For the last scene, the main actor Choi Minsik asked the director Park Chanwook whether Daesu still knew Mido's his daughter. The director didn't give him an answer or any direction on that and went on filming the scene since he wanted it to be an open ending. The main actor, Choi Minsik later said he had figured he could not have acted Daesu in that scene without settling his mind, so he acted while having an image of Daesu failing to lose his memory and still knowing the truth.
WonPorky I just finished the manga. It makes abit of sense. He hypnotized them to fall in love and then they really started to like each other, however if you remember there is a lock on a second hypnosis, so in the epilogue they show got dreaming where this gets unlocked by the “flowers” song and eri kills herself, a final blow from dojima to goto. He always wants to have that threat over him.

when i read the manga, i feel betrayed that the ending is kind of stupid. i mean yo wtf hahahahah. we waited for that long just to finally know that its really not that big of a deal. This also makes Old Boy movie adaptation 2003 a legendary
The Korean film is a master piece and the ending enhances it without the ending it is just another good movie. The pacing is right, the color everything it all seems surreal...pacing is so important in a film like this to believe how the character becomes broken to share his depression elation emotional thoughts and him falling in love. The US version does none of this rushes everything and doesn't leave you asking questions.
Killing the men with a toothbrush was pretty cool in the final scene too. And how he deafened that guy so he couldn't hear the leader's commands, forcing the leader to shoot him was pretty cool too. And that time he casually pulled a knife out of his own back
It's interesting to note that, while, in the manga, Ojisan and Eri are not explicitly revealed to be related, they still have the same distinct nose and, out of all the characters in the manga (however important or trivial), they are the only ones to have it. It's like Bram Stoker's Dracula : in the novel, Dracula and his female companions have the same distinct aquiline nose and it's never explained if they are family members - let alone the exact nature of their relationship (friends, father and daughters, teacher and apprentices or lovers). Also, even after they both learn their love was caused by hypnosis, they still decide to be a couple - though they still decide to go out of their way to keep their relationship hidden from every single person who learned about the hypnosis.

Seeing the flat and lifeless cinematography of the Spike Jonze version, the subpar editing, the generic soundtrack, the "just gimme my paycheck" acting and especially how laughably bad they handled the big reveal scene at the end will increase your appreciation for the original even more.
And if you really want to be offended, check out the blatant Bollywood ripoff of Oldboy entitled, "Zinda." Just search RUclips for Zinda fight scene or hammer fight scene. It's so fucking bad. They even give the Indian star the same clothes and haircut as Oh Dae-su. Then the director had the audacity to say that his movie wasn't a remake and gave no credit to the original film or the manga.

I love that each adaptation just has him locked up for longer and longer. It started with 10 years in the manga, 15 years in the movie, then 20 years in the remake. Let the poor man go.
Weird theory, could both main characters exist in the same universe? The movie and the film show the same building, with a floor that locks people away inside of it, but show two different people locked up by two different psychos.
I haven't healed from watching the movie yet. I don't remember any movie with such an emotional impact. I can't rewatch this movie. Especially his smile breaks me.
I loved the first adaptation of the manga the best cause it's what introduced me to the manga. And because the twist at the end was something I would have never guessed and caught me completely off guard. The only movie ever to have me shouting at the screen, "what?!".
Not word to word, but I still remember the ending line of Oldboy's letter to the hypnotic lady: "Even if I am a monster, don't I too, deserve happiness?"
YES! I LOVE the movie, but something that has always bugged me is that while Oh Dae-su is by no means an angle or great guy (ain't evil that is for sure) he wasn't the one that started spreading the rumor about Lee Woo-jin's sister. Yeah he saw them but it was his friend Joo-hwan started spreading it! I mean I get that Dae-su told what he saw but he also told his friend not to tell anyone, in more of a, "wow that was a odd thing I saw...oh well, BETTER NOT TELL ANYONE!" then changed schools cause he was moving! I know it's opinion, but the way I see it the guy you wanna luck up for really kicking it off is Joo-hwan! Maybe find Dae-su and have a few guys beat him up with a message of "keep your mouth shut!" I don't know that is just my opinion!
You're right but Woo-jin was never exactly in his right mind either. He just looked for someone to blame for his problems and Dae-su seemed like the perfect culprit. He eavesdropped, watched the sibling sex and ignited this mess. He also had daughter which Woo-jin could and did exploit. That drunk friend guy didn't have anyone (Woo-jin killed him anyways) and while he was guilty too, he didn't start the chain of events that led to the sister's death.
Music, Story, Cinematography, Acting, Dialogues 10/10 from 1st minute to last second totally eye sticking movie! Curiousity at peak. And you know new movie of this director is just out "Decision to leave" I mean come on! Just another awesome movie.. I just watched last night.
This is in my top 10 movies of all time. I just love and it's the movie that got me into oriental cinema. Masterpiece. Great work on the video, just a thing that I wanna point out: in the end of the movie Dae-Su, that asked the hypnotist to erase his memory, when first hugs Mi-Do, is happy cause he doesn't remember that she is his daughter, but then is face morphs into disgust/terror, almost as in the end the hypnosis didn't work out. But then it ends and you're left with that mixed feelings, I think that part is absolutely brilliant, whether it was real or not. Fav channel on youtube by the way. Awesome work, everytime.
Oldboy and his whole unofficial revenge trilogy is amazing. They're not just your normal revenge thrillers but ones that examine its destructive nature on how it can lead people to the most dangerous places.
I honestly watched the S. Lee version wondering why they even bothered. Most of the changes were so minute, it may as well have been a shot for shot remake (Ala Psycho w/ Vince Vaughn) and what was changed was for the worse. Admittedly, I went in expecting it to be worse so was pleasantly surprised it wasn't another "Ring" scenario but... it was utterly pointless and I could've used that time watching the Korean version.
the spike lee one isnt bad. it just serves no purpose. It would be a perfectly acceptable if not weird film if the original film and manga didn't exist
Quite honestly, I think I would have really enjoyed Lee's version... Had it not been for Park's. Lee's is entertaining. Park's is an award winning (at the Cannes festival, mind you, basically the Academy Awards for artsy movies) masterpiece.
Daisu's look at the end isn't really happiness. I always saw it as a soft realization that nothing will ever be ok for him ever again. So, kind of like the ending of the manga but in a completely different context. He has the memory of her being his daughter removed, so they can be together. And she hugs him and he smiles, but it's a manic unhinged smile tinged with sadness and regret that will never ever leave him and he will never know why. That is why old boy is so powerful. Because it has a really really deep ending.
Wow, what a coincidence! I’ve just watched this masterpiece with my brother the day before this video was uploaded, he had never seen it before (for me it was a rewatch).

Except, they're talking here about adaptations. Movies taking ideas that originate from books and turning them into new pieces of art while keeping contact with the feel of the source material. What you're talking about is a novelisation of a blockbuster, made to sell money, and of course the book is going to be different, since the movies were so poorly written, they would've had to be brain dead to sell the script beat for beat.
Park chan-wooks movies are so awesome I was so disappointed when spike lee remade it but you knew it was gonna be way different not in a good way when they cast sam l jackson in a originally really small role, the rest of the trilogy is great too though

when i read the manga, i feel betrayed that the ending is kind of stupid. i mean yo wtf hahahahah. we waited for that long just to finally know that its really not that big of a deal.
This also makes Old Boy movie adaptation 2003 a legendary
The first time I saw the corridor fight scene I was in literal awe. I don't think any scene from any movie ever made me feel such a thing.
That continuous fight scene in the movie is freakin awesome! Glad you guys did this one. Loved the movie but haven't read the manga yet.
Oldboy, in my top5 of all time fave films. Great vid.
"The manga is crazy long! at 8 volumes!"
Really? 8 volumes is "crazy long?"
Carlos Hernandez
Yes.
Long for lazy ass bitches.
Naruto is 70 volumes
@@XxsasukevsnarutoxX I think one piece beats it no?
@Decriminalize Darwinism Why are you getting so angry at a simple statement, a story being long is subjective to the person reading it.
I can't, for the life of me, tell their voices apart
Felipe Trindade i started watching michael from way back when on his tasted series, why would you eat that, so you would think im familiar with his voice and can tell them apart right. N o p e. Clint and michael sound EXACTLY the same.
There were *two* guys?
i forgot that there were two narrators when i watched this video lmaoo
WHAT
I'm so sorry WTF???????
I want to encourage fans of this movie to also check out the hollywood remake, preferably watch them both back to back. Seeing the flat and lifeless cinematography of the Spike Jonze version, the subpar editing, the generic soundtrack, the "just gimme my paycheck" acting and especially how laughably bad they handled the big reveal scene at the end will increase your appreciation for the original even more.
Its Spike Lee not Jonze
Sai Ashwin i was about to comment this
And if you really want to be offended, check out the blatant Bollywood ripoff of Oldboy entitled, "Zinda." Just search RUclips for Zinda fight scene or hammer fight scene. It's so fucking bad. They even give the Indian star the same clothes and haircut as Oh Dae-su. Then the director had the audacity to say that his movie wasn't a remake and gave no credit to the original film or the manga.
Austen Green ive seen the terrible bollywood literal shot for shot ripoffs of the man from nowhere (korean action movie) and knight and day ( tom cruise and cameron diaz)....and people wonder y i bash bollywood
Those... eyebrows...
I love that each adaptation just has him locked up for longer and longer. It started with 10 years in the manga, 15 years in the movie, then 20 years in the remake. Let the poor man go.
Oldboy is my favourite film. It is without a doubt the one film I wish I could see again over and over again for the first time.
Weird theory, could both main characters exist in the same universe? The movie and the film show the same building, with a floor that locks people away inside of it, but show two different people locked up by two different psychos.
Could be. Except that the building is similar, not the same. Both of them happen in different countries but it could have happen in different places.
@@siegvash what if there's a cult consist of these rich guy that set up this kind of game in every country?
@@christopherfarrel264 It doesn't seem that far fetched since what is going on in reality seems even crazier nowadays 🤔
That was the conceit in Spike Lee’s remake-a concierge style prison service for the super rich, with hundreds of victims.
It’s obvious why the motives were changed in the film. Sadness over a choir audition wouldn’t of translated very well. Lol
Funny because he was also being toyed on I Saw the Devil. Brilliant actor!
This film has my favourite fight scene from any movie, that hall way is just beautifully shot and gruesome in equal measure.
To be honest i predicted that Mido was DaeSu's daughter quickly but never thought there would be a darker side to the story
I haven't healed from watching the movie yet. I don't remember any movie with such an emotional impact. I can't rewatch this movie. Especially his smile breaks me.
im really impressed theres no whats the difference about the wanted movie and comic
Your editing and software (not to mention the dynamic dialog), really made this Cinefix "What's The Difference" awesome.
@@tiaaaron3278 VERY GOOD POINT! I didn’t even think about that!
Music, Story, Cinematography, Acting, Dialogues 10/10
from 1st minute to last second totally eye sticking movie! Curiousity at peak.
And you know new movie of this director is just out "Decision to leave" I mean come on! Just another awesome movie.. I just watched last night.
You guys should do WANTED next. The comic and the movie are basically two different stories
you guys freaking did Old Boy!? This channel is honestly too cool to exist.
2003 oldboy is a masterpiece
The true intention of the film was more compelling than the manga.
Oldboy and his whole unofficial revenge trilogy is amazing. They're not just your normal revenge thrillers but ones that examine its destructive nature on how it can lead people to the most dangerous places.
This film is the proof where a movie can be better than the original manga.
One of the great movies I have ever watched
I wouldnt mind if this video also had the spike lee remake. Just for curiosity since this film went so bad its unbearable to watch the whole thing
I actually liked it and it got me pumped when the rumor that Josh Brolin was in the running to playing batman came out.
the spike lee one isnt bad. it just serves no purpose. It would be a perfectly acceptable if not weird film if the original film and manga didn't exist
that point could be made for anything the have covered on here
Quite honestly, I think I would have really enjoyed Lee's version... Had it not been for Park's. Lee's is entertaining. Park's is an award winning (at the Cannes festival, mind you, basically the Academy Awards for artsy movies) masterpiece.
Amazing movie, way better than the manga I say.
The pronunciation of Oh Dae Su is all over the place.
Taegyu An same with Goto lol its either like Gohdo or like “go to”.
Mashi the space kid most europeans can't pronounce caesar. Give them a break :p
My second favorite film of al time! Thank you Cinefix, best Christmas gift ever!
Man I just watched this movie today!
And it's on my recommendation!
Hmmmmmmmm
Daisu's look at the end isn't really happiness. I always saw it as a soft realization that nothing will ever be ok for him ever again. So, kind of like the ending of the manga but in a completely different context.
He has the memory of her being his daughter removed, so they can be together. And she hugs him and he smiles, but it's a manic unhinged smile tinged with sadness and regret that will never ever leave him and he will never know why.
That is why old boy is so powerful. Because it has a really really deep ending.
snowpiercer what's the difference
I love Oldboy. Great job as always
hey why don't you guys make "what's the difference " of Snowpiercer
Cool !!! It comes from a MANGA? But the movie is just UNIQUE , A PIECE OF ART, period.
The original manga reason for locking him up is so lame.
I love your channel, and the "What's The Difference" segments are greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Wow, what a coincidence! I’ve just watched this masterpiece with my brother the day before this video was uploaded, he had never seen it before (for me it was a rewatch).
One of the best movies I've ever seen! wow
(make a video abt Lolita - if with both movies, better - plssss)
my favorite movie ever. finished the manga a few years ago and liked it as well. but seriously lets forget the remake, its such a kick in the nuts for cinema
Hmm i might have to read the manga, knew of it but never bothered with it, when i watched the original. Might do so now.... But with that..manga vs moive -- "ichi the killer" will that one ever get covered then?
I saw a post on reddit talking about oldboy on my phone at work, didn't reply to it, didn't look it up, didn't even click on it now here I am at home and this is the first thing recommended to me, wtf google, wtf.
PLEASE DO THE GODFATHER
Oldboy is a thing of art one of my favourite films of all time 😊❤❤❤
Gotta do ichi the killer
0:20 That pause was perfect
Nice. Do Charlie and the Chocolate Factory next!
Not much, really. It stick EXTREMELY close to the book, right down to the song lyrics. THe only difference is the addition of Willy Wonka's backstory
The plot twist was sooo insane its something that still traumatize me untill this day
Do the star wars prequels books vs movies. I'd like that.
NET Alliance - Star Wars Fun I'm surprised they haven't done that yet
The revenge of the sith boook wassssss sooooo much better like fuck Palpatine sounded wayyy more convincing in the book of how he turn anakin
The thing is, this is more about movies based on books. That is a book based on movies. Slightly different. Still an interesting thought.
Novelization? Revenge of the Sith novel was pretty good actually.
Thanks for the Xmas gift... I've been suggesting you guys cover this since 2016. Happy Holidays, Cinefix!
great film, a modern masterpiece!! I refuse to watch the American take on it though!!
THIS MAN HAD THE MANGA DOWNLOADED..... I NEVER THOUGHT OF DOING THAT!!
Whats the difference trainspotting!!!!
Park chan-wooks movies are so awesome I was so disappointed when spike lee remade it but you knew it was gonna be way different not in a good way when they cast sam l jackson in a originally really small role, the rest of the trilogy is great too though
Is oldboy still on netflix? i would love to watch it again but with friends this time!
John TheBear Yep!
Not on Canadian Netflix :(
Just watched it last night as well after seeing CineFix's video on adaptations. I went in knowing nothing about it and man I was not expecting what I saw. Haha.
We need to boycott Canadian Netflix. As free as Canada tries to preach itself to be, its looking more and more oppressive each year. Freedom of Speech for instance.
I skipped this one because I thought it was going to be about the difference between the U.S. and South Korean version. But this time when it popped up on my suggestion feed I remembered the original movie was based on a Manga and since this show's been about films adapted from books I realized I made a mistake and here I am! :D I've been curious about the original manga but never bothered to look it up so thanks for making another great video!
Unpopular opinion here. The Spike Lee Oldboy wasn't terrible. In fact I feel he explained the ending better than the original did. Does that mean I'll watch that over the original? Hahahaha no. Fuck no.
Yes!!! Such a great movie! Watched it randomly on netflix, loved it!!
I've seen some great cinematography in TV shows lately and would love it if you guys did some more videos with that! House of Cards, Westworld, Broadchurch, Black Mirror, to name a few/
At the end of the film, Dae-su's smile turns into a look of pain so it is unclear whether the hypnosis really worked. Dae-su isn't happy.
the manga is better 🤷🏾♂️.
the film got me super into Korean thrillers, there's just this atmosphere and tone that Korean thrillers pull off to make them, well.. more thrilling~
No one wants to talk about that dumpster fire remake.
You know you liked it.
Yourmoviesucks does
@EditRepublic that's what your mom says when she sees me
@@_wkja Altho the remake has very familiar MCU cast it's still stupid.
So basically Movie > Manga
The original Korean version of the film is sickly awesome. Work of art.
I'd love to see an anime of this.
i thought that sounded like a terrible idea but upon further investigation, yes pls
it would probably be a action/mystery, we need more animes like that in this day an age?
nah, it just needs to be a mindfuck. would probably be pretty successful too like death note or code geass without the supernatural stuff.
how about a action/mystery/mindfuck theme for this anime?
A noir story
I'm really glad you paused a second time before the mido spoiler, and holy shit that was great.
I've never read the manga, but the film seems way more thoughtful. Maybe i'm too biased because i love the movie so much..
Give the manga a try. It's really well done.
I got a t-shirt, iphone case and tattoo of this movie, so... I kinda liked it ahah
I'm really happy you finally talked about it
do Wanted comic vs Wanted the garbage movie
buckleal that movie is awesome??
Max Gonzo are you asking me if the movie called Wanted inspired by the graphic novel of the same name is "awesome", if so then no that movie is not "awesome".
if you are countering my previous comment then you probably never read the graphic novel and you have terrible taste in movies.
That movie was awful, cheese-ridden, and fun.
Lol that opening scene with the guy jumping across buildings. Biggest "WTF IS GOING ON" ever.
