Choose whatever makes you happy. Besides Mystic because Arcticuno has almost never been a very good pokemon, especially since Stealth Rocks. And don't pick Valor because Stealth Rocks. Pick Instinct because Zapdos is awesome, and has almost always been a really good pokemon.

Whereas I was trying to think logically I realized that it is true Mystic's feature itself. Two days after that, all Jyms in my town were captured by team Instinct...Yellow domination still continues in my town...

My reason for choosing Team Instinct was because at the time my PE class was focusing on flag football. There were three colors, red, blue, and yellow. I was on the yellow team. The red and blue teams bragged about how they were team Valor and Mystic, while we were just named Instinct then moved on. Nobody was hyped up on the yellow team, probably because of how unpopular Team Instinct was in the game. Because of that, when I finally got Pokemon Go a few years later, I was reminded of that memory and choose Instinct.

Now, Mystic has even more players than before thanks to the addition of team medallions that allow you to change teams for 1000 pokécoins. Since Mystic is the dominant team, people who initially chose Valor or Instinct will now change to Mystic because it's the most popular team and thus gives players in it an advantage over people in the other teams.

My city is mainly Instinct, due to early adopters telling their friends and families "Join team Instinct!" But, there is still enough competition to make things interesting. The other two cites that are adjacent to mine have a similar balance, but with the other teams. The city in the middle is made of equal portions due to this.
Niantic's official figures actually show that Valor has the most gyms.

I chose Mystic based on Articuno in the end. I was seriously considering Instinct, but then I remembered how excited and proud I was to catch Articuno in the game 6-8 years ago, and "Mystic" is a word that appeals to me in general.
I do like blue as well, but I also like red, and I was trying to be more strategic in my choice than "Hm, this ones blue and I like blue so there we go." Also my favorite Pokemon type is ice, so Articuno appeals to me that much more. I never really cared for electric types in general, no matter how cute they can be.. Fire types can be pretty epic, but still don't catch my eye in most games unless it's Torchic. I would always choose Torchic.

Considering you can't catch them in the game, it may be irrelevant as to why a team would be better or worse other than possible future versions that would allow you to perhaps catch the legendary of your team.

its actually moltres, its got the second highest attack of all legendaries in the 1st gen (mewtwo is n.1... go figure), Articuno has the highest defense of the birds and zapdos is the middle one, almost as much attack as Moltres but high defense, also paired with higher speed, he can usually attack before the other birds, but moltres is the best looking at dmg per turn (im team instict doe)
I chose it because Zapdos is competitively the best, is the coolest, and is one of my favorite Pokémon of all time. If it weren't for the birds, I probably would have chosen Mystic, but making the mascots of all the teams the three legendary birds definitely changed things for me.

My area is dominated with Valor/Mystic pretty evenly with about 1/5 of gyms being Instinct.
