I feel like some people in the music industry squeeze artists like oranges until they are on their 30's. It's also disgusting how some bad press promotes mediocre stuff when there are lots of better artists out there... (That's quite nasty)
The heartbreak of believing its anything but a blood suck. When I got my deal with LAVA I put a 10 grand roll in my pocket. Thought I was "On My Way" Then because of mere jealousy I was canned. Even though I produced that act to get it were it was I was the first one to go. Not only did Lava soon dump them because they couldn't keep it together, they also owed Sharron O, 75 grand and did NOT own their songs anymore to start over. Not having me was the final nail. Not only are greedy people stupid, They are dangerous. They had it all and let ego piss it all away. A studio eng told me that they wound up sleepen in a garage in Las Vegas Or a van down by the river or some shit Me? I'm On top of the world. My path was to just experience the madness and not be taken by it.. See my Icon? Now I use my talents to promote life and the gift of it. Not to get blow jobs Whores and Cocaine. I'm so glad I missed all that. Oh I kept the ten grand. That was the year 2000. NOW I HAVE THE POWER!!!! MUHA HA HAAAA!!! I can NOT BE CANCELED and THE PARTY CONTINUES. You will not tour and be happy.
i would absolutely love a video with rufus taylor, talking about his upbringing by one of the most legendary drummers, becoming his own musician and the darkness stories!!!!
Jenny May Finn is intensely insightful and balanced providing context and margins for some real free-wheelin' shootin' from the hip observations and comments, great producer for this channel
To quote Hunter S Thompson…“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.
I love how you two interact. You just have such a nice, complementary sort of way of being. I completely lost the thread of what this was supposed to be about though 😂 however I dont think its just musicians that can be "married to their craft" to the extent their partners need to almost accept their craft as another partner. I think anyone who is pasaionate about what they do should spend time on their passion. Its then important to make sure any other peraon you bring into your life is aware of it so they dont get any sort of surprises.
The worst thing about the music industry? The worst thing is the collection of aspects of the industry that have helped contribute to this (partial) list: Billie Holiday, Prince, Phil Lynott, Michael Hutchence, Bon Scott, Nick Drake, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Ian Curtis, Naomi Judd, Chester Bennington, Dee Dee Ramone, Whitney Houston, Elliot Smith, Tom Petty, and so many more musicians whose names and music most of us will never know Thank you, JHRA, for everything y'all do to show your care for musicians and music lovers, including all the care y'all share right here on your channel. That care helps, at least a little, keep that list as short as possible
Justin; this channel, these videos, J&J long form delights, you and your art just gives me life. Another fantastic video/chat!! A sincere thank you, Justin & Jenny, for being flashlights for us all in the darkness of these days.
This was amazing. As a 54 year old retired session player and touring freelance musician, all of this is dead on. I’m at a point in my life now where I no longer need to tour, but I still do various on call album sessions. I have no desire or need to go on the road again. It is the shittiest of business filled with the shittiest of people. This, in turn, causes the artists to act like headhunting predators. In the 90’s I could feel it slowly getting much worse. Nowadays, the only way you can make a legit living is by being on the road for months. I was lucky enough to be in the industry before streaming and downloading took over and it became the ugly monster it is now. I feel terrible for young artists trying to make it these days. It’s a true nightmare.
That was fucking amazing, seriously that was one of the greatest, most open hearted podcasts I've ever listened to. The podcasts are always brilliant but this one goes to a whole new level, my mind is blown.
This was an amazing episode! I took my sleep gummies so hope it makes sense but I love people just being REAL. We’re surrounded by fake crap as entertainment and that is so boring and so much is fake happy. Watching two friends discussing their experiences when you’ve gone through it yourself (not musician but cheating/ending marriage). And to top it off the experience of a rock star, and I know Justin has so much emotional intelligence anyway but still seeing the other side of it. I hope people watch these because they’re so engaging and getting better especially as Jennie is coming out of her shell (don’t get self conscious now!) and I’m like it’s hard to find a connection like this especially between opposite sex and one hasn’t fallen for the other. The press days are totally understandable. Having done both extremely high pressure job and one where I rarely had to do any work…that boring job was hell as the work was the same thing repeatedly was like time went backwards, I felt less intelligent. Now imagine talking trying to pretend your answer is fresh I’d start to go crazy. No, it’s not like nursing at all, of course that’s a hell of a lot more important and physical, and there’s no comparison but I can see press days can bore tf out of people. Always happy and smiling.
Oh guys ! 🥹so sorry you’ve both been let-down by love ❤️ 😢I can taste what you are talking about . I can recommend turning 50 🎂when the hormones diminish and you begin to appreciate all the other things in life that you never noticed because romance 💘 got in the way . All I need now is my dog 🐶and my piano🎹 Sending you both big hugs 🤗 xxx👩🏻💕
It's so wonderful hearing you both open up about relationships and everything. I just wanted to say that this has been my favourite episode of any. I look forward to your chats together. For what it's worth, I look at both Jenny and Justin as wonderful people who I admire. It's so insightful to hear about their past partners treating them badly. It's easy to assume that people who you see as wonderful only get loved and admired. I just wouldn't expect it. I'd expect people to value you both. But, of course, it happens to everyone I suppose.
This was a fabulous episode, once again Justin and Jenny May! I can empathise with the emotionally checking out part of a relationship. My ex was a music journalist and he definitely had his next/current girlfriend lined up well before we had split. When I've dated musicians in the past, I have always had a pretty good experience with most of them. Distance has been the only issue. Having said that, when you date people in the music trade, you have to know what you're getting into from the outset. Time, distance and energy is sometimes taken up elsewhere. I reckon though, successful relationships are about heatlhy compromise and trust and respect, so if that is the basis of the relationship, I would be confident of all those other factors not being so bad. Also, I don't handle chaos at all well! I freeze with the stress of it. An immovable force until the wave of chaos crashes over me and passes by! I am the queen of routine....stodgy Taurus lady is me. Great work, once again legends! I loved this episode. x
Another excellent podcast, you two! I relate to the needing to be in a quiet space before a show. It helps so much. I'm a pacer, ha ha! I'm heartened by your humanity, Justin, all wrapped up in that prickly exterior.
not musical, nor in the music trade, yet here i am enjoying Justin's highly specific content about precisely those things. The guy's a great communicator!
This really has to be my favourite video so far! ❤ Perhaps this is why musicians often date other musicians? probably because they understand what being a musician is about and can even get creative together or have the understanding of the space needed to practice or create ?….but then again that in itself doesn’t always work. 😂 As someone who sat home patiently while my ex was out gigging, while I brought up a baby, sat back on my music career to support him doing what he loved, only to realise some girl was blowing up his ego each gig. They had an emotional affair, he checked out before our son was a year old, I think I checked out the minute I realised he’d been being a dick. He left me with a 13 month old baby! Best thing that’s ever happened to me now 💫🤘🏻 I look back and laugh because I remember us doing a duel guitar solo video, which went viral on Facebook as I knew the band we were covering - most of the comments were omg I’d love a girlfriend to shred with, but in one of the comments someone said something like “I wonder how they would work in a band together”? I thought they had a really good point because it’s about team work and band chemistry and if someone’s ego gets in the way, it can be disastrous. It’s all balance isn’t it?! I love you guys chatting about your relationships. What you were saying Justin about it going either way is so true. I could have been sat home entertaining someone else, but what would the point have been in that? Instead I supported my ex’s gigging lifestyle, sat back full well knowing it would be something I’d get back into when the kids were older and wanted to let him shine. Just goes to show that it was all out of balance. Much growth always comes out of such situations though and huge amounts of gratitude. After all, isn’t this all part of the rich tapestry we call life? Experiencing these kinds of things… All the best to you both! Can’t wait to hear more of these chats! 🤘🏻
The entire first half of One Way Ticket is flawless. Dinner Lady Arms, what a tune ❤ Your emotional cheating episodes reminds me of it happening to me by an ex gf 4 years ago when, similar to what Jenny was talking about, she kept going on about a guy she worked with and, no kidding, she actually asked me if she could go to Japan with him 🙈. I obviously ended it after that but never held it against her and genuinely wish her well and hope she’s happy (she had a shitty upbringing being passed around multiple foster parents). I guess it’s always a little gratifying to know you were right. Great ep as ever guys!
Really, really nice episode. The two of you blend so well together during great conversation. Justin so Adorable and Jenny May so Lovely. This made my afternoon at work very enjoyable. Yes, I did get work done lol, probably more than normal because it was so pleasant. I could listen for hours. A wonderful chat! Thanks very much.😊
I love the outro for this one! I really like the abyss part. When I’m writing words on a piece of paper, that blank sheet feels like an abyss to fill. 😊
Another smashing episode! Wasn’t expecting you guys to go into your past relationships based on the topic… but thank you for being so candid! Brought me back to a time when I went through the same thing you did… but listening to you both share so openly made up for it! Until the next episode, stay well!
Love all of these podcasts, particularly the ones with Jenny, as everyone keeps saying - she is so insightful and astute and the dynamic between you is really relaxed and easy, she can ask interesting and challenging questions and get thoughtful responses in an effortless way. I also love all the off-topic stuff, the ‘ramblings’ are the best bits! The relationship musings in particular; sorry to hear some of that, must have been hard at the time but you both seem to be over these things and able to look back without bitterness which is great ❤
Thats fantastic!! my wife looks after kids with issues all day.. but i still think she comes home to me as a challenge!! musicians... we are hard to look after!! x
One Way Ticket to Hell and Back is one of my favourite albums by The Darkness. I just love how the music sounds in each of the songs. I do love all of the music by The Darkness. ❤
this is the best podcast yet! the cheating ex's, justin's thoughts on his previous albums, frank skinner and the serial rapist alert were all excellent bits
I remember seeing an interview with Kings of Leon back in the day, and they were dissing The Darkness. Think the interviewer was comparing both bands as they had a 'retro vibe', and then they said, 'no we're not a novelty act like them (or something like that). Now they suck, unlike The Darkness who still kick ass!
Did you know I do not own, downloaded, watched on RUclips, or even listened to a song in Spotify by Justin’s band and yet isn’t the gentleman and JMF just awesome to watch- it was also good to see JMF agreeing with me o. How well she works better with bigger personality’s than her being a personality
Loved the improvised outro with that delicate harmonics🤩, regardless it was for illustrating purposes...and the fretboard was clearly visible!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Nice!!!🫶🏻
15:18 that cut to the Lorraine interview 😂 I was also surprised by the reactions, thought it was charming! Justin's right in thinking that's their problem. We're always surrounded by unnatural behaviour in media. That's not good for us.
Man, I love League of Gentlemen. I live in Aus and whenever I talk about it, people think I’m talking about The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, so I love seeing references to it.
Excellent! I'm loving the Justin & Jenny show, especially the well timed pauses😁 Thankyou you lot for your delightfully down to earth honesty, it's refreshingly reassuring amidst a vapid sea of shallow b.s. Thankyou for bravely sharing your stories of woe, even though it was sad to hear. But for the love of god, Justin- get yourself some paw-paw ointment for the dry lips (Lucas brand if you can get it) -it will change your life😅 Re. the Abyss (not the movie one) I see it as like the pure potentiality of the universe, kind of a spiritual chaos realm from which all creativity/art emerges. Or some such thing. Keep on rocking!🙌🏻
Great chat, guys. Great questions, Jenny May. Would of gladly listen to you 2 talk for another hour on this topic. Motorheart is up there with your best work, Justin. Not far behind the first record. Imo!
Always love these chats between Justin and Jenny! I also enjoy that Justin doesn’t give a fuck and puts lipgloss on throughout 😂 Unpolished is the best.
@43:48 Pretty close about the original meaning of chaos meaning wide open empty space or gaping abyss, the beginning of our current usage comes from the Vulgate translation of the book of Genesis and rather than nothing it's meaning is more along the lines of the formless initial state of the universe, which then in turn became the chaos of highly disordered systems like weather patterns or complex Brownian motion. I don't know that the word chaos has any connection the concept of zero, I could be wrong.
I found very interesting your example about press and manipulation. I studied (looong time ago) History in the University. One of the subjets was about the way historical persons were shown in the articles and piece of news. This thing that you has shown, simply to put a photo by the side of a negative headline is a very usual technique. They use it when they want to denigrate someone. An the worse thing is that it works really well. I have a lot of things to comment, but i have to hang my dog... Loved the episode!❤
Enjoying the podcast!😄 and also I'm on cloud 9 as I finally have all the installments of my precious merch!!! You were right Justin, coffee tastes much better in my Ultimug!!!☕️ Thanks!!!😉
Ohh! I'd also want to remark the fantastic ergonomics of the Ultimug handle (even KCIII could fit his entire fingers in it🤣). Not all mugs are as comfy as it's this!!!👍 Cheers!!!
Was so fucking fascinating to learn that he lives in the same country as me and actually seems to have an understanding of our country. I'm addicted to these podcasts and I haven't listened to the Darkness before.
Hi Justin. How does it work on the business side when band members leave and are replaced. Also when there have been many changes over the years when does the band stop being the band if you know what I mean?🤔
Hi Justin, Its a good point you raise. Is it your job to talk on telly? I have often wondered why tv get actors, musicians and the like on and then ask random questions about politics, life, etc when it's not their skillset neccesssarily or what they want to do. Much better to get them on tv to do something they want to do and are good at, like playing a great guitar solo.
What's the worst thing about the music industry in your opinion?
I feel like some people in the music industry squeeze artists like oranges until they are on their 30's. It's also disgusting how some bad press promotes mediocre stuff when there are lots of better artists out there... (That's quite nasty)

You will not tour and be happy.
Definitely that it’s an industry.
I can see why Jenny is Justin’s producer. She’s astute, perceptive and obviously very intelligent. The conversation is brilliant between them.
Yes, brilliant is what I was going to say! It truly is.😊
If the Darkness solved mysteries, she'd be their Velma.
What a fantastic comparison!
She is also part therapist I could sure use a Jenny
ikr. how old is she? she only looks about 26.
i would absolutely love a video with rufus taylor, talking about his upbringing by one of the most legendary drummers, becoming his own musician and the darkness stories!!!!

Love him😂
Legend 🥸
My laptop wallpaper for the 15 years I traversed the trench.
I could thrive there now. Anything is easy once you know how.
“I like to observe before I strike” - absolutely diabolical 😂 BRILLIANT!! 👏
I like Jenny. She's very polite and thoughtful but still knows how to push Justin's buttons and advance the dialog.
Jenny definitely gets the award for cosiest jumper
I love how you two interact. You just have such a nice, complementary sort of way of being. Thank you! These J&J podcasts have been my favorite episodes. The intellect. The whimsy. The humbleness. Yous have me smiling entire time.
Thanks so much J, appreciate it x
I dont think this guy is Humble ! Seeing is response against the black dude !
What dude?
Justin; this channel, these videos, J&J long form delights, you and your art just gives me life. Another fantastic video/chat!!
A sincere thank you, Justin & Jenny, for being flashlights for us all in the darkness of these days.
ALSO THE OUTRO SOLO! 👏
Sleep gummies. You got stoned then😅
This was amazing. As a 54 year old retired session player and touring freelance musician, all of this is dead on. Jenny May Finn Rides Again! Oh and Justin is also there. XD
Love these long-form videos with Jenny!
I could watch Jenny talk all day.
Agreed! Jenny’s look is everything. 😊
That was fucking amazing, seriously that was one of the greatest, most open hearted podcasts I've ever listened to. The podcasts are always brilliant but this one goes to a whole new level, my mind is blown.
My new ring tone is Jenny saying "your so big" on a loop ..lol.. you guys make my soul smile.
Love this - the podcast episodes are getting better and better

Didn't want this session to end thank you both. Brilliant.
Great episode! The moment when Justin realized he booked one room cracked me up. Top 10 JHRA moment
not musical, nor in the music trade, yet here i am enjoying Justin's highly specific content about precisely those things. The guy's a great communicator!
Nice one, best yet. Love the candour about relationships etc.
This really has to be my favourite video so far! ❤

Justin you are your own worst critic! There's lots of great songs on each TD album. I'll still hold out hope to hear some of those live one day 🤞
Q - " Do you actually believe in a thing called love? "
A - " Just listen to the rhythm of my heart "
Was surely the answer Justin.
The entire first half of One Way Ticket is flawless. Dinner Lady Arms, what a tune ❤

Best ending of the theme song, major and minor pentatonic mixed in with the blues influences,a little diatonic fir the icing. Bravo

First time to listen to Jenny. She is Ace!. That Evening Standard front page would make a good t-shirt design. Think Pistols/Clash
I'm only 20 minutes in but I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the bins to be brought up.

Nice! Can't wait for the Pat Finnerty interview. That's gonna be a fun one.
Ah you two totally have the same sense of (slightly dark) humour that I have. Loved listening to the chat on this one, do a part 2 please!!
Hi justin... tickets for november gig arrived now!!! Cant wait to see you again buddy ❤. The Believers Believe in a thing called ... the darkness 🤘🤘🤘🤘
But for the love of god, Justin- get yourself some paw-paw ointment for the dry lips (Lucas brand if you can get it) -it will change your life😅
Re. the Abyss (not the movie one) I see it as like the pure potentiality of the universe, kind of a spiritual chaos realm from which all creativity/art emerges. Or some such thing.
Keep on rocking!🙌🏻
Great episode! Love these real chats and so easy to listen to you both.
Great chat, guys. Great questions, Jenny May. Would of gladly listen to you 2 talk for another hour on this topic. Motorheart is up there with your best work, Justin. Not far behind the first record. Imo!
Justin interviewing Pat Finnerty! That's going to be amazing 😅 🎉 This news has made my day.
@44:04 Ordo ab Chao meaning Order from Chaos is a super important concept in freemasonry that has made it's way into everyday parlance.
Justin -Jenny raises her eyebrows at you when trying to encourage the right answer out of you. Lovely.
Superbly excellent episode guys!! Love the way you two are together too! More on relationships please lol I'm learning lots hahaha
I love these videos. Ive binged hours of you and Jen today. Great stuff

AZ
Fantastic adventure!
It was very interesting listening to the discussion.
How could anyone let Jenny down. No excuses.
That's horrible...it's amazing how some things just stay the same (media)
If you bleep something, could you use some high pitched Aaa's, or maybe the one from the "Again" in the theme tune?
How about the rock “Woah”? 😁
Looking fine Justin. I enjoy the videos and the witty banter very much.
One of the best bits is that Justin cites The League of Gentlemen.
For me at the local level, all of the “hurry up and wait” is the worst part of gigging. Too much waiting around, I just want to play.
This is a great conversation to get to know the pair of you a bit.
Finnerty is getting the call next week?! Unbelievable! Can't wait til next week to hear the collab!
You should revisit The Lemon Twigs. In particular 'Any time of day' off the new album. I'm getting strong 10cc vibes.
Great episode! You two make good conversation!
Nice chit chat, good to hear some human beings talk about stuff,
You both have great teeth. Really great teeth. And smiles. At times like this happy daze are very much appreciated. Big love to everyone.
Not all mugs are as comfy as it's this!!!👍
Cheers!!!
One Way Ticket gets an unfair rap… front to back bangers! Pastes PTL to the wall, - as much as I love that… funny as fuck and the tunes are ace…
I'm on a bender of your videos sir. Great stuff.
Always a great way to start the week
Was so fucking fascinating to learn that he lives in the same country as me and actually seems to have an understanding of our country. I'm addicted to these podcasts and I haven't listened to the Darkness before.
Another awesome show!
Really interesting to hear your thoughts on the best albums/songs. I pretty much totally agree with you to be honest.
Love that bluesy shredding at the end
I've been talking with dub producer scientist... man, he got royally screwed. Record company people are shadyyyyy
Yeah , I enjoyed you guys chatting . Cool , thanks .
Hi Justin. How does it work on the business side when band members leave and are replaced. Also when there have been many changes over the years when does the band stop being the band if you know what I mean?🤔
Excellent, loved this, thanks for sharing.
I'm surprised at your opinion on Last of Our Kind. I think all the songs on even the deluxe edition are great.
Definitely - I’d say it’s their second best album after PTL
You two are great. This is interesting and relaxing. Cheers
