"Oldboy" is just incredible. I love how it still inspires people over 20 years later. It feels so fresh. Even now i am seeing new angles to this movie. How the style mirrors the motif of the painting in Dae Sues cell with the man that cries and laughs the same time. The movie is brutal and ugly but at the same time it has such a beautiful art style and music. The whole editing is going so well with the story, its mindblowing. There is beauty in everything that is terrible in this movie. What a masterpiece. I have seen it in 2003 and recently i saw it with my girlfriend. It is absolutely timeless.
If you don't already know by now, the "Oldboy" movie was inspired by the Japanese manga "Oldboy" which came out in the late 90's. I also recommend Fighter in the Wind (2004 based on a true story), Heaven's Soldiers (2005 mix of sci fi, comedy, and history), Assassination (2015), and My Sassy Girl (2001 rom com).
The basic kidnapping story is based on manga, but Features of the movie and the entire important content is made with Park Chan-wook touch. The action of the manga has a variety of cuts and speed, also there is no hammer action. but the movie is made with only one cut(LongTake). Please note, The difference is "Oldboy - What's the Difference?" / "Oldboy - Resurrecting the Greek Tragedy" RUclips Video. The movie Old Boy is more of Greek mythology. OhDaesu(Similar Oidípous). The direct Emotional action violence that touches the skin is a characteristic of Korean action movies.

Great work James. Always find your breakdowns to be thoroughly compelling and precise. I really enjoyed BOTH versions of Oldboy. Spike Lee did an exceptional job with the American version as well.

This film is an adaption of the original Oldboy manga. That’s why they framed it so prominently before the hallway fight. Chan-wook Parks film are all masterclasses is style. Sympathy Mr Vengeance will always be my favorite.
The movie is based on a Japanese Manga of the same name ‘Oldboy’. The director always had that in mind while making this film. That may be the reason for the comic book like scenes.
This is a movie i watched years ago but im afraid to watch it again because of how bizarre yet iconic it was. I don't want to ruin the first impressions i had of it by rewatching it lmao.
I've seen a couple of times. Honestly, it took me at least three tries to understand the story wholly. I haven't seen it for more than ten years - and obviously, I remember it to great detail still...
I don´t think anyone wrote a comment about it.... but the octopus scene was actually real. Apparantly he had to eat 4 live ones, before they got the scene right. That actor really goes out for his roles.
don't know if someone might have commented this already, but as u guessed this film is based on a Japanese comic book with the same title i believe. director Park is a master of storytelling and cinematography and has done a really awesome job of the adaptation
I struggled to know why I love this movie so much. Now I know thanks to you. It really feels like a real life manga. More than most real life anime movies

The original manga is not much different from an ordinary thriller. This is a movie full of Park Chan-wook. Some of the Old Boy scenes are homages to classic noir or hitchcock films.
Yeah, shots are beautiful in this film man. If you didn't know, DoP for this film is now working in Hollywood! He shot 'It' remake(the first one, sequel had different DoP) and Hotel Artemis and upcoming Last night in soho
so, there's a list of films I made for myself, sort of unofficial trilogy if you will on a theme of love and hate. and all of the movies on this list are emotionally raw and intense and go progressively more crazy as the list goes. and the list is: 1 - OldBoy [2003] 2 - Balada triste de trompeta (The Last Circus in US) [2010] 3 - Possession [1981] I highly recommend to watch all of these in that exact order. the last one is so overcharged with intense emotions that I had to pause a few times to have a breather. also, fun fact - Tarantino was in the jury at Cannes for the screening of both the OldBoy and Balada. he gave Balada a standing ovation while OldBoy surprised him, by making him shed tears for the antagonist.
and a bonus recommendation - The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover [1989] I don't include it in the 'trilogy' because (besides it wouldn't be a trilogy anymore) stylistically it's a totally different beast - like a mix of a theatre play and a renaissance painting come to life. but thematically and dramatically it fits well. great film.

Hahaha my man! Enjoy the day brotha!
octopus. 100% real.
The Handmaiden is Park Chan-wook's masterpiece. that film is flawless.
A lot of people have mentioned! I’ll make sure to put that in future patreon polls! Thanks for the support my friend!
Yes, indeed. But Hollywood saw only a 'porn movie'.
You should really see the wailing, best Korean movie I've ever seen
You should react to A TALE OF TWO SISTERS!!! One of the best Korean horror films ever!!! The best thing is to just watch this movie without knowing anything about it))) And also THE WAILING is amazing!
I’ll give it a try and let u know ;)
people probabyl already mentioned this, but this is the second movie of a trilogy. i also really like the third one, it is called "sympathy for lady vengeance".
Korean is often filled with style, but one of my favorite Asian stylist is Wong Kar Wai, you should watch "In the Mood for Love"
Oh man, the use of colors in that movie is beyond beautiful
How about The Handmaiden next? Another park chan wook masterpiece.
I always been a big fan of movie making..your channel are alot more than a reaction.. subscribing..and yeah, Korean cinematography and story telling are on another level matter what genre..
21:05 Oldboy summed up in one sentence
I also recommend Fighter in the Wind (2004 based on a true story), Heaven's Soldiers (2005 mix of sci fi, comedy, and history), Assassination (2015), and My Sassy Girl (2001 rom com).
Another REALLY good Korean movie is Memories of murder, highly recommended.
Will put that on the upcoming patreon polls!
@@JamesVSCinema definitely won't regret that
The basic kidnapping story is based on manga, but Features of the movie and the entire important content is made with Park Chan-wook touch.
Ki-duk Kim Time (2006) The Bow (2005) Samaritan Girl (2004) Breath (2007)
This is the first time I've noticed that the umbrella that reveals the dropped wings as the start has the same pattern as the reveal boxes at the end
Another true masterpiece movie. Oh and the acting from the main character is second to none!
YESSSS one of my absolute favourites! The first time I saw this I couldn't think about anything else for a couple of days. Btw, you're right, this is inspired by a manga.
Same my friend..SAME! I was in a trance for the rest of the day. Had a whole meeting afterwards too and was like..”let’s reschedule” haha!
You one of the realist youtubers bruh. Thank you for being you 🙏🏼🤟🏼
My brotha Kyle, seeing this comment made my day man. Thank you my g! Have an incredible day! 🙏🏽
Great work James. Always find your breakdowns to be thoroughly compelling and precise. I really enjoyed BOTH versions of Oldboy. Spike Lee did an exceptional job with the American version as well.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest fight scenes of all time. For more Korean cinema, I recommend "Burning" (2018) and "Chaser" (2008) and "The Day He Arrives" (2011)
What is the craziest movie you've seen?
This movie is great, but a lot of people didn't watch another great one called A Bittersweet life, it is great, Casino meet Scarface sort of, but better... Watch it, you'll love it.
That fight scene was not easy to film, they're literally breaking hollow dowels on his back and a lot of those punches look like they actually connect
6:11 "It's gonna be interesting how this comes together"
You have no idea!
OH YES, i was thinking about rewatching oldboy today! Great timing!
Nice!! We must’ve been on the same energy haha! What were your thoughts on it?
@@JamesVSCinema its an absolute classic. I love its unpredictable story and visceral characters and the plot twist that gets everyone in the end. I remember watching it as a teen and me and my friends being so horrified at the end. It has some of the most memorable cinematography I've seen. Also, don't watch the remake lol
James vs Cinema...go back and watch the very end.....the footprints in the snow.
This film is an adaption of the original Oldboy manga. That’s why they framed it so prominently before the hallway fight. Chan-wook Parks film are all masterclasses is style. Sympathy Mr Vengeance will always be my favorite.
20:58 *almost* the craziest movie you’ve ever seen?? Don’t leave us hanging bro...
Hahaha honestly may be a close call. Because man..this movie is insane man.
I've seen a couple of times. Honestly, it took me at least three tries to understand the story wholly.
I haven't seen it for more than ten years - and obviously, I remember it to great detail still...
Have you seen The Raid yet?? The mock up of the dude on the wall immediately reminded me of raid 2. Both fire and dope camera angle!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Those are actually on the current Patreon polls!!
one of greatest movies ive ever watched for sure
I don´t think anyone wrote a comment about it.... but the octopus scene was actually real. Apparantly he had to eat 4 live ones, before they got the scene right. That actor really goes out for his roles.
don't know if someone might have commented this already, but as u guessed this film is based on a Japanese comic book with the same title i believe. director Park is a master of storytelling and cinematography and has done a really awesome job of the adaptation
Split Diopter lens. A great techniqe, i love when it pops up. Recently saw it used in US to great effect
Ah yes that’s what it’s called!
Truly a masterpiece in filmmaking.
i just watched it tonight with my family... my father has been sitting on the sofa for 30 min and he still cannot believe what he just saw 🤣
Lmfaooo you have cursed him 😂
I struggled to know why I love this movie so much. Now I know thanks to you. It really feels like a real life manga. More than most real life anime movies
It's not like that. The original manga has a different color from the movie. The original manga does not have the violence and narrative like a movie.
Old Boy is #3 of my favorite movies of all time.
so, there's a list of films I made for myself, sort of unofficial trilogy if you will on a theme of love and hate. and all of the movies on this list are emotionally raw and intense and go progressively more crazy as the list goes. and the list is:
1 - OldBoy [2003]
2 - Balada triste de trompeta (The Last Circus in US) [2010]
3 - Possession [1981]
I highly recommend to watch all of these in that exact order. the last one is so overcharged with intense emotions that I had to pause a few times to have a breather.
also, fun fact - Tarantino was in the jury at Cannes for the screening of both the OldBoy and Balada. he gave Balada a standing ovation while OldBoy surprised him, by making him shed tears for the antagonist.
and a bonus recommendation - The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover [1989]
I don't include it in the 'trilogy' because (besides it wouldn't be a trilogy anymore) stylistically it's a totally different beast - like a mix of a theatre play and a renaissance painting come to life. but thematically and dramatically it fits well. great film.
Haha I can tell you didn't expect this. Great reaction.
Cheers Corey!! Definitely a wild ride!
Old Boy is a Japanese manga series written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi.
An octopus was definitely harmed in the production of this movie.
