I always thought he had a unique, quirky sense of humor that is only him. No one else can be Pee Wee. Rest in peace, good sir.

Paul Reubens is the best. He is such a talented actor and comedian. I always have thought he was one of the best in the business.and always brings a smile to my face when I see him. I hope he is doing well, wherever he is.
I have fond memories of watching Peewee's Playhouse on Saturday morning...in my bachelor pad after I graduated from college. When Peewee's agent asked him to come to Los Angeles for a job, Peewee replied, "Nah, I think I'll stick it out here in Ft. Lauderdale".
Opened Instagram and got a quick gut punch. I loved Pee Wee Herman. What a genius character! Paul Reubens was a great actor and an original thinker. ❤️
THANKS SO MUCH for this. Brilliant guest. Dave is very cool for having him on so many times - from the very beginning. Paul Reubens was a genious and very quick and witty. His character specifically was a that type of character and this appearance shows it perfectly - with his eye rolling and calling Dave out on fireworks being lit at night "duh!" The simple green screen effect was very cool before many people had ever used it. Being an awesome guest in SNL or Letterman or in a comedy club was NO JOKE. He was as good as the best - and really understood humor and timing. And - still does!!! Thanks Paul!!! Thanks David Letterman for getting me through my teen years with the best content on TV. - I was fortunate enough to briefly meet Paul back stage at an Oingo Boingo show in Los Angeles - he obviously knew Danny Elfman well - him having done score music for the Tim Burton movies.
I wasn't born in the 80's but my mom introduced me to Pee-Wee Herman a little while after I was born, I was born in 2001 and Pee-Wee Herman was part of my childhood, I know Paul Reubens messed up a time or two, but people still loved Pee-Wee. RIP Paul Reubens, thanks for making my childhood awesome.
OK. I have to put this out there. In my NYC nightclub days, i opened for Pee Wee at Caroline's in Chelsea. That appearance was really more adult, but he was formulating the Playhouse during that stand. He was the nicest of all the performers at Caroline's, hands down. Professional, engaging, and if you can find footage of his joke about the deer hunter, PLEASE post it!

I hope so-it looks like he didn't even want to engage with some of the stuff and was annoyed haha. Doesn't seem to be like that with everybody else but I hope you are right!@@biggusdickus1689
To always be in character must be something extraordinary. This was like if Dave had a random nine year old boy on the show. I love moments like when Pee-Wee suddenly turns to the reacting audience and yells "Shut up"; it's one of the things he did regularly on the talk show circuit during the 1980s, and it was always a laugh. Another great appearance he did was the time he went on Joan Rivers's show and they made fun phone calls. Paul is so funny without a script, just doing what he does as Pee-Wee.
A lot of people rag on Pee Wee Herman as silly and not-serious humor. But not only does he have charm, he is taking huge risks in being in being 100% in character in live situations. Jim Carey and Andy Kaufman played with this concept live, but Paul "Pee Wee" Rubens takes it all-the-way by becoming a different persona altogether. That's where transcendence begins---to erase your own identity. Pee Wee is like a Jim Henson Muppet made flesh and bone. This is improve at it's most daring.
"I just said it a minute ago. Deja vu." 😐😑😐... 🤣😂 Mr Paul Reubens was The Best! My gosh, I loved him. His timing was flawless. What a fun and sweet man he was. My kids loved his movie and his Saturday morning show. I loved his snarky comic book store owner character on the Everybody Loves Raymond show. He was hilarious! 🤣 What a silly, funny, sweet and beautiful man. I know he's making the angels in Heaven laugh, that's for sure. Rest in peace, Mr Reubens. 💐
I think I can safely say that he's my favorite comedian of all time. The world makes sense when I'm watching him. He makes childlike sense of the world in a way that kind of hurts, in a good way.
Oh my gosh I freaking LOVE Pee Wee, la la la😂🤣🥰 I first saw him on HBO around 1980 where he had his Pee Wee’s Playhouse stage show. Jambie, Captain Carl, Miss Yvonne (the most beautiful woman in puppet land) and all the hysterical characters. I loved when he would show old footage from educational films from the 50’s and 60’s and narrate them😂. I was about 15 then and my friends and I absolutely loved him!!! Loved his Saturday morning show too. He’s the best!!!
When seen years ago, it was just pure laughs. Now, with his passing, you watch it feeling sweetness and love for him also. What a great legacy to leave behind.
Does Pee Wee have a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame yet? That's what really counts, because you have to pay thousands and thousands of dollars for it. You can't just get it by being popular. Heh-heh!
One of THE funniest characters ever created. And he was a great actor too. His role in “Blow” was wonderful and I remember being both surprised and delighted at his performance. A very, very talented man and another one gone far too soon. RIP, sir.
I remember watching Big Adventure on my friends Mom's 10 inch tv and at the start of the movie the screen died but we still had volume. We sat in the kitchen and just listened to the entire movie as we watched each other laugh so hard that we were literally crying. Thank you Pee Wee. Rest In Peace.
He truly was such a light and I felt okay being included in the play house. He really touched on serious things though, behind the veil. The world is cuckoo, “wake up” love you Paul thank you for laughs and good memories
Reubens was brave for going all in to create Pee Wee. This is a good argument for what we can achieve by letting go of fear and just being who we really want -- who we really are.
I am so fortunate to have seen Paul perform live as Pee Wee Herman back in the early 80s. He was just brilliant. Pee Wee's giant underpants was my favorite bit. They completely sold out at the concession stand. Beautiful, creative soul who's legacy is joy and laughter for millions. RIP
Yeah, that was hilarious but just the punchline without the joke isn't funny. Pee Wee tells the joke here: ruclips.net/video/pTzTKHEjW4Y/видео.html, and he starts telling the joke about 50 seconds into the clip.
Man, I loved Paul Rubens. Whether it was his series, Cheech and Chong or his two movies or even stand up. He was an 80s legend and his MTV comeback was even more legendary. RIP Paul
Boy, he seemed like a great guy. He was quick as lightning and always connected with the crowd. Along with the over-the-top nature of the character, he brought lots of nuance and subtlety too. He punctuated his act with nods to the crowd, eye rolls, and little side comments, and I think it was this kind of thing that made Pee-wee the kind of character that people just couldn't help but love--both kids and adults. He was just so damn likeable and entertaining. So, so good. Also, Paul Reubens, the man behind the bowtie, was such a sweet guy. To anyone who hasn't seen/heard them, I suggest watching Paul's appearance on Conan (the TBS show) and listening to his appearance on Conan's podcast. It's just Paul and Conan talking, and it's really, really great. Rest in peace, Paul.
Dave knew to give Pee Wee 15 minutes. Letterman was the king of late night for a reason. I remember Dave’s morning show and just imagine this at 10:00 in the morning.
this was well before the movie in 1985 and tv series in 86. The groundlings stage show was so successful he got Letterman. The power of Pee Wee was real. RIP Paul.
Thank you, Paul Reubens, for your zany antics on Pee Wee's Playhouse that made me laugh every week (plus at the movies!). R.I.P. You too Dave! Oh, sorry! You're not dead yet, but I sure miss you too.
I never watched Pee Wee but this is funny and weird in a good way.. my neighbors 5 year old daughter just was introduced to Pee Wee’s playhouse and she loves him..

Pee Wee! So his brilliance was to break character just every so often to let you in on the joke. Without that you would have had just another annoying comic. He had that warmth of letting you be his friend. Like Buster Keaton.
I loved PeeWee so much! I was a teen when he became so popular! I quote him all the time and send PeeWee gifs all the time. He was blacklisted for dumb stuff. Much respect!❤

Pee Wee has always been a straight up mood and he pointed that out in the ad. Genius! Level 💯
When seen years ago, it was just pure laughs. Now, with his passing, you watch it feeling sweetness and love for him also. What a great legacy to leave behind.
Love you, Pee Wee. My sincere thanks to you and Dave for all of the amazing memories.❤
Paul
Somebody give PeeWee an Oscar, a Nobel prize and the Medal of Freedom.
And some KY jelly.

Does Pee Wee have a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame yet? That's what really counts, because you have to pay thousands and thousands of dollars for it. You can't just get it by being popular. Heh-heh!
For his hair, right?
The world needs more classic Pee Wee
One of THE funniest characters ever created. And he was a great actor too. His role in “Blow” was wonderful and I remember being both surprised and delighted at his performance. A very, very talented man and another one gone far too soon. RIP, sir.
Letterman playing straight man to Pee Wee is the best thing this week.
I remember watching Big Adventure on my friends Mom's 10 inch tv and at the start
of the movie the screen died but we still had volume. We sat in the kitchen and just listened to the entire movie as we watched each other laugh so hard that we were literally crying.
Thank you Pee Wee. Rest In Peace.
Pee Wee's annual Halloween visits to see Dave are STILL hilarious!
I’m still laughing . Pee wee rules, he works the whole room.
To No Ryhthmjim: Pee Wee works the whole room. I got splashed by his liquid expression in the underground movie house room in Florida.
From his first appearances to when he was a star just a few years later he just developed and got really good really quickly. Amazing.
Bold, uncompromising, sui generis, committed, unassailable. His work lives on to bring joy & inspire.
I remember this episode vividly. I saw this and, on the basis of it, suggested to my Sunday school class that we all go see Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
He truly was such a light and I felt okay being included in the play house. He really touched on serious things though, behind the veil. The world is cuckoo, “wake up” love you Paul thank you for laughs and good memories
He spoke to us through the lines. So grateful I could see
Love you Paul. Thanks for all the joy and laughter.
Love Pee-Wee. Always. He is definitely one of the most original comedians of my childhood. ❣️
Reubens was brave for going all in to create Pee Wee. This is a good argument for what we can achieve by letting go of fear and just being who we really want -- who we really are.
Pee Wee, Jiminy Glick, Rodney Dangerfield, 3 Stooges... all original comic geniuses.
Pee Wee is just goofy. Nothing clever. Glick is a brilliant and witty parody on top of being goofy.
RIP Paul...Thank you for the love and the laughs.
RIP Pee Wee. Paul you were a singular talent and you will be missed.
RIP
Please explain!
Easily one of the most beloved entertainers ever…extraordinarily original…lovable persona…sad sad sad
I love Paul Reubens, and if you don't mourn his passing then I weep for your inner child. RIP Pee Wee.
It was always an event when Pee Wee was on the show. My favorite punchline of all time: “I don’t know his name but his face rings a bell.”
That was a fabulous bit. Remember watching that live. Woke up my Mom with my laughing!
Yeah, that was hilarious but just the punchline without the joke isn't funny. Pee Wee tells the joke here: ruclips.net/video/pTzTKHEjW4Y/видео.html, and he starts telling the joke about 50 seconds into the clip.
Funny as hell in my early 20's. Funny as hell at 60! RIP Paul Reubens. Thanks for all the laughs. Hope you are hanging out with Gilbert.
God speed. Thanks to Letterman for having him on so many times. Pee Wee (and Paul) will be missed.
Man, I loved Paul Rubens. Whether it was his series, Cheech and Chong or his two movies or even stand up. He was an 80s legend and his MTV comeback was even more legendary. RIP Paul
Pee Wee is and always will be awesome. I loved his show and movies. Makes me happy to watch him. Cool AF.
RIP, Pee Wee Herman. Many, many hours of marvelous entertainment, thanks!!
Paul created one of the most unique and iconic characters ever. There will NEVER be an equal. Rest in Peace, Mr. Rubens. ❤️
Rest in peace, paul. You'll be missed by many
Boy, he seemed like a great guy.
Pee Wee passed today. 🖤 Bye sweet spirit. You were my teen world. 🌈🫶
Pee-wee
Rest In Peace Pee Wee Herman you’re riding your bike in heaven now😔🙏😢🙏
One of the best comedians ever.
The absolute brilliance of Paul Reubens is sorely missed .. there will be only one Pee Wee !
One of only a few that could ever
make David Letterman speechless.
Andy Kaufman is definitely on that list as well.
Drew Barrymore too
Richard Simmons too.
Dave knew to give Pee Wee 15 minutes. Letterman was the king of late night for a reason. I remember Dave’s morning show and just imagine this at 10:00 in the morning.
"Pee Wee Herman, you're my hero!" RIP to a true legend. 😢😢😢
Pee-wee 😅
this was well before the movie in 1985 and tv series in 86. The groundlings stage show was so successful he got Letterman. The power of Pee Wee was real. RIP Paul.
The world just seemed like a much better and brighter place back then.
Because of Letterman's tissue comment?
It wasn't safer or better, all the bad stuff was just hidden under the rug
RIP Paul Reubens. Thanks for the laughs!!
Laughing until I cry. Crying until I laugh. R.I.P. Paul Reubens.
Thank you, Paul Reubens, for your zany antics on Pee Wee's Playhouse that made me laugh every week (plus at the movies!). R.I.P. You too Dave! Oh, sorry! You're not dead yet, but I sure miss you too.
I never watched Pee Wee but this is funny and weird in a good way.. my neighbors 5 year old daughter just was introduced to Pee Wee’s playhouse and she loves him..
he does one of the voice of fhe kids form a nightmare before Christmas
When pee wee Herman Paul Reubens, goes into character I totally forget that it’s a CHARACTER,! Brilliant, talented, and to this day at 65 years old I still remember I almost had my son 36 years ago in front of peewees playhouse TV!! I laughed so hard!
Pee Wee was a comic genius, and a total original.
Love this guy..hysterical. Pee wee's playhouses was terrific..bring it back!!
Pee Wee's playhouse still brilliant wake-and-bake TV. Brilliant! Chairy. Top drawer.
I was looking for someone who remembers peewee playhouse
Such a warm, sweet man who cared about everyone he knew and wanted them to be happy.
Pee Wee! So his brilliance was to break character just every so often to let you in on the joke. Without that you would have had just another annoying comic. He had that warmth of letting you be his friend. Like Buster Keaton.
R.I.P. Paul Reubens, thank you for the laughs ❤
I loved PeeWee so much! I was a teen when he became so popular! I quote him all the time and send PeeWee gifs all the time. He was blacklisted for dumb stuff. Much respect!❤
Pee Wee on Letterman.
Classic Comedy Gold!
