- It’s always interesting when you get in a vehicle and there is a box of parts sitting on the passenger seat. This one came in with exactly that. It’s had a fuel pump, ECM, camshaft sensors, coils, plugs, and a couple other parts replaced. It is still a crank, no start. In this video you’ll see a logical diagnostic plan that gets to the answers in a time effective way. The total time to get the answer was about 1 hour.
This is yet another example of the power of the scope. Without the scope, we would have had to do lots of tear down at the clients expense. Instead we got the answer quick and the client didn’t have to spend unnecessary tear down costs. We hope this helps. Enjoy!

What you could do is have the highlights (condensed) version of the video as regular, and then a full all background video available for subscribers or some membership platform. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be willing to pay some... Plus it would help subsidize costs towards upgrading filming infrastructure...

Well done👍🏻! Don’t forget to put a new crank sensor in too after you get the timing sorted. Noticed the signal is inverted. Gap on know good is low and gap on the car is high. Have seen that issue on Nissan’s 4.0v6 with the cam sensor and it will show the timing being off but the signal is just inverted. Wouldn’t be surprised if it has a cheap aftermarket sensor. Aftermarket parts are always hit or miss.
Spending enough time in car forums, reddit, etc I can bet I know what happened. Owner comes in and says "it cranks but won't start" and people chime with "when mine did that, I had to replace the computer" and someone else says "spark plugs/coils" and someone else says "fuel pump" and so on. No one listens when some folks ask "what codes are triggered?" or "what have you diagnosed?".
I'm an automotive locksmith. All we do is cars all day everyday and I would have declined this job. I tell customers we do 2 things. We make "lost" keys and lockouts. I get calls weekly "my car won't start I think my key needs to be reprogrammed". I explain there is no such thing as a key losing programming. Of course they argue with me. I explain this is an expensive process and if we come out and make a new key (we don't reprogram keys because that's not a thing) and your car still doesn't start you are still paying me because you diagnosed it and I told you to get a proper diag. I have never had anyone take me up on it. If they tell me they went swimming with the fob or they physically damaged it that's another story and we do those. Not starting with no known damage I send them to a mechanic. A good percentage of them get irate with me curse me out etc etc I don't care. I will not be part of someones shit show because they refuse to get a car looked it.
We also get them where we make them a lost key and they never told us the car didn't start before they called us. Customers are something else. We show them the security light is off and the fob is good. Those people usually don't don't argue with us.
I had a Nissan Altima not start after the key's where programmed wrong by Ace Hardware locksmith. I am a mechanic and redid both keys and it ran great for several years after. That is a common Nissan thing after owning several.
@@jaygames1980 Having someone program the keys wrong is not the same as a perfectly good working key losing programming and needing to be reprogrammed. There is no such thing. Not even sure why you responded to what I wrote with what you wrote. I have seen fobs programmed that didn't have all the functions but once again that is a programming/user error. Why would anyone have ACE Hardware program a key by a clerk who maybe took a weekend course at best?I don't get that TBH. Not sure what is suppose to be common on a Nissan. Nissan doesn't have any more key programming issues than any other make. Honda's and Subaru's have programming issues as far as Asian cars go. If you know what you are doing both can be avoided.

Toyota Pro Ace City vans have and sometimes do lose programming on keys , it very much is possible I’ve witnessed this first hand, most vans in Europe all use engines and software from French manufacture Peugeot, so this issue isn’t exclusive to Toyota can also happen on Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat, Opel/Vauxhall(GM)
@@AnthonyAE86IRL I'm in America and it's not a thing here and I stand by that. We don't see domestic European vehicles. We only have imported Euro's made for the U.S. market. I do see Euro locksmiths and have never seen this issue from them either but I can only be sure about our market. It doesn't happen. Coils break on boards and chips go bad. That isn't losing programming but a parts failure. BCM's can go bad but that isn't a programming failure on the key. I still with everything I know about key programming think you are wrong unless you can point me to something factual that states otherwise. Everyone and their mother blames all kinds of weird issues on their keys at least here. I can count on one hand the amount of keys that actually go bad per year that aren't physically damaged. We do this 80-150 times per week. This is all we do. The ones that actually go bad happen to be mostly Euro keys. It's a thing with Mercedes especially coils going bad on the board.
Just to let people know the battery on a fob is for the buttons. You can take the battery out of the fob and still start the car. People mix the transponder function up with the button functions.

Love the channel, I’ve been doing industrial hvac service/diagnostics for 20 years and it’s very interesting to see the similarities and differences in the process between trades.

Absolutely want to see you hook things up in detail and go through your thought process. Actually discovered you after Eric O. from SMA recommended you and haven't looked back. You're a great teacher and I love your thought process and data-driven approach. I'm just a DIY'er and I love trying to fix my cars but if I'm honest, I'm just guessing most of the time and throwing the parts canon at it. I would love to learn from a professional like yourself that takes a systematic approach EVEN when you have a hunch as to what it might be from years of experience. Guys like you and Eric. O are the reason that people send their nuisance projects to you - you always look at the data/evidence even if it means ignoring your hunch.
You did a great job of making and showing us this video. It is all about input and output. If you have the wrong input then guess what the output will also be wrong. The big problem as you explained is when you don't know what the signal or timing should be, you are in trouble.
Solid diag. I had an infinti like this recently. It had one bank out of time. Fun fact - the engine won't run if out of time, but WILL run with a sensor unplugged. Easy test, unplug the bank out of time, and it will run. Main chain jumped on one bank.

I was gonna comment a similar idea. Put the scope back on injector and coils, and unplug both cam sensors. It may still not run but if now you get signals to the injectors and coils, that's a second piece of proof the pcm is not happy with the cam timing.

I really like the videos as detailed as possible. Something as simple as a back probe, if not done correctly, could be even more problematic. But I'm a detail guy who likes to see it and hear why it's being done. I'll watch whatever you put out. Great videos. Can't wait for you to hit 100K!
This is a perfect video for those who don't use a scope.. Get one! I had a Honda Accord with a cylinder number one misfire, Engine ran perfect other than a check engine light ..scoped just as you have here and bingo. Timing Chain
Love the description and details. One thing I have learned over the years, some vehicles, specifically most cars with a timing belt, usually has a PID in the engine data that shows cam/crank correlation or sync and it will tell you if it is I time or not during cranking in a matter of minutes. Huge time saver! Recently had a crank no start and found it would jump from sync to no sync and it was 7 teeth off. 😊

So many techs will shoot some whatever in there for a fast diagnosis. I don't see any downside to that. If it fires, you get answers. I think it's almost SOP. Fast, easy, logical.
I always want to see how exactly the scope is set up on the coils and injectors. And what settings is use and on which wire. Cause when I do it, I can’t get a good waveform on it.

This is why your business deserves recognition, absolutely above and beyond and truly Diagnosing, and not just a "parts replacer". Even further your looking to even share your information out to people, maybe one day you'll have your own website that connects data between many different shops and places for we can unify all the data and have access to it as a resource for every other shop. I trust your data more than almost all of the data we get from these dealerships and engineers on the internet.

Yes sir - I would like to see the whole process. I honestly don't care if the video is longer.
One of the problems with this video is when you're like "We're going to hook up to the engine control module and bring you back when that's all set up" well honestly, that's annoying and not helpful. Just set the camera on a tripod and do the work and narrate what you're doing. To see leads hooked up without the analysis for what wires to clip your leads to does us very little good. I'm not going to say there's no value but for us DIYers, these are significant and important steps.
And maybe that's the issue - maybe your vids are targeted more for seasoned mechanics, not us DIYers. Anyways, you asked for feedback so there's mine.

Showing how to identify when the engine is out of time with the scope really helped especially taking the time to show how you determined it. Also just telling where you can find the information to compare waveforms was really helpful.

I think seeing the whole process is the way to go. It helps with scope proficiency and also there are many times where it is pertinent. Perhaps backprobing one particular signal fixes a loose connection and now your crank no start unexpectedly starts. Things like are critical to the diagnostic process.

i have done a ton of timing chains on the vq35 engine when i was at the dealer , easiest to drop engine and trans down , cradle drop , just enough to pull it apart , too hard to get cover out and back in otherwise , 3 chains ,, all the tensioners and vct sprockets ,all the guides , and good to go for another 100k ... i was probably whining before it jumped time , the guides wear out on the tensioners , and rub the chains and whine like a supercharger , or an old gear drive , tell tail sign ..

I personally would love to see more scoping videos and kind of a brake down of how you know when a wave lenth is off.... like is there a thing on mitchells that shows you the knowen good wavelengths and such just to see the process of a seasoned machanic is worth its weight in gold we dont care if they are a hour long people that want to learn will watch the full hour trust me.... keep up the videos

Great detective work guy's. I think timing chain failure is pretty common on Nissans.
So glad i came across your channel and as a bonus you use the escope!! The pico is a slick scope, and is the one that 90% of the training ive been to is done with a pico. However, i use the escope almost daily and is awesome to see how you use it and its features compared to how i do!
I just did an '18 Pathfinder for complete chains sets, tensioners and all 4 phasera and guides... Primary chain tensioner was extended maxxed... Did all chains not just primary. 105k mileage.
Change oil more often and never buy one without a cool morning start.
Just finished a '19 Crosstrek
P0019, driver's side tensioner failed, did all as above, complete, in order to offer full warranty coverage....
It had 70k miles.
Change oil more often people...
3k- 3500 max interval....

Ive got an 2008 quest that ive givin up on. 182k miles.
Fuel gauge issue and an egr issue.
Thrown 2 fuel pumps and 2 egrs , still no progress.
Dont have the skills or the diag tools to figure it out.
All the shops around here just want to throw parts at it. Super annoying that even though im willing to pay for a proper diag.
They won't or don't want to .
So because its the wifes car i wanted something more reliable and newer.

i had the same problem with a nissan. Upon research I found that if you disconnect the cam sensor, the engine will start. It did for me.
Of course that's not a "fix", but then you can do the in cylinder test to further your diagnostic.
Showing the entire process for a garage mechanic would give a better idea of ways to using tools that we are not to familiar with so we could learn other ways to find in issues that we are not too familiar with

Yes, sadly I agree it’s the owner that most likely shot the parts cannon at this van. Some shops are like this too, but not typically these days. A lot of money in parts.
Would have saved a heap of money if they had, had your shop look at it first, diagnose and repair. When you don’t know what you’re doing, better to get someone who does. Cheaper in the end!
The manufacturer's strategies are getting more and more complex so further damage will not be taking place you are actually proving the necessity of having a scope to determine the actual cause in all the years I've always asked myself how can I obtain a strategies and usually the only way I obtain the strategies is just like you're doing you wind up with a problem one just like the Ford the other day with the injecto if I remember it was turning the century but the manufacturer's been using these different strategies and it would always be nice to know what they are IN ADVANCE😅
That was the 2002 Taurus that would turn the injector on for 30 seconds and then turn it off for 30 seconds and then repeat over and over again. It took Sherwood hours of testing to clarify that this was in fact not an intermittently failing computer driver or open wire. I was super surprised to see a strategy like this on anything non-German from before 2005 or so. Maybe Ford and BMW were holding hands longer than i thought xD.
