A friend of mine took to me to see The Black Keys, in Manchester at a small venue called an academy, in 2010. I’d never heard of them. The opening track, Patrick starts hammering the drums and I feel it vibrating through my legs into my chest and I remember looking around and seeing (I was standing) a row of people with their mouths open. That started my love of the band. What’s f**** brilliant about this interview is that all they give a flying f*** about is their music and playing music. Sign of the times that you listen to 2 real artists, both in concert and interview and realise how f***** garbage the music industry is for people who don’t want to play the social media and TV appearance game. Dan, Patrick - f***** love you both, man. Newcastle, England.
They are the most underrated band ever!! ; and Dan the man is seriously Gold , but his partner in crime here is so magnetic that this all clicks. Wish them the best !!
Not going to hold you, with the exception of the Descendents most of the bands on Fat Wreck Chords are really boring especially NOFX. Also Fat Mike is kind of a tryhard and really obnoxious.
This has been the business for years, decades even, but no one seems to explain it correctly when on big platforms. This video should have 1 billion views.
I can appreciate where they are coming from here. I use to love the Black Keys back when they were raw and were doing what they wanted to do. For some time now, they have been putting out the same old crap once they found a recipe that was commercially acceptable.
Same here. I loved them early on. They influenced my playing style, my musical tastes, and my appreciation for "simple & raw" rock and roll. I went and saw them live and it was the most disappointing show I've ever been to. That may have been tired but it was pathetic. They showed up, eeked out some fan favorites then left. I quit listening after that and after Patrick's social media ramblings. I moved from them to Ty Segall in 2010 and never looked back.
Yeah, I'm one of those fans. I just love music and I'm very eclectic in my tastes. The Black keys are always in my rotation. Saw them in Fresno shortly after moving there from L.A. and, although the stadium was about half full (largest booking at that time was a mariachi festival), they rocked it nonetheless. They were true professionals and gave a great show.
Dude I’ve never listened to the black keys cause I’m mostly into metal, but that is EXACTLY how I listen to music. I have like hundreds of albums from metal bands that I just rotate through. I thought I was the only one, I was so happy to hear him describe it that way.
Damn, Patrick has it figured out. I might come across the black keys once every couple years and really get hooked, but there are a lot of records out there to listen to.
He’s spot on with his target demographic, my dad introduced me to the black keys and he fit the description at 4:00 perfectly, has shelves full of records and there’s something different on every day

The whole arsenal thing was probably supposed to be a secret.
or it was just talk
yeah he definitely snitched lol. I wonder if he got a call about that.
Could be drugs, too
Well what he said technically was a secret because it wasn't illegal. There is no law that prevents you from moving an Ar-15 across state lines as long as follow Federal transportation laws of firearms. The only real danger is the grenades, if they are registered with the ATF, you can own grenades. You just need to make sure whatever your state you're in is okay with that explosive which I can only think of about 5 states that it wouldn't.
I'd say it was drugs but Joe Perry and Steven Tyler suppose to be clean for years... So maybe Johnny's ;)
Tripped me out when he said he bought Ice Ice baby when he was 9, because I was 8 at the time....and dude looks like someone's Great Uncle.
He seriously looks 20 years older than me
Old man talking... Saw many bands buried ignored or destroyed in the 80's by record co.s, the labels basically had absolute power.
and the award for best cross over pop artist goes to: The Melvins! :3
Melvins rock...
I love this interview. Watching it plays out like an episode of Delicious Dish. The old SNL sketch.
Love how Rogan listens to him speak
When he said Tom Waits all I could think of was Joey Diaz. Lmfaooooo
Forever and ever. When i hear the words "Tom Waits", i will always think of Joey Diaz
Wait what is the relation between Waits and Diaz?
@@johnbutler7204 Diaz had this epic rant on music, shitty music, and he roasted all that is Tom Waits. Lol. You can find it on youtube
@@johnbutler7204 Joey Diaz did a rant on TCOWN where he talked about fake music fans who would own certain albums to prove and/or impress others. One of those albums was Tom Waits.
Hope that clears up everything.

@@mbeatz17 well done.
Get Liam Gallagher on this show, it'd be quality! He's a funny man, and a bona fide rock legend
But no one understands what he says
His album is out now so that's a good excuse to get him here!
He has all these cockney expressions we here in North America do not understand

Picturing Aerosmith traveling with grenades made me cackle
I used to catch these guys at open mic shows in Akron. They are beyond reproach. True spirits to the core
Set you free and everlasting light are my favorites by them :)
Lights Off “Your Touch” is my favorite song.
I was there too mate
Aerosmith travelling with grenades in tow makes me think that they believe that the plot of Revolution X is real.
The most comforting words I've heard in a long time.
They are the most underrated band ever!! ; and Dan the man is seriously Gold , but his partner in crime here is so magnetic that this all clicks. Wish them the best !!
That one black key looks really high in the thumb nail.
Looks strung out on heroin.
FccRuinedAmerica andtheentireworld thats just how Dan always looks, he’s alright
I listen to their album Magic Potion at least once a week
Fast food music
Love the Black Keys for sticking to their guns and being real about this.
Haha that's what nofx did years ago. Just do it your self! You should have them on! That would be an epic conversation
Oh man Fat Mike on the jre would be amazing
lol to listen to a fucking loser talk about his laundry list of hypocrisies. yeah it would be hilarious. i'd love to see the comments. fuck fat Mike
@@dallassegno what's the problem with Fat Mike?
Not going to hold you, with the exception of the Descendents most of the bands on Fat Wreck Chords are really boring especially NOFX. Also Fat Mike is kind of a tryhard and really obnoxious.
I’m 67 and you’re one of the 200 bands I listen to. Because it’s real
Try Guided By Voices
I was hesitant about the BK's new music but this interview deeply reassures me. Going to listen now.
Love the realness!! Priceless!
That's why the JRE is what it is.
He was spot on with how their fan base listens to them, I love them but only listen about once a month
The last line in this video is gold
I can't say that I'm a Black Keys fan, but wow, this guy is great.
@Michael Valensi Perspective
I stopped listening after Brothers
I fucking LOVE the Black Keys. Beyond the groove they kill it. My son is 5yo and BK is his fav band. He sings it and plays the drums to it.
Dan smoking is a whole fucking mood
Dude I’ve never listened to the black keys cause I’m mostly into metal, but that is EXACTLY how I listen to music. I have like hundreds of albums from metal bands that I just rotate through. I thought I was the only one, I was so happy to hear him describe it that way.
you thought you were the only one listening to albums?
AKGX8 W-wait.. I thought that *I* was the only one that mildly occasionally listened to albums. Woahh. tRiPpY aS fUcK bRuH
Getting their original "lets Rock!" Album on vinyl, worth every penny! Amazing 👏
I only buy CDs. Don't let record collections die!
If you really love it buy a physical copy, cds don't take up that much space either
Damn, Patrick has it figured out. I might come across the black keys once every couple years and really get hooked, but there are a lot of records out there to listen to.
"have you guys ever played guitar on DMT"?
Good luck 😂😂
He’s spot on with his target demographic, my dad introduced me to the black keys and he fit the description at 4:00 perfectly, has shelves full of records and there’s something different on every day
"Never gonna give you up" is my favorite song
Daniel Okey-Okoro it’s actually a cover from jerry butler. So fucking good though
Magic Potion my favorite Black Keys Record
Dan and Pat are legends... They don't need no label.
JRE is the best.
I got to listen to this podcast on the way to their first concert for this album in Denver.
Dan looks like he ain't gonna make it
Lol sheesh
Ive never geard an artist actually so clearly put themselves in the shoes of the listener like this on camera. I fucken live the black keys.
Joe Rogan: Why is everything a competition in the music industry?
Also Joe Rogan: I have the #1 podcast btw.
Fair, but that doesn’t mean he’s competing with other podcasts. I think Joe just does his thing and people like it. Speaking of Podcasts if you are a true music lover check out the “THAT RECORD GOT ME HIGH” podcast. It’s awesome. "No one *man* should have all that power" - Kanye
Today with the internet, the *kids* have all the power, which is why the music industry is such a disaster rn
But without the internet, underground artists like panchiko, death’s dynamic shroud, dos monos, and countless others wouldn’t have a fan base. I would happily choose for the the top 40 be mediocre if it meant that I and other internet users could discover more great underground music.
Inaccurate
@@tiagosousa491 yes they would. Underground bands had audiences long before the internet. they would just be on tour instead
Love the black keys... been a while.
