They gave me about an hour in the pits at the Nürburgring to try and get enough pictures to stitch together a panorama that would've gone up on the Opel Motorsports website. Unfortunately the digital camera that I had access to was too crappy to get decent quality photos.

The Mercedes was RWD, but to compensate for the lack of traction, Mercedes integrated a movable ballast weight, that moved to the rear when accelerating and to the front when breaking. Those cars in 1996 were more hight tech than F1 at the time. The 1996 Calibra had what today is called DRS. And it had movable shutters in front of the front air intakes. They closed on the straights and opened in the corners. That way the 1996 Opel Calibra V6 4x4 reached over 300kph at the long straights of the old Hockenheimring. Being the first touring car to ever be that fast.
Alfa sounds so brutal compared to others, more like 70's and early 80's F1 cars. But all of them sound good, Volvo sound would need recording alone without other cars disturbing.

This 2.5l V6 with a pneumatic valve drive by Williams GP reved up to 12.000 RPM and to this day I get goose bumps remembering this sound. Unfortunately there is only one (of the 9 cars in existence) in working order today. That's the championship winning #7 ( black with cliff logos) of Manuel Reuter. The problem is that the software needed to even start these cars was IP of Zakspeed, not Opel. And since the partnership didn't end on the best of terms, Zakspeed kept the software. That's why you can see/hear 1996 C-Class cars running at classic touring car events, but no Calibras.😢 But there is at least one 1995 Calibra ich in private possession and in working order. But the 1995 sounds slightly less awesome.
One that technically fits into this category is the Nissan Skyline HR31 Group A. Turbo engines usually aren't anything special, but this DOHC 6-cylinder turbo sounds special.
The Nissan GTR Skyline "Godzilla" blew away the 5 litre V8 Aussie touring cars so they banned it. It was the 4WD and 4WS systems that also gave it an advantage over the V8 Holden and Ford RWD in the wet.

In terms of sound - look up the 1991 Bathurst Top Ten lap Peter Brock did in the VN Group A (which debuted in 1991 so qualifies here). They were revving them so hard to try and keep up with the GT-Rs and RS500s that year, sounded great.
Should have had clearer audio of the S40. Is it rare appearance? Also, is the German chatter on the audio speaker common when it's just a trackday or? Great video nonetheless
They sound awesome. But I would like to know why you have those kinds of sounds at 0:39 and 4:07 on all of a 90's DTM cars, it sounds very good, I like this sound
That's from the intake manifold on NA engines. Basically the air is fed straight to engine without restriction. Kind of the same principle as a straight exhaust.
My choice would be Wayne Gardner's Coke Commodore from the mid-90's. They had a unique sound among the Aussie V8's, they sounded more like sprint car. The car would just roar.
1996 C-Klasse DTM = one of the most beautiful cars in motorsport history (especially in black)! Btw.: The actual noise can't be transferred. That BWM E30 M3 f.e. is so loud that your ears HURT. It sounds awesome via TV but in reeality your ears just hurt when you are close because it's so insanely loud.
That's a really ordinary list. I appreciate that the channel can only put up videos that it has of cars it has personally filmed, but don't claim the 'best' sounding touring cars of the 1990s and then omit the R32 GT-R Group A and any of the Ford/Holden V8 touring cars from Australia over this period. The Peugeot and BMW are 'meh' in comparison.

I remember when I was a kid and fo the frist time I've played Gran Turismo 2 on my grey PSX. In Specials there was Alfa Romeo 155. Some kind of a monster very similar to this one. And OH! MY! GOD! the sound that car makes was fuckin' biblical! From that day I was in love with all kind 90degrees V6's

At the time of making this video I had not seen Godzilla yet. But in the meantime I have. I have only seen those V8 supercars at Goodwood and 1 at Spa. But think that one was from the 80s.
They did compete against eachother, but the DTM stuff blew the JGTC cars out of the water, at the Grand Prix of Macau, 24 Hours of Nurburgring Godzilla for taught a bit of a lesson.
All DTM cars in the mid 90's was simply a peak in motorsport history. I feel more than lucky to have experienced it in real life!

DTM from 80 - 90 ist the best of all time .
