Those mid budget movies seem to have disappeared. Not a blockbuster, but still a great cast. Just a fun movie nothing to deeply analyze, but still 90 minutes well spent.
My Grandpa was in a small local band in the 60s named the Wonders. When That Thing You Do came out my grandpa and one of the other members sent him a letter telling Tom the good memories the movie brought back. Tom wrote him a very nice note back. That movie is one of my feel good movies now. I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Tom. But I’ve run into his brother Larry a couple of times before. Very nice people.
I watched That Thing You Do when it came out and many times since. I've never once thought it was anything but a great film! I even get a smile when I see his production company's logo, Playtone, pop up on the opening credits to other movies.
I recently watched A Man Called Otto, and having lost my dad in September, I saw a lot of my dad’s behaviors and speech in that movie. It was tough to get through at times and was also welcoming to see a facsimile of my dad. It will be a movie i will rewatch again and again, like many of Hanks’ movies.
This (the full podcast) is the single best interview I’ve heard on Conan. Tom Hanks was more himself than I have ever heard. I learned more about acting and making films and the film industry and how Tom approaches it differently in this one hour. It felt intimate and personal and hysterical. Tom Hanks is a gas. Ty Conan. Ty Tom. Sometimes you capture a genuine time together and you did that here. You guys should probably dress up and mini golf together.
Hanks describes so much of the creative process for artists out there. Songwriters, writers, and so forth. It never gets to a point where you're 100 percent happy with it. And after a little time done or out there in the world, your perception with it changes anyway.
That Thing You Do has always been on my favorite movies list! It’s just a good story and an overall fun watch! All I want from a movie watching experience!
That Thing You Do won me over immediately and may be my favorite Tom Hanks film. That scene where the kids first hear their song on the radio was so spot on that I could feel how they felt. It made me sad that the movie didn't get more attention and that Tom kind of wrote it off as a failure at the time. It's one that I like to go to once a year.
I had the vhs and soundtrack to That Thing You Do when when I was in middle school. I watched the movie and when it was done, I started it over again to listen to the music and learn the lyrics. I would fast forward through the movie part and so I could get to the songs. Then I saw the soundtrack at walmart and begged my mom for $3 so I could add it to the $4 I had and she let me get it. I had a little blue boom box in my room and I listened to it until I wore it out. I just realized how old this story makes me feel lol. I did this with a lot of movies, Lion King immediately comes to mind, I was a bit "different" growing up and was OBSESSED with all kinds of music - we sang in church 3 times a week, my dad too me to all sorts of bluegrass festivals and jam sessions, I love 90s country and early 2000s Ludcris. Anyway, I don't know what it was with the simple 60s inspired music in that movie but I loved it. This made me smile.
Road to Perdition is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and I have no idea why it never had much success. Great cast, great plot, amazing soundtrack, etc.
Also FWIW, I remember reading a story about Tom Hanks like 20 years ago in which Hanks said that at some point in late 80s, early 90s, Hanks was frustrated with his career so he talked with his management team about reconfiguring things. It was only after that, that he shot Philadelphia, went on a streak of great movies and became known as a serious actor. Before that, I think he was just specializing in light comedies. Anyway, the point is that Hanks definitely felt he had hit a career low at that time.
but that’s when he was young, and we don’t often call that career low, more like still climbing. But yeah, everyone at least one time in life, would feel down
That Thing You Do is my all-time favorite movie. I had the VHS when it came out, watched so many times we wore the tape out. That happened just in time for the DVD version to come out and also bought the Director's Cut.
I'm a musician and I have had so many moments that where from that thing you do ish Specially the scene where they're going crazy about being played on the radio. The movie will always have a place in my heart
My Uncle took Tom on a sail boat in Maui in the 80s and the conversation came up if he had any upcoming projects. Tom replied, "Well I can't tell you anything about the movie, all I know is it's gonna be really big."
"Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Slow down...this is Rock and Rock. It's not a Polka." Classic line (Steve Zahn) from the extended version of That Thing You Do! Great film.
That Thing You Do helped inspire me to make a life in music and guitar, which i am now going to college for and helped me find my identity and who I am. Thank you That Thing You Do.
That Thing You Do has a wonderful sheen of schmaltz that has always elevated it. It functions so much better as a band story than 99% of actual biopics do. It's really hard to not care about all the characters, and the damn song works (rip Adam Schlesinger).
That was really insightful. He knows the industry so well and can see these new trends that happen as accessibility to movie/tv has increased exponentially.
I knew TH was talented AF. I _didn't_ realize what a stunning raconteur he is. All this AND dropping a *cork-soaker* bomb with logarithmic precision. 😂
I enjoyed “that thing you do” when it came out. I saw it because it looked interesting. Not based on opinions. To each there own, but do not intentionally read reviews or ask others for their opinions. I watch what looks interesting and make my own mind up.
He makes a good point about how things age. Often things that worked at the time don't hold up, and things that didn't work find new life as culture evolves. Other types of films have this phenomenon, but it's super obvious with comedies
Hanx is one of those artists I feel I owe a debt I could never possibly repay. Some of this man's work has shaped the course of my entire life. That's not hyperbole. Tom, the best I can say is thank you!
"Larry Crowne" is my favorite Movie ..... Love watching it when I am feel down..... Always cheers me up .... Get yourself up, brush yourself off and start all over again!!!!
Bachelor Party was probably the most juvenile movie Hanks was in. That being said…. Hanks was great in Bachelor Party . In fact almost everyone was great in Bachelor Party. It was a fun movie .
Tom was in Mazes and Monsters, a made-for-TV movie that was part of the Satanic Panic. His character got brought into a game of Mazes and Monsters (obvious stand-in for Dungeons and Dragons) and then began to forget who he was and lost the distinction between himself and the character he played. The only movie I know that I would consider a "low" for Tom Hanks.
After watching this, I’m convinced that comedy. Tom is still somewhere in there. I desperately want him to make the funniest movie anybody’s seen this century and I think he’s still a comedian at Hart.
Theres nothing better then 80s Hanks. I enjoy most of his flicks but 80s Hanks is my favorite. I say it everywhere but I'll say it here, The Burbs is my favorite movie hands down.
If I ever got to meet Tom Hanks, I'd just ask him about my hometown. He always manages to swing by Angelo's and someone who enjoys a slice at a place I grew up walking distance from? Probably knows more hole in the wall spots that I've never heard of there that I should check out.
VHS changed the filmgoing experience radically. Movies once screened, originally vanished. If you did a remake 10 years later no one had the original to compare it to. And if you made a bad film, well, more than likely it vanished in your past.
Since Mr Hanks brought up Bosom Buddies, I saw a rerun about a year ago, flash back to their high school dance, and on the hall way wall, had a list of the football players, and I know I saw t Hanks, as QB, I then looked back on my rewind, Scolari was another player, and then I did further research on the names of the team, I found most names were in the credits at the end of the different players..
At the time of their release, I think we tend to compare movies as a competition between what else is released that year. When we watch an old movie, we weigh it on its own stand-alone merits. That Thing You Do is one of my favourite movies ever, one of a handful of movies I own on physical media, and one of the most Beatle-like non-Beatles tune.
That Thing You Do! is a great movie. My rule is if you have something even a little bit negative to say about Tom Hanks, I want absolutely nothing to do with you. This man is a national treasure!!!
Tom, I think "Joe Versus the Volcano" was a lovely feel good movie. Meg was so wonderful playing 3? different characters. I may be mistaken but was this not the launch of you and her in Rom-Coms.
By the way, "Here" is going to be a classic. It's a great movie, very moving, very deep, i will watch it over and over again. The American critics didn't get it, but just wait a few years... (in France, they love it). I think the subtext of that part of the interview speaks exactly of that.
My fav performance is his guest appearance on Taxi at Harvard as a stoner when Jim is totally clean and straight A student and then the brownie turns for him.
Tom has won Oscars, but it will for me forever, forever be.... Batchelor Party. That was one of the first rental VHS we watched at it was a hilarious event, the movie, all watching, brilliant. It was not a movie, it was, in that moment, a happening.
That thing you do was the first song I learned on the guitar. Song was so damn catchy and it still holds up today! I lived that movie in real life. I owe that movie a lot cuz it made me the musician I am today! And The Beatles! 😂
there are a few of them. His new movie that he's promoting and has done the media rounds for is a definite low. The circle was terrible. Bonfire of the vanities, Inferno and pinocchio
Conan please tell Tom that That Thing You Do needs a 4K UHD release. The current Blu-Ray uses an outdated transfer and looks awful. We need a fresh scan of the original negative.
"That Thing You Do" is a great movie for non-musicians because it shows you JUST how many times you have to hear a song after you've created it. People wonder why Radiohead stopped playing Creep for a long time and why Nirvana hated Smells Like Teen Spirit. That Thing You Do is a GREAT SONG, but by the end of the movie, you've probably heard it enough times. Now multiply times 35 years for Aerosmith singing "Dream On" and you can understand why, even though it's beloved by the fan base .. you never really want to hear it again.
I'm pretty sure an English person saying "not half bad" is expressing wild enthusiasm. If Tom's career did have a low point it was "Mazes & Monsters" but that was very early on.
That Thing You Do was my favorite movie in high school. It's still one of my go-to movies when I just want something fun.

I saw that movie as a kid at a drive in theater and I've loved it ever since
When I drive past a store after hours, and see their sign still on, i always think of Guy Patterson's dad
That thing you do, made my son so interested in music and drums that the kid became an expert. It’s a great show.
that's onederful
Same thing happened to me! Now I teach That Thing You Do on drums to my students. Makes me so happy to hear when a 6 yo is "obsessed" with it now!
It's love how much Tom Hanks reminds me of David Letterman. "Hold on to your quarters, Jasper!"

My music teacher showed my class "That Thing You Do" in middle school. Still listen to the song! Thanks, Adam Schlesinger.
Adam sadly fell victim to COVID during the pandemic at a relatively young age. Excellent songwriter
Joe vs. The Volcano is one of his most underappreciated performances, and still one of my favourite films! ❤

I still make references to a "brain cloud" for people that really know.

Such an American icon. I’m 45 and cannot remember a time in my life without seeing Tom Hanks on a screen. Living legend of the highest order.
Absolutely 👍
Don’t idolize celebrities
The directors cut of that thing you do is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time
as a drummer i naturally liked that thing you do. my old boss supplied 3 drum sets for the movie and legend has it that tom kept one of the kits.
