at least one of the Eugenics Wars and was considered both the best and most successful of them, at one point ruling 1/4th of the planet. The each of these events had high death counts with the total being in the billions, which is one of the reasons that Khan and his followers’ escape into space was covered up. It’s also why one of the plot points in the shows is that Earth and then the Federation have a ban on genetic engineering until the 24th Century.

All great acts are hard to follow, and Star Trek Into Darkness is a great one.
All serials have their ebb and flow. Trekkies know to stick with a series; there is always something somewhere that makes the next episode worth the watch. Star Trek Beyond, watched without expectations, has more than a few significant moments.
