    One of the greatest American bands, I wish they came out 5 years later they would be more appreciated . They were so bold and ahead of their time. Society wasn't ready for them , they are rock solid musicians, artists ,philosophers, poets, artists, tech wizards and fashionistas.. The complete package.

    Given the technology of 1982, what Devo attempted in live shows showed incredible foresight. Synching the band to the "large projection screen behind them" took a heck of a lot of effort....and sometimes it failed in concert. But it was the future. Now you have multiple massive sized screens that the band/singers flow in/out of synch with. Devo saw it coming 40 years ago.

HEY, FUCK ME RIGHT??? So anyway, long of a short, that PETRI dish, is EXACTLY the same as being quarantine. A LOTTA YA IN ONE ROOM gonna make A BIG ASS VIRUS GUARANTEED, and this is not an issue you can debate. By the way, piss on your feet while you shower, AGAIN, look it UP, IT WORKS. It was annoying, but I went to work no problem, and I knew it was not pneumonia having gone thought that before. I now have SARS-COV2 antibodies. My son too, he actually got sicker than me and a high fever. After 3 days, he was back right as rain. All the COVID symptoms, no smell, no taste, high fever, and lethargic. However, still eating. In the end COVID is much less intense than the flu. Also, I beat it down with antibiotics and zinc which says to me, I already had this. My 17 year old son did not. AND, everyone was sick late Feb & March, so this whole thing is an overreaction. We should quarantine the sick, elderly, and immune system compromise - not healthy people especially children, and not allow this globalist current martial law that has been imposed on us.

      Saw an art show of his in 94' near the Riverfront in Detroit (lots of gold-leaf and florescent blacklight art). At one point, I said to a friend "Cool show, but too bad I don't see Mark." He pointed to a spot like five yards away and was like "He's over there." Sure enough, he was all dressed in an all black suit wearing color-rimmed glasses (and a tad wide in the middle) standing at the end of a black couch talking to a young woman who had the "generic New Wave look" with mussed and chop-bobbed bleach-blonde hair, white skinny wrap-around shades, and a neon green sleeveless shirt-she looked all jazzed and geeked looking up and talking to him. At the other end of the couch was a photographer friend of mine just casually smiling with his legs crossed in his hiking boots just looking away off to the side.
      When we walked back to the car, my photographer friend commented about how he wishes he saw Mark there. We said "Yeah, he was right there, talking to the girl sitting on the other end of the couch you were on." He started jumping up and down in exaggerated leaps and stomps "No! No! No Way! He was right there, and I missed him?!"

    I am so deeply in love with DEVO. More than any other rock'n'roll group, DEVO was the leader of the New Wave era. But perhaps, DEVO and the Talking Heads were about equal to each other. Other New Wave groups from that era included, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), Bow Wow Wow, Kraftwerk, Madness, Squeeze, Altered Images, Gang of Four, New Order, and others. I saw an interview of Danny Elfman, and he preferred that his group not be characterized as, "New Wave." On the other hand, in view of of the moment in time that Oingo Boingo entered the music scene, and in view of the querky and highly clever nature of Oingo Boingo's music, I contend that it would be reasonable to characterize Oingo Boingo as being a New Wave group.

    I was real big into Devo when Freedom of choice came out. Of course Whip It was the 1st song I ever heard from them but I was only like 7 years old and always liked them. It was the only album of theirs that I had but I remember seeing them on Solid Gold as a kid and they played Jerking Back and Forth. That song was stuck in my head for decades. I was just a little kid and didn't get all of the meaning and social agenda but I always thought the music was good. A few other songs I really dug were Peekaboo, Secret Agent Man, Uncontrollable Urge, and the whole Freedom of Choice album. I'm surprised they weren't bigger but they were ahead of their time and pioneers. A buddy of mine saw them in concert and said they were fantastic and had just incredible energy on stage.

    I am born in 1975 and discovered Devo because of weird Al. It looks like there is so much happening before my time that I can appreciate and I am looking forward to buying a lot of albums and a lot of their early multimedia art I wonder what they would say about the 1990s and he was trying to do something experimental on the Internet and on optical media?

    DEVO was MTV before MTV, not sure the date of this Letterman show, but this was probably when MTV was less than a year old and most people didn't have it yet.

    • @WinslowLeach1974
      @WinslowLeach1974 3 года назад +1

      You're right in the zone, MTV was only 13 months old (and far from available everywhere) when the "Oh No, It's DEVO" album came out and this airing was only a little after. But yes DEVO was making music vids long before MTV. To MTV's credit, they were great in their first year and a half, and they played a lot of DEVO then.
