Needless to say, I was completely floored by the end. The final third blew me away. It was nothing at all what I expected. It was so much more. My favorite Korean film since I was introduced to them decades ago. It’s always wonderful to see Oldboy on the big screen! My favorite aspect of Oldboy that no one talks about are the quieter moments: when Mido talks about the ants and how she’s conveying soul crushing loneliness without actually saying it and the tender moments when he blow dries her hair. In my mind these moments are what truly give Oldboy its humanity towards its characters.
I just recently had the pleasure of seeing this at the Music Box Theater in Chicago, and it's truly one of the best cinema experiences I've had in my life. Park Chan-Wook is one of the greatest living filmmakers of all-time and this might be his masterpiece.
I will never forget watching this movie for the first time. It made me recalibrate my ideas on what storytelling could be. I mean... that ending! I still can't get over it lmao -Terrence
Oldboy is one of the most unique and masterpiece of films I’ve ever seen. It really left a huge impact on me after I watched it. The ending of this movie still leaves a permanent image in my brain.
One of the GOAT’s! You utterly nailed your description of the film’s singular tone. Got me into Korean cinema, and what a ride it has been. Recently got around to watching his 2016 release The Handmaiden and it was fantastic as well (albeit being a very different type of film). Decision to Leave is next up.
Decision to leave is wonderful as well, it's also very interesting to see how Parks movies have changed over the years, you could say he has become softer in age.
I’ve watched thousands of movies over the years, but never really had a number one favorite until I watched this movie and it solidly took that spot for me. The cinematography and editing are engaging and unmatched. The character development really pulls you in. The story has a twist that you don’t see coming and it unravels in a satisfying way. It has tasteful humor sprinkled in that adds to the character development without ruining the mood and offers fleeting respite from the very dark story. This movie is a masterpiece and I don’t see anything else competing for its spot as my number 1 favorite movie of all time. As an aside, my second favorite movie of all time is “Coherence” (2013). Give it a shot and thank me later. 😊
I wanted to watch this film for years and finally did for the first time on the big screen. It was so worth the wait. The big twist made my jaw drop to the floor. What an insane ride.
(SPOILER ALERT) The ending still haunts me. Woo-jin gets his vengeance upon Oh Dae-su. He planned for decades for this moment. He has finally got the man who he blames for the death of his sister to beg on his knees and cut his own tongue. He smiles, but inside the elevator, he realizes that after completing everything he wanted, the pain is still there. Her sister still jumped, and he became a monster. "Cry, and you cry alone"
@@Jimmyjim4 bro let him express his feelings for the movie, you should be encouraging it. That's what cinema is all about, what the viewer gets out of it
Fun random fact. I was watching this movie with my wife. All of a sudden she screamed: THAT’s MEEEE! 😅😅 on the scene on the hair saloon there is a poster for some Wella products and she is the girl on the picture! 😅😅
They were playing Oldboy at a theater about 40 minutes away from me and I’m so happy that I got to see it before it left theaters. I’ve seen it 3 times now and it’s just an absolute masterpiece. Brilliant in every way and I got so much from it this time around. I got to take a friend of mine who doesn’t really even watch foreign films and has (unfortunately) seen the remake and he absolutely loved it and couldn’t believe it. I loved seeing that. Also, loved hearing the grade being given at the end of the review. Missed that.
This movie was jaw dropping. Still haven’t seen a better manga -> film adaptation in my life since seeing this movie. Wish they were playing it in a theater near me.
I'm so glad you reviewed this. I watched this film about 15 years ago, & it really got me into binging a bunch of Korean movies. I became a huge fan of their cinema. They're so good at making movies! I feel like as of recent, they're becoming a bit more Hollywood now though, but man the classic ones are so great! There are so many that I've rewatched 5+ times. Lol
@@foodrage117 Just like the last comment recommended, The Wailing is one of my faves, probably one of my top 5 Korean movies & my favorite Horror/Exorcist type movie. Some more movies off the top of my head from various genres, Oldboy, I Saw The Devil, The Man From Nowhere, A Bittersweet Life, The Chaser, Memories of Murder, Train To Busan, New World, Deliver Us from Evil, Nameless Gangster, No Tears for the Dead, The Swordsman, A Company Man, The Villainess, Night in Paradise, The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion. Some of these are just okay mindless action movies, but some are amazing. If you're into love movies, A Moment to Remember, My Sassy Girl, Windstruck, Always, Salut d'Amour. There's a lot more, but these are just ones I thought of off the top of my head. I usually just Google "Best Korean movies" & choose based off reviews & recommendations.
Yeah, the people who were into Oldboy and directors like Kim Sang-jin, and Kim Ki-duk back in the day have known how cool Korean cinema was decades before it finally went mainstream in the U.S.
@@NelsonStJames Yeah, I don't think I've watched many recent Korean movies that I really really liked, at least not as much as the 2000s & earlier to mid 2010s movies. It feels like they're starting to go more towards a Hollywood route now, a lot of CGI & higher budget movies.
Park Chan-Wook is amazing. Oldboy, Thirst and The Handmaiden are all amazing. Not many directors are able to make three films that are as good as those, most don't manage to make one on that level. For me he is among the best directors ever.
Park is a genius, but imo Oldboy was his peak. That says more about the film than about his filmmaking prowess, as idk how any filmmaker can top making Oldboy
I saw this movie roughly in 2007 or 2008 and instantly became one of my all time favourites. This was the very movie that made me realise that Korean movies are absolute top tier. They are crafted with care and attention to details. Great commited actors and directors who actually know what they want. (i don't actually know this but i assume they have very little interference from studios and producers). Of course the corridor scene is one of my favourites but as i grew older and wiser i started to see the whole picture and the courage of the director to end the movie as he did. That ending would never ever fly in hollywood. Thanks for the reminder Chris.
Because they will never promote incest relationship n that what's between them was love this is too much dark but i think "girl in the basement" is even more darker movie than this
i'd also highly recommend Park Chan Wook's other early films that are less well known, such as Joint Security Area and especially Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance, which i personally like even more than Oldboy. another similar Korean film (in terms of tone and action) is the Kim Jee Woon film A Bittersweet Life
I watched Oldboy when I was about 15-16 years old and when it was over I couldn't believe what I had just witnessed. My jaw was on the floor and I couldn't get the movie or its ending out of my head for months. I've seen watched countless times and I never tire of it. It is always a delight when I meet someone who hasn't watched it yet and we can see it together I can get to experience them experiencing it for the first time. Truly one of the best movies ever made.
I just watched it for the first time last weekend. Quite a touching and amazing movie. The score, action, acting, and plot twist are so shockingly good.
I saw this last week on Wednesday, and after finishing it, it left me utterly shaken to my core and speechless. It just might me my new “best film that I never wanna see again,” since while it’s a bona fide masterpiece, it’s also messed up on so many different levels. Seriously, *nobody* wins in the end, and it’s more or less just a story of terrible people slowly destroying themselves. While I’m entirely glad I saw it, a part of me can’t help but regret it too lol.
@@Jimmyjim4”Bro chill, it’s just a movie🤓” as if movies can’t have a tangible effect on people, smh. Otherwise, why even make them? Which shows you that it was a damn good one, and is something that every director should strive for.
Agreed, I enjoyed the movie but would never watch it again. I felt bad for the daughter because she was oblivious to the whole thing and I don't think she falls into the category of a terrible person like the rest. Also, Oh Dae Su wasn't exactly a good person but I don't think he deserved all the horrible things that happened to him
I've been a cineast for all the years. I've seen all the classics, "must-sees", arthouse here and there. But this one is and will always be a masterpiece and is still my number one film of all time. Period!

I saw the movie last night after 10 years and it still holds up well. it was also interesting seeing the reaction of a younger crowd watching it for the first time.
I'm a big fan of Park Chan-Wook's work and I'm embarrassed to admit that I watched this movie for the first time yesterday, I think part of that fear was because I was scared I wouldn't like it as much due to the fact of how well known and popular it is. Having watched it, I completely understand and support it's praise ; I LOVED every frame, what a good film, an instant favorite. Mr. Park is a master at his craft.
lol your logic doesn't make any sense, Shouldn't you like it BECAUSE of how well known and popular it is? That's how it normally is because mass praise usually means it's amazing!
If you haven’t already, I recommend a subsume to watch. I ended up liking it a lot more on my subsequent viewings because you notice so much subtleties and themes that weren’t apparent in a first viewing. It became my favorite movie ever after I watched it a few times.
I went to the movies last week to watch it for the first time ever. Nothing prepares you for this ride! I had such a visceral reaction to this movie, it hits you like a truck. Loved every second of it. Glad this masterpiece is getting a “revival”
Even an excellent director like Spike Lee couldn't make an American version as good as the original. It proves that a masterpiece should just stay as for what it is, we don't need a remake of this movie. 100 years later we will still be watching Oldboy
The same reason why Hollywood should not remake K dramas.Recently I heard that they have plan to remake "Crush Landing on You" makes me worry because that movie has a lot of Korean Cultures and History waved to the story so if you remove them there will be nothing left.
@@ironheart5830Scorsese/DiCaprio are supposed to be involved in a remake of "The Chaser" , why? Just don't do it. They will never give it such a dark ending and that will ruin it.

I'm so glad I finally got to see Oldboy in theaters. The cinematography is incredible on the big screen. Chung hoon chung does not get the recognition he deserves.
All these years, i never knew Oldboy was a manga adaptation until James Gunn says it in one of his GQ interview about his top favorite comic book movies. It has got to be a great manga if the movie is this masterpiece
Quite surprisingly the comic is nothing like the movie. I think the director just amped up the source material with his style and imagery. But I urge you to check it out though.
not so much, just an average crime manga without any of the interesting twists and turns of the movie. not a bad read and the art is fine, but a rare occasion where the adaptation is much stronger than the source
One of my all-time favorite films. The entire Revenge Trilogy is fantastic. If you like this, you'd probably enjoy I Saw The Devil which also stars Choi Min-sik as the antagonist.
One thing about OldBoy I never understood until recently is why Oh-Desu was imprisoned and then released after exactly 15 years. Then I read an interesting thing about the Korean justice system. It was the statute of limitations on first degree murder at the time the story takes place.
SPOILERS: I saw this movie for the first time with a group of friends when it was rereleased a week ago. Somehow I managed to remain COMPLETELY blind as to any spoilers over the years. Halfway through the movie my friend leans over and whispers “oh my god this is the movie where the guy does his own daughter!”. I was completely taken out of the movie and my cinematic experience was completely ruined.

Great review as always. Looking forward to watching this one.
Your comment about the director integrating different tones, such as humor and fear, in such a dark story are common in tons of Asian media. You see it alot in Anime and Videogames from Japan. The Yakuza games masterfully balance this as well which makes them extremely great all around. I don't know the specifics of how they balance it either, it's definitely cultural, but media that balances this provides a more holistic picture of the universe and characters, and allows us to really sympathize with the characters when it counts. It doesn't feel "forced" like many movies do. I wish modern filmmakers outside of Asia do a better job with this outside of going too grimdark and take themselves too seriously, or what we see in modern blockbusters where directors rely too much on the funny stuff and don't take any time to develop the serious stuff.
A great film for fathers to watch with their daughters. A masterpiece that shows the strong love that exists between a father and daughter. Incredibly wholesome stuff.
One of the all time best movies. Also, I love the Silent Hill shirt. Can't help but notice it's in the same font as the band Suffocation. That's really cool.
Finally saw this tonight. Unfortunately, I knew the twist beforehand, so I’m sure that impacted how much I enjoyed it, but I still thought it was amazing! Fantastic performances throughout, incredible cinematography, and a phenomenal blend of genres. My absolute favorite part though was the villain. He was just so captivating, sympathetic but also extreme. Loved every second he was on screen. Really don’t have any flaws with it, so I can’t even imagine how much more I would have liked it if it wasn’t spoiled for me.
I enjoyed your review (I saw Oldboy when it was just released in cinemas thanks to a friend of mine and sheer curiosity) but you should mention that the Oldboy is the second movie of Chan Woo Park´s "revenge trilogy", beginning with "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and ending with "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", which is even darker than Oldboy yet still funny.
I watched oldboy like maybe 8 or 9 years ago. I had seen a couple of Asian films but I guess I was stuck in that sort of stereotypical place, which I believed that the quality would never match American cinema and man I was so damn wrong lol. Oldboy was the first film that brought me into Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, Indonesian and Indian films that now encompass some of my favorite films of all time. Also got me into Asian horror which is my favorite genre. I owe this movie a lot for what it opened me up to. Absolutely a classic film. Seeing it again in the theatre on opening night last week was amazing. I was excited like a child to go see this in the theatre.

I wanted to give a special thank you. Since covid no film got me to the theatre. Not because I was afraid/careful, I just learned to live without... but when you mentioned it being released in theatres I immediately checked and got tickets. Oldboy is one of the most unique and masterpiece of films I’ve ever seen. It really left a huge impact on me after I watched it. The ending of this movie still leaves a permanent image in my brain.
The ending has stuck with me for years as well
One of the GOAT’s! You utterly nailed your description of the film’s singular tone. Got me into Korean cinema, and what a ride it has been. Recently got around to watching his 2016 release The Handmaiden and it was fantastic as well (albeit being a very different type of film). Decision to Leave is next up.
I loved The Handmaiden as well..
May I recommend The Man from Nowhere and I Saw The Devil.
Decision to leave is wonderful as well, it's also very interesting to see how Parks movies have changed over the years, you could say he has become softer in age.
20 years later and I still can't say that any movie is quite similar to this or reminds me of this.. A unique masterpiece
Seven is the closest.

Whoa, this is one my favorite movies of all time. Very cool to see you review it.
Coherence is awesome. I actually liked it better than Oldboy. Oldboy actually quite doesn't do it for me
This and "I Saw the Devil" are my two favourite Korean films, and there are a LOT of good films to choose from. Masterpieces.
I wanted to watch this film for years and finally did for the first time on the big screen. It was so worth the wait. The big twist made my jaw drop to the floor. What an insane ride.
(SPOILER ALERT)
The ending still haunts me. "Cry, and you cry alone"
that incestous fuck deserved all the pain and horror he got. Oh Dae-su didn't.

Never in my life would I think Vanify Fair getting Park Chan-wook to talk about one of the greatest scene of film history.
I am so glad I got the chance to see this movie in a theater that’s close to me on my birthday! Such a masterpiece!
Lol
Any recommendation?
@@foodrage117 The wailing
Utterly shaken? Bro chill, it’s a movie
@@Jimmyjim4”Bro chill, it’s just a movie🤓” as if movies can’t have a tangible effect on people, smh. Otherwise, why even make them? I’m probably being a bit hyperbolic, but the bottom line I certainly wasn’t left the same after finishing the movie as I was going into it. Which shows you that it was a damn good one, and is something that every director should strive for.
Agreed, I enjoyed the movie but would never watch it again.
I felt bad for the daughter because she was oblivious to the whole thing and I don't think she falls into the category of a terrible person like the rest.
Also, Oh Dae Su wasn't exactly a good person but I don't think he deserved all the horrible things that happened to him
Old Boy is a one in a million movie.
Absolutely adore Oldboy. Second only to The Thing in my favourite movies list
One of the best revenge movies ever made. I remember all the buzz it created 20 years ago, well before Parasite.
I've been a cineast for all the years. I've seen all the classics, "must-sees", arthouse here and there.
But this one is and will always be a masterpiece and is still my number one film of all time. Period!
this movie has had a huge impact on me. it was one of the first reasons for me to really get into film and filmmaking.
it also inspired one of my best friends to get into acting...
overall an incredibly important part of my journey. also it started my admiration for korean movies!
@@Gadget-Walkmen I was afraid it could be overhyped, not the case with this film but it has happened to me with other movies.

Don't feel embarassed, unless you watched spike lee's awful and embarrassing "reinterpretation" first before you watched the original
I don't know what it is, but there's just something about the style of Korean film that American filmmakers just can't capture.
@@ironheart5830Scorsese/DiCaprio are supposed to be involved in a remake of "The Chaser" , why? Just don't do it. They will never give it such a dark ending and that will ruin it.

I saw Oldboy recently in my college campuses theatre and even though my seat wasn’t the best it was by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. Everything about it was perfect and I was riveted to my seat from the beginning to the end. I just hope that it will become easier to watch/own in the US soon so I can see it again and again.
Same
I was in Korea in 04-05, 2 amazing movies dropped at pretty much the same time. Oldboy, and Ong Bak.... still 2 of my favorite movies.
This movie has it all. I love when writers just keep adding strange elements like hypnotism and flashbacks but layer it in a climactic way
DUDE! I went and saw it this past weekend. Felt like the first time. Its so good, the transitions and the funny but also the absolute despair. So well done.
Thanks for for a great review, Chris. Never seen the movie. I looked at a cinemark near me, bought a ticket and going to see it after work tonight. I’ve been dying to see it and don’t want to miss an opportunity to see it in theaters.
You probably should have given a mention to the soundtrack which is quite frankly haunting and downright amazing at conveying an unforgettable experience of a movie.
Oldboy has such a good soundtrack
I actually purchased the soundtrack on CD back in the day. Totally worth it. A Tale of Two Sisters also has a killer soundtrack/score.
PLEASE continue to review older movies, Chris. You’ve helped me so much in regards to educating me on both film and film making and it’s always great watching your content. Keep up the great work ❤
Yes! Sadly, now when recommending this movie to someone, we also have to add: "make sure to watch the ORIGINAL korean movie, not the crappy Spike Lee rEiNtErprEtaTION".
Yeah, but it still deviates from it and many argue that it's actually better because of Park Chan-wook's excellent direction.
I actually heard by many that the manga is just OK. People give it a 5/10 or 6/10 from what I've seen.
They also say that in the movie...
@@fizzygillespie Maybe they didn't translate it that well in the subtitles of my Bluray. I didn't pick up on that when I saw it.

I was completely taken out of the movie and my cinematic experience was completely ruined.
yeah I hate it when people spoil movies, I dont unerstand why some like doing it.
Your friend should be whipped in public...
It was pretty obvious as soon as they appear onscreen together.

One of the best films I have watched EVER. Please review The Handmaiden as well. Korean movies have been great for a long time and I'm glad Parasite was the one bring it globally. That being said, Oldboy would win an oscar if it was released today.
I'd rather he review "Thirst" or "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance." those are his next two best movies IMO.
Maybe you're just young or new to historical film appreciation, but Korean film has been appreciated and admired globally for over 40 years.
Even before the internet, when Korea made something outstanding all the film fans knew about within a year.

If you haven't watched it already please please watch it I can't recommend it enough. The most realistic revenge film you'll ever see in my opinion with a mixture of violence, comedy and sadness.
Old school Hong Kong movies also throw in many different genres into a single film.
I love this original and the Spike Lee remake. I for sure pause and judge if someone loves film but hasn’t seen either version.
A great film for fathers to watch with their daughters. A masterpiece that shows the strong love that exists between a father and daughter. Incredibly wholesome stuff.
BRUH.
Uhh... Did we watch the same movie or are you joking? I think it'd be at the very least awkward to watch it with your daughter for that reason.
Audition is a great romantic comedy as well.

One thing people always fail to mention about this movie is the soundtrack - it’s absolutely perfect.
This is easily the best revenge movie ever imo, and one of the most visceral movie experiences ive ever had. The ending is just so...MM

Also, I love the Silent Hill shirt. Can't help but notice it's in the same font as the band Suffocation. That's really cool.

One of my favorite films. I’ve wanted to hear Chris talk about it.
I remember when James Gunn said this was in his top 5 comic book films, and I couldn’t agree more
Finally saw this tonight.
I love this movie too much...."cries and whispers" Old Boy's soundtrack was my phone's ringtone for years.
Funny thing is I saw this movie first time when I was 15, and to me it was my introduction to real cinema other than Hollywood blockbusters, and a year after that I discovered this channel, im subscribed since then and I’ve learned so much about movies and cinema thanks to Chris
this movie just started rattling around in my head lately. magical psychic moment i guess. but i remembered the humor more than anything this time around. i really looked forward to watching it again for the scenes in the room and when he first gets out. this video is eerily perfect in its timing and content, ima watch it now.

Thanks for the reminder, I am rewatching it this weekend! 😎
I first heard of Oldboy after seeing a poster for it on the wall of this RUclipsr I used to watch back in the late 00s.
I was so confused by what the movie was not only because I had never heard of the movie but when I looked it up, it was in a language I had never heard of.
In all these years since, I've never had the chance to truly get to experience the movie despite being able to see the bits and pieces by movie reviewers on RUclips.
And now 20 years later I'll finally be able to see this movie in full.
I wanted to give a special thank you. Since covid no film got me to the theatre. Not because I was afraid/careful, I just learned to live without... but when you mentioned it being released in theatres I immediately checked and got tickets. I probably would have missed out on finally seeing it on the screen if not for that little statement so seriously THANK YOU!
