Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh shows Pink Floyd dumpster finds - Mutato Muzika TOUR

- Everything is awesome at Mutato Muzika. We met up with Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh for a guided tour of his Hollywood-based production facility and took a look at Pink Floyd dumpster finds, visited the final resting place of Mothersbaugh’s alter ego, Booji Boy, and learned the Complete Truth About Iggy Pop.
"Show Us Your Junk!" is a scavenger hunt through the recording studios, tour vans, and storage units of our favorite musicians - a celebration of the nick-knacks, impulse purchases, artifacts, odds-and-ends, doodads, thingamajigs, whatchamacallits, and other ephemera piled up in corners, cluttering the shelves of rock and roll.

I need an entire album of drone devo. That is the best version of "girl you want" ever.
Drone like a Devo with/for/by ants and bees? Are you trying to talk about the "eastern" vocals.
@@flannigan7956 drone - a low continuous humming sound.
Yes
you might wanna check out the music of Daniel Higgs (former vocalist for the Discord Records band Lungfish) He plays shruti box on a lot of songs & his vocal styling is very similar to what Mark is doing on that bit (I'm honestly wondering if he's intentionally doing Higgs' thing there or if they're both referencing/inspired by something else I'm not aware of)
@@KYpapertigerthanks for sharing the Higgs suggestion. Currently doing a deep dive into his recordings. Great stuff my friend. In the same vein, I would recommend Henry Flynt - Hillbilly Tape Music (recorded 1971-78)
That was about two hours too short. Felt like tease. What a place, and the stories........the stories he could tell.
Thanks for watching!
Amen to that. 1st thing I said when it ended. Way way too short!
EarthQuakerDevices Thank YOU , EQD , but I totally agree with GIBKEL ‘n’ Sparks !
We need an extended cut of this one.
Totally. My phone interview (see comment separate from this reply) was scheduled for 15mins. It lasted nearly 90mins!!! THAT was too short. Subsequent DEVO gigs here in Vancouver either Mark (usually) or Gerald ALWAYS contacts me - I never ask them - with their offer of VIP passes. With my increased awareness of the level of Gerald's appreciation of Neil Young (including Gerald's extreme closeness to both proximity of and, friendships with those students who died in Ohio...he was on the knoll!!!) solidifying a peripheral "connection" via our rambling and shambolic one-take, adlib Crazy Horse-esque deconstruction of "Mongoloid"
That kinda thing is what separates the good people who punch in/out and, keep moving forward despite getting a shit-kicking by/from society from the people who have agendas and, do "nice" things in exchange for the benefit to them of doing such things.
Pioneers Who Got Scalped...maybe...but, who continued to evolve and, quest for knowledge and, to take an exceptionally progressive (not necessarily the EASIER) road towards creating something awesome
That little offhand riff on Girl You Want was so casually genius.
I demand the recording of Iggy Pop singing Praying Hands in German to be released as a single
No kidding!!!
it doesn't exist there was a huge shitstorm on the internet between mark and gerry about it, gerry basically said "its bullshit, do you think if we had some master tape sitting around with devo jamming with iggy pop we wouldn't release it immediately?" there is another version of this story where its devo jamming with david bowie
@Catherina Stensrud I have no idea what compelled you to comment this here but thank you, this site is rad
@@ismellstatic what site is he referring to? Booji Boy’s basement?
Some movie site that may or may not be sketch; the person who mentioned it got deleted and I keep forgetting to actually look into it
I wish this was a feature length documentary.
this! needs to happen, this felt like a rushed tour, realise he's busy, but damn his legacy must be detailed, what a phenomenal artist!
9:58 The distortion pedal says "OUTPOOT"
PootiSpenser here.
This should be a 10-part, 1 hour miniseries.... I'm hooked!
I just want a pair of those Chrome glasses.
they are FIRE
He sells them it's his brand of glasses
@@Musicalmane $350!
@@alanrogs3990That's not unreasonable. My Ray-Ban frames were $275, and prescription lenses were another $275.
This is unreal. I interviewed Mark at Mutato via phone (I'm in Vancouver) and, he and I had emailed for a few yrs prior (More so myself and Gerald) due to my former band recording a Crazy Horse-esque, 4am, red wine fuelled, version of "Mongoloid" which Mark and Gerald let us add to our record as a "Hidden Track" with their encouragement and, with all royalties waived!
Mark did an art show here in Vancouver and asked that we (Cadaver Dogs, album was Pariah Social) play the opening. Unfortunately I was out of province due to a family death.
Fast forward to the interview...At that time Mark had the Margouleff/Cecil (Tonto's Exploding Headband) T.O.N.T.O. active console at this facility and, we spoke at length about this, their collaborations with Neil Young, Alan Myers, his disgust with the music "business" during the 1st stage of their career and, his various mediums of creating art.
He left me with his number and, an invite to drop by the next time I was in LA. He was awesome (as was Gerald).
He's inspired me in many different ways...primarily with his creative process and, for not being "satisfied" when it seems like you've reached an impasse. He interweaves art with technology with pop culture with a kinda "calculus" thought process.
This video shows this perfectly. My one regret was that T.O.N.T.O has left his facility BUT, you can see that he's got a neverending collection of historical and bizarre items at his fingertips
mark flexing that Bape I see
"So I was in this art band..." Thats a super humble way to say that he was the lead singer of devo
I thought that too, to call it this art band. It was a band beyond and I'm sure will get another blast of following in the future. I still have a picture disk of Are we not men? May have been worth money now if I kept it pristine but worth way more to me that I played it to death.
Humble woulda been "I was in this quirky 80s group"
@@flannigan7956true, but he's probably really sick of people trying to pigeonhole them into "New Wave" or something like that. you're right, its not humility, but its not bragging.
@@squirlmy I was a 2+2=4 man
@amadd5641 The UK picture disk, that thing is so neat. I recently found that at a Missouri flea market and let my buddy get it since he's a new Devo fan and I've liked em for 25 yrs (plus I was outta money). Same as the Euro version of Duty Now, less remarkable in countries where it was released but a proud nasty score for me to grab up while abroad (and give to the old fellow who got me into Devo back then heh heh)
Please upload 437 more hours of Mark doing this stuff.
Reductive synthesis, boiling down your work to its simplest essence, is so overlooked as a creative mode when technology gives you a universe of choice. Keep keepin' it real Mark!
Subtractive synthesis is the basis for most analogue synthesis. It's not overlooked
Not really. I think he was making a joke. Reductive synthesis is having an oscillator, and filtering it.
I would work in his studio as a cleaning lady and be perfectly happy just to see his genuis and all of his equipment and toys every day.
Fun Fact: This guy was the responsable of Regular Show's music.
are you serious?!? edit: yep confirmed
omggg
"We were working in a storefront with a painted window in Hollywood and next door Pink Floyd was rehearsing for a tour."
Most of us will die never being able to answer the question, "Where did you get that?" , with something even remotely as cool as this.
and casualy says I think it was dark side of the moon or something
that's a made up story though, Pink Floyd never used an ondioline.
The wall blows
@@ismaelbelda1I like most of Floyd's music, but I'd rather slit my wrists than spend five minutes with them.
Everything Mark does and everything Mark says is pure, unadulterated oddball awesomeness.
testify
Amen!
ARE WE NOT MEN?
That's Devo and their intelligent humor. I remember playing Devo's version of Are you experienced to a Hendrix fan and he was aghast and called it sacrilege. Hahaha.
@@amadd5641 🤣🤣
Devo was my first favorite band. In 78 I was 5 years old and I can remember jokohomo cranking in my house. The entire album both sides loud through JBLS and loving every note you guys have made me very happy.
I saw Devo in 1978 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. absolutely amazing. mainly punks and skin heads at the gig. they were such happy days
I like that on one of his stompboxes, it has 'input' & 'outpoot'. 🤘😂❗
Mark is a genius! Devo is sooo underrated and undervalued! I’ve been circuit-bending for years! I so agree with his musical philosophy!
This man made Crash Bandicoot's BOSS ASS MUSIC
Mark Mothersbaugh is the coolest guy ever
I love how he ends up using his hands to control the stomp boxes while playing the synth with his foot!
Mark is a true artist. What I think I admire most his willingness to experiment and never stray into precious realms. For him nothing seems sacrosanct, he just keeps creating.
I like the way he talks, he seems so calm. He's a true artist, I really like him.
Saw DEVO in Sao Paulo Brazil in 2007... they sound exactly the same as the studio versions! Incredible! Mark's voice didn't age at all!
yeah they lay it down for sure
"Like" just because "Girl U Want" remains my favorite Devo song to this day, and he just frickin' nailed it.
Mark is smart, he uses words I need to look up the meaning
Oh BS!
That weird instrument he plays at the beginning reminds me that some people play an instrument...but SOME people just have music oozing out of them. It's like he has the spirit of Apollo possessing him
Love the tempo of this video. MM seems so "chill" and relatable. The Pink Floyd and Iggy Pop stories are gold. Great work capturing it!
Mark is really dedicated and never stopped WORKING as a musician for over 50 years (my entire lifetime). He has given work to some of my friends (PPG +/- Rugrats?). Inspiring.
awesome girl uwant version
Used to play 'Are We Not Men' when it first came out, my friends hated it, even scratched the album up.
I kept playing it.
Those are no friends at all! A "friend" of mine once threw my CD copy of Hot Snakes "Suicide Invoice" out the window of my car. I made him crawl through a ditch until he found it and promised that if it skipped, he'd be walking home.
I still have the original album (scratched copy). WB Records.
The clicks on 'Too Much Paranoias' became a part of the soundscape.
My mom asked my brother and I, who were each 12 and 10, to play our favorite songs back then. My brother played "Too much Paranoias" off the new DEVO album and I played "Debra Kadabra" by Zappa/Beefheart. She never asked again.
You could spend a month in there and never play the same instrument twice
Noticed that Mark has worked on the soundtrack for Tiger King and remembered how much I loved Devo. Great insight into his creative process lads
Only Mark would have me goggling the architect of this great space that he calls his studio.
Thanks Mothersbaugh, very cool interview COOL JUNK and creative space.
Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
I was a Hollywood TourGuide and would do a bit about DEVO when passing on Sunset. He came out once when we were passing and I called him out and he seemed genuinely bemused
My favourite episode. LOL'd my arse off. Agreed that I could watch a multi-hour/day version of this
This video is an instant antidepressant. Something in that Akron water. Thanks you Mark and EQD :)
A Raga version of "Girl You Want", that was awesome! 😁
Iggy was kind of crazy, code for: very high on something. Thanks for the tour!
thanks for watching!
And people still ask me why Devo and MM are my all time favourite musicians...
Quite possibly the single greatest studio on American soil, and owned by one of my greatest inspirations. I wanted this to go on forever, amazing video.
I am So proud of DEVO
Enchanted. Gobsmacked. Breathless. One of my musical heroes. Thank you for this interview and tour!
I use Devo as a perfect meter of friendship, if anyone I know can get through 3 or 4 songs from them, mongoloid excluded... I know I got good friends.
In the late Seventies through the late Eighties, saying "I like Devo" was a common way for people who listened to Heavy Metal or Pop music to attempt to relate to people who listened to Punk Rock.
Mongoloid is forever the best song
I've never wanted something as bad as I want one of those melted Booji Boy masks...
As much as I'd love to own one someone should do reproductions of Booji Boy masks just so us Spuds and Spudess' can enjoy the fun
I would definitely have a melted one on my wall, probably in a frame
My ex-brother-in-law was a hard drinking, Sabbath/Dio type knucklehead. When DEVO appeared in his line of sight, he went totally berserk, confounding both peer and parent. The transformation was hilarious, he, disciplining siblings with his belt, berating them for being spuds, beautiful mutants. It went on for years, dragging friends to shows, being arrested wearing a boiler-suit...
Truly beautiful. Honestly.
I played in a shambolic, half-lit, country/punk band outta Vancouver (Cadaver Dogs - one LP "Pariah Social") and, our individual backgrounds ran the gamut from theatrical rock - two of us had played with THOR (Yes, THAT Thor) Gram Parsons/Black Crowes, Ramones and Ramones inspired pop/punk and, soul/post punk. We were referred to as "the Blue Cheer of Country" which was pretty much spot on (bloody loud).
We only shared 5 bands which we unanimously liked:
DEVO
MOTORHEAD
NEIL YOUNG
STOOGES
BOWIE
Hahahahahaha!!!! This is awesome! And true of the times - we knew of similar situations.
Circa 79-80 my two older siblings loved Sabbath and Devo in equal measure.
On the mark with Mark. He is a true musical madman/genius.
Devo was my first concert!
Wow!!!! Bob 2 & Mark shacked with Iggy Pop! Been a DEVOite since at least 1983, never knew that little tidbit of info……fun times those were, sheeeesh!
what a treasure this man is! would love to watch a whole tv series documentary about his studio life
This video isn’t long enough. I could listen and watch Mark all day long. Devo is one of the best ever.
Wow! loved watching this! Mark is unreal.. I want to hear that Iggy pop song!!! NYET!
"Ich bin nur fünf fuß eins!"
Love this version of “Girl You Want”🤣👍
Everything Mark does seems to put a smile on my face!
I've watched this before but this time I just can't stop laughing at the pure genius and humor. Damn that is amazing. Love you "this art band" De-vo.
hero of all nerd musicians
This guy has history in his gears.. ❤
There's a lot to be said for limited equipment. The most creative I've ever been is with a bass guitar, my brother's monophonic synth and a drum machine (that I found in a junk shop). Recording onto a four track cassette machine with just a reverb for effects. That was twenty five years ago, but even today I prefer a simple synth like an Ensoniq ESQ1 (a classic synth that is still affordable - go out and buy one before the prices get silly) and a bunch of guitar pedals over soft synths and a DAW.
I was at my most creative when recording when I had nothing but the kind of equipment you're talking about. A Fostex four track cassette recorder, a Roland SH-101, Casio CZ-1000, Yamaha RX-21 drums. Mixed through pretty cheesy home stereo speakers. 😆
I use this band as a barometer for picking friends
wanna be friends? ^_^
Unfortunately I have no friends because of this
ok bitch tits
Devo were the first band i was into. I even stole my dads freedom of choice tape. I was 6 or 7, early 80s. So when Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails came out, i was excited, cause i already knew where they were coming from. Maybe not depeche mode so much, but to me that was the next logical step.
My wife, however, hates this shit. I just tell the kids, i didnt marry her for her music tastes or id be a 40 yr old virgin!
Man, another legend, together with Money Mark. So consistently cool and creative you wouldn't believe.
I love you, Mark Mothersbaugh. Hims gots stuffs. He funny. Me wuvzies. ✨🤗✨
What a great mind and warm personality. Mark’s work has always been part of my life, excellent to her his views on enjoying the making process.
A true legend!!! Still humble.. witty.. funny..classy...got to live this man!!!
That was so much fun I wanna hang out there for like a month at least.
Amazing musician, thank you for this
Damn, I need a recording of that medieval version of The Girl You Want
Oh hell yes! Thanks EarthQuaker. I've been trying to devolve for decades now but I fear I'll never quite reach Mothersbaugh level.
Made my day...outstanding!
The coolest guy
This should be 1 hour long
Agree
Mark is so creative.
Boss Episode Guys!! Added to Favorites!!!
I love how Brian Eno ends up everywhere always. Devo was my first concert in 1982 in San Francisco. They were perhaps the first band that I obsessed over. Weirder, wilder, and more subversive than any of their peers, they put Akron on the map along with Chrissie Hynde. The fact that they lived with Iggy Pop just shows how it’s all one big dysfunctional family from space. Mark is the great frontman who lived happily ever after in Hollywood. They devolved into the greatest threat to John Denver fans everywhere. Many blessings to the Spuds and many thanks for staying relevant for all time. We are all DEVO forever.
🫶
Mark has a killer guitar collection!!!!
Thank you. This is wonderful.
thanks for watching!
i love DeVo
Outstandingly cool. Thank you for all these. So many insights.
"She's Just a Girl" sung by a Moroccan. Nice. I'd love to jam with this guy, but I'd never see sunlight again!
RIP Mark ... you were a true original.
He isn’t dead, man.
So awesome.
Seeing Devo on SNL doing Satisfaction & Jocko Homo was such a stunning moment, we didn't understand but we couldn't look away.
This is so excellent.
He would grab the transmisser. Lol. Such a great musician.
Awesome version of Girl U Want!
so great!
I saw a pedal taped to his guitar on late night tv in the late 70s and the rest is history.
( my full circle moment,
He bought some circuit bent CDs from me) I was floored .
This is a great video.
Rock on!
@@EarthQuakerDevicesI saw a device in his collection that a friend gave me too. Yeahhhh
This is incredible.
The "Reductive" (like Subtractive) vs the Additive Synthesis analogy is SO on point..
THIS IS RAD - pure and simple. Thanks for sharing!!! Long live DEVO - tied for the best band of all time. period. Iggy was "kinda crazy" LOL! This is now among my favorite things on YT - and - on "Earth" --- BTW - I need 100 more episodes of Mark going through stuff. The world needs it. Thanks.
More Please!
I watched this back when it came out and decided to do so again. I like this peek back into DEVO's history. Also, the first time I watched it I couldn't tell you who Lisa Bella Donna was. Since I've gotten my Matriarch and Grandmother last year I now know who she is and what she can get done with some equipment and patch cables! Even though I play a lot of DEVO tunes, especially the early stuff on my bass my desire to delve into synths was actually brought on by Fartbarf. The plus side of getting into synths is that for me to play DEVO's songs that actually had synth bass lines, I no longer have to get by with just my bass.
I love this! Whoever wrote the captions did a baffling job, but I'm grateful that Mark was given plenty of time to speak.
W0W...fascinating interview 😲
those glasses are fucking FIRE
Totally awesome.
OMFG that Girl U Want version at the beginning
TOTAL ART- Genius Mark Mothersbaugh.
That rendition of 'girl you want' at the start, was awesome.
Thanks guys
Our pleasure!
