Jazz Jackrabbit would be creating a vortex in its grave, for sure. Somehow this sound font has a really great grungy bass (good for underworld levels?) that doesn't get used as often as it could've. I'm a Nirvana fan, but I never actually played SM64 until a few months ago, and it was because of mixes like this one and others I wound up encountering on YT. I loved this already, but I love it even more now that I'm familiar with the game! This really is art.
I don’t think people are talking enough about how much what was *added* makes these songs even better. Like the more defined major III in the chorus of “Come As You Are,” or the added harmony in the guitar of “Polly”.
I was just thinking about this!! I really like how "In Bloom" makes the melody take a backseat, while the harmony is brought to the forefront. (The harmony for that song always scratched my brain anyway lol)
Polly really blew my mind. Kurt didn't really play all the notes of each chord voicing during each strum; he'd sometimes just play the 2-3 high notes on an upstroke, then the 2-3 low notes on the down stroke, etc, and this cover really emphasized that.

Territorial Pissings is my all-time favorite Nirvana song, and this version actually does it a ton of justice. Mario deciding not to do the opening 'Smile I'm your brother try to love one another' bit and opting to just scream yahoo a thousand times is legendary
Fun fact: those lines come from the chorus of the song "Get Together" by The Youngbloods, a hippie anthem that Kurt disliked. On the real album, it's Krist's only vocal solo (though he does provide backup vocals throughout, like on "Something In The Way". Kurt said he had Krist sing it in a funny voice to represent how the media profits off pretending to make the world a better, smiling place as an act done for money.

one time my brother asked me why i enjoy stuff like soundfont covers so much, this and real songs performed by KKSLIDER. its just amazing to see the music theory! its literally understanding a song from a different perspective, and its so interesting. seeing how certain songs translate..what sounds you choose to use in order to bring the same or similar vibe as the original. seeing how the song works in other contexts! GAH I LOVE IT I CANT STOP REWATCHING THIS VIDEO FOR A YEAR NOW
I genuinely love this as much as the original because of the different feel it gives off. Whereas normal Nirvana kinda has this angry feel to it that gets your blood flowing, this album is a mixture of very cheerful tones and more dark undertones, and it’s amazing to listen to.
The cheerful tones are what make Nirvana, Nirvana, it's just that the cheerful undertones turn sad and back again while played angrily, here you're just hearing the music theory , which surprisingly makes the music cheerful which tells more about Kurts than it does the theory behind it...

Hey you should add this in the description so that it automatically generates chapters
WHY DOES EVERY SONG WORK
No Endless, Nameless?
Would you ever consider uploading the uncompressed masters to bandcamp?
No Rape Me? :'(
To me this just proves how amazing their songwriting was.
Had these tunes only existed in Mario 64, I still argue they'd be "iconic videogame music" .
Jazz Jackrabbit would be creating a vortex in its grave, for sure. Somehow this sound font has a really great grungy bass (good for underworld levels?) that doesn't get used as often as it could've. Maybe you could only have a few tracks at once when these games came out so a rockin bassline was less possible.
You could do this with almost any song and say this, this literally adds no credibility to their songwriting
@@killtheZOG You could make this kind of "grounded" take about anything where someone binds emotional opinionation to their statement. This adds literally nothing of substance that would otherwise invalidate the original commenter's claim.
@@killtheZOG well yeah but it wouldn't be Nirvana's Nevermind album though, clearly the person really appreciates the music and not just the SMB64 sound effects no need to try to dunk on them
@@presinald it has nothing to do with them appreciating the music, the audio just doesn’t give any credit to their songwriting abilities
You can see the baby's reflection at the top. Saying that makes me a fucking troll because it must have taken so much work to do that. I found this cover so incredible.
This must've taken you forever. A true work of art.

@@somethingisreal is there a tool to convert the album into soundfont or did you manually recreate all the sounds? Lol
@@vicente8705 I've never done this and I can't say 100%, but a lot of these songs have probably been programmed in MIDI already, which is kind of like digital sheet music, where you can have the notes play through the instrument/sound of your choice.

It's ethereal.
This really gives me strong Star Control 2 vibes (1992).

The mario "whaaaaaaah" at 21:32 was so perfect lol. I've listened to this album soooo many times, it's refreshing to hear it in a new way. fantastic job on this, ty for sharing :)
Everyone is mentioning In Bloom in the comments, as if Breed, Lounge Act, and Stay Away aren't the hardest boss fight songs I've ever heard- the sound effects sprinkled around the second half of the album are AMAZING
Having to reply to this as I can't take it above 64 likes. Curse whoever inevitably does. 👍🏻😂
Breed sounds like a FF6 or 7 boss fight

Breed is easily my favorite one. It was on the original album too, but this cover enhances it drastically.

@@Lost_n_Found_1i thought it was a valuable opinion lol
Actually this is entirely awesome. Kinda proves how genius Kurt's melodic brain was, and how great the drum patterns are on these songs.
Chad Channings drum fills, not the foo fighters guy, btw.
@@BuenoMcgurski Grohl tracked drums on Nevermind according to Wikipedia. Channing was uncredited for his cymbals on a song, and apparently did some drums for the smart studio sessions.
This is pretty cool, but I wouldn’t call Kurt a “melodic” genius. His music was okay.. but there was nothing special about it. It’s just catchy.. and before you give me shit, I too am a musician. Although I play in a black metal band. You can check us out if you want, we’re called Votan. I think we’re pretty good, but I wouldn’t say we’re geniuses either. “On a Plain” nearly made me teary. It triggers a strange and powerful nostalgia for a Christmas-themed bonus SM64 level that never existed.
Perfectly summarised
I also felt a very strong nostalgia from this and I figured out where from!
It reminds me on Monkey Hero on the PS1!
Its like two nostalgias at once
I'm a Nirvana fan, but I never actually played SM64 until a few months ago, and it was because of mixes like this one and others I wound up encountering on YT. I loved this already, but I love it even more now that I'm familiar with the game! This really is art.
Fun fact: before Nirvana got big, Kurt used to stay up all night playing Super Mario World.
Sadly that's on SNES in a different bit rate and sound font.
@@LeonisYT He did not comment on that
Source: trust me bro
@@Mcneds Dave Grohl said it before it
Nobody believes Dave Grohl. Kurt was obsessed with Sega Genesis.
I don’t think people are talking enough about how much what was *added* makes these songs even better. Like the more defined major III in the chorus of “Come As You Are,” or the added harmony in the guitar of “Polly”.
Because that's music theory and most people don't know theory lol
I was just thinking about this!! I really like how "In Bloom" makes the melody take a backseat, while the harmony is brought to the forefront. (The harmony for that song always scratched my brain anyway lol)
I'd give my Nintendo 64 to have this cover album on vynile (or cd) 😭😭😭

Sounds like boss battle music in the early Metroid or Doom games, only as little bit more upbeat.
one time my brother asked me why i enjoy stuff like soundfont covers so much, this and real songs performed by KKSLIDER.
its just amazing to see the music theory! its literally understanding a song from a different perspective, and its so interesting. seeing how certain songs translate..what sounds you choose to use in order to bring the same or similar vibe as the original. seeing how the song works in other contexts!
Polly is such a dark song but it’s like the most adorable one in this soundfont 😅
Big underwater level energy.
This is just one of the best videos youtube has recommended me.

Amazing! Lithium truly sounds like it belongs in the game.
For me it's Something In The Way
- 00:00 smells like teen spirit: menu music/main theme
- 03:29 in bloom: the background music for a very important area, maybe a castle?
- 07:29 come as you are: volcano level
- 09:45 breed: boss battle!! w/ victorious music changes as the battle turns in your favor
- 11:39 lithium: possibly the overworld music. the first verse is definitely the main theme for the area you start in like your house/hometown and some of the background music you hear during dialogue there. the chorus is more fast-paced and feels more like travel music
- 15:13 polly: dialogue background music for sure. I can just imagine you in an npc's house during it
- 16:59 territorial pissings: tense overworld theme, maybe the theme music for when you're traveling at night or surrounded by monsters
- 19:05 drain you: hardest to place for me. for some reason my thought was shop music? chorus feels a little tense for that though. and the sounds during the bridge! yeah no idea where I would put it haha
- 22:39 lounge act: also a little hard to place, could make for some fun travel theme music (hyrule field vibes, you know)
- 25:13 stay away: miniboss or non-boss fight theme, maybe even a racing level. either way very fun.
- 27:56 on a plain: dialogue music or shop/merchant music for sure
- 31:02 something in the way: background music for a very sinister area, maybe a water lavel or graveyard
