  • Andrew Miedecke talks on the history and personal connection to this amazing piece of motorsport machinery. The Mercedes 190e has a Cosworth Motor tuned up to 300hp with individual throttle bodies (ITBs) and all the beautiful pipework to match. It's a time capsule of a real man & machine race car that has been beautifully resorted by James at Retromax.
"This DTM racer was originally prepared by the racing outfit called RSM Marko. The team was owned by Helmut Marko, now Red Bull Racing F1 advisor. In 1986 the car was sent to Australia and raced at the famous Bathurst 1000. It was raced by former F1 world champion Denny Hulme and Olympic skiing gold medallist, Austrian Franz Klammer. The unlikely duo managed to finish an impressive 9th overall.
After a brief stint of racing in a domestic series in Australia, the car was shipped to the US and seemed to disappear for a few years. When it resurfaced in 2012 it was bought by former racing driver Andrew Miedecke and returned to Australia. Miedecke raced an identical car at Bathurst in 1986."
"“I really bought the car back because I had fond memories. Bathurst 1986 was my first ever touring car race, and my first drive at Bathurst having raced only single-seaters,” says Miedecke. “It was dynamite across the top of the mountain and down through The Esses, and quite good fun. It would eat anything else under brakes into the corners, and it was noticeably more stable. It was terrific,” Miedecke recalls. Amazing how things come full circle sometimes, isn’t it?" - doubleapex.co....

Great interview and fantastic to see Andrew walk down memory lane about this case. Group A was so exciting and I think Andrew is right about how the telemetry has enable good but not superlative drivers come up the curve. You see this in WRC rallying too. With sequential dual clutch gearboxes and fancy diffs, data and incredibly refined suspensions you just turn in. Skando flicking went out in the early 90s and a young guy like Harri Rovanpera can get in a car and left foot brake without having to worry about heel and toe etc etc and he can win WRC rounds at an age unthinkable 50 years ago.

Great video and great interview! I wouldn't have guessed Andrew was 75 until he mentioned it, he's looking as fit as ever! Although I wasn't born during this era of the sport, I've come to learn a lot over time through various internet sources and watching the races and I've always found that Andrew was severely underrated and quite possibly having the most rotten luck that a racing driver could experience. It says a lot that Peter Brock had him on board for a number of years.

Thanks for a great video. I saw this car at the motor classic a and it’s great to hear that the project is finally finished. I have the original press release folder that was given to journalists by the team as part of the Bathurst campaign.

A fantastic video on a car that I’m quite fond of!
Great to see Andrew, a driver that I have a lot of respect for & hear about the history background of this fantastic looking GrpA race car, which very little is known about.
Even more elated to hear that it will be back on the track where it truly belongs, hopefully competing in the Heritage Touring Car series?
    Thanks for making my Christmas!
Looking forward to seeing it back racing at full song together with a follow up video on its debut?
