  • For the past few years, the collective motorcycling world has lost its minds with the Ducati Panigale V4. Lost in the hoopla of the Ducati V4 engine sat the lowly 959 Panigale, a pleasant and capable machine, it serves as a gentle reminder to everyone that Ducati hadn’t completely abandoned the V-Twin. It’s a little funny to think Ducati’s lower-displacement sportbike, at 955cc, is now larger than it’s former legendary flagship, the 916 family.
Nonetheless here we are, and with the 2020 Ducati Panigale V2, Bologna is taking its last V-Twin sportbike and giving it a substantial makeover in several areas, except for one - the 955cc Superquaddro V-Twin.

People seem to forget, that the 916 race version that was competing against 750cc inline 4's was bored out to 955cc 90* twin. So if the GSX-R750 is the ballpark of your super-mids, then a 955cc twin with ~150bhp is on par historically. People tend to forget those kind of details apparently, even in the journalist side of things.

    • @AT2Productions

@Phil Doherty The US-specific SPS model had the 955cc engine from the showroom. Also, for most of the life of the 916/996/998 model line, the engine capacity in the showroom and on track matched, just like their 750cc 4-cylinder brethren. Another commonality, the bikes were detuned for the street to varying degrees, ALL of them. That isn't nearly the case now.
      So where was I wrong?

@Andy: totally agree: this reviews all look the same to mee (not to disregard the effort the reviewers put on them) but they all are "the bike turns great, the brakes are great, it gets fast great, it has a trizillion electronic aids... blah blah blah... " and, if you don't see the video and just listen to the audio, the review could be 99% switched with any other modern super bike review, so, yeah: just choose the one that makes you smile, the one that won't get you broke, the one you want to keep for a while: the rest doesn't matter, unless you are a pro rider which almost any of us, watching youtube video reviews, are not! (if you are, then no, I'm not talking about you! :)

Grateful for the honest review, its a beautiful bike for sure but I recently picked up a 2018 R1 heavily discounted for less and its a peach on track and sledgehammer for the street. The additional $1,000 investment I made, gave it 180PH rear HP tune and better brake pads and still considerably cheaper than the Ducati. I know its all overkill and I am content with much less HP and performance but still, so cool to have. I have ridden the 2019 959 and its stellar and looks the business but the R1 is a refined thrasher IMO. Its all good, enjoy your ride and watch for those 701's buzzing around the outside of the turn.

Nice review. Personally I love this bike, it's the Ducati V-twin equivalent of a GSXR750. I guess by today's standards it has mid level sport performance. I also don't think people put enough emphasis on brand, performance & engine configuration preferences etc. If I want a Ducati V2 with "mid" level performance, I obviously don't want a 200bhp Honda, i4, for example. The i4 litre bikes are completely different animals & not really comparable to this as a riding experience regardless of cost imo.

Rage Rider exactly. I’m Going to be buying a v2 and I’m coming off of a ninja 650. I wanted the tech and looks of the v4 but I don’t want that much power yet. This bike is like a miracle for me, cross shopping it with Japanese 1000s isn’t an option for me and shouldn’t be for anyone wanting this bike. Different cup of tea

@@austinjones8701 100% agreed! I would pick this over the V4 or an i4 & it's got nothing to do with money as I can't afford either lol. The V2 just makes so much more sense to me on every level. I also reckon you'd probably be faster with the V2 on the road & it would definitely be more rewarding as you can use more of it more of the time. Have fun, I'm jealous. ; )

Rage Rider thank you so much! And I 1000% agree with what you’re saying, this bike would be a lot more fun on the road with a better powerband. And I know it’s cliche but it adds character to the bike having a twin. Being short this bike fits me perfectly, the power is manageable, the sport bars are not too crazy uncomfortable and the seat looks cushy. It burns fuel like crazy. Even with the comfort seat, your ass will hurt for sure. You need to keep moving during riding. For sure you need to train your bike shape. It s a different thing. I bought a brand new V2 fully customed like a year ago as my first bike. The power is ridiculous. Around 200 kg with 155 hp, you can imagine. In 5th gear around 8 to 10k rpms, the acceleration is thrilling. The electronics give you full control. You need to use your common sense though.

When I look at this bike bike I just don't feel it. Performance and function of these Panigale bikes are phenomenal, but when it comes to looks I feel none of their products beat that old trellis frame (916!!!) and under the seat dual cans. If I lived on the track, I'd grab one of these in a heart beat. For now I'll stick with my 848. It performs well and looks much more badass and definitely sexier than this (plus it came in black). To each his own.

You forgot the Ducati is better as an overall bike than the Japanese ones though. Just something to think of. Yamaha R1 super high gearing...90mph in 1st gear. Honda Fireblade is even worse. The V2 is more comfortable (gasp on a Duke??). ore usable for most people (and yes that means anyone who isn't Mic Doohan). Sexy too. I'm tossing around all the bikes right now. V4 too, Aprillia, R1M. This seems to be the sweet spot for the street and track honestly.

Omar M Khalil it’s in the same race class as a gsxr 750. So go buy a gsxr 750 and add a full color display, auto shifter up and down and a 6-axis imu and maybe even a single sided swing arm. Then upgrade the brakes and suspension to v2 spec. Now add it all up and let me know what it cost to have a bike much uglier with the same specs. 😀

Austin Jones im not saying the quality of the Ducati is not up there, its one of the best clearly.. but its interesting that you forgot how much ducati charge for their 4 piston equivalent. I mean take the ducati and upgrade it with a 4 cylinder inline screamer (not a 2 cylinder than maxes out at 9k) and let me know how much that costs. Ps, why did you bring up that specific suzuki bike instead of an equivalent honda or yamaha? Is it because your argument wouldnt make sense? Hmm

Austin Jones ps. I dont care about a full color display on a sports bike, i dont care about an auto shifter, I dont buy a bike to drive it in auto, I hate the paddle shifters on my sports car. I dont care about most of the stuff you put as “conditions”, I care about the overall package, when you add up the sum of parts, how does the bike handle? How much does it weigh? How much power does it make? What does it rev upto? How reliable is the engine? How much will it cost to keep it on the road? You make that Ducati meet the Yamaha or the Honda in those departments then come tell me how much its costs then.

@@andir2185 I know this sounds a little insane but the previous generation of the S1000RR (2015 through 2019) in Rain Mode are extremely docile bikes. They're easier to maneuver in traffic than the Ducati's I've ridden and have a few more creature comforts that I never thought I'd need, use or even want. I had a hiatus of many years and got a 2016 S1000RR three years ago and chose it over the other sports bikes because of the seating position and that it was just easier to ride.
A great video from Nate Kern - it's a few minutes long and a response to your question can be found right at the 5 minute mark:
      ruclips.net/video/LQcC0Kf1ptI/видео.html
All of the video is worth a watch and it highlights the features of the then new 2010 S1000RR model. The 2015 model is just a major update with features taken from the HP4 (depending on the package). The latest 2019/20 model is all new.
For me a sports bike has to do two jobs: 1. make you feel safe and 2. be fun. If the bike feels like it's up to the job, especially if it makes riding easier and more comfortable then the second part is more likely to happen. First step is to go sit on a bunch of bikes and see how you feel on them. Even though the differences in saddle height and geometry are not hugely different, an R1 felt like I needed yoga lessons and required me to lose 20lbs otherwise my testicles may be mushed into my kidneys. Dukes were about the same but the seat height felt higher - and I have a 34" inseam. Yes, I should be covering the rear brake and stopping the bike and holding it up on one leg but I'm an older fart and my right hip is fuckola'd from other shenanigans, so it's the two feet down and it's a stretch on those bikes. The higher bars on the S1000RR and lower seat, for me, make it a bike I can go do 400 miles on in a day in the Sierra and not hate life. Those end of day freeway sessions are where cruise control is worth it's weight in gold. Heated grips 8700ft up Ebbetts Pass. For the f**king Win. Speaking of goodies, I will never buy another bike that requires the use of the clutch other than starting off and stopping. The gear shift assist pro is awesome, clutchless shifts with auto rev-matching gear changes. If you commute with a backpack or ride in traffic in town, it's another thing that's just more relaxing, as well as being a performance enhancement. That said, I would recommend you learn how to change gears manually because at some point you may need too.
The key to things like Rain Mode isn't the fact that it just reduced power but the electronic throttle is reprogrammed in each mode and the power delivery is changed because of that. It's like turning the accelerator 1/4 of a turn and getting 1/8th of the throttle opening. Get to 1/2 a twist and you're not even at 1/3rd throttle - but the end comes on quick, a bit like an increasing exponential curve. 1st and 2nd gear do not give full torque, so you get a nice little surprise even in Rain Mode when you hit 3rd. Rain Mode also has the 'get out of jail card most of the time' feature for the ABS braking. It doesn't let the back wheel come up off the deck so you can squeeze that front brake for all you're worth and it'll maximize front braking, keep the rear wheel on the deck and also actuate the rear brake. With the rear wheel down you can still steer the bike, when the rear wheel is in the air you're a passenger ontop of 450lbs of fun that you have no immediate directional control over. I commute in Rain Mode just for this reason when lane splitting on I-80. Once every few months there'll be that one guy that thinks he needs to illegally move in the HOV lane when traffic isn't moving and the limits of 35mph to 0mph braking are tested. It's passed with flying colors every single time. Other than the wedding tackle feeling more of the tank than I'd like and my inner thighs getting a workout from the big squeeze, it's almost like a non-event. If I'd performed the same braking technique on my old FZR1000-EXUP I'd be wondering how much higher the back wheel was than the front and how many mili-seconds it'd be before my seat pushed my ass into the back of that car. Of course on that bike I'd brake a little differently but it'd be a much more raw experience and one that would probably not end well from time to time. For me, as insane as the engine is, it's the brakes and the associated electronics that are just stupendous.
But make no mistake, whilst it can be tamed, things will head south very quickly if you make silly errors like making a sharp left turn a bit quick and accidentally grabbing a hand full of throttle or just being a fool and going too hard. Even a 10hp bike can be a death trap when ridden stupidly.
There is a saying that "you can't fix stupid" well, you can. You put stupid on a supersports bike in any mode and let stupid go for a ride. Stupid will be nicely contained in a 6ft plywood bed and well and truly fixed.
This guy waffles on a bit but you'll get the idea:
      ruclips.net/video/Jx7OIQ9skyg/видео.html
Get the bike you like, get a good set of leathers or similar gear, boots, gloves and helmet and take a bunch of courses. I personally like the new format courses based on the Total Control books rather than the basic MSF style. You're taught counter steering on the first day and if you don't have a bike and have to loan one for the course because you really are a new rider, that's a pretty big deal. Many riders will ride for many years and say counter steering isn't a real thing. Yeah...
Never stop learning and never stop having fun.

@@GMak81 Yeah GMak, we get where you're coming from on this, but it isn't the same thing as a different 'mode'.
If Rossi can have different modes on his MotoGP bike depending on the conditions, then we can have them on our road bikes too. Having a throttle that's mapped differently is way different from having the skill to feather the throttle nice and slowly. That's the difference between a 170hp race bike and an S1000RR in Rain Mode. The race bike will put a beginner on their ass real quick where as the S1000RR in Rain Mode will be docile until you get to stupid rpms.

That’s why the Daytona 675r was a triple and was still in the 600 race class. This bike is nowhere near underpowered for its class. It’s a 750 class not a 1000 class. But yeah, you’re right, it’s slow asf.
