I always notice whether the guest does this and I can always tell with just the audio. It matters! He's always seemed like such a legitimately cool dude.
Hanks has always been better as himself in interviews than in movies, where he's usually an insufferably unfunny shouter. (Once you pick up on it you can't unhear it).
The relief that Tom Hanks shows at 11:40 betrays just how much of a pro he is. And how much he's trying to be game with whatever bit is going on around him. He was working hard to make something out of the dark path that that Mussolini and Hitler stuff was going, when Conan gave him the out by saying "I'm gonna switch gears here"
I think another thing that's great about this interview is that they're not "on", they're just having a personal conversation. At 1:49, Hanks asks "Are we on yet?" and Conan says "No." Then at 2:12, Conan: "Why can't we use this?!" and Hanks: "You can! Go ahead, go ahead, we're using it." This must have been recorded during sound check or something, it was just them having a conversation until Hanks said to use it.
I absolutely loved Cloud Atlas. It is my favorite Tom Hanks movie. It was profound so sorry it was lost in the vast movie universe. Love you Tom and Conan!
@@michaelkupfer3723It’s ok if you don’t get it. You really need to pay attention to see its brilliance. The point is to follow souls through time and appreciate the irony of what happens when the end world reverts back to the state of the beginning.
Love this podcast. Great guests. Conan has fun, but he also knows when the stfu and let his guests do their thing. Only quibble -- I wish you'd post the entire podcast in addition to the chunks. I'd listen to an hour or 90 minutes without hesitation.
If anyone that runs this channel happens to read this - one small suggestion? - Can you make chapters in the timeline for the commercials? It's a hassle to scrub/guess where it ends manually. @@michaelkupfer3723 It means "getting women" but it's kind of an old fashioned, crude, expression making reference to the actual, down there, 'lady parts.'
Didn’t think you could eclipse Conan’s top five guests. Well, there’s a new #1 and it’s Tom Hanks. Absolutely enjoyable regardless of topic. His energy, articulation, humor and pure authenticity sets the standard. Wow. 😊
Lmao! @ 3:02 The way Tom says “He had a podcast, for a while” about Jerry Lewis was so in the moment and effortlessly funny. And the way he repeats and laughs at Matt’s joke about Hitler “Still pullin in the trim” was hilarious.
So many of Conan's friends/interviewees have commented that they're neighbors with him, and with major real estate purchases always being in the press, it's become pretty open knowledge that they all live in Pacific Palisades. It seems to be the place to live if you're wealthy, but also want to live in 'suburbia.'
This is important. These men are titans, the best to ever to do it in their respective fields. And they are accessible, affable, hilarious, normal, down to earth, eventual billionaires.
You think your Neighborhood has a dark History? I'm from Berchtesgaden here in Germany. Now go look that up haha! Though i must admit that History especially brought and still brings countless of American Tourists here since forever, which helps all of our small Businesses, especially Family-owned to stay alive! Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps!
Oh my god the fact that Jerry Lewis invented the video tap, such an important innovation in filmmaking, but couldn't actually use it because he was too busy being goofy in front of the camera is hilarious
Oh man, I wish they had like 3 hours for this show. Because at the end of it Tom Hanks just didn’t want it to end. They need this to be at least an hour and thirty minutes.
11:00 Matt Gourley at a job interview in Summer 2018, "Listen, if you need a reliable, professional mid-century dork to hang out on your podcast for six years, and then drop an old colloquial euphemism for women's genitals so out of place that it makes Tom Hanks pause and blush, I'm your man!" The he touched his phone and Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" played as everyone in the room just sort of sat there and listened.
This is hysterical. Not only because I grew up in tinseltown, and grok its bizarre juxtapositions, but also because their goofball Nazi humor is so Mel Brooks -and we just don’t get that much nowadays.😂
You know, I think about how awesome Tom Hanks is, what a great guy he must be, but then I think about Chet Hanks and that A) Tom named his son Chet and B) Tom raised a son to BE Chet. Like….man. What happened there?
If you look at how down to earth his other son, Colin, is, I think it's really a matter of when Tom got all his fame and money. His first kids came up when he was broke and struggling, so they're more grounded because they lived like pretty regular people for their childhoods. He married Rita (who also seems very cool) and then his celebrity exploded. So those second set of kids never knew anything but unlimited wealth and opportunity, and Chet's admitted he's the black sheep of the family. His parents had sent him to camp for troubled teens, and he was addicted to cocaine for a long time. And side point, Chet's real name is "Chester" :) Which goes along with his brother's name of Truman, so they might be named for historical figures 🤷
In the 30s those camps were all over the country. Here in Wisconsin there was one just outside of Milwaukee. We have a large German immigrant population. Hitler did actually own a thousand acres in Colorado at one time.
People forget Tom Hanks started on a sitcom in which he dressed in drag in order to hit on women in a ladies-only apartment building. He also did Bachelor Party which featured a donkey that ODs on drugs at the party. He is NOT some stodgy dramatic thespian. He is a comedic actor through and through.
It's subtle, but Hanks makes a real effort to regularly face Gourley and Sona to be sure they feel included in the conversation.
Anytime someone does this, they are automatically my favorite guest :)
It always annoys me when someone doesn't acknowledge them. It says a lot about a person IMO.
Yeah I appreciate that. Like Matt said recently, some guests talk to the whole room. I get the impression it's something Tom does naturally.
I always notice whether the guest does this and I can always tell with just the audio. It matters! He's always seemed like such a legitimately cool dude.
I noticed this too and it says a lot about the guest wanting to include everyone in the conversation. Tom Hanks seems like such a likeable guy.
It never ceases to amaze me how hilarious Tom Hanks is when he's off the cuff and has the space to cook. This episode has me in stitches
It shows he was a standup comedian before he was an actor

Can you talk normal? What the hell is the man cooking? Smh and how many stitches did you get from your injury 🤕?
There is a good reason Tom Hanks has been a star for 40 years. More charisma than he knows what to do with - fantastic to watch this two talk.
"Pulling in the trim" 😂😂
wtf does that even mean lmao
"Good ol' Addie!" 🤣🤣🤣

Conan will always be the best host for interviews. Every guest he has you can feel them relax around Conan and actually enjoy being there!

I think another thing that's great about this interview is that they're not "on", they're just having a personal conversation. Conan, your hair looks phenomenal in this. Almost lifelike. Whatever you're doing with, keep it up.
Tom Hanks is one of Conan's best guests!
So many great lines, but Gourley “pulled” out a win in this round. 😂🤣😂
The second Tom blurted out "Mambananaab", I knew Rainbolt had everything he needed to pin that address.
His speaking style sounds so much like Andy Richter for some reason!
I never realized that, but it's true! They both talk very creamy.
Yes I couldn't help but hear Andy the entire time
Lest we forget.... Tom Hanks gave Conan the nickname "Coco". :)
I have the feeling that the first time it was uttered was not on air. Maybe yelled out the window during a drive-by bit.
YES! I was just thinking about this as I was scrolling through the comments. I recall that episode.
Gourley's line about the trim is probably one of the most genuinely shocking things I've heard on the podcast Hahaha.
This episode was a delight. I listened to it twice.
Still pulling in the trim. Gold.
It took a dark turn and stayed hilarious.
