Ok all this is caused by humans. The app tells people to stop and look out and most things within the app csn't be done unless u are near it, so all the deaths, and everything is caused by people being stupid to not put the game down. For example u fail a test that u knew about for 3 weeks, not because the test is on things u was never taught but because U didn't study. Who's fault is it the test or u, the answer...u. This is just like the game people know it's dangerous to play and drive and play or anything like that but they still do anyway.

It is not the game killing them it is their own stupidity. The game doesn't force you to drive while playing it actually warns you about it. Also you don't have to stare at the screen 100% of the time while waking.
PikaPunch Gamer Exactly. I'm sick of people blaming games for the stupidity of others. Especially when the game takes steps to ensure that you are playing safely
True, but the lives saved is arguably saving people from stupidity (since they could be walking those steps anyway, but don't). So it's exploiting stupidity vs. saving from stupidity.

@@ghost_deaths1 yes, deaths counter is for US only. But walking counter is for whole world (and also including people who did not walk but ride in their car or by bus or train or any other non-healthy way). Joy bose means that when you count deaths against saved lives you should count both either for one country or for whole world
And also, it doesn't "save" lives. It may extend their life span, and may give them a better quality of life, but it doesn't actually save lives in that way.
Lester004 Playz Pokemon go doesn't trigger anything, blaming injury and death on Pokemon go is stupid when you take into account that it's human choice to play while driving or to trespass, etc. Playing the game doesn't do anything unless you choose to do so under the wrong circumstances. Not looking where you go is your fault, not the game
I’m sure there have been car accident deaths caused by Pokémon go but!, the majority of deadly car accidents are caused by people going above 55mph and since you need to be going 15mph or less to get pokestops and Pokémon I’m guessing the amount of deaths caused by Pokémon go car accidents is substantially lower than 176

It's not the game's fault, it's the users fault for being an idiot and not paying attention to their surroundings. The game itself HAS no ability to kill people. It's just easier to pass the blame to something else than taking responsibility for your own actions.
Kevtendo agreed 100% they even give warnings in the beginning “do not play Pokémon Go and drive” and “do not trespass while playing Pokémon Go”. Come on, people, you are responsible for your own safety!
My comment was not for Matt Patt, but for the people who actually believe it's the game's fault and refuse to accept any other explanation out of ignorance.
The people who died in the accidents didnt have 79 years of life remaining. so you should have taken the average age of the people in the pokemon go accidents in account.
I calculated that with an average age of 42 the number of lost years is 6864. This is worth 86 newborn lives against the 22 saved lives. So Pokemon Go still killed more people than it saved. Especially because you should consider that mainly young people play it, so the average age of death through Pokémon Go should be lower than 42 :(
Keep in mind that the paper he is basing this whole theory on, one that he already stated in the video is biased, compares an /average/ with true data. If there were 2500 accidents in 2014, and 3500 accidents in 2015, the county's average would be 3,000. If in 2016, there were 3,250 crashes, technically, there is a difference of 250 crashes. But what is also true, is that there were 250 LESS deaths than the previous year. Because of this, the way the data is presented could tell a completely different story. To add to this, there were so many variables unaccounted for in this theory, that it's honestly a disgrace to statistics. Taking data from a single county in Indiana and extrapolating it to the ENTIRE USA is completely silly. The extrapolation didn't account for weather, regional differences, or any other thing that may impact the data. Of course there will be more Pokemon GO related crashes in a county with winding hills and unpaved roads, since it requires a lot more attention to drive on them, where as in the middle of Texas, where roads can go straight for miles at a time, it's much less likely that someone distracted by an app would get into an accident. This theory is a massive reach and honestly feels like Matthew is trying to milk Pokemon for its popularity again.
Additionally, he's not factoring in the people who died into his data. The people who died while playing Pokemon GO themselves have an impact on the data. If a person was shot while trespassing playing Pokemon GO, that person was probably a lot more likely to commit a crime such as trespassing without the game. A person with that sort of lifestyle likely doesn't have a lifespan average of 79 years (like Matthew claims in his theory). If 50 people died while playing Pokemon GO who had an estimated lifespan of 30 years, that would skew the data A LOT. These are all things that must be considered when researching a topic, and Matthew has decided to completely ignore them. The video idea on its own is an extremely poorly thought out one, as it's almost impossible to gather the data required to form a proper conclusion. TL;DR: Matpat's bad at statistics this theory is bogus.
umm... Matpat, your didn't math correctly. Or I should say, you didn't interpret your own data correctly when choosing the the numbers you used. First, as you pointed out, the game does not function when traveling over a certain speed. According to google it's around 6 miles an hour. The correct number you should have plugged is the percentage of car crashes that are fatal at six miles per hour (I'm guessing a very small percentage indeed). The speed cap was higher when it originally launched, so you'd need to look that up. Second, when totaling the number of steps to lives saved you ran the numbers under the assumption that every person who died in a car crash was a newborn. No really, you totally did. You used 79 years == a life, but you didn't take into consideration the average age of the people dying in automotive accidents. So if, for example, that average turned out to be 20 years old, you'd have to count each automotive fatality as 59 years of life lost rather then 79. You're usually much more rigorous then this.
Hadriex Also, 6:44 - Why was this eatimated figure halved? By his own admission, the original number we were using was the additional accidents the study found for that year. It would have already only included the period of the games release?
Matpat is not a licensed medical professional but some side effects of Pokémon go may include getting hit by cars, falling into ditches, and trouble with local authorities
I don't know how people are so blind, I can read and walk and not bump into anything. In fact I've come to a quick and full stop so I didn't run into somebody multiple times, I also have a lot of spacial awareness
70,000 crashes happen in my small town in Arkansas every month. Not due to Pokemon go because I'm the only player here, but because people here literally cannot drive
I'd really like to see someone do a follow-up study on those car accidents and deaths by accident. My first thought is that since accidents caused by Go would likely be very low speed (since you can't play at high speeds), the rate of death would be significantly lower than in the average car accident where there is likely to be more force behind the crash. Of course that's not taking into account the speed of other potential vehicles involved in the crash, but still...
Even though I hate this app for it's lack of *_PLAYER VS PLAYER_* (which every other mobile Pokemon game has [mobile not as in phones, as in "movable"]), but every single one of these deaths is NOT due to Pokemon GO; they're due to the users stupidity. It's not the game's fault people are BREAKING THE LAW in order to play this game, or that people stop LOOKING WHERE THEY'RE GOING to watch this game. The game even has build-in features so you don't have to _look_ at the screen all the time. These statistics are just highlighting how many people are too stupid to deserve to procreate. Thank you Pokemon GO for filtering the gene pool!
He also should of assumed that a large number of users were overweight and had seriously decreased their life expectancy and this exercise was bringing them back to the average life expectancy. Basically: Overweight person average life expectancy = 69-59 years old (number varies by study) Average person = 79 years Equate that out to and average of 10+ years of life for each obese user.
There is actually a bunch of things wrong here. He should've at least divided all of those years between the players to figure out how many years each one of them gained, also the average weight loss and how many years that also add.
Neoslayer PW my thoughts exactly. The fans that don't play PkGO cause they don't wanna get up are gonna be more prone to diabetes, but are less likely to walk into traffic. The ones that do play are gonna be more in shape, but more likely to walk into traffic. The slim percentage that manage to play the game enough to get into really good shape, but are street-smart enough to not get mugged or ran over or fall off a bridge doing so - are holding up humanity on their shoulders. Literal natural selection. I don't know how to feel about it.
Hey Matt, please do a game theory on the mobile game 'I became a dog'. It seems like a fun, innocent game until you scratch the surface and find out about all of the horrible things that happen. I don't want to spoil it:) Also, if you don't want to do it, at least check out the game, it's really fun. -a fan
"The game caused deaths"Man,humans are stupid...If you walk on the road only looking at the screen with ANY app,if you play ANY game or do other things while driving then it's the person fault, not the app or game....
The fault is of the ones that get in the middle of the roads and drives with the cellphone active and paying attention to that and not of his/her sorroundings. It's easy to point the finger on an app instead of the idiot who plays it when he/she should not.And very mature of you saying "Idiot " to someone who doesn't think the same way as you,My congrats:Keep on the good work!(irony from "My" to "work!",just to make sure you don't misunderstand it)
I believe its the same principle of survival of the fittest a change in the environment (pokemon go app) didn’t adapt to this change (still functioning in a way that will keep you alive) and got killed off
Except in the case of cars, dumb people have a tendency to take unwilling participants along for the ride too... And I don't think you can stop people from doing it either, the only solution I can see to fixing stupid are self driving cars.

Oh and also because I only have so much space to hide my nerdy clothes.
And The Fact Im A 10 Year Old
Ok all this is caused by humans.

NyanKuriboh it even vibrates when a Pokémon appears, so you don’t have to constantly stare at it
Preach brother.
Let stupidity die. The game supports natural selection

They warn you about this all the time though
Wow. More people go outside = more people getting injured and dieing. Whata cowinkydink.
It's not the game's fault, it's the users fault for being an idiot and not paying attention to their surroundings. The game itself HAS no ability to kill people. It's just easier to pass the blame to something else than taking responsibility for your own actions.
Kevtendo thank you for saying this! Episode was pissing me off a little
Kevtendo agreed 100% they even give warnings in the beginning “do not play Pokémon Go and drive” and “do not trespass while playing Pokémon Go”. Come on, people, you are responsible for your own safety!
He did kinda say at the end that it is the users fault for using phones while driving. :/ God do people never finish videos these days.
👏👐 clap and half for you
My comment was not for Matt Patt, but for the people who actually believe it's the game's fault and refuse to accept any other explanation out of ignorance.
It wasn’t caused by the game, it was caused by people being oblivious when playing the game
which means it was TECHNICALLY, the game.
Thunderstorm But mostly people's ignorance.
Sounds like Black Mirror's slogan: It's not the technology, it's the people
ILikeWaffles I agree
People asked me why I have never played Pokémon, I'll have to refer them to this, if you play Pokémon you die #Confirmed
I said it once I will say it again. The game isn't the problem it's the people-these could easily be avoided.
Yeah we get it
The people who died in the accidents didnt have 79 years of life remaining. so you should have taken the average age of the people in the pokemon go accidents in account.
Except newborns were driving
Hear the disclaimer after Pokemon go in 0.5X it's really worth a try
But he just said at the end that it was for fun and also he’s trying to give both the sides a chance
Kerfunkle Doing things for "fun" doesn't excuse poor logic.
Ok just fogive him maybe he forgot or somthing

LOOK MOM I'M GONNA CATCH ME A LAPRAS!

Edit: Ooooh you gave Arcanine some recognition ;).
But he needed to take into account the average age of a Pokemon go user and the years saved, not assume that a life saved is a full life.
He also should of assumed that a large number of users were overweight and had seriously decreased their life expectancy and this exercise was bringing them back to the average life expectancy.
Basically: Overweight person average life expectancy = 69-59 years old (number varies by study)
Average person = 79 years
Equate that out to and average of 10+ years of life for each obese user.
Wow.
I love when people prove haters wrong, true legend in my book!
There is actually a bunch of things wrong here. He should've at least divided all of those years between the players to figure out how many years each one of them gained, also the average weight loss and how many years that also add.
Did Mat also account for fake GPS abusers and maybe some of those "steps" are actually people moving in vehicles?
