I love the way this guy works! Total creativity without restrictions and he doesnt take himself too damn seriously thus fostering a brilliant one of a kind atmosphere to work in! Hes produced some of my absolute favorite albums and it would be a dream come true to work with him! He is a treasure to modern music!
I had the pleasure of spending a day with Joe at his studio a while back and he's one of the most interesting and inspirational guys you'll ever meet if you're into music production. He has a legendary story for everything you look at and go "whoa, what is that?" just like in this video. He's not just a sound engineer and producer, he's a true artist and master of his craft.
What a great interview! It's guys like this (Steve Albini, Tchad Blake etc.) that make the whole 'going to the studio' process unique. Anyone can record an album on their laptop but working with these guys gives you the creativity and experimental process that you can't find anywhere else.
@@randallN-sw6ee i mean... shit... ive got a few in the rotation. there are some affordable ribbon mics out there & once you start with them its easy to want to use them on all sorts of shit because they sound so groovy!
I will never appreciate anything “modeled”. How anyone can claim it’s better than the original is way past my understanding. How can the modeled sound be better? It’s missing what makes the original what it is, fundamentally making it not as good. Even CDs are missing something that only analog has. I will not compromise my sound. Vinyl and analog all day baby.(as I push my strymon big sky out of view.- to be fair it’s the only digital pedal I own).
I realy appreciate some 15 minutes of kicking the feet up the table and having guys that know their stuff talk with alot of passion! Love you guys for the pedals and as i just recently discovered, the "Show Us Your Junk" series, keep it up! Love from Switzerland
Fantastic! I feel like I would get overwhelmed in there. I love recording, you finally get to listen to the songs. Those stories of experimenting in the studio, just awesome.
Most of these places are spaceships.. with the coolest alien hosts ever. I'd love to explore any one of em for even just 2 minutes! Thanks for sharing with us :)
If Earthquaker could reimagine the Space Station you'd be my heroes...I think Joe would approve. A line of Earthquaker plugins would also be pretty cool.
"everybody got the same plugin, everybody got that plugin" holly crap, just go and search for "how to record a bass track" and this is exactly this, one pluging, the same shit sound and boom, 99.9% of today's records! Thank you Earthquacker, i didn't know that guy at all but i love him now :D !
Lol, Joe knew he'd be crucified by T00L fans! 😏 I think any fan who actually knows who this guy is, will forgive him for not knowing the names of songs. 😉 The song names don't matter, he doesn't care, they sound good. 🤘
LOL - *points hand at object* "You've Seen Enough Of That." that shit has been stuck in my head for what ever reason and i tend to pull out that phrase on the regula hahaha. especially in the studio.. engineer asked "are u really letting that compressor crank and spank like that??" -- me: "yeah. i want that particular piece squashed............ *points hand at object* "You've Seen Enough Of That."
This is so inspiring. I wish that spirit of experimentation was the norm in recording. It's always something I've found fascinating about the process of making albums. It comes at a cost in time and money, but the sounds and vibe are untouchable.
Have you heard STAG by the Melvins? Genius work. this has to be the nicest guy in the industry. If one day I had the songs and the money, I would choose this guy to work with, just for the kick of it. I like his "nerdy" approach to sound, he obviously has a sense of humor and he's a master at his craft. What else can you ask for, a Kit Kat? He's a collector!
This is a documentary of an amazing but dying breed of recording studios. Labelmoney acts like the Queens are growing scarse and the recordings with em.
Lawnmower and Garden Supply Studio was opened by Kevin Gilbert... The man who wrote Sheryl Crows first and most popular album and founder of the Tuesday Night Music Club. When Sheryl hit it big with Kevin’s song “All I Wanna Do...” she fucked over Kevin and the rest of the TNMC who wrote these songs for her, by firing them and hiring different musicians for the tour to essentially be “the band” (a gig they were promised)... Kevin rightfully hated Sheryl and it was compounded by Sheryl’s habit of taking songwriting credit in the press. Kevin did get a bit of revenge when Disney was very insistent on using “All I Wanna Do...” in its advertising and Kevin would not sign off. Even though He and Sheryl would have made a ton of money off of it... In His last argument with Disney, he asked them if they even knew what the song was about. They said “sure, it’s about having fun”... Kevin said “No... Its about getting fucked up at 9 in the morning|..” and that was the end of that!.. Kevin passed away not long after that but his music was stellar and definitely worth a listen...
i dunno man, the story sorta sounded like he was baked somewhere or somthing. i mean, good on him if he wasn't, and if ur cool, but alotta guys reinforce the stereotype.
They actually picked him up in the band when the first bass player left because of family stuff. He never played bass in his life but he was their best mate. Needless to say he doesn't care much about the instrument, maybe a touch more these days, but these guys are the tightest friends
My dude. You forgot to talk about Kevin Gilbert who dug the dirt out of the building so he could make that place a studio and go on to make his own great, under-appreciated work on his own and for plenty of others.
Agreed, the afterneath is so fucking good. An absolute apocalypse when using an Acopulco Gold, great for intros. EQD is my only pedal brand from now on (and some boss stuff here or there XD)
“I try not to buy guitar amps anymore. If I can’t get a guitar sound out of this, I’m pretty pathetic.” Points to literal wall of amp heads😂 Legend.
Listening to people like Joe, makes me realise that I know jack shit about sound. He’s forgotten more than most people will ever learn.
I love the way this guy works! Total creativity without restrictions and he doesnt take himself too damn seriously thus fostering a brilliant one of a kind atmosphere to work in! tool, kyuss, queens of the stone age, volbeat, soundgarden, melvins genius man
And the criminally underrated Fair to Midland.
Monster Magnet man
Avenged Sevenfold too
Not to mention the terrific depth of the Wavering Radiant sound (last Isis record)... so immersive... I love his production style🔥
This series is pure joy.
agreed

Thanks for watching! I always find it interesting how an engineer's methods and workflow influence the finished recording.
EarthQuakerDevices me too. Any other videos you recommend on stuff like this?
More of this stuff please, its incredible!
thank you!
"I would rather set up 18 ribbon mics than slide shit around on a computer till it sounds good" words of wisdom
"Evil" Joe tellin' us how it's done!
lol i dont
I would do that to...if I had 18 ribbon mics laying around :-)

“But I can’t tell the difference between digital and analog”-- some liar or deaf person
Analog God. The beautiful thing about his records is they are full spectrum on the eq, you can dial them in to many locations and they sound great
I will never appreciate anything “modeled”. How anyone can claim it’s better than the original is way past my understanding. How can the modeled sound be better? This was the best one yet. Hope you guys keep this series up. Really awesome stories and inspiring creativity from Joe.

Seriously! Gear envy is off the charts over here...

thanks for checking it out!
That pikachu was in a weird Adam Jones video tour of the studio a few months ago. He dwelt on it for quite a spell.
Love the 'you've seen enough of that' aha very spinal tap.

chill af, yo
Man these videos are great! Kudos to the team that's responsible!
thanks for watching!
Joe is the most down to earth dude and inspires tons of us make better sounding records!
Joe rules! Thanks for watching! Stoked to hear what he does on the new Tool album.
That’s a cool dude with a cool studio .
Good luck with the new Tool !
1:18 "I'll give you a little history about the studio." I WANT HISTORY ON LIL ORPHAN ANNIE.
Really enjoyed this

Earthquaker plugins? noooooooooooope.
you've seen enough of that...
lol
This is my new favorite corner of the Internet. Many thanks EQD!
I find it interesting with the whole open plan layout of his place. Really chill.
Yeah, seems like it'd be an amazing studio to work in
most of us are working less than 400sq ft and making the real goods. maximum analog, minimum attitude and definitely about the craft and the music.

this guy is so badass haha lots of funny and cool things sitting around that studio
That just made me feel even better than I already do about owning my Afterneath.
13:54 that space station is a seriously underrated gem
My favorite episode so far. Stellar job guys, and thank you for all the fantastic creations, Joe! Much love from Romania
Another GREAT Episode!!! Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Joe, I've learned a lot from you.
I’ve watched this 50 times and just realized he’s flipping us off in the thumbnail
lol thanks for watching!

One for the Tool Army:
Joe is thinking about Rosetta Stoned while inadvertently quoting its lyrics.
"Can't remember what he said."
He needs to remember to write them down.
God damn shit the bed!

The story about Bullet reminds me of Seamus by Pink Floyd with the dog howling along. Class.

OMG - @1:41 - I have that whole series of Gibson posters from the 90’s!! Love those!
Stoner witch alone is legendary, then the 3 kyuss?! Awesome!
That Minarik was actually the first thing I noticed & got excited about, I have no life.
Peavey T-60s are amazing, we've been using one for years :)
Rosetta Stoned is the Tool song he was talking about
the man for guitar tones! remember a video with eric valentine, he said if you want huge guitars call joe barresi

Places like these make it easy to just write in the studio, look at all that inspiration

literally a dream to make record music here and have this man produce it

I had the yellow flanger too. Never should have traded it.
I'm learning so much from this series man, thank you guys for spending your time like this. All these interviews are uniquely amazing. Tyty
That flame guitar is a Moonstone, made by my friend Steve Helgeson!
No its not, not at all..Its a minarik inferno made by Minarik Guitars. i own one. Moonstone? Made by your friend aye? Um...

HEY BEN! thanks for watching 'em!
Wish they still made them!
We just put two new ones up since April! sheesh
This whole video kicks ass. the creator (or progenitor at least) of that Picachu I think is Dave wright of Not Breathing
Really odd that Joe did not mention Kevin Gilbert who founded Lawnmower Studios...
Can totally relate to the Ibanez Flanger. Sold it. Regretted it. But now have another vintage version :)
This is my kinda engineer, man.

Anyone know what song he could be referring to with the rolled up tube stereo vocal?
Sweet Willy Rollbar by the Melvins. It's right at the beginning, great song too. Off the Stoner Witch album in '94.
It's off Stag, I can't remember the song name. I think it's right before or right after "The Bloat"
