  • Well the description says it all. We have this Honda Civic 1.7 that got towed in with a "crank no start." It was an easy mystery to solve though...

I bought a 04 civic ex with 130k with broken timing belt for $500. The body and interior was immaculate!! I just bought a jdm engine for $550, a gasket kit for about $100, and a timing belt/water pump kit for $70. After all said and done, I had a running car for around $1300. Still have it 4 years/80k miles later!

Takes me back a few years ago. They pack everything in such a tight space. Glad to see you didn’t have the antilock brake D block behind the washer fill. My 2002 with 238k miles had something get into the main pulley, tore the time cover to pieces and gasket slipped the timing belt off. Bent 4 valves, and I was reliving my adventure of doing that very job watching your video. Of course I’m old school so no fancy gadgets just the standard knowledge of sounds and mechanical sense. Great videos!

Great diagnostics. That Civic is definitely an interference engine. Looks like those pistons kissed the valves for sure. A lot of the Civics, Accords, Preludes are interference engines. Its a bad day when a Honda timing belt breaks. Best option for your customer is a different completely rebuilt head $240-$300 , $250 head gasket set with bolts, belt, tensioner, water pump etc. Thats if he can salvaged the pistons, in some cases you can unless they have a hole. But he has to do it his self DIY. My daughter just did a head gasket on this same engine 1.7L the video will be out soon. Great work South Main you handle your content like a real boss, God Bless.

Getting new timing belt, Water pump, serp belts, from and rear main seals while at it. Keep it up!

hxtr timing chains also stretch and skip teeth. Most people think timing chains are the be all end all, they aren’t. They are better than Belts but with newer cars they have sides and guides. It’s not like the old 350 motors with a chain and gears only. Still have some of the same belt problems.

Excellent vid, shows why you should follow the manufacturer's scheduled service intervals (not the dealers). With proper maintenance that's easily a 225-300k mile cars. I assumed Honda 4 cylinders were all chain driven, I was wrong. I would have had you fix it, still cheaper than a replacement at that time and you would have done the job right.

  • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

I bet the timing belt shredded partially, jumped time, but kept spinning the cams out of time to cause the carnage. FUBAR!
The most bulletproof t-belt engine that I've come across is the Toy-oater 3.4L V6 ('96 to '04 4-Runner, Tacoma). Non-interference and a wide beefy belt. Have a customer with 200k on his original belt on an '04 Tacoma...runs like new :)

Was doubling clutching as I was downshifting from 4th to second and just as I was coming out of the curve hit the redline and that was all she wrote. Had my dad help me tow her back home and before the night was over, I had a new belt on her and was ready for some more fun with the Hondo. Love that car, great on gas and because she was a rust bucket I could park her anywhere and not worry about door dings.

Yeah. I had that happen on a 2004 Aveo LS at about 120K. The damage to the engine was minor despite me being on the gas at the time (had it floored going about 70 on the highway, trying to get around a truck). In my case, it was a pulley that broke. My dad and I did the job, and it went surprisingly well. Kicked up and ran for a while. The bottom end of the motor went about 20,000 miles later due to oil pressure issues that developed with that motor. Sold it for a grand and got the Taurus a few months later.

I had a 2003 with the 2.4 4 cylinder. That engine was interference fit and at about 240,000km she let go and bent the no.2 intake valve. No head or piston damage so a whack of new parts and off she goes !
Regardless of OEM recommendations I've always been confident of belts and chains until about 200,000km ( 120,00 miles ? )
IMO at 200 ( 120 ) change it just do it regardless of what the book says.

hey eric, before you do a timing chain job or head gasket ,lets say on a sohc engine, you put the cyl1 on tdc ,the valves are close for compression stroke, that's tsc?right? does that all timing mark are aligned?is it safe to work on the engine at this point as long as you put the tools to hold your cam shaft in place. thanks

I like what you said. So I'm installing a piston cuz I had a bearing take a poop in cylinder 3. Well since replacing said new piston and getting it to timing it's still not working. But how am I gonna check things after I try things unless I turn it over to see if it starts. So kudos that was nice and made me feel better about feeling stupid as dumb as that is to say haha

Arrr shucks. Would have been EPIC to see another multi part video series on doing the head on a Honda engine. The RAV4 and EJ253 vids were epic.
If it was a manual transmission it might have been worth getting an engine from a scrap yard, but chances are the transmission doesn't have much life left in it at 165k and probably not a whole load of maintenance. I prefer Toyota's. But my sister has whats sold in the US as a Honda fit. Its literally had nothing go wrong with it in 9 years/70,000 miles besides some judder in the CVT that a fluid change fixed. Its a strange engine, 1.4 petrol, SOHC and its chain driven. Its actually as efficient as a diesel if you drive it properly. Gotta love Asian vehicles.

Honda recommends 90,000 for a timing belt change, which is when my neighbor had his done at the dealer, but they screwed up the job and didn't even use a Honda timing belt, the tensioner spring had come off and was wedged between the crank pulley and the crank sensor, thank goodness the engine wasn't damaged, I replaced everything with genuine Honda parts and it ran great, they used a dayco belt that wasn't even the right width.

You ever do any timing belts on Ford Zetec motors? I got an 03 Escape with 176k on it and have no idea if the belt has ever been changed. I am a little scared of tackling it. Wondered if you had any pointers.
