James Bond's Epic Battle with Self Doubt and Doctor No | What's the Difference?

  • No Time to Die finds James Bond, Her Majesty's most infamous double-oh, retired in Jamaica. But we're going all the way back to the first time Sean Connery as 007 found his way to the Caribbean Island in 1962's Doctor No. But while it was the first Bond adventure in the film franchise, it was the sixth book author Ian Fleming published. So how did the filmmakers set about adapting the middle of Bond's novel career for the beginning of his film escapade? Dust off your license to kill because it's time to ask, "Difference... What's the Difference?"
    Written by Clint Gage. Edited and animated by Casey Redmon.

    The Bond in the books is infinitely more interesting than the movies. You are also missing how both Bond and the narrative don't shame Honey for wanting to be a sex worker. Bond merely warns her of some expenses the job has like bribes for cops. Bond is genuinely fond of her and is happy when she later has success and marries a doctor. This is a thing of his character, he doesn't understand why slutshaming is a thing and doesn't blink at women's sexual history.
    Also he kills the giant squid with a DINNER knife.

    • @Pencilman246
      @Pencilman246 3 года назад +24

      Yes, Bond in the novels grows from his adventures, and he has a lot of interesting things going on in his head a lot of the time. Most of the books have a theme relating the adventure to Bond’s personal growth, whereas, as this video points out, the movies just have Bond as a suave, confident action hero with no issues and barely any growth whatsoever. That’s the great thing about the Craig films, they actually explore his psychology in the same way that Fleming did.

    • @truthgiovanni6354
      @truthgiovanni6354 3 года назад

      How can he not understand there is slutshaming? Is he a Kindergarten kid in the novel? Because at that slutshaming was normal?

      That is sort of the issue I had with the movies for years I thought Bond was silly with all his puns one liners and over the top gadgets. It wasn't until they released the books in those cool pulp covers just before Craig's first outing so I picked the first one up for my dad than wound up reading it and was amazed. Bond felt more like a person and when I read more I got Bond and was so happy they made a closer version of him with Daniel Craig.

    Perhaps it's my memory failing, but 21 years ago, while taking 11 hour drives to visit my girlfriend, I would take out a few books on tape (and they were on tape in those days) from the local public library, and Dr No was one of the books I listened to, though I don't remember ever finishing it. You didn't mention it, but one of the scenes I remember (or mis-remember) was as assassination attempt on him involving giant centipedes in his hotel room bed. Excellent video. Dr. No is definitely one of the James Bond movies that is more or less faithful to the book. The first several movies follow the books fairly well but by the Roger Moore era they were pretty much based on them in name only. It'd be hilarious if you did a video comparing some of those movies to their respective books. Like the movie The Spy Who Loved Me is completely different than the book. The book is about a Canadian woman Vivian Michele who recounts to the reader how she lost her virginity in England and is now at a motor lodge in Vermont and is being held prisoner by two mobsters there to burn down the hotel for the insurance money and James Bond who's tracking them from Toronto even doesn't show up until the last third of the book. The plot of the movie couldn't be more different haha.

    Me and my brother joked that they'd cut back to Quarrel every so often to see if he was still on fire, or smoldering flesh. By the end of the movie, we decide that he was still burning.

      @@tec5x5 I respectfully disagree. It's literally just Vivian talking about how her love life is going and how she lost her virginity for the first third of the book, then the two mobsters show up at the the motor lodge she's at in the second third, and Bond doesn't even show up until the last third. It was also such an insane detour away from the SPECTRE/Blofeld storyline. It was my least favorite to read. I was so glad to finish it and start reading One Her Majesty's Secret Service. Ian Fleming himself said the book was terrible so I rest my case haha.

    Two more things that weren't mentioned in the video are that in the book there are two more covert attempts to assassinate Bond. Dr. No sends Bond a basket of fruit which is laced with poison and a giant poison centipede is placed in his bed instead of a spider.
