New chick learning all of this as my husband has Young Onset Alzheimer’s and he took care of this stuff. Nobody told me it involved math! Lol! We have a very odd shaped big back yard and small front yard so hopefully after this video, I will “get it right”. I had hired a lawn guy last year and watched him put a few products down with a spreader.I saw my husband had one and asked someone how to apply which products to our lawn and when. Since lawn guy I tried wasn’t really honest, I felt I’d be wasting my money so I am learning to do it myself! Thank you for this video!
I will have to look into that. Last year I watched your video in weed be gone that I used to spray on my lawn last summer and it worked. It got rid of all the clover and other weeds from my lawn
Buying a spreader and throwing down pre-emergent and fertilizer for the first time ever this week. This video and the project lawn series from last year have been super helpful. Thank you!
Project lawn that is 80,000 sf had my interest. I have a larger lawn that I recently renovated. So many videos on RUclips are geared towards smaller lawns and some of the methods aren’t practical for large lawns as you mentioned in the video. Keep the updates coming!!
Ryan I appreciate the vids. The hubby thinks our lawn is looking better every year. I still struggle with spreader rates and how much I put down but I'm getting better. I live in the DC area and have a clay based lawn. Lordy the struggle is real. That clay in the summer is rough on.the lawn. And I have 3/4 zoysia on the front lawn and cool season fescue/bluegrass on my back yard. I literally have a bi-polar yard.
Under Construction is an obstacle that reduces the importance of the lawn. Pushing 90,000 sq.ft. I plan to just mow until August, then nuke the grass that is there. I plan to sow a stand of KBG shortly after as fall grass seems to be less labor and expense battling the weed pressure. On the fence about an irrigation system as 2 acres will be a small fortune. Great Vidya Ryan. Great production and detail. Cheers.
I think its easier for me to control the N and prodiamine output if i do them separately. Liquid pre em followed by granular fert a week later. And i love the tip about putting extra fert in spreader. Badass bro. Never even thought of that.
I use a LESCO Dithiopyr product. No spreader settings but it was easy to figure out & find what setting works for me. Afterwards I wrote the setting number on the bag.
Thanks again Ryan, I’m in central Minnesota and followed your videos last year, but couldn’t get rid of the crabgrass. I was hoping you’d put together a video for pre emergent on crabgrass. Soil temp is 45 degrees here, so I’m a few weeks behind you, but will follow your steps!
Glad you showed the before shots on the big project. I was feeling a bit ashamed of my beloved super turf 2. That yard is a monster of a project though, and has come a long way.
Great video Ryan! The prill size sure makes a difference on spreader settings. Brand “S” may be smaller and the herbicide sticks better to the weeds where brand “L” may be larger and doesn’t stick to the weeds then jambs the spreader open. Definitely a learning process and your videos do help no matter where or what we’re working on. Happy Easter and stay safe during Covid 19.
Man, that huge lawn looks like a lot of work. That would be quite an accomplishment to get that thing looking good. It'll be interesting to see how it looks in the fall. I think I would just cut it in half and figure out something else for the back of the property like trees, plants and grasses. Thats work too for a number of years but once you can get it established its mostly maintenance free. Also, that's a dream property for someone that is into growing food. Unlimited sun and more space than you would ever need.
Definitely need to see more of the large project area! Also I purchased the pdf book the other night. Will be printing it out soon to have a physical copy to have for reference

I really wanted to use that Scotts crabgrass preventer here on my lawn in Europe. Unfortunately it is not available here. Any ideas on good alternatives here in the Netherlands?
Hey Ryan, im in southern california and put some fescue down 3 weeks ago it was overseeding and looks great, about to cut it tomorrow..there are like 2 spots that look like a cat digged in and didn't grow, how can i fox that? seed again in those spots or give it its 1st cut and wait?
I applied Scott’s turf builder halts crabgrass preventer with lawn food to my yard. After I applied this, I followed up with peat moss. Did I make a mistake by applying peat moss after?
Great video Ryan! You have been a great guide through the spring season. Soil temp is 50 degrees here in Indiana and the crabgrass is already present in my yard. Should I go with this pre emergent or look at post emergent solutions? I made the error of already putting down overseed/fertilizer!
The neighborhood project lawn is looking great. The big project lawn well, that should be interesting. Personally myself I’m curious how that is going to pan out. It looks rough but certainly not horrible. Curious which tall fescue seed you went with because it could also be the germination rate that contributed a little to that random patchiness even near the house which I’m sure was watered. Sun/heat, water, and good seed to soil contact are easy to handle in small chunks. A massive lawn like that doesn’t happen overnight without a LOT of care.
It's high end seed from United...we are WAY ahead of last year in that specific area we were focused on last year so I'll be interested to see how it looks by winter. It all depends on budget which I am not in charge of...haha
Crabgrass starts germinating once temperatures reach 50-60’s that’s why it’s only recommended to put down in early spring I live in NY. And I’ve put down mid February when temps break if we get snow eventually snow melts and any left over crabgrass fertilizer will soak into the soil giving you an early start on lawn care especially if you want to squeeze in a spring overseed in between fertilizer applications
@@ryanknorrlawncare Are you expected to get any snow to stick down there? We are looking at a trace-1" up here in Cedar Falls. Didn't stop me from doing some work yesterday though... First cut of the season for me, as well as threw down the pre-emerg anticipating the precip. Felt good to get back in the lawn!
Hi Ryan, great advise on pre emergent. I am in Nova Scotia,Canada. Temp is still around 40-50 deg. I want to overseed soon. What comes first, pre-emergent or overseed. I usually cover my seed with some Peat moss. Will that defeat the purpose. Cheers, Greg
Thank you for your videos. I'm still confused on knowing the correct math for product application. I have some new bags of fertilizer that I purchased last year at a local seed store that closed. I have 4,000 sqft on the back of my house and 2,500 on the front. The bags of fertilizer say 16-20-5 (50 lbs) and the other 29-0-4 (42 lbs) how do I know how much (lbs) do I need for each area?
At the 8:48 mark: "So you're probably thinking to yourself right now, this seems like a lot of work." Ha ha! Yeah, but that's what you do when you are a perfectionist. I've done the same thing. Thanks for the video.
Hey Ryan .. I applied Scott’s turf builder crabgrass control and after watching this video realize that there is a lot of nitrogen in that product and it shows the grass grows fast .. what product do you suggest for my next application to prevent dandelion and broad leaf weeds?
May be wrong based on a quick google search. Tenacity can be used at seeding. Otherwise should wait until it has been mowed twice. Sorry for confusion.
Ryan, I am good on the crabgrass prevention and I am now going into late spring/ summer with large bare spots but there is a lot of ST Aug runners here and there, so I know it will fill in quick. My question, HOW MUCH WATER should I be putting on these areas per week? I have new inground irrigation setup with 1/2" twice per week. Gulf south MS, all St. Aug. pre-ermg is all down for fall and spring, first fert app easter w/e. THANKS
I always feel so torn about throwing down herbicides that impact pollinator weeds, like dandelion. Do you compensate by planting pollinator-friendly flowers or such? I did 2 apps of pendulum last fall because I have a horrible poa problem that makes me wanna pull my hair out and I'm going to use a preemergent this season,, but I felt so guilty that I'm planting a windlflower garden and bought a bee house.
You mentioned prodiamine not being great at broadleaf prevention like dandelions. Have you ever mixed in isoxaben as an extra preemergent for broadleaf weeds? I know it's usually associated for use with broadleaf but I don't know for sure how effective it is.
Get that bluegrass and thick as you possibly can and it may start to choke it out...otherwise you are down on your hands and knees painting the quack blades with roundup...not much fun :(
Good segment. 👍🏼 Do you ever hose out your Scotts spreader? I do and it sheds off rusty water from internal metal near the wheels and bottom. I got a new one and it did the same thing. Were you calling for your mother at the end? 🤪
If I put pre-emergent crabgrass preventer down in the spring won’t I have to worry about it affecting the seed I planted in the fall of last year with over seeding?
Hello, I have been binge watching all your videos lol.. We just re-seeded 2 days ago, how long after should we use fertilizer? And our yard is in bad shape with weeds, we are just doing our best to do what we can with it. Feeling hopeless 😩
Hey Ryan.. So , I live in New Jersey. Its spring time now. Average air temps are around 55-60 degrees. I've done some patch work already (from the dog) , & its germinating nicely. At 1:44 you mentioned that using pre-emergent with fertilizer will cause the grass to grow quickly (as the summer approaches).. Do you have something specific that you suggest? Because I want to get rid of the crabgrass, but would also like my lawn to grow faster. And yes, I mow my lawn myself, & can keep up with the growth. The other thing I wanted to ask you. I have a mini Scott's push seeder. How can I avoid the spreading from spreading too wide of an area? Can I keep the spreading somehow to just the width of the spreader?? Thanks buddy.. Appreciate you.. John
Hey Johnny, I landscape in New York and New Jersey. If you didn’t put a starting fertilizer down when you seeded, I would use 21-22-4 staring fertilizer now. It’s a staring fertilizer, pre emergent, and weed killer all in one but doesn’t kill grass cool season grass then in 6 weeks fertilize again with 19-0-6 dimension + fertilizer to further prevent weeds through the summer. Usually I would reccomend using dimension with fertilizer now then again in 6 weeks but since you just seeded the dimension could interfere with the growth of the seed (dimension is a pre emergent).
Is there something you recommend that’s pet friendly and for existing weeds? Something like a 3 in 1? I’m a little late to the game as far as preventing them from growing for the year.
I'm counting down the days until the cool weather passes and then I can finally overseed/fertilize since I scarified --- just 5 more days :) My lawn needs to be revived after I tortured it!
See, always checking to see your latest videos lol! Now I have a pretty good question I think... “ if you have a sand based soil 80/20% , does it make sense that you can safely go over recommended fertilizer rates because it doesn’t hold as much and drains much faster, so you can fertilize more frequently?
You want to stick to recommended rates but may need to fertilize more often...the recommended rate is there to make sure it's appropriate for the lawn and doesn't cause any damage
Thank you for the video! Something I am confused about is if I wait until soil temps are 70 degrees for the second application (typically late May I think) will I still be able to overseed in early September? Should I just put the second application down earlier to ensure I’m not overseeding less than 4 months after applying pre emergent?
Usually the heat of summer and rainfall breaks it down in the soil but also utilizing core aeration before seeding will break the barrier pretty well if there's anything left

If I put pre-emergent crabgrass preventer down in the spring won’t I have to worry about it affecting the seed I planted in the fall of last year with over seeding?
It depends when it was planted and if it grew in the fall. If it came up and was actively growing then you are fine with pre-emergent in the spring
Does it only work before grabgrass starts to grow or can it be applied after
Hello, I have been binge watching all your videos lol.. We just re-seeded 2 days ago, how long after should we use fertilizer? And our yard is in bad shape with weeds, we are just doing our best to do what we can with it. Feeling hopeless 😩
You can put some on right away if you want...many use starter fertilizer along with new seed

@@brendandoherty2630 thanks so much, Brendan.. That's very valuable information.. And I'm taking it to the bank!! Lol
Is there something you recommend that’s pet friendly and for existing weeds? Something like a 3 in 1? I’m a little late to the game as far as preventing them from growing for the year.
You mention the clay soil...my entire yard is garbage. What can I do to better the soil and therefore have better grass??
I'm counting down the days until the cool weather passes and then I can finally overseed/fertilize since I scarified --- just 5 more days :) My lawn needs to be revived after I tortured it!
Very cold here between yesterday and today and looks that way all week :(
See, always checking to see your latest videos lol!
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care So stick to recommended rates but applying for frequently makes sense? Just to be clear.
Well said Ryan. It’s easy to see what the bag says, but there are those times when the bag doesn’t give spreader settings, and you freak out.
Any good tips on keeping jerky squirrels from dining holes in my tall fescue? I wake up to new holes daily. I caught it in the act the other day.

You can't seed for quite a bit after prodiamine right?
Awesome, just what I was looking for!
