My gf was an extra on Charlie Wilson's War. It was right around Christmas when they filmed. On one of the last days of filming Tom Hanks came out as Santa Claus and handed out presents to the extras. Class act.

YES! That scene shook me, caught me off guard and made me cry. Some of the best acting I have ever seen - the transition from being a hostage with his guard up and the trauma of having witnessed his captor shot in the head by a sniper, to being safe, taken care of and completely vulnerable again.
You´re so right. I always tell people to watch this scene in order to understand how great of an actor Tom Hanks really is. By the way, the nurse wasn´t an actress, but a real life Navy nurse, who was told to just act as if this was a real situation.

That's funny. I've been a death metal vocalist since 1995 and I always have people flip out because I'm on stage performing and I'm a complete madman and as soon as I'm off stage I'm all smiles and I hug everyone that comes up to me. Hahahaha

I was an extra on Castaway and Hanks was always chatting up the extras on breaks during the filming of the crowd scene when Chuck returns to FedEx. He asked us how long we had been with the company and what we did, was never unapproachable and was very laidback. When they called action it was incredible to watch him go from a guy that was just leading the singing of happy birthday to an extra into a character that had just spent years on a deserted island and was trying to navigate being back to a place where people had moved on with their lives thinking he was dead.
They are just as likely to face real danger as your regular person, as they leave their house and hop in the car and exist in the public eye just like anybody else does. In fact probably more so, because all it takes is one crazy obsessed person to stalk them and do God knows what

Hanks is a fascinating story teller, and that scene he described is such a classic one. No wonder it came out so well! I am the captain now.
