Welcome to the Letterman RUclips Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. These highlights have been artisanly-produced, carefully-curated, and chosen completely at random by an old computer that used to pick numbers for the New York Lotto back in the 90’s. Развлечения
Please never stop this. There is a late show sized hole in my soul I can’t fill and all these of late have been a warm soothing nostalgia in a cruel cold world. We see you. We appreciate you. Surely there is a documentary worth making here. 100’s of hours. Long live letterman.
So much stuff that I hadn't seen before. This particular video is packed with really good bits.
Nostalgia for Late Night is made all the more poignant by the mediocrity of the late night fare we're nightly treated to nowadays.
Donz has thousands of hours of the shows on RUclips. It’s not like we haven’t had Letterman to watch.
@@MTVCOPS I’m aware. I’m saying in this format of reflection and cast perspectives.
@@MTVCOPS And soon the official channel with have many hours of content. And in the best quality available.
Who doesn’t love Paul? Huge part of the show’s success.
He's a kooky Kat 😎
I loved his autobiography. One of my favorite Canadians.
He really was. He fit into the show a million different ways, hugely contributed to the laughs. He was the ultimate sidekick. Not to mention the music.
Different show without him for sure!
He was great with Dave. His interviews are terrible though, won't shut up or even let his guests finish a thought.
In 1987, Del Shannon came on Late Night and did Runaway backed by Paul and TWMDB. When it came time for the keyboard part, Paul just transformed from goofy band leader to full on rock star and killed that part. He just went off and it opened my eyes. It made such an impression on 11-year-old me and I still think about it today. I just hope Paul knows that there are people out here that see him like that
He was on because Runaway had a resurgence due to being the theme song for Crime Story, a police/ mob drama set in the late fifties/early sixties. It was on NBC.
I just recommended this performance to someone a few comments up. It is one of my favorite Paul moments.
Man. I totally took this show for granted at the time. I am so grateful for the ability to watch these now. So superior to anything now
Glad I’m not the only one that feels that way
I’ve been on a letterman binge lately
This is without a doubt the best new youtube channel... whoever is making this behind the scenes a sincerest thank you.
A good deal of praise should be thrown to Don Giller (RUclips channel of the same name) as some of these clips were most likely pulled from his collection. He has nearly everything David Letterman has ever done in his career on S-VHS tapes, including his early work in Indianapolis. Giller has now become the unofficial (kinda official) archivist of the show as he's now working directly with Letterman's people, which is a cool thing to see.
Paul is a musical genius and a warm-hearted, funny guy. Thank you, Paul, for being there all those years.
Watch Paul's performance when Del Shannon was on the show to play "Runaway". It's one of my absolute favorites. You could tell Paul was so excited and loving every minute of it.
Anyone else catch Jerry saying "Bye Larry" as Dave and Paul walked out the door?
Now that's good comedy!
I caught it. 😁
... and Dave said thanks, you too!
@@alukuhito I think he was saying it to Paul, since he looks a fair bit like Larry David, especially back then.
I think he meant Larry Sanders, the talk show host character played by Garry Shandling who was partly modeled after Dave. And that show’s set was one of Paul’s visits
That's because Jerry said "Oh no it's my weird cousin Larry" when he entered.
12:13 "That's not my finger." "That's OK, that's not my belly button." lol
In the fall of '95 my wife and I were on our honeymoon in NY. We were only in our early 20's. We stayed at the Best Western, thanks to mom. Waiting for our car in the parking garage my wife started yelling "Paul!, Paul!" like we were old friends. Paul came over and talked to us real nice. Thanks Paul.
"A little dialing music Paul". That always made smile whenever Dave said it.
Paul, you and Dave had the best moms!!!
Dylan wanting to meet Larry "Bud" is gold!! I miss these people so much😻
My respect for Bob Dylan just went up 1000x when he requested to meet Larry "Bud" Melman! That guy was my favorite character on Letterman! Haha
In another one of these many people said that "Bud" was a really cool guy and everyone who knew him really loved him.
Dave & Paul turned me into a nocturnal animal as a teenager.
Thought I was the only one
Paul was the greatest. Incredible music director, sharp comedic timing, and could banter with the best.
I didn't realize how much I've missed these guys until I watched this
I Thank you Paul for your stories and insight. We miss you all terribly. I always said that it wasn't officially Christmas until Darlene Love sang!
This beats anything on tv right now!
Dude. Serious goosebumps when James Brown came out! Ha! And on that note, Dave had the best band in televsion, starting with his NBC years until the last show they did on CBS. Fantastic!
I miss Dave's show so much. Such good television through the years, and nothing on television these days comes close.
Wow look at Paul's view from his apartment. Stunning. Such a talented musician.
I'm sure that's not the only one he has. The guy is rich.
@@dr.davidenglish778 He earned it!
Paul has played with more rockstars than anyone else on the planet
I remember that Freudian slip joke as the funniest thing my teenage self had ever heard. I'm so glad he included it!
Came here to post the same thing. They GOTTA include the Freudian slip joke!
Aww damn it. I miss The Late Show. Nobody will ever fill the World Wide Pants that Letterman and Paul wore.
Even when you pause the video, I swear you can still hear Paul go "Faaaaaabulous". Such is the power of the Shaffer.
got to meet Paul one afternoon as he was walking out of Rupert's Hello Deli and he could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Took the time to take a picture with me while being engaging and hilarious and friendly as a neighbor. Once he left, I said something about how great that was and Rupert said, "he really loves meeting fans." I truly love his work on SNL and Letterman and the Rock n Roll HOF shows.. and I am very grateful that I got that chance to bump into a living legend and have an interaction I'll always remember.
Thanks for sharing that.
I miss this show dearly. I’ve been to over 20 show tapings. I loved the chemistry between Dave and Paul. I don’t watch late night anymore.
No wonder it was cancelled
You're missing out on so much.
"Hey Kramer!" LMAO
Paul was always so funny because he had the image of the ultimate hipster.
@Jeff Spicolli He was part of the entertainment industry, working for a prominent comedian. He assumed a persona that the public liked. Part of his schtick was needling Letterman under the guise of agreeing with him. But, just like so many comedians have a persona they drop in other contexts, Schaffer did the same in his serious interviews.
A nutty, nutty hipster.
moments like the call to Paul's mother is why Letterman was and will always be the best
Omg Paul's mom was hilarious. Finding Dave was the most 90s thing ever
Anytime things happened outside the studio, you knew it was a good show. I LOVED the "Hello Deli" skits
Did anyone else catch Seinfeld saying “Goodbye, Larry”? 🤣🤣
Great to see Paul. Now I'm patiently waiting for Biff.
Of all the awful things this world has produced, this is not one of them. God bless you, Paul Schaffer.
World producing nothing.... we do
@Charle LePage so bless god for peadeophile then.
Paul is a nutty nutty type of guy
BERMUDA
Swingin' collection of clips. I met Paul a few years ago, right after Late Show went off the air (we live in the same town) and talked with him for a few minutes. He couldn't have been nicer.
I'm from the same town as Paul (Thunder Bay, Ontario), and he brought most of the former Late Show band with him up here to do a show once. Considering he's from here, I found it difficult to get to him after the show, but I did get a picture with him. I did get to talk shortly with band members Tom "Bones" Malone and Felicia Collins though.
That tradition with Darlene Love is so very special to me and I suppose to Late Show fans as well. Thanks for reflecting on those great musical moments Paul.
Around Christmas, I still get on here and find a version of Darlene doing her song on the Late Show. Usually watch a few different years. It's a tradition.
Paul was the right guy at the right time. Late Night/Late Show would not be what they are without him. Musical highlights were too numerous to recall, but Darlene Love was a tradition that I miss every year. Rock on Paul and thank you.
Yes, great to see Paul! Miss that show and all those folks.
I remember all of these!
The one with Paul's mother was the greatest thing ever. Just perfect delivery out of nowhere.
Also, has anyone ever seen Paul and Lorne in the same room together?
Some of the SNL anniversary specials. Paul was playing piano for Bill Murray when he was doing a bit.
These staff memories are the best!!!!!!
The time Paul was a guest host on the Late Show was a fantastic program.
And the moment he asked Julia Roberts “the question”…. Such an iconic moment.
I cant believe "the question" didnt make the cut. I remember watching it when it aired it was awesome.
What question?
Yeah that was an iconic Paul moment! Probably too risqué for today's media culture?
@@JC20XX ruclips.net/video/mRKOz94yqSs/видео.html
What question???🙂
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE THE CHANNEL LAUNCHED AAAAAAAAAAAAAH
I miss that show so much
Chris Elliot as Paul is... the greatest revelation of pure genius the world has ever known.
Saw that Seinfeld clip many times before, in context it's so much better!
It wasn't Christmas until Darlene Love came out to sing! I loved that so much and looked forward to it every year!
Please make this Best Of a permanent show for all of time. Please.
5:12 the funniest thing Paul Schafer ever said. 😂
It kills me how much of Paul and the band we never got to see/hear. So talented and such a great list of songs they'd play. If this channel could upload some of the tapes...
What a wonderful surprise to come across this video. Paul is one of a kind - a lovely, gracious man with an undeniable gift for music and a great sense of humor .... He was the perfect "side-kick", straight man and complement to David Letterman. Late Night with David Letterman will remain in the top 10 list of my favorite television programs forever. I miss Dave and Paul very much .... sigh ....
There is no doubt in my mind that Paul Schaffer had the best band in television history . I wish it would tour ! I mean Will Lee alone is one the top bass players. When they played with James Brown in the 80s it was , television history ! There were so many musical moments like that . I really wish there was a compilation album for all the hundreds of fantastic performances.
great band. awesome groove
Hi Stephen, I absolutely 100% wholeheartedly agree with your comment. I saw them in 2010 at a live taping. After being a fan for so many years, I was absolutely gobsmacked by the CBSO. Will Lee, Felicia Collins, Anton Fig... Such a high pedigree of badasses.
Wherever I was then, I would tune in and NOT MISS Darlene on Dave's show. Every year it got more and more special, and the show would always end spectacularly with music and confetti, and I did not want it to end, that's how fantastic it was.
I want that last December performance to be put up on RUclips this Christmas -- it's a song for everyone
That was HUGHLY entertaining!!!! Thank you so much!
"Hey Kramer!" LOL
No one has ever matched Dave's spontaneity and pure humor. I still miss him. And I really miss Paul's Friday night cape schtick.
Paul if you ever see this, one of my personal favorite moments is when you guys had Jimmy Webb on, and Will Lee and the band covered MacArthur Park.
Just a great moment
"I am lineman for the county..." Such a great song!
@@michaelrmurphy2734 Wichita Lineman.
@@giovanna8187 Makes me want to go there. You know Airbus has an outfitting center there, right? After they complete the plane, they fly it there to put in the seats and interior fittings.
@@michaelrmurphy2734 No, I didn't know that. I've just always loved the song.
From the kid from Timmins ,Ontario ,Canada that I first saw at Second City in Toronto doing his musical and sound effects duties side stage for the comedy troupe of the day
James Brown with the cape... a thrill, as the description says. Can't get better than that. Thank you for sharing these memories.
Great to see Paul doing so well!
Please do this every week for the rest of time! Paul is such a great storyteller. What a delight it is to look back.
Much love from Australia for you and the best band ever on TV. You and Dave need to come back!
This was lovely! And it's so good to see Paul!
Oh my god, I almost can't believe I had forgotten about the hiccups bit. I mean, I remember it now that I see it, and certainly the time in my life when I saw it, but it took seeing it to bring it back. Loving these videos.
Somebody needs to make a 3 hour Letterman documentary
When James Brown came out with the cape, instant goosebumps.
Wow next to Cybill was Christine Baranski, still going strong: Big Bang Theory, the Mamma Mia movies and now The Gilded Age I think she's incredible.
He had the greatest band on late night talk! He is a musician and a song writer. Very polite and passionate. Canadians are like that. I live in washington state. Miss him and dave alot. Norhing like that today. Keep the memories coming😅
These visits on the staff favorite moments are great! I didn't realize how much I've missed Paul. Haven't seen him much since the show ended.
Darlene Love on Letterman will always be a Christmas tradition!
LOVE Paul. One of our best Canucks
They were like family, and brought us viewers into it
So quick on that phone call.
I guess I'll/we'll never know, but I always wonder if Dave watches old clips, just for the pleasure and the belly laughs. I hope he does... these clips are a treasure.
This was great. Thanks for all the memories and the great, great music! 😎👍👍
Many thanks to Paul. Legend.
This was positively GOLDEN! Paul is great and I remembered everything shown! More clip collections would be fantastic! Kudos!
So many memories. And man do I miss seeing Darlene Love on the show at Christmas!
Wow !! Wow ! ! Wow !! the bit with the joke about Paul's Mom and the telephone call was Phenominal ! !
Thank you Paul for the great memories.
I was super excited to learn that The World's Most Dangerous Band would be at the Clemens Center on April 1 2017. At first I thought it was a joke but soon had my ticket. I was in the center , 2 rows from the stage. I am also a big KISS fan and had seen every drummer they had with exception of Anton Fig who ghosted on a couple of their Albums. Anton's work on Frehley's Comet and the LLS made him one of my favorite players.
Imagine my sleight disappointment at having the best seat yet I can not see Anton because of Paul's big organ...(His piano was there also...Hahaha ) Yep All I could see of Anton was the end of the drumstick in his right hand and his High Hat foot ! I had to stand up at the finale just to see him ! Awesome show and every band member signed autographs for myself and others. AND , Anton , who was settled into his seat on the Airport shuttle , Graciously stood up , exited the bus and stepped outside for a photo and autograph.
Thanks Forever D.L. and everyone at the LLS.
love you paul you are the best
This little interview vignettes are the best! Thank you Dave!
I miss Dave and Paul so freaking much. Anton, Biff, Larry "Bud", Chris Elliott. So many happy memories. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
🤣😂👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼Loved Paul's mom calling out Dave on the "it's I", NOT "It's me"👏🏼🙌🏼💖👏🏼🙌🏼💗💗👏🏼💗✌🏼
I'll forever be grateful to Paul and band for introducing me to "I love you more than you'll ever know"
I had a smile on my face the entire time I watched this video. Thanks, Paul.
The World's Most Dangerous Band !!!....I never tired of that.
Paul still has insane amounts of energy and life. And man he is talented.
this was amazing
This channel is what I’ve been needing in my life!!
3:06 Hilarious! (Forgot to roll up the sleeves on the dummy)
Paul was just as big a part of the show as Dave and that was ok with Dave and all of us . Paul and the band were the best . Love Dave and Paul and all the folks on the greatest late night show of all time.
The best "Staff of Letterman's" I have seen. Thx Paul, you are the greatest. ❤️
10:39 I've been looking for that clip for a while now! The Seinfeld part is still my favorite.
We love you Dave and Paul! Now, this is some of the heart and soul of the show on this video! Great stuff!
Always loved and still love Paul. Perfect compliment to Dave. And a damn great musician and director
This is just wonderful.
One of my favorite skits.." guess the datecode" as Paul would taste some packaged food blindfolded.
It's a cooky cooky staff favorite moments
