I just bought the ECHO RB60 for $111 from Home Depot. I am planning on using Milorganite fertilizer (I have one acre of property) for my lawn this summer. Thank you for the video and breakdown of this product. I just started treating my grass over the last two years and what a difference makes. I started cutting my grass higher (3-3.5 inches in spring and 4 inches during the hot summer). That right there made a HUGE difference. I also had my lawn treated with weed preventer in early spring and then fertilizer in summer, as well as a grub and tick treatment (we have dogs). I had my landscaper use a heavy roller and roll our yard to help flatten the lawn and soil (also crushes the mole tunnels!!). Aeration and overseeding in the late fall and then a winter fertilizer application. My wife said to me the other day, "our lawn looks like a golf course". Even my neighbor has told me how amazing our lawn and grass looks. He wants me to come over to his house and give him some tips LOL.
My take on the RB-60 after using it for an entire season: It’s not perfect but you get what you pay for in the end (I paid $99 for mine). I’ve owned all of the cheap scott’s spreaders and always had issues from the hopper getting locked open to uneven spreading and even fert lines when the product would get locked up in the wheel wells. I now own the Echo and completely agree that there’s issues but they’re easy fixes: Zip ties on the propeller to scoop the fert at the bottom, velcro on the edgeguard as it tends to fall down on occasion and you don’t realize until its too late, and tighten up the spring to prevent the latch from locking open which I’ve had happen several times. After all that’s done, you shouldn’t have any issues, at least I don’t anymore. Watch out with the spreader settings too; they say it’s comparable to Scott’s edgeguard but I found I always have to dial down a setting or two lower to match my old Scott’s edgeguard. Now I have a beefier hopper, even spreading, much farther throw and pneumatic tires that don’t get fert stuck in them. Again, you get what you pay for and for $99, this thing’s a steal.
I’m surprised there isn’t a standard spreader setting across all brands. Some sort of uniform system that all brands can use to make things consumer friendlier.
Got one at Home Depot online. Shipped to the house and taxes, $115.00. Comes assembled. Just screw the handle on, no tools required. Haven’t used it yet but just playing with it I noticed the obvious same things you talked about. I think it’ll work out great for my 7500 sqft.
I purchased the rb100s (stainless frame). Tires are much bigger, handles up higher for taller person. Dealer assembled mine as well, it wobbled like a Sunday morning drunk. Removed all the cheesy metric bolts drilled out all bolt holes to 5/16" installed stainless bolts, viola, wobble gone. Also they now have a grease zerk on the transmission. I pumped echo hedge trimmer grease into it. No problems so far.

Excellent Review: I bought Echo last summer and I have been very happy with it. You are right it rolls nicely on St Aug. When I get to the last bit in the hopper I throw a little sand / compost in the hopper and that usually helps dump out the remaining fertilizer.

I am glad I bought this spreader. I like it, the ease of rolling, no clogging (yet)...it's way better than that cheap one i'd been using for years where the thing kept clogging up.

Threw down some Flagship today. I love the prill size! (That’s what she said). The fert looks great in the hopper. The prills are small, uniform in size and flow easily. There is a general white, black and blue color to it. The white makes it super easy to see where you’re slinging. Best of all it smells like success.
Same sentiments and I do still love it. I picked it up for $109 free shipping from the PED site. I also modified the agitator with some cabinet shelf brackets that made a huge difference. I still shake but not nearly as frequent and can get much lower in the throw before it’s needed. For the money it’s a good competitor but all spreaders have their advantages and weaknesses.
I had the bucket Earthway, but I was not sold on the spread. Like he states above if you have a lot of area to cover then the throw distance on the echo is a huge plus. Saves me from having to make odd passes.

Bought a Echo RB60 today. Just threw down four bags of Milogornite. I like it but you are right, when the fert gets low, you have to shake the spreader to get it to drop.
I've got the Echo RB100S and it's been amazing so far... definitely hammers out the fert. My biggest complaint on that model is the adjustment knob for rate control. Such a bad clamp down design, it moves from time to time if you don't keep an eye on it.. all they need to do is make a locking type design on the different rate settings and it would be fine. Very simple fix on a rather bad design in my opinion.
Exactly my experience with this spreader, and many others in varying price ranges. My vote still goes to Spyker. I also much prefer their single opening over the 3 hole drop system.
My Spyker is 10 years old and still operates and looks like NEW Stainless grate in bottom, nice cover and stainless steel hardware and longer handle for operator...What's NOT to like?
The wheels are nice…it throws really good for large areas. The impeller isn’t perfect…some people add zip ties to get it to reach lower. I find I have to bump/bounce it when less than half full. Also it sucks for lime applications and the door/discs jam (open) a lot so be prepared to keep going or do the coat coat hanger mod (lawncaresuccess) so you can manually close it. You have to rinse the dust out between uses so they don’t jam (they need to fix that or swap to a rod actuator instead of the cheap spring) Honestly I trust my old rusting under the deck scotts cheapy more (throws lime pellets no problem) It does ok with prilled fert…sometimes you might have to bounce it to get it to shut off but not a lot if you hosed/rinsed it after last use. It looks great holds a lot pushes great throws great…but don’t assume it’s really off without checking and avoid using it for dusty pelletized lime apps (unless you do the mod…and even then keep it clean) If they fixed those 2 issues (impellervand shut off discs jamming…read add a lever actuator) they’d have a great spreader even if it went up another $20 allso adding a back tubular bar instead of the two feet would be nicer and more stable when stationary…especially on less than flat turf.
Allyn just purchased this spreader. Man, at. 5 setting, I have to move at a fast walk to get down 3#/1000 sqft. Looked at my neighbor with his Scott mini today and he was at a slow walk. I do that with this beast, hopper is empty after 1 pass lol!!!
The RB60 worked great - except for the issues you listed in the video. Kind of annoying to have to shake the spreader so much. But, it's built really well, it felt sturdy and the tires are awesome. It definitely throws much further than my old Scott's Standard did. The edge guard worked well too - except I forgot to put it back up after my trim pass just for a few rows. Overall, very good spreader - just need to modify the agitator. The Stress Blend was the first fert to go in it. Went down fast at the 5.5 setting. Smells like Milo but a tad stronger. Looking forward to seeing the iron kick in.
I am using the 7-0-20 for summer stress on my Zoysia lawn in the Midwest, not for spring green up. Using Andersons PGF Complete 16-4-8, and that has partial slow relese.
Paid $111.99 at HD; tried and failed to locate one online or with a dealer at the MSRP. I will be comparing this to my old Edgeguard and last years Earthways purchase (based on your reco); both are two small for my 1+ acre property. I am hoping the spread pattern of the Echo gets the furt out there with less passes. I also think I am going to like the wider container, even though you pointed out the need to bump to keep the flow going. The Earthway was to high and concentrated in a narrow area, which made the spreader hard to control when applying to one 12,500 sf area of lawn that has a 9 foot elevation change. The Echo has been sitting in my garage for three weeks, we are still under snow cover. Thanks for the review, I am feeling better about the decision to give this a try. I will be selling the Earthways (used two times), this would be great for a smaller and flatter yard.
I bought this spreader and returned it 2 days later. Had the problem with the door getting stuck open and I hated that I would have to do the shaking to get the product to go down on it as well.
I got the $30 scotts lil spreader for my 6k sq ft yard. For $30 it does everything I need it to do. With that said, the strip of grass that's between my street and my sidewalk, the spread doesn't cover it well. I mean, it covers 75% of it with one pass, so the second pass is over spreading like 50% of the strip.
That slope in the hopper on your prototype is dang near gold standard. The hopper on my Spyker spreader is sloped enough to have to shake it as well, and since it has a longer handle and is slightly heavier so it’s harder to shake it. (That’s what she said)
I agree with you and your Spyker. I have one that is over 10 years old and looks and operates like new. STAINLESS grate in bottom to fend off those mysterious clumps, nice cover in case you get caught out in a sudden FL rainstorm, Yes it was a bit more expensive than the orange machine for 130.00, but the handle is longer too. My neighbor bought one of those orange Echo and took it back after ONE use and bought a Lesco... so to each his own... Great customer service from Spyker too.
I have found if you have a steal or fine plastic tub if you wax it (like a car) the granules don’t stick as bad to the side. Haven’t noticed any adverse effect of wax and product together or lawn quality.
Used my new earth way 2600a for the first time today doing my prodiamine app and I had to do a lot of bumping. My measurements and walking speed were spot on for my first ever app though so that’s a success in my book!
For anyone else with this issue, treat the handle that closes the gate like a bow and arrow... You have to let it flick off your fingers so it slams shut. Same method works well on the cheap Scott's spreaders
I see you said the edge guard isn’t something you’d really ever use. You were the one that taught me all about the trim pass with your DIY edge guard! What changed Al? Or did you master your equipment and you can pull it off without needing the aid of the edge guard?
Same issue here. I’ll get over it. One issue I’m not sure how to overcome however is there’s a weed and feed that I have used that is so fine even the smallest setting is not small enough. This has caused me to have to drag out my God awful Scott’s spreader.
I’m looking to downgrade my lesco spreader, picked it up for the low low on marketplace but the swath is way too much for my lawn.. I’m throwin all my fert in the street and my driveway! Based on what you said, I think the earth way would be a best fit for me with the 3-4 foot spread. Thanks!
Thanks Al! Been debating on this one for a while. i think you just sold me on it. Love my EW 2600, but definitely need something bigger with a wider throw.
I recently bought a Chapin 70 lb capacity (round tub) spreader for around 150.00. Very stout piece of equipment and it too throws at least 6-8 feet to both sides. It's insane! Actually don't need it to throw that far out. It has two yellow hole drop closures on the bottom to supposedly allow some control over left or right throw pattern. Great idea but they're useless, doesn't change much at all. So, this has caused me to slow down a little while doing my first trim passes so I don't sling product out into a non customers yard or all the way across the street. As you've said so wisely, learn your land/products/tools. I would not buy it again, Like you said, there's no perfect spreader but for me, I'm saving my money for a Lesco or Spyker.
I'm guessing the fertilizer is sticking to the plastic towards the end due to some moisture. When I purchase this spreader I'm going to try putting a coat of car wax on the inside to see if that helps.
Ya know, one of the problems with my Scotts spreader is the small wheels, the wire back stand that doesn't work very smoothly in St. Aug. I only use it 4 or 5 times a year, so I suppose I'll just stay with it. But it is a PITA! Funny, you mention the 'slope' issue. It's a problem on my Scotts as well. Still ... all things being equal ... kind of a first world problem!
Prosumer.. nice lawn as always. Echo makes goo stuff I think u got a good machine. I use the echo 770 backpack blower with hip throttle its legendary. Also have the CS 400 chainsaw and the hc2020 hedge trimmer all good gear. The lawns here in California are typically small because of water cost so I just use a little battery powered Scott handheld spreader to fert.
Just bought one of these, and for some reason, the gate gets stuck in the open position. Looks like the fertilizer is getting stuck in between the two plates. Any ideas on how to fix it? Tried throwing down the 12-12-12 today, and had to stop. Thank you!
Looks like a solid spreader al. I am definitely in the market for a new spreader. I had multiple issues with streaking with my $35 Scott’s spreader. Great review, and congrats with everything going on with yard mastery!!
I can't believe you didn't do the lawn dance with the echo like you do in a video a few yrs ago lol. I believe the trigger sticking is user error,. If you don't clean it ,fertilizer, if it sits on that plastic it will stick to it
Should have bought this spreader two years ago from my dealer. It was selling for $80!! Now I'm trying to find it and it's selling between $170 - $200 :/
So which do you prefer, the Echo or the Earthway. I have a 2150 which is a beefier, commercial version of the 2600A I think, but it is heavy, especially when it has 45-60 pounds of fert on board. Your thoughts?
SHOULD I FERTILIZE NOW??? I’m in Houston Texas and we just had an entire week of snow and freezing which is unheard of and now all of our st. Aug is either dead or super dormant and tons of shrubs and plants dead or burned or something. I’m not sure because I’ve never seen it happen before being from Houston. We were 15 degrees last week and are back up to 70 degrees this week. What should I do??
Hey Allyn, I know you recommended the stress blend 7-0-20 for Texas, but how come not the Starter Blend 12-12-12... seems more balanced and both can be used for 3 seasons (Spring, Summer and Fall). Love to know your thoughts
The starter is very high quality fert - has AMS nitrogen and SOP for potash. Many many soils I encounter though don't need the phos. In that case, I recommend the 7-0-20. But if you need some phos because a soil test tells you that you do, then for sure the 12-12-12 would be a solid choice.
@@TheLawnCareNut I did a soil test in December and my NPK was N - Optimal Levels; P - Low Levels; K Very Low Levels. By the way, what is AMS Nitrogen, a more faster acting Nitrogen punch compared to the Water Soluble/Insoluble solutions?
@@axg038200 Ammonium Sulfate and it hangs better in the soil and in my experience produces a green/blue color compared to urea. If you have a P deficiency then for sure the 12-12-12 is the way to go. Keep it at the low rate of 3lbs/1000 - you don;t need more than that to see a good visual result
@@TheLawnCareNut Thanks Allyn! One last question if you don't mind. I'm I keeping the 3lbs/1000 throughout the year, will I need to bump that up during the summer?
Good video I've been thinking of upgrading from my smalle Scott spreader. Also I like all the clips from the office, so masterfully Edited in. Love your new office. The height adjustable desk is the new office desk of the 2000 very ergonomic. I am in the commercial office furniture business I run large instals.
I actually ordered this (Echo RB60) a few weeks before you did this review. I have a question. I had an extra nut in the box....i was trying to figure out where it went but to no avail. On the axle, does it only have one bolt & nut on ONLY one wheel? So one wheel turns the machine, while the other free-wheels? It is not in local stores, so i can't go look at a floor model.
Seems like the prototype spreader had the right idea recessing the impeller, but apparently it gets too congested with product and jams. Put a high torque electric motor on it and that'll solve it. :/ Btw, good deep voice on the review. Sounds like the announcer on Cops or some other show. Can't quite place it.Very familiar though.
I for the life of me cannot get this spreader to stop sticking open. My main culprit is a generic 10-10-10 which isn't super small prills. I had a gentleman stop and talk to me one day and little did I know, this was the first time it stuck open. Pushed it once I was done talking and a whole impeller full of fert sling in one spot.. There wasn't enough water in the world to save that turf.
The bump and jiggle might not be that big of a deal on a flat lawn but it's really tiring on a hilly lot. I can't use this spreader , bumping and tilting and catching the back bar on the lawn. Mine gets jammed easily too, won't dispense at all sometimes. Overall, not anything I would buy again.
You know, I love all the reviews that you and many have done on hear about fertilizer spreaders. BUT! Unfortunately Scott’s has DOMINATED all retailers so bad - that’s all you can find?? If, I’m spending $150.00 Plus for a spreader- I want to see it in person! Frustrating...Also, you need to do a couple reviews on retractable hoses PLEASE! Rob (Northwestern Indiana) Thank you 😊
Ahh always a good day when Allyn posts. Anyway when we going to see update on your Zoysia and maybe a full scalp this year on it... and the church Bermuda, you going to scalp that too?
Cool track! I just bought an Echo string trimmer and it is an absolute gem. Spreader looks sweet too, but with our small-ish property, I'll be sticking to my lowly Scott's EdgeGuard Mini for now 😂
My Echo trimmer is 15 years old. It hasn't ever failed to start but I do think it's getting time to change the spark plug because it's the original. I run premixed gas.
@@MrErpman So far I've been running the ethanol free "engineered fuel" that's sold at Home Depot/Lowe's. Trimmer always starts on the first pull (after a few pulls on full choke first) which is pretty wild for a 2 stroke. 40:1 oil ratio seems to be best for the full throttle operation it mostly sees while edging.
For a 1 acre or less lawn in America I wanna upgrade my Scott's to a Spiker or the Earthway this season based on which one will make a clean 1st pass around the perimeter between those two. Last thing I want is to throw prills into the street or driveway so for me, having a really nice guard is important to get a nice an even green up with little waste. Any recommendations

I agree, Spyker is a good value.
My Spyker is 10 years old and still operates and looks like NEW
Stainless grate in bottom, nice cover and stainless steel hardware and longer handle for operator...What's NOT to like?
@@wojtek-33 yep, good plan and that way you also know you put fairly accurate pounds on the ground...
Which model Spyker do you own?
@@-killer Ergo-Pro
It'd be really awesome if you can make a video for us Texas that went through a freeze on how to rejuvenate your lawn after a freeze.
Used Lesco Commercial is the way to go IMO. I picked one up for $75 on Offer Up in good working condition.
Well, I’m happy to know that the emptying issue is not a user error on my part. Thx for the review.
Just got one, pretty nice! Put fix a flat in the tubes to keep them from leaking over time!
I got the same spreder and I paid $99.00 and free shipping. My opinion this spreder is dam good for the price 👌
That slope in the hopper on your prototype is dang near gold standard. The hopper on my Spyker spreader is sloped enough to have to shake it as well, and since it has a longer handle and is slightly heavier so it’s harder to shake it. (That’s what she said)
I see what you did there! 😀
Great review! @15:28 you're right, not sure why they dont design spreaders with more slope.
Just bought one! So much better than my previous Scott's spreaders! Thanks for a great review! 5 yr. residential warranty isn't bad, either.
I have found if you have a steal or fine plastic tub if you wax it (like a car) the granules don’t stick as bad to the side. Haven’t noticed any adverse effect of wax and product together or lawn quality.
I’m really digging the earthway spreader. Thanks for the review on this one.
Which model do you have? 2600aplus?
Used my new earth way 2600a for the first time today doing my prodiamine app and I had to do a lot of bumping. My measurements and walking speed were spot on for my first ever app though so that’s a success in my book!
I returned mine after 2 lawns. The return spring that closes the door wasn’t smooth or strong enough to close it well. I liked everything else though.
For anyone else with this issue, treat the handle that closes the gate like a bow and arrow... You have to let it flick off your fingers so it slams shut. Same method works well on the cheap Scott's spreaders
This was really helpful- Random question: What model are your Costa sunglasses in this video?
Allyn I am bummin'.......Lawn is covered with over a foot of the white stuff!!!!! Living Vicariously through you!!!!!!!
we were -18 last Monday we are 39 today. But had a fresh 5 inches last night. Havnet seen my grass in over a month.
I see you said the edge guard isn’t something you’d really ever use. You were the one that taught me all about the trim pass with your DIY edge guard! What changed Al? Or did you master your equipment and you can pull it off without needing the aid of the edge guard?
I thought the same thing. I see the new earthways don’t have the edge guard like my old 2600
Big Al , I wonder if you tried polishing the inside of the spreader with a ceramic polish it will make things slide easier ?? Worth a try dude
Good idea. Works on snow shovels lol.
@@BenNawrath yeah saw Chris Fix do it ! 😂
@@Gixer750pilot me too! I’ve used silicone spray on snow equipment really well too. But I don’t think I’d want to do that with fert....
Thanks!
Have you tried the tilting down like Alan explained or would that work for your spreader?
@@randyman8984 yep, that’s my only option at the moment but it still has a crazy wide spread
I got this spreader first day I put Milorganite in it and the cable snapped. My dealer did replace it. But that made me worry. No problem since
Hello, So as of today you still recommend the Echo rb60???? or what Spreader will you recommend for a normal low budget user (+/- 150US$)???
Have they fixed this issue?
South Texas froze last week, this week we are in the 80's. How long to wait to see if my St. Augustine survived and apply Stress Blend.
I'm curious about the prototype unit you showed. Now that a year has passed, did it ever make it to production? If so, what brand/model is it? Thanks
Wondering the same thing?
She throws well! Love the Fl sky 😍
If that prototype spreader had a cap over the intake, it should help with the feed problem.
Sunday Fun Day !!!
The Aug is lookin mighty good for the winter we had. Spring in bound!!! Can’t wait for the time change. Evening mows 😎🤘🏼
you know it! mowing is not far away!
Your facility is very impressive!
I have a Lesco that needs to be put together yet..... Still snow up here, I have some time.
The shake method to keep it flowing is the same I have to do with my yardworks. I've been cheap but its time to replace it for sure.
Amazing radio voice :-) Nice review.
Can I put salt in that spreader? Nothing but snow here.
Now I'm trying to find it and it's selling between $170 - $200 :/
have you tried that Image product on your Provista? Used two times for sedges, and yellowed up the Provista pretty good both times...
Allyn you livin the dream brother!...beautiful day🌞...Lawn lookin sweet!
Great voice over work!
ha ha! thanks bro!! I like to flex it sometimes.
@@axg038200 no just keep it there - you will see plenty of good results without going crazy.
Thanks Bro! I prefer to stand for sure when I can - maybe it's a short guy thing ha ha!
If yard mastery ever get to office up this way call me I will build it and set it up for you.
Good stuff this, thought the bump and dump was a industry standard, time to bump up a level in spreading. Cheers for now!
LCN! Help us Texans out who have a Bermuda lawn that was just frozen for a week. Is there anything special we should do?
Where did you get the edging pieces around your tree and flower bed? I haven't seen anything like this at HD or Lowes.
I had it shipped to the house for extremely less. 99$ plus tax from Home Depot. Thanks for the review. I love the inflated commercial voiceover 😂
Thanks bro! Yeah I think maybe going to the dealer you just pay more. Live and learn.
Image takes care of my dayflower quick. Dayflower can be pervasive but at least it's easy to take care of.
I agree, it runs fast and dies easy.
My lawn is full of weeds and crabgrass what should I put down first? Weed and feed or news seeds?
Any tips on how to eliminate the fert from sticking at the sides and then ya have to do the "bounce/jiggle" to get it down to the drop holes?
I was able to use my automotive ceramic coating for plastic trim on another brand spreader. Seemed to help some
I for the life of me cannot get this spreader to stop sticking open.
Rob (Northwestern Indiana) Thank you 😊
Has a lot of the cheapo Scotts features , keep bouncing it and it will break like all my Scotts did. I went to an Agri-Fab .
u think agri fab better than echo?
Ahh always a good day when Allyn posts. Anyway when we going to see update on your Zoysia and maybe a full scalp this year on it... and the church Bermuda, you going to scalp that too?
many updates coming! we are just getting warm here, zoysia took a bit of a beating over winter.
Echo now has the MSRP at $129.99
IMO nothing beats my 80lb hopper Lesco spreader.
You can return Amazon items to Kohl's no questions asked
I did not know that! That will make it easy to return all the big stuff my wife gets and doesn't like lol
🤣👆🏼
