I'm Spanish and when I started to read the nutritional info of the products in the US I freaked out, everything has nearly twice as much sugar as the equivalent products in Spain. I guess it's because of legal restrictions in the EU, because the food companies are the same ones in most cases (although the brand name can differ). An additional problem is the misguiding nutritional info "by portion", with portions of maybe 4 g. With an accuracy of 1 g, and the rounding, a product can have nearly 25% sugar and still state "0 g" in the table. In Spain (I think in the EU in general) this is provided for 100g of product always, so if something has sugar, there is no way to hide it with these cheap tricks.
In Australia every product has a per 100g table of nutrition info which makes it a lot easier to keep track of. It sounds crazy to only have a portion size which they can make tiny compared to the amount that you would actually eat.

We make our own plain yogurt without any additives except whatever is in the milk we use. We have done this for decades in Eastern Europe but no one called it Greek yogurt. It's super easy to do, try it. Boil the milk (whole or 2%), let it cool down where its lukewarm. Place it somewhere where its not too cold, my mom always puts it in a corner next to the stove. We do this in the evening and by the morning yogurt is done. Sometimes, it might not work and there might be several reasons for it: milk was either too hot or too cold. The room where you left it is too cold but try it few times and see how it goes. I'd love to hear if you had success with it. Also, once its done we keep it in a fridge. It can last for up to two weeks or so. We keep it until it changes the smell, and taste to more sour one. You'll be able to tell the difference.

Yogurt is super easy to make, I even made it from white mold from brie cheese (for the MK4 vitamin K2) and it tasted great, creamy with almost no acid.
Thanks for briefly mentioning that not all Yogurt you can buy has added sugar. Just like not all cheese you can buy is Velveeta and not all Beef you can buy is pink slime. It is an excellent example of Low Fat usually equating to high sugar, which is a message worth repeating often.
I want to mention a minor point about this video just in case any of your viewers didn’t pick up on your sarcasm about yogurt being ‘low fat’. I know you understand that saturated fat in our diet is not bad for us as we’ve been told for so many years, but is actually good for us. I’ve watched you extol the virtues of saturated fat in some of your other videos. And an upcoming article in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, JAC 27459, May 2020, underscores the protective effects of dietary saturated fat against stroke. Keep up the good work.
Dannone high protein vanilla yoghurt (160g serving size) (15g protein, 5.1g sugar) Add an apple and peaches sliced into it Small portion of granola And on the side, a piece of multi-grain toast with almond butter, banana slices on top + a drizzle of maple syrup And a cup of coffee Easy days
If we're just talking about the average every day crappy yogurts and ice creams of course both of them are gonna be bad for you. Honestly you can literally make ice cream and yogurt at home that will be healthier than anything you're gonna get at the store and it's not even hard to make.
Yeah but I don't think most people expect yogurt to be worse for you than ice cream. And yeah anyone can make almost any food from scratch - most don't
Add some drops of sweetener and fresh lemon zest to thick yoghurt, put it in the fridge, then eat as an ice-cream. If not on diet, sweetener can be honey, natural syrups or molasses. Or blended berries or fruits. Yoghurt ice-cream!.
@freddy Yes. of course. I myself am on keto, and I eat yoghurt savory. That's why my first suggestion was lemon zest with SWEETENERS. And then I have added, If! Not! on a Diet! then honey and...... etc...
Chobani less sugar yogurt has only 10 to 11 grams of sugar depending on the flavor in a 5 oz container. The cinnamon vanilla flavor tastes great and is fun to mix with walnuts and blackberries or red raspberries. Enjoy!
I remember when the little containers of yogurt came onto the market, super sweet, and handy, and you didn’t see the big containers of plain yogurt for quite a while after. I’ve always liked to make yogurt, with whole milk, and it continues to be an important part of my dairy consumption. But all those little plastic containers yogurt comes in is another consideration, in terms of pollution. Thanks Dr Berg, I really appreciate what I’ve learned from you, I’m a healthier person for it and I like that.
Yep, I stopped buying yogurts and icecream 2 years ago, the moment I started digging deep into problems caused by sugar and insulin resistence. Scary!!!
I startded eating yogurt from about July to December last year and I put on so much weight. I went from like 11% body fat to 15% body fat and I had no idea why. I wasn't doing anything too different from my normal diet and then I realized it was the Yoplait yogurt. I could eat 4 a day for 40g of protein and like 60g of sugar. Poison.
In India , we make Curd at home . No sweetners or any other additives . Previous Curd culture added to Plain boiled & cooled milk & set aside for a day or half, depending upon the temperature ( warmth).
I only know one brand of yogurt that is actually low carb, in the single serve size, Two Good. It can be as high as 3 grams of carbs. I can't remember what kind of sweetener it used. The only size I see plain yogurt in anymore is 16 ounces.
Two Good is my goto, uses Stevia. Also liked Ellie Quark, was a tad higher carbs as it included erythritol but hard to find this brand outside of west coast USA once they stopped online.
My grandmother taught me how to make fresh milk yogurt 50 years ago. There is no comparison. I grew up on a dairy farm and it is whole milk or die but goat milk is better.
Good morning dear Dr Eric, Thank you so much for your video showing us" Yogurt vs Ice cream" comparison. Which one is healthier ? Honestly, i am making yoghurt at home for last 11 years, because I don't need to add sweet to it , more healthy version. Packed yogurt in cause allergy to me, due to corn syrup and high sweeteners in it. Ice cream , not healthy food for anyone, can say occasionally once in summer but cannot be taken as dessert regularly. Dr, once again, thank you so much for your video. Best regards Sarjit
Here in Brazil, Activia has 25g of sugar per 200g of yogurt. I have no idea why yogurt in America has so much more sugar than here.. This is the regular version of Activia. There's also the "0% sugar" version, actually it's just 0% ADDED sugar, which has 6g of sugar per 200g of yogurt.
W O W ! ! ! Personally, I never cared too much for yogurt. But, I know one of my nieces has nearly lived on it for years & also is a diabetic. Strangely, she is the only one in our family who is diabetic & also the only one who consumes yogurt by the pint on a daily basis. And has for most of her life. Really healthy, right?
I typically add 1/4 cup Activia to my morning cereal with whole milk added. Activia can cause loose stools if eaten too much. Lately I’ve added 1/3 cup cottage cheese (4+% milk fat ) for added protein. Activia also comes in Greek and Light versions.
All those products that manufacturers label as “yogurt” there not really that. In Greece these are called desserts by law, so consumers know what they purchase. Products can be labeled as yogurts only if they contain milk, skimmed or full fat, and yogurt culture. Nothing else. A product that is loaded with sugar and so many chemicals cannot be called yogurt. As simple as that.
40 years ago yogurt was yogurt. Dannon yogurt 40 years ago was great, today the quality is gone, it's JUNK. THEIR, just like JUNK, cereal. I buy, plain organic, Stonyfield, probionic yogurt, and add pure cinnamon to it. It's 8g of sugar, they try to be healthy, IT SHOCK ME what people put in their basket. FOOD not fit for a dog.

Yogurt is so easy to make at home and sweetened with stevia, add frozen fruit blend together and freeze in individual cups. Viola! Frozen yogurt. I made this last night.
Excellent video! Very concise and informative. Just over 3 years ago, a diabetic nurse was informing a group of newly diagnosed T2Ds that low fat yogurt was an ideal food to consume. Once again, erroneously in my opinion, the focus was entirely on calories rather than sugar content or GI. Even plain low fat yogurt has more sugar than plain full fat. When I brought this to her attention, I was dismissed as an an imbecile! At the end of the talk, I suggested checking the labels on her next trip to the supermarket. Hopefully, I was given the benefit of doubt, and future newly diagnosed diabetics would not be given the same bad advice.
I recommend dannon Oikos triple zero. Sweetened with Stevie and taste pretty good. A bit of chicory root fiber that may cause some bloating, and half the flavors have carageenan in them so avoid those.
I remember my German grandma used to say that cereal was being given to the pigs and humans were not suppose to eat it... she also used to make her own yogurt. Only used 2 teaspoons of sugar throughout the day for her tea. She was so thin, ate like a bird and used to fast a lot. She always said that fasting was good for the body... where did she get that wisdom?
Karoun Kefir Labne which is labeled as cheese is very similar to a type of persian yogurt containing 4 g sugar and 8 g carbs in 120 g of product. It is not sweet at all but very delicious. I recommend it to Insulin Resistance people in moderation off course.
I have The Dairy Collective brand... in plain or Passion fruit. This is an amazing tasting brand. Or Real Greek yogurt. Or Kefir. But Im glad you alerted me to this. I love dairy Id pick it over ANY chocolate or sweeties.
I started eating plain yoghurt. I add my own berries and some erythritol sweetener these days. It's quite enjoyable. I just couldn't believe how my light yoghurt wasn't diet friendly at all. So misleading!
Oh, that makes sense. Yogurt is a lot more tart than cream, so they add a whole bunch of extra sugar to overcome that tart flavor compared to ice cream.
Plain yogurt, on the other hand has fewer calories (around 11o), fewer ingredients (milk & active cultures), and no added sugar (my favorite brand contains 7 grams of sugar and 12 grams of protein per 8 oz. as reported on internet>>>

Dr Berg, this is no real youghurt,it's an oversweetend snack!
Originally youghurt was a little sour, refreshing and plain and very healthy.
Love ur videos Doc.
Dannone high protein vanilla yoghurt
(160g serving size)
(15g protein, 5.1g sugar)
Add an apple and peaches sliced into it
Small portion of granola
And on the side, a piece of multi-grain toast with almond butter, banana slices on top + a drizzle of maple syrup
And a cup of coffee
Easy days
Love you guys!..... I am from Colombia 🇨🇴 South America!
If we're just talking about the average every day crappy yogurts and ice creams of course both of them are gonna be bad for you.
Honestly you can literally make ice cream and yogurt at home that will be healthier than anything you're gonna get at the store and it's not even hard to make.
@freddy true dat
@freddy
Yes.
Scary!!!
You mean yoghurt DESSERTS.
Excellent video, thank you
Most welcome! Glad you liked it.
Thanks Dr Berg. Great info... never thought of yogurt as having more sugar.💕
Well, I guess getting the one with the mini M+M's is right out...
Good morning dear Dr Eric,
Thank you so much for your video showing us" Yogurt vs Ice cream" comparison.
Best regards
Sarjit
Here in Brazil, Activia has 25g of sugar per 200g of yogurt. I have no idea why yogurt in America has so much more sugar than here..
This is the regular version of Activia. There's also the "0% sugar" version, actually it's just 0% ADDED sugar, which has 6g of sugar per 200g of yogurt.
Oikos Greek Triple Zero Yogurt. Zero fat, artificial sweetener and added sugars.sugar. taste great
Kindly compare between white flour and cassava flour???
And is a better alternative for white flour??
W O W ! ! !
Personally, I never cared too much for yogurt. But, I know one of my nieces has nearly lived on it for years & also is a diabetic. Strangely, she is the only one in our family who is diabetic & also the only one who consumes yogurt by the pint on a daily basis. And has for most of her life. Really healthy, right?
send her the video. you may save her life
@@Cookie4XO - Yes. I did. I hope she takes this video seriously. But, when you're 26 years of age, what do old people know?
Dr. Berg, you just lost credibility with me! ("/yo-PLATE/"??!!)
I was also very surprised when he pronounced it like that...surely he must realise the t at the end of the word is silent??!!
I heard that, too lol! For all the excellent info he provides, I'll give him a pass on the "yoplate"!!!
@@rebeccasimantov5476 Apparently not!
he isn't familiar with other languages...and this is a french word.
I typically add 1/4 cup Activia to my morning cereal with whole milk added. Activia can cause loose stools if eaten too much. Lately I’ve added 1/3 cup cottage cheese (4+% milk fat ) for added protein. Activia also comes in Greek and Light versions.
I made the garlic bread yesterday very good, going to make it again.
Oh my, Dr. Berg!! I'm thinking of all the stupid stuff I have eaten, THINKING it was a good choice...😒. Ever since I discovered your channel in 2018, I have CHANGED my ways for the better... But I am still 50 pounds overweight, insulin resistant, and low energy... 😴. Now, with the economic situation, I can't afford to do much else but fast and continue stoking my mind with your videos to keep me going... I have revamped my kitchen and am creating a KETO pantry to feed my husband and myself. He lost over 50 pounds last year and transformed his entire body shape -- all from following the body-type advice from your book... I lost 35 pounds and have kept 20 off since then. I am going on 64 years old, and my body type is adrenal. I feel I am healing slowly...
Ur wonderful Grandma !!
I am 69 , diabetic use sugarfree wanna lose some weight. Inspiring.
Awesome video
Karoun Kefir Labne which is labeled as cheese is very similar to a type of persian yogurt containing 4 g sugar and 8 g carbs in 120 g of product. It is not sweet at all but very delicious. I recommend it to Insulin Resistance people in moderation off course.
I have The Dairy Collective brand... in plain or Passion fruit. This is an amazing tasting brand.
Or Real Greek yogurt. Or Kefir.
But Im glad you alerted me to this. I love dairy Id pick it over ANY chocolate or sweeties.
The first thing i look for in the food labels is added sugar and sugars. Then the amount of ingredients specially the very first ingredient. Thanks!
What about the "low sugar" yoghurt with added sweeteners like sucralose. Is it as bad as the sugar yoghurt? I
My grandma eats traditional yogurt which is made from buffalow milk processed in a traditional way. It's plain and delicious.
Thank you Dr. Berg.
I started eating plain yoghurt. I add my own berries and some erythritol sweetener these days. It's quite enjoyable. I just couldn't believe how my light yoghurt wasn't diet friendly at all. So misleading!
Ya what about organic unsweetened plain yogurt with monkruit sweetener? Is it keto?
Thank you for telling us
Very interesting!
Hi dr berg 💗🌹🌿. Thank you so much
I learned to make my own yogurt using whole milk and yogurt. 😊
I get milk from my neighbor´ cost, and make my own yogurt every week. I add a bit of vanilla, and its a wonderful food!
Lemon zest is good too, if you will make youghurt ice-cream.
Oh, that makes sense. Yogurt is a lot more tart than cream, so they add a whole bunch of extra sugar to overcome that tart flavor compared to ice cream.
But what about plain greek yogurt with no added sugar?
He said that was fine. Though you may not want to overdo it if you're not used to fermented foods.
Plain yogurt, on the other hand has fewer calories (around 11o), fewer ingredients (milk & active cultures), and no added sugar (my favorite brand contains 7 grams of sugar and 12 grams of protein per 8 oz. as reported on internet>>>
This is why I only eat full fat natural Greek yogurt or kefir.
I enjoy kefir and would never consume the yogurts you've listed. There are quite a few great tasting keto icecream brands on the market these days.🐾
Two days ago was my birthday.. and I eat a spoon of gelato and super tiny brownie.
I was super scared... But for now nothing bad happen.
