You stole my comment that I was about to write. LOL. First thing I thought of was people trying to interview John Lennon - even as far back as 1963, and John would give intelligent and challenging answers that went well over the interview's head. Gerry, especially in these 1980-84 era interviews, shows a firm command of the Devo concept because he invented it (Yes, before he made the band with Mark). Like Lennon, Gerry was an artist and had the ability to see from "above the bowl" and analyze society deeply, perhaps too deeply for many people....thus their outsider status at times. Intelligent music is THE BEST!
Actually, the 80’s were really awful if you actually had to live through them. The early 80’s were fun, but after ‘83 or so it was all downhill. Drugs... in very copious amounts... were the only thing that got me through that horrific decade.
Thanks for posting this.I heard that jerry witnessed the Kent State protesters getting shot by national guardsmen while he was a student there and this made the whole de-evolution theory very real in his eyes.
yeah man, you're right. Now its all about fitting into the box and anyone is affraid of breaking out of it. If you break out of it, people will criticize you. Energy Domes off to Devo for doing something new, unique, and different.
well , CNN should re air this video clip , just when ,Jack Cafferty is on , and Jack should sat that DEVO belongs in the rock and roll of fame !! DEVO is the true pioneers of rock and video, well said JAck, the de-evolution band
I remember seeing this when it was broadcast; I saw the later of the Halloween Night shows @ Radio City Music Hall they were promoting. Now my 4 year-old son is into DEVO; after seeing them on Yo Gabba Gabba, he found the DEVO video on the NickJr website & kept playing it over & over... So I got out all my CDs & now he's a Real Spudboy -- he was thrilled to get "Something For Everyone" for Xmas!
"Susan" at the end is so predictable. "Oka-a-y . . . ." People are so easy to psych out, even today. (I confess I probably had a similar reaction to them at first.)
They will reincarnate forever like Menudo but better- waiting for the return of a savior , because people won’t have to think as far into the future to understand De-evolution.
BWAAhahahaaa! Mark looks he walked out of his Optometrist's office with some of the doctor's equipment! Prolly the same day he had his Dentist's appt... that Novocaine is a HELLUVA drug! 1:01 Can't find a wastebasket... tosses bananana peel over his shoulder... I'm snickering
Had no idea how awesome these guys are. I thought they were just another 80s group, but turns out that was just a front for what they're really about. "Musical laxative for a constipated society" indeed
This is great !! "Aren't you a little young to be cynical ?" I can't stop laughing. Jerry and Mark are both fantastic. Thanks for uploading this interview :-)
Actually, the interviewer for the clash 1981(?) interview was Tom Snyder (saw for the first time thanks to RUclips and the uploader0 and it was a DEFINITE cynical outlook towards ANY mainstream/commercial society in ANY country.
"I don't think we're cynical at all ...We just watch the news."
too bad less and less americans have a spirit like these guys. they remind me of what i once loved about america.
So very true. Genuine individuality is stomped out
"Why did you change your image from the bowls on your heads to the...?"
"Chemotherapy, Jack."
Oh, Mark.
Was it because their drummer eas going through it at that time?
devo, always with something subgenius to say.
Mr. Gerry Casale is clearly the band's spokesperson. Yeah, I like watching 'silent' band members. Makes you want to observe them more.
yeah, you're a witty guy, aren't you?
Gerry is like the John Lennon of New Wave. What a witty guy!

@@jameseldogger7410 Great way to word it
J - "Why do you wear those glasses?"
M - "Because I'm legally blind without them."
J - "That's a good reason."
What, you think he's kidding? lol
Well, the implied question is "why do you wear those strange glasses."
I'm not the guy to say but.. They come over as super intelligent. Almost superhuman.
I started listening to devo, then I started LISTENING to devo, like this, thank you for posting

Gerry putting his finger on his neck before he answers the first question, too funny

Thanks for posting this.I heard that jerry witnessed the Kent State protesters getting shot by national guardsmen while he was a student there and this made the whole de-evolution theory very real in his eyes.
Absolutely energizing. Required learning here, brothers and sisters.
I like how quickly Mothersbaugh states that he fed dogs with the "bowls"
At this point, Devo was not "through being cool" yet.
I enjoy how Jerry made Jack Cafferty laugh out loud.
One of the greatest Bands EVER! We’re ALL Devo!
RIP Bob Casale
I had no idea what these guys were about. I only knew "Whip It". It blows me away to see how far ahead they were in their thinking.
At 1:02 when he throws the wrapper behind his head is sooo funny! I laughed so hard i started choking!
F--king amazing.
Best thing I've seen all day!
Are We not men??

this is the best cafferty file i've ever seen!
Jack you got owned by Devo.
"Susan" at the end is so predictable. "Oka-a-y . . . ." People are so easy to psych out, even today. (I confess I probably had a similar reaction to them at first.)
best explanation on the energy domes ever
"Actually, we´re just adapting to the feudal corporate state that we find ourselves in"
Way ahead of their time, yeah!
i love straight-faced sarcasm.
you either get the joke or you're left scratching your head.
LOVE IT THANKS.

There will never be anything like them again...Ever.
We are all DEVO. DEVO is eternal. There is no more DEVO than DEVO.
They will reincarnate forever like Menudo but better- waiting for the return of a savior
, because people won’t have to think as far into the future to understand De-evolution.
Lol I love the 1st question:
-Why are you wearing those glasses?
-Because I'm legally blind without them...!
As funny as it is, it's also like the best and most original quote I've ever heard! :D

AWESOME
EPIC!!!!!!
Egad! i didn't notice it until i watched it again! Okay?! Is that alright with you? Golly.
I grew-up with these guys; concerts and albums. They are timeless and SO under-rated. Jack was really out of his league. Not much has changed.
I listen to DEVO, So should You.
I exercise freedom of choice.
I am a new traditionalist.
I ride a Honda Elite
YEAH..you tell-um Jerry and Mark...we been trying to tell them sense 1492!
THEY WERE A THREAT TO ALOT OF PEOPLE,FOR NO REASON!

I can't stop laughing. Jerry and Mark are both fantastic.
Thanks for uploading this interview :-)
Our heroes predict Romney and Santorum 30 years in advance.
You wrote this when Obama was in office. Hahahahaha. Simpler times.
Mark's optical wear looks like the entire contraption my optometrist has inside that dark room with the eye chart
Because that's what it is.
Lol thanks, I was expecting you to not reply like everyone else.
Thanks!
I became the 500th person to like this video. Am I DEVO?
We're all DEVO.
Wow thanks,this is geat!!!
OMG Sue Simmons! Tri-State area news, holla!
Yeah, he doesn't talk much in interviews back then. I have another I'm going to put up that shows this.

Actually, the interviewer for the clash 1981(?) interview was Tom Snyder (saw for the first time thanks to RUclips and the uploader0 and it was a DEFINITE cynical outlook towards ANY mainstream/commercial society in ANY country.
“Aw because I’m legally blind w out’m.”
