- Mario C likes to keep it clean!
It’s not every day that we get invited to kick it with producers immortalized in Beastie Boys lyrics. We met up with Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty engineer / producer Mario Caldato at his Hollywood home studio to dig through his endless collection of gear, in search of the perfect party rockin’ piece. And we found something. Mario C is the lucky owner of the original Check Your Head collage.
We spent hours looking through bin after bin of amazing gear: vintage Mu-Trons, MPCs, a Roland TR-303, you name it. But we couldn’t leave without a little Transmisser jam time. Aided by bassist and pedalhead Juan Alderete, we hooked up our resonant reverberator to record some ambient bass. “You get your sound and you kick in, like ‘Boom!’ I’m there.”

I interned at Grand Royal Records in Atwater Village during the late 90's. That photo collage was still hanging in the studio during that time. I have always wondered what happened to it! Glad I stumbled upon this video for multiple reasons.
I brought Mario back to that studio. My pal Ryan is in that space now. It's still a studio!! The back room is a speak easy and they have art events. They ripped some sheetrock off of some walls and all of the original graffiti is still there and perfectly preserved! It's so wild. ruclips.net/user/shorts_FvqA2HLLtQ
That must’ve been a fun job.
too short! wanna see more of his process and history!
Mario C likes to keep it clean
Mario C, you can’t front on that!
Gonna shine like a sunbeam
keepon rapping cause that s my dream
I’m so bummed that Mario didn’t have any involvement in the Beasties book. He was such a vital ingredient in their survival.
We went to so many amazing studios during this epic outing, however Mario and his place was absolutely my personal favorite.
Perfect vibe. Perfect gear. Mario is just a beautiful cat...
Lisa Bella Donna time to do his new studio! I love this, So sick!
5:03 Yeah, so... I keep my 303 in a plastic bin on the bottom shelf. :)
Was lucky to work with Mario C., in Portugal, in 98, for a compilation of Portuguese bands(Tejo Beat). He was a sweet and calm person, and could speak a few Portuguese words too,I think he was maried to a Brazilian lady, by that time....Humble and very 'approchable' It was short, but nice!
man i love this one. he seems like such a sweet guy, very down to earth and amazing.
Grande Mario.... brasileiro de orgulho
o velho nao mora no brasil ha mais de 40 anos, ele nao é brasileiro
The Brasílian flag is in the Studio, cool, Nice, Nice, gears, great stuff, wow!
thanks for watching!
Whoa, the TB-303 just hidden away like it's not a $3000 vintage piece...
AND SHE IS ALL BEND !!
it's like a rare violin they will never truly make again. That's why it has risen in price. And btw, it's been almost 40 years since they came out... and most of them I see are still working very well. Lets check in on an MPC Live in 40 years and see how its doing (or not doing for that matter).
those boxes are fulla $
not exactly gear one uses every day - it's kind of a chachki effect. you know, novel.
This makes want to listen to the beastie boys again
def should
pure gold was made with all these fun toys....and yeah the 303 just chillin´in a box
that first album he put on is an incredible 2 album set - USA reissue of "inactin "and "Parathaphus B" by Michal Urbaniak - A polish fusion musician... most of the Tribe Called Quest's 3rd album was samples from it.
Every single piece is quality.
This one goes out to my man Mario C....my brotha ADROCK..cuttin it up on the turn tables......
Super excellent!! Love lovin this. Thanks!!!

The most most most underrated producer ever fr but I guess Mario C likes to keep it clean

I dont know who owns the masters. I would love mario c to do a Beastie Boys remix album. We the fans need it.
Love the way he chucks the 303 on the floor ;-)
THis series is theee best!!!
This is tremendous.
thanks for watching!
I would totally be like a little kid in a candy store, sitting at his studio tinkering on all those instruments so much inspiration!
great stuff!
Rad!
Looks like heaven
Respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I looove your videos
Juan is just everywhere, haha! I feel like I'm gonna wake up some morning and he'll be on my couch jamming on my fretless.
He's only there when you sleep.
I got out of bed this morning, and he was doing dishes from last night. Trip.
Haha Foreal.
This is when a man has earned his Moog Baseball cap! BRAVO sir. 🎹🏆
That Rhodes looks like it's in phenomenal shape...
Very humble dude. Great vintage gear. Some will never know the history of some things that were built and probably never even care to know. (sigh) To them I say,...show a little respect please. I still remember rolling with a house DJ once, who played CDs at his parties (with a compact device that had 2 trays in it). He proudly said to me, "Man I'm glad I didn't have to go thru the era of toting all those records around to play". I proudly told him, "Dude too bad, you have missed out some good times". 😉
I'm assuming that it made u chose the records that truly mattered cause u only have so much room to haul them around .
Make one with dust brothers!
When a company allows studios to show ALL the equipment , that tells me a lot . I'm going to look into buying something from EarthQuaker now . I look at audio the same as I look at auto . A lot of different parts/tools go into making a badass muscle car . Great video series !!!
Notice how none of it's new stuff tho? Vintage stuff only? Hmmmmmm! I guess it worked on you!
WOW!!!!
Always wondered about this stuff. I remember this guy climbing a light pole in Pontiac Michigan. It was insane.
Wow thank you
It's our pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Nevermind "Cribs." This is the show to watch.
🙌
The TB-303 is lying around somewhere in a box. :D Supercool dude!
Tens of thousands in vintage gear sitting in tupperware totes in a garage... GODDAAAAAAMN!
Chad Bartel hundreds of thousands even
he also worked on odelay, what a legend
Is it bad that I was more excited about the casio nugget of a keyboard on top of the Gibson organ than the Gibson, as it was something I didn't expect to see? xD
good spot.....one of those ones with the old rom cards and play along lights...
Sweet Moog hat!
MARIO C!!
💯
Viva Mario C
OMG!!! The promised land!!!
I had to post your playlist of all these "Show Your Junk" treks on my FB. They're amazing! As many people have said, the only "complaint" would be that they are too short :-)
Thank you!!
Thanks for the love Doug! It means so much. More to come in the future!
@@EarthQuakerDevices Hey there! I'm in Vancouver and, as you likely know, we've got some exceptionally well respected engineers/studio operators here - large scale mega-producers, long-term, internationally lauded and/or newer mavericks operating in converted garages or, basements or, over a men's bathouse...etc...
You should swing through here someday...Adam Payne, Cecil English, Dave Rave, Felix Fung, Brian Else, Jesse Gander, Jason Solyom, Kirk Douglas, Gord Nicholl, etc...
wow! thats a lotta stuff to keep alive! you gotta plug that stuff in time to time to keep the electronics (caps) from going dead! I lost a few pieces cause of that!
He pulls out one of the most epic albums right at the start.
What was that LP he put on the turntable? Please, do educate me....
I think it's Artist: Michal Urbaniak Group. Song: The Beginning
LEYKIS 101!!!
wow modern music hisrory!
I think hes keeping secrets. I've read interviews were one of the beastie boys said they used multiple samplers, sp1200 of course, and emu emax, as well as others. But what I've always wanted to know is how they recorded their vocals. It almost sounds like a memory man ran thru some crazy hp filters and one of those weird 1950s radio mics .. if anyone knows, reply I'm actually producing and engineering an old school style rap record and am still playing with rigs to record vocals. And I kind of have an idea of how I want it to sound but still not quite sure
Mario C. likes to keep it clean!!
alwayz
used to have a conn min-o-matic!

thanks!
wow
More like Mario’s toy. It’s fun to hang out at his house.

I think it's Artist: Michal Urbaniak Group. Song: The Beginning
He just has a tb 303 in a box somewhere under a shelve.
