Car Painting HACKS: No Primer Needed Over Clearcoat - Basecoat With Atom X16

- We’re painting these two fenders and we’re going to show you that you don’t have to prime these parts to paint over it with another color.
We’re going to show you one fender which we sprayed base coat over and another fender which we primed it then sprayed gold base coat over.
We’re also going to be doing it a few different things on this door which I already did. Continue watching this 2-part series video. Don’t forget to Like, Share and Subscribe to my videos! Also comment below and grab your FREE 85-Page Auto Body And Paint Manual.

Before body and paint, always make sure that your parts are clean. We are going to wet sand with 400-grit. You’ll be fine as long as it’s a wet silicone carbide sand paper.
I like to buy 8×11 sand paper sheets which I cut down to quarter sections. I fold them into a palm size so it’s perfect for wet sanding.
When you sand, don’t use your three fingers like how I show you in the video. Use your entire hand when sanding. Check out the demo!
The key is to get it flat looking. Another quick way to find out if you’re sanding over base coat clear coat is that if you see white while sanding. On the other hand, if you’re sanding over single stage, the color will be coming right off because there’s no clear coat on it. If this car is just single stage, you’ll see red coming right off at this point.
However, if we sand too much and cut through the clear coat, you’re going to see the red coming out of your hand because you’re getting into the base coat.
There’s a couple of dents but we’re not going to worry about that for now because this is not a dent repair video but mostly finishing. We can fix the dents later on and then repaint the car.
This is pretty much done with the 400-grit. That’s how quickly you can have it completed. This is ready to spray base coat over.
A lot of people ask what color they can paint over. It depends on your final color. You can pretty much put any color over a base coat, especially if you’re going darker. You won’t hurt it. If you’re shooting white over this, you need to make sure to spray a few coats to cover it. Put enough white to cover it.
In this project, we used the Atom Mini X16 Spray Gun with a 1.0mm tip size. The 1.2mm tip size is recommended for larger pieces for better material coverage. If you want to check out these awesome spray guns, head on over to Zoolaa now.

When I joined your VIP program, around 6-7 years ago now I think it’s been, I only knew a little bit about auto painting and body work and had no experience at all doing it. I signed up with you to learn a new hobby really, but I ended up really getting into it and got good pretty quick. Within the first 2 or 3 months after I joined I was doing small repairs and paint jobs for people on the side. Within 2 years I rented out a little shop, built a paint booth in it and started doing paint and body work full time for myself. Literally everything I know about painting and body work I learned from your website. Just wanted to say thanks man, keep up the awesome work.
Nick D thank you for the kind words my man. You rock!! Stay cool Nick and great to hear from you!! :)
That's really cool man. Very encouraging to hear in the comment section of RUclips.
When you said shake it like a Polaroid picture, that brought back a lot of good memories when I was i young boy. Thanks Tony, always enjoy your videos.
Lol yeah boy!!!
I like this vid. As a tech, I sometimes don't understand why people complicate paint repairs. This vid shows the simplicity. I like it. So many people I talk with don't seem to view clear coat as a paint, but clear coat is indeed a paint. So, roughen it up a little and paint right over it.

Hey, Tony, You are a good teacher! Please let your audience know when painting to do all you cutting in first like wheel wells edge, front and rear edges or door jams, etc. any hard to get areas then spray the main panels. so you don't overspray the panel. Keep up the good videos
Very straight forward and practical! A true professional who really shares. Rare indeed.
Thanks Nagesh!
They say hold the can about 12 inches back or you'll get runs , and this man held the can up close to where he wanted to and no runs nothing but straight smooth. Man you're a bad man in a good way , i quess when a person practice whatever they might do , they became pros at what they do. You're a cold man , you know every step of that work and makes it look easy.
4-5 inches.
Very nice tutorial, enjoyed watching Tony

Thanks! You are awesome!
Thanks for the video. Lots of people told me I had to remove all the old clearcoat before I could repaint. Good to know that's not the case.

Tony I think your spray bomb spitting and sputtering is from not shaking it up enough. think about how long they "sit" after being put in the can. Possibly days/weeks in the factory. On a truck for a day or 3-4-5. Then in a distrubition warehouse for f knows how long then on the self in the shop yu bought it from. Thats a long time for settling to happen. To help with knowing the gunk build up at the bottom has been suspended flick the bottom of the can with a small screwdriver. Little pocket one. Listen to the tone of the sound. Then do it again after you shake it. You will hear the difference. Then shake it for another 4-5 mins so it gets mixed into whats already suspended. When I know im going to use one I toss it in the shaker and set it for 15 mins. Spitting and sputtering is never an issue.
I just had this exact same question. Painted a few cars, but never had to do this. Thanks Tony, you ROCK

I'M SO PISSED! SOMEBODY HELP ME.... I applied 3 coats of turbo black spray paint in my truck door and got a few small drips so gave it two hours to dry and I lightly sanded it and when I went to apply another light coat over it to cover it the paint came on and is looking like cracks or shatter glass of that makes sense... How do I fix this!?!?!?
You save the week Brother! Thank you and Blessings !

Thanks, you answered my question of can i paint over my red door with yellow. I'll rub it down and give it a couple of coats of paint then clearcoat. I'm not looking for a Rolls Royce result, just a yellow door to match the rest of the car. The red door i've got is perfect in every way, apart from not being yellow enough...
I might even go mad and sort out the roof which lost half of it's clear coat when i pressure washed one saturday morning.
Hi Tony it's comforting to Know that I'd get a good finish , but how about in terms of strength? Will it Hold ? Will the base hold on the clear to last ?
Looks great Tony
Thanks for your usual support Jon!
I know we all have our bad habits but one I refuse to pick up is sanding with my hand. Maybe If if i was just doing quick flip or collision type work I would in some circumstances.
Good job! I enjoyed your video. It's what I want to do with my newly painted car that I want to repaint coz I did not like the color. Now I know that I don't have to prime but just sand it with 400 grit. It will save me a lot of trouble and money!😃😄😁
Thanks so much! I'm an avid fan, Tony! Godbless...
Thanks again for your time and help
Happy to help

Great video as always Tony....Many Thanks 👍
Things to consider before spraying over sanded clear without priming is how easy the color you're going to be spraying will cover. You wouldn't wanna spray a red fender with a white base coat obviously itll take more passes to hideout the color which will result in using more paint. Another thing to consider is the thickness of mils of paint on the surface if it has reached or borderlined the recommended mil thickness and you paint over it then the paint is subject to crack fade etc. and wont last very long
interesting
How many cans of 2K clear did you use? I'm doing a bumper this weekend, I have one can of 2K clear but not sure it's enough... nice video
One can will cover 2 fenders... 3 coats each fender.
I forgot i was watching a spray video. Great tracks man!

So the trick is to lightly sand the previous clear coat to spray paint (primer, base and clear coat) over it? Can you blend a panel to repair a section of the panel without having to sand the previous clear coat? I see a lot of blending videos where the base coat is blended to surrounded areas of the panel without sanding the clear coat. Wouldn't the new clear coat seal the new base coat even if the previous clear coat wasn't sanded?
This is from Sweden: I'm very thankful to you because this programme I know how to paint with taken of old paint and also I learn timing is very important before going coat overcoat. I did not learn how to mix colour so I still use spray readymade and they are good, I love to learn to mix colour don't know how to start?
Hi there, nicely done!!
Why when I tried to do paint over clear coat wet sanded with 800 grit, the clear started to shrink and peeled off? :(
Thank you
What about putting single-stage urethane on the base coat-clear coat? Love the videos, you are an artist.
Thanks, Bronco!
You bet! I think I answered my question, though, that I in fact CAN paint over the clear coat with single-stage.
Good tip Tony. I recently painted a car for my first time using an air compressor and HVLP spray gun and tried painting with primer and without primer over the old colour of the car (scuffed and sanded) and also could not visually tell the difference!
Saves time and money to skip the initial primer but just make sure it's prepped nicely and you're good to go.
Cool!
Just painted my hood, I have a gouge and orange peel, should I strip it off or wetsand 400 the orange peel out and re shoot my base. Just did it yesterday, thank u so much for your time !! Signed up for your course ! 🎨
Ok so if you can wet sand the clear coat n spray top coat directly on it without priming...is it " Best Practices " to prime then? The finished product should be better over sanded primer, right?
Realy nice my brother thanks a lot
What kind of primer do I need for using acrylic enamel single stage paint? And do I need to primer the whole car or just parts where I fixed dings etc? Car is gonna be a darker version grey of what it originally was
Great video answered some questions I had. I’m in the process of re clearing a peeling vehicle I been wet sanding the old clear coat and feathering it down to the base coat with 600 grit and itlooks like I will need to hit it with a sandable primer to get a even surface correct? Do I only prime around the feathered sanded areas? And do what u did sand off the rest of the panels clear coat with 400 or 600 and start blasting it with the base coat. Or prime the whole panel ,sand flat then base coat it
Hey Man! Check out our website for more blogs on wet sanding www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/?s=wet+sanding
Great video and thanks for sharing.
I painted two boat out drives which came out spotless until I sprayed the COLORRITE clearcoat which came out as yellow dust like pollen on a clean car. Wet sending the clear coat and applying the same paint should work? And than reapply clear coat.
Also how long do you wait from coat to coat?
Smooth application! How much is the CFM of the gun used also the CFM of your compressor ?
Thanks buddy! For auto body I recommend using at least a 30-gallon tank because it takes a while to refill the tank and you’ll run out of volume.
Volume is very important when you’re painting because you need to make sure you have a lot of air volume to supply your paint time. Ideally, larger air compressors with at least 30 gallons are recommended to hold larger compressed air for you to use during your painting.
On the other hand, your motor is the one recharging the air tank for you. It’s better to have a bigger horsepower and stronger CFM to recharge your air tank for faster recovery and overall volume.

Tony - I read your book, incredible detailed information. And watched this video as well, my focused was the red side obviously. I have not ever worked on a car, but am inspired by you with the vast education you provide to all of us. I have a black car with relatively good condition except for some hail damaged on the hood and trunk as well.
I decided to fixed the small dents with bon-do, prime it, etc. and paint the whole car over sanded clear. Since the car paint is still in good condition, how many coats of paint would you recommend? The clear is going to be 2-3 coats for sure. Thank you Tony!
Thank you. If your spraying base clear... I like to say spray enough until it covers which is normally 2-3 coats. Also 2-3 coats of clear. If spraying single stage, 2-3 coats med-wet. Good luck! 👍🏻
@@HowToPaintYourCar Much appreciated Boss

Im going from red to a dark ming blue. I have no repairs, just a little clear peel. Can I do a scuff, base, and clear, or would I need the prime or seal first?
Great video.good job... painting over paint is paint stacking and in the sun you will look down the side of the car and it will look wavy and look like it was painted in Tijuana...it's a no no... unless of course you paint cars in Tijuana that is
Great video been watching a lot of videos past couple weeks so glad I found this one. I have a question I can't seem to be able to find an answer to anywhere. I just painted the rear fender of my Harley-Davidson Fatboy using aerosol cans I ordered online with the OEM paint code. I did not get enough paint I thought two cans would be enough and for someone more experienced it probably would have been this is my first attempt at any kind of body work or paint. But my question is since I'm going to be waiting almost a week for my new paint to arrive can I just spray right over what I already put down or should I scuff it up first using 400 or 600 and if so should I do it wet or dry it may be important to know that my paint has metallic in it. It's Harley's Pacific Blue Pearl. Thanks!

Nice video. I had a question. At 12:20, you used a 2K primer on the fenders. Why use the primer after the basecoat?
Unfortunately you’re so far away, or else I could possibly join you 🤗 who said that lady can’t diy? Well I loved to do it except the tyres 😂
Awesome, Jaymee!
jaymee khan you can join me online :)
Nice video buddy.Does the same apply to stage 1 base coat?
Hey buddy! The clear coat is really not needed. Single stage is a complete paint system and if you lay on glossy, it’s good to go.
But if you do want to clear coat it, I would recommend waiting about one to two weeks to make sure your single stage is nice, cured, and dry.
And you can sand it with like 800 grit, give or take to put some clear 800 to 1000 in that area.

Hey Tony,! How do you set up your garage to be able to breathe in there!? I just have single double door to open! I see you have your door open 1/4 way! Besides a fan how do you keep the bugs and crap in the air off the fresh paint? Do you use special breathing apparatus to breath fresh air if there is such a thing!? Can you give us a list of things a person needs to garage paint a car? Necessary stuff only!! Rich
I had no idea there was a primer filler coat. I went base coat, clear coat and amazingly it turned out ok. I can see how much smoother this is though
I am a part of your VIP program but do not know where to ask questions.
I have a car with peeling clearcoat but the actual basecoat revealed looks fine.
can I just sand off the clear coat then add another coat a base then clear coat?
thanks
You could six hundred it down flat removing feathering the bad clear and then base over it
I said this in the video... You'll need to prime that, then wash it flat with 400 grit. Then proceed with new fresh base, followed by your clear! Good luck keep me posted!
Quick question boss so I I’m done paint 🎨 got the clear coat on . Which grit can I use that will remove imperfections from the clear coat ?? 2000 3000 ? Again I don’t want it to remove the clear coat just want to remove some over spray thanks boss!!
Great Video.. Relevant today ! Question ? Ive got Duplicolor primer and Duplicolor gloss black paint.. Im color changing from red. Im wetsanding with 600 and 1000 before primer. I have 2k clear for after primer and base coats.. Is Duplicolor scratch filler primer ok ? Its not the 2k primer
Yes Man! Scratch filler prime is okay. You might wanna get some more tips here about filler primer www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/?s=filler+primer Keep cranking!
Hi Tony question for you.
Can I do the same for alloys.
Basically my alloys are silver and I have sanded it down and cleaned and got it looking dull.
Now I want to spray it black?can I paint it black without primer.
As the paint before had the rust proof on there already.
Or do I have to put etch primer?
Before spraying it black.
Thank you.
Hey what’s up dude actually you might want to prime it because painting directly over any type of metal is not recommended. I mean I think you can do it but I’m not sure how long it would last. It would last for sometime but it might start peeling if left in the weather in the sun for long periods of time over the years. To get a long lasting finish you’ll have to prime it send it then spray it black with your clearcoat. Good luck and keep us posted.
Tony B. Richie - Car Mods & Entrepreneurship!
Thank you.
I live in London and I had a friend from the US came round and started sanding the alloys down.
Tony he premiered but used the normal car body primer.
When I went to the shop to buy black paint i told them what we did,and they said normal primer will peel off and I should of used etch primer.
Now that the wheel has primer shall I sand it down to 320 grit and use etch primer.... or shall I ignore what the shop told me.and just carry on..?
Also in normal circumstances before the top coat goes on do you sand down the primer on alloys or not necessary.?
The next alloy this is what steps I’ll do.
Sanding it down to 320
Etch primer
Normal body primer.
Sand down (if you advise)
Top coat flat colour non metallic.
1000 grit polish it out.
Is this correct?
Thank you
Should you use a sealer over the old paint under certain circumstances?
Good channel man! I just found it. How much paint do you think you need to paint two sedan doors? Do you think one pint would be enough to get two or three coats on both of the doors? Thanks
What's the purpose of even sanding at all? Can't you spray over without wet sanding? Thank you so much!
good spray technique, If a guy has good disciplined spray habits, generally hes got good advice, :)
I like the comparison of using primer vs. not using primer. But you really will not know how it holds up in the sun until 5 or 10 years later. So we really do not know the difference in the two processes. Do you have a long term comparison you can show us?
Hey Man! Sorry as of the moment I don’t have. And it depends with different climate as well. If you’re spraying over a solid topcoat like even a new paint job it doesn’t require primer and it will hold up for a very very long time.
great question!
Is it still ok to spray over single stage with base coat following same way you done it ?
Yes definitely!
Great video, man! Well made, informative, and the audio levels were consistent throughout.
Much appreciated!
I have a shop available to me for about 3-4 days. I’m trying to get a quick but durable paint job in using urethane. I do have a few dents I plan to fix. My question is, can I spot prime the repairs with a 2k rattle can and go straight to sanding and applying new base coat? Or will the primed spots show up?
Dustin, send in your question with pictures of your project through email so I can give you a more accurate recommendation. Send it to ninjasupport@learnautobodyandpaint.com
Quick tip for the sandpaper instead of folding it, just put duct tape on the back of it then you don’t have to fold it over and it’ll help even out where your fingers are when you’re standing. Also in my opinion I think the Eastwood 2K clear in a spray can is better than the spray max. Long story short I had issues with spray max but none with Eastwood. Just my opinion anyway thanks for the video.
thanks for the tip!
So will this work on the whole car? The clear coat is peeling on my Honda all over and plan to paint, but if I can get away with no primer to save a buck that be great.
You can do this to the hole car and in dents just sand down to metal and put bondo? and sand then primer and sand and sealer after ?
What if the clear was peeling in sections would you primer those sections?
I had my car repainted, let's just say some incorrect materials were used resulting in lots of orange peel. The painter buffed out the orange peel but induced lots of swirls and even pretty much took the clear coat off. The car is due to go back to the painter for a new layer of clear coat. Obviously I don't intend to let him do the detailing with paint this time but let's say its a normal sized sedan how much clear coat should I get sprayed to be on the safe side for any future correction? The car had primer before the repaint job, he will be sanding down the car to get the clear coat whatever is left off and then do a layer of base coat to refresh and finish with clear.
I am assuming from your video the clear coat should be taken all out before the new base coat and clearcoat is applied - dealing with same color here.
Is it ok to paint with base paint over clear coat paint?
You make it look easy
Thanks! It's my passion!
Thank you for the very informative video!! I just wished that I would've researched this prior and watched this first before jumping into sanding down my fender! I probably could have just hand sanded the pin striping off with the clear coat rather than flap discing it. Now I have way more prep work than I needed to do. But great video thanks!

Are there going to be any sand scratches from the wet sand showing since we are not priming the fender?
Doing this to my engine bay as I paint it so I can get all the hard to reach places for the last coat
Thanks for the great video. What do you use to dewax that is cheap?
dawn soap
Hey ,I wanna paint my car,it has a terrible done paint job where its flaking just from a cleaning with a water hose .would I need to sand it down to metal or what? And also in general how much cans of paint I would need for a smaller car ? And primer if necessary ? And clear and where can I find car paint??
I have prepped my base/clear coat fender extensions using 1000 grit wet/dry paper. I found this video and see you suggest 400 grit. Is 1000 going to be ok to paint over? Is my project too smooth?

Can you wet sand over existing paint and then spray a single stage paint?
I used SprayMax Epoxy Primer. I noticed that once the can was half empty that it effect the performance of the can.
Put it in a pan of hot water to raise the pressure in the can.
