I agree, I remember when I saw this movie in theaters and I loved it through and through the performances of the entirety of the cast were sensational, the direction and cinematography was on point and felt very realistic even though the film took place between Pennsylvania and the backwoods of New Jersey I'm from PA and the way they captured the setting of Pennsylvania was like looking out my window and I found the narrative in the story could have been stretched out a little bit longer especially with some of the shots that were in the trailer that didn't make it in the final cut of the film I felt like could have definitely added context and substance to the storytelling but overall I enjoyed the film very much especially that final shot of the film and I feel it's meant to be left as an ambiguous ending for the audience because we don't exactly know what events in Russell's life has now become I mean it's evident that he's in the clear of avenging his brother regardless of Forrest Whitaker covering for him or not because between the time period of when Harlem killed Rodney and John Petty and then in the final act of the film when he comes up to PA and meets his demise at Russell's hand Harlem was already on the law enforcements radar because of a being a known drug dealer, loan shark, and responsible for the murder of Russell's little brother Rodney and John Petty if you remember the voicemail message that was left on Dan the barkeep's phone and then in the last act of the film Harlem and his accomplice calmly but essentially threatened the establishment of John Petty's bar and murdered Dan the bar keep so Russell's position is clearly out of justifiable homicide because whether or not Forest Whitaker has his back the co-worker Julie at the bar could totally not defend him in his case saying that he was an innocence civilian trying to protect her and dan from these people. Now from a more moral and deeper sense in the end Russell did redeem himself by avenging his brother and essentially getting away with it but in the final frame you see him sitting at his table having a look about him that can read many things is he at the peace and just comfortably numb with the way things have turned out, is he feeling melancholy, is he feeling regret about the things he that he could have done to prevent the outcome of his brother's life or the regret that he got Dan killed in the process of trying to take down Harlem and let alone the pain that he still feels from the accidental vehicular manslaughter and all of these events and things that have happened to this guy who has just seemed to be a good intentioned sweetheart, grew up tough, but really just wanted to be a nice guy and for everyone to be all right and then has the things in his life that he loves slowly taken from him and then plundered into the harsh dark corners of society in which truly cultivates his character into one of being hardened and filled with a deep sense of regression and longing for satisfaction so in the end it's not a question of whether or not he got away with what he did but whether or not he's satisfied with what his life now has become

I felt the pacing of this film was pretty much on point. The slow burn added to the realism of this film. I felt the movie was very realistic for the subject matter. The film was not "Hollywoodized" at all. To each their own, but I felt it was one of the best of the year.

I think the best proof of it is actually the last scene, where it's not the cop who shoot to save him from jail, or him giving up his vengeance. There is no deus ex machina, it's the protagonist seeking vengeance who shoot, like something that would happen in real life.

SPOILER One of my friends had suggested to me the last 20 mins or so of the movie didn't happen and Bale was just sitting alone thinking about what he wanted to do to the man that harmed his brother. That's why the ending was so drawn out and unrealistic, and just seemed kind of surreal. Not sure if it's right but I thought it was interesting. Casey was by far the best part of this film though.

This film is not for everyone, in fact most people probably didn't enjoy it. It's definitely a movie better seen at home alone than in a theater. That said the acting in this movie is top shelf, Chris Bale in my opinion is similar to Marlon Brando. The guy just takes acting to another level. Have you seen The Machinist? It's not a good film but watching how Chris Bale becomes the role he's playing. Sorry for the rant....

    SPOILER ALERT
I believe the final shot was the cop keeping his promise he made it right. In addition, it would make perfect sense because Harlan came to Braddock. Russell "just happen"to interrupt the robbery. The only real legal issue would be the cop admitting that Russell fired the gun out of will and not passing it off as self defense or defense of a third party. Let's face it, who is going to miss Harlan
    I love this film.!!!

Well I wouldn't think he'd get life in prison for killing a criminal that the police wanted to bring down anyway. It's a small town, and no witnesses except for the officer. I'm sure it was one of those I didn't see what happened kind of moment. The last scene implies that he didn't go to jail, or he did and got out, and is still unhappy, and alone. I don't think it's misplaced. How is it misplaced?

  • @Chloeeee12333

"Cooper then cuts to Russell sitting quietly in a living room, before fading to black. “It’s an homage to ‘The Godfather Part II,’” Cooper said, referring to the final shot of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 Best Picture winner.
“This is a man who is battling his soul and living with the consequences of violence. When he went to kill Harlan DeGroat, he thought he could have gone to prison or be killed by the police. He never thought he would get off and that the sheriff would ultimately say, ‘Let me make this right.’ And he does,” Cooper said of the finale of his film, which takes place at an undated point after Russell has murdered DeGroat. “This is a man who, whether he is prison or not, he’s in prison for the rest of his life. Hopefully he will find peace and contentment at some point. I’m a very optimistic person, I hope that, ultimately, Russell Baze does find that.”

That could be it as well, Whitaker just let him go after killing Degroat. The way I see it is that he feels the way every character feels after getting revenge - they feel alone and that it's not for them to decide and make things right the way they think (read The Count of Monte Cristo).

Tragic unforseen occurences lead to bleak paths that are life altering in Out of the Furnace.
The performances in this backwoods tale of murder, revenge, and heartbreak are outstanding.
The pain of the characters leapt off the screen and hit me like a brick.
Director Scott Cooper displays his ability to capture life changing moments when characters realize
their lives will never be the same.
OOTF may need some trimming around the edges and tweaks here and there, but i will be shocked
if this film doesnt receive multiple acting nominations.

I wouldn't change a thing about this film. I absolutely love it. I am guessing the shot at the end that you are referring to is him sitting at the table. To me this made perfect sense. He probably went away to jail again for a 10-year charge but only served 5-6 for good behavior. Then he returns to his house alone, and his uncle likely dead of old age. So now he has no one. He sits pondering how things might have gone differently for him had different choices been made or circumstances were different. Ultimately he is alive and free but facing a greatly diminished future.

In life, not everything is going to go right, you can go through stretches where things continue to go wrong back to back to back. I felt this movie did a great job showing how life can really kick you down and you can lose everything but continue to try to do the right thing in the end… 5/5

Just watched this intense, introspective film! I was hesitant about it because the reviews I read were not too great. But I originally heard about this film when I found out Eddie Vedder was going to compose the soundtrack. Pearl Jam is my favorite band and only one song is played in the opening and closing credits, "Release", which is from the first album. Man, this track fit in so well with this movie. The song deals with someone trying reflect on the memory of his father, whom he didn't have a chance to get to spend time with. So this completely works within the context of the film and what The protagonist goes through psychologically. Amazing acting, heartbreaking but redemptive story, great soundtrack and it's definitely worth watching. In terms of the ending, I think it shows how the cop let him go after knowing what he'd gone through. He realizes this when he lowers his gun and basically lets Russell go. Of course if he shot him, his wife, Russell's former gf, would have killed him(figuratively speaking). Russell also gets moral credit for not shooting the deer. Since he let him go, the cop let him go as well, which illustrates the ironic dynamic within the film. By the end, we see a broken down Russell who lost his dear father, his girlfriend, his brother and big chunk of his heart.

Just watched it on HBO. Loved the use of Pearl Jam in the beginning and end, over Bale as the working man. Eddie recorded a new version of Release just for this film. On the ending, I think it’s pretty clear the cop fulfilled his vow to make it right, and probably for the sake of Zoe’s character.

According to an article by Huffpost, Cooper said of the final shot, "It's an homage to 'The Godfather Part II.' This is a man who is battling his soul and living with the consequences of violence...This is a man who, whether he is in prison or not, he's in prison for the rest of his life."

The Machinist. The music was very 1940s and it added this creepy-ness to it that really sold the movie.

I saw this at the Vienna and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The performances are very good and it's a grown up film.
It's a slow burn, but it's that sort of film - boredom is based on your threshold; well acted and carefully built, it's not usual movie fare and all the better for that.
It's better than 90% of the fast cut, empty headed plotting nonsense that passes for plot, films that I've seen this year.
Think the review by Chris us pretty spot on
It wasn't without minor faults, but overall very good.
    Harrelson is a national treasure

Last shot is a homage to Godfather II if I remember correctly, at least that is what Scott Cooper said.

That end scene was explaining that he got bailed out of jail because of his cop friend, and It shows Christian Bale sitting alone without a brother without a girlfriend and without a dad or grandpa! So he basically alone at the end but he got bailed out of jail because Of his cop friend!

The tv spots even showed the "Do I look like a cop?" line and I still think that line and how Bale delivered it was definitely a throw-back to his Batman lol.

    SPOILER ALERT ON THE ENDING:
The result of Russell’s killing Harlan is he becomes a man in his own self-made prison. “A man sitting around the table at his home, where he shared meals with his deceased father, deceased mother and deceased brother” is how Cooper breaks down that final shot. “Though he isn’t in prison, he’s in prison for the rest of his life. He’s living with the consequences of violence.” Initially, Russell faced those consequences in different ways.
That's what I found online. Still, I didn't love the final shot either. Very strange

Chris, I just finished watching the movie. In my humble opinion, (and what I took from the last scene), is that Bale's character is still a lonely, hollow, sad man. Revenge was served cold. And he shows it in this lonely, dark shot.

Thought this movie was acturally very, very good. I think it's Christian's Bale best performance so far (he gives a better performance in this than in American Hustle)... And the slow pacing gives the movie a ominous ambience. A-

The ending is that now he’s all alone. He went through all that and has lost his girl and his mom and dad and then his brother. It’s tragic. The only person he has left now is his uncle who has no family of his own but he’ll lose him someday too. And then there’s this comparison between the deer they kill and Casey Afflec. But I really think the deer that he doesn’t shoot is himself. He survives but it’s sad because he’s alone.

It's funny that so many are puzzled by the last scene, because just before the last scene I was asking the screen..."well what happened to him?" Then the last fades in. I got my answer.

I fucking loved this. It's more southern gothic....along the lines of Mud, Blie Ruin, Cold In July, Joe, Winter's Bone etc. More of a character study on Christian Bale than a plot driven film but all the acting was fantastic and I just loved the overall mood. It's not a movie it's a film. You don't watch something like Out Of The Furnace to escape reality like most of Hollywood attempts to do, it's a very real & sobering experience.

Zodiac. It's a slight thriller, slight horror, slight suspense, but mostly crime drama (& damn well informed crime drama). Most people go into it thinking it's going to be purely horror, but where the focus is really at is the characters and how the events affect their lives. When I first saw it, I thought it was going to be a horror film too. What I got is a film that's sort of a murder investigation epic (best way I can put it) and I'm so glad that it is too, cuz it's one of my favorite movies of all time. David Fincher's the man.

SPOILER ALERT DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE. I think the last shot shows that forest whitakers character maybe got bale out of that situation somehow which keeps him out of jail. still didn't care for that shot much and thought the movie was lackluster. prisoners was another sort of depressing and grim kind of movie that actually felt more lively despite its sad and depressing tone which is something I felt this one lacked. Anyways, great review as always keep it up !

I just saw this film last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. What I didn't understand though is a bunch of my friends said that after they came out of the film they were depressed I didn't feel depressed at all I thought the film was just a good movie. You're right Chris now that I think about it the last shot of the movie really confuse me I was wondering what is this mean I don't know perhaps we'll find out when the Blu-ray and DVD is released.

Just caught on Prime. Wow the cast. It was very good but short of great. It kinda reminded me of a mix of the Deer Hunter meets Deliverance meets Fight Club. Hated to see Casey Affleck get killed off so soon. It just didn’t really form a bond between Bale and Affleck to seem to warrant him killing Woody. There needed a little more believable bother bonding. But I guess having Bale and Affleck hunt and kill the deer together would have been too much like Deer Hunter.

agreed with you on the acting and the ending. Everyone was great, the ending was "Night of the Living Dead" with a "Huh?" tacked on. But why would you wanna see a movie with such a negative vibe? It reminded me of "I Spit on Your Grave" with one difference--"I Spit on Your Grave" was more honest. Same slow pace, same cheat publicity as a thriller, same feeling you needed a shower after seeing it. The only differences were the technical aspects, the budget and the performances (esp. Woody Harrelson) But I still didn't like it and I still need a shower...

I just started watching your movie reviews. So when I seen this movie for the first time this year...I wanted to get your opinion. I disagree, because this movie is an A+. Just too realistic to knit pick at. Yes, the last scene is oh so memorable. Sticks with you days after, and it's like a random thought.
