    Woohoo just my test kit in today, ive been battling my lawn for awhile (new home owner) of 3 years. Now first year I had 130 yards of top soil drop to bring up grade, I listened to the big box stores and old timers with lime and the lawn turned into a weed paradise... last year I found ryans videos and purchased the book late into the season. Found landscaper supply and follow the book. Completely did a renovation and followed his guide and I had the best looking lawn on the block, thick deep green grass 😀👌 had some spots burn up a little in dead of summer but this year im ready to improve and learn!! Thank you!!

    Last year I applied product willy nilly. This year I am going to take Ryan's advice and send in a soil test. The soil was muddy from recent heavy snow. When getting core samples, there was only about 2" of mud in the probe after putting it 6" in the ground. I am not sure if it is the probe or what. I had to scrape the mud out of the probe, but I managed to get enough required for the test. Hopefully, I didn't mess up the test. Thanks for the great videos!

    I live in Timmins Ontario Canada. Our growing season is very short. I have a couple of questions about dethatching. I have a relatively large lawn (3/4 acre). Rather than raking by hand, we find it easier to dethatch using a power machine (Home Depot rental). We then pick up the thatch with our mower. We overseeded in the fall. Should we power rake this spring? If not, what are our options to loosen up the grass and promote growth? Keep up the great work. You rock!!

    Ryan, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about how many zones to sample. Your back yard looks pretty uniform so I can see that you'd get it analyzed as one zone. Should there be a different test sample for each grass type? For example, my front yard is KBG and back yard is mostly TTTF. What about sunny/open areas versus a shady area where the grass competes with trees? A separate test for mossy areas? Maybe I'm over thinking this? I tend to do that. Thanks!

    I tested my soil through Ward Laboratories, and they gave me a recommendation based on my nutrient levels. They said to split the N recommendation so 1/4 goes on the lawn on May 1st, June 1st, July 15th, and Sept 1st. But they said to put the entire rate of K on in the spring. The fertilizer recommendations in Actual Pounds of Plant Nutrients per Acre are 85 for N and 55 for K. I'm not really sure how to convert those numbers into something I can use/understand, but are there any products that you can recommend that would allow me to put down those nutrients at the times indicated? My yard is about 8000 sq/ft if that helps any and I have a pH of 6.8. I have the rest of the nutrient levels as well if that would be useful. Thanks for everything you do Ryan, your channel is one of my favorites!

    There's a fairly large spot in my front yard where it's nearly all weeds and bare ground. My neighbor tells me that the people who lived here before me burned a big pile of leaves on that spot years ago.
    Should I test that spot separately from the rest or include it with the rest of the samples? I imagine the soil has been altered quite a bit from the fire, based on the fact that it's still pretty bare years after.

The lows are going to be mostly in the upper 30's, low 40's for the next couple of weeks. Soil temps are spiking intraday above 55 fahrenheit. I checked Greencast and typically the average soil temp reaches 55 by April 18th in my area based on the 5 year average. Should I wait before I apply Barricade, or should I consider applying it now while soil temps are spiking above 55?

    I like using a soil test as a map. It is a map showing you where you are and you know where you're traveling to. However, there are many different routes to get to that final destination on the map. So you have to choose which route you're going to take. And if you make a mistake you can get back onto your route and continue going. Again I consider soil tests a map. Of where you are and where you're going. And you choose the route.

      @My_Family_Colo 3 года назад

      Thanks for the reply Ryan. Could you elaborate more on the topdressing? I would like to understand how topdressing with sand will improve clay soil compaction. My soil test results were interesting as the PH is neutral, K is adequate, N is depleted, and P is depleted. I do have a thick layer of moss in some areas so my initial guess was the soil is acidic. But, the results show it is probably from compaction.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  3 года назад

      @@My_Family_Colo It won't improve compaction but grass growing in sand has a lot more control and is why golf greens or sports fields are managed this way. You're dealing with a material with a lot more space between particles so roots can grow in but you have to manage it differently since fertilizer doesn't stick around in sand like it would a heavier soil and the same goes for water. It's just a different approach but is one that provides a lot more control from the turf manager.

    Hey I have a question, anyone plz answer , so this will be my first year of actually doing something to the lawn . I have bought everything but am not sure when to start the process. I live in New York and want to do a spring and fall overseed just for this first year (after I will just do fall) but I don’t know when to start overseeing because of temps. How soon should I start it ? This will be a massive help to me for who responds , thx so much !

      Wait until soil temps are consistently between 50 and 65 Fahrenheit. For you, probably late April/early May. Careful to watch out for the "false spring" we are having right now and pay attention to the overnight lows. Make sure you don't have any lows that dip into the low 30s; you don't want you newly germinating seeds to get frosted and die.

    If I’m in Montana, can I send it to the Iowa location? Basically does it matter if my location is not represented?

    My soil tests said I need K but no P, so my first thought was something like 12-0-12 which I haven’t found yet or CarbonX 8-1-8, which we can’t buy anymore because the company folded... dang it!!

      I have 12-0-12 coming out in a sprayable form soon but if you're granular you might want to check a local turf supply place for options

      Get some water on the spot the dog urinated on ( if you actually see it happen ).
