This came out right after Jimmy passed away, hence Matt being wheeled to face his nightmare of looking at Jimmy's empty drum set in the final scene.

LYRICS EXPLANATION: the literal meaning of the lyrics describes a person who died and went to hell. The lyrical self (the singer's voice) is either a demon or the Devil himself speaking to the dead person. Originally, "Nightmare" was supposed to be a concept album, and this track was the beggining of the plot. Of course, after the Rev died, it took a whole different direction, and now it's more about the Hell, or the Nightmare, that is living in a world without those who you love the most. At the end of the music video they show The Rev's iconic triple bass drum kit, which is now abandoned as he is no longer here, and this is the band's worst Nightmare.
From what I've read Mike Portnoy said the song also had to deal with alcoholism and addiction because that's something The Rev went through a lot before his passing.
Thanks for the explanation. Definitely the vibes I got from the choice of lyrics, visual and presentation. As I was watching the video it looks like a helpless soul navigating hell and witnessing other tragedies. Then the part of the song that says it hurts to know that you belong here was further confirmation that their choices is what sent them through their hell. Now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense.
This album would've been unreal if he didn't die during it. It would've been top 5 all time. Perhaps due to all the turmoil there are a few overly playful misses, but the main theme and feel and the high points are so good it's outlandish.
Next has to be Save Me from the same album "Nightmare. It's a 10 minute song, but It's so good that just passes by. And i recommend a lyric video.

I got to see them with Mike Portnoy when they came to Noblesville, Indiana fpr i think the event was called Xfest /Uproar like one of those all day music festival type things and A7X was the Main Event. And it was amazing. Mike was there and I loved it.

The reveal at the end always gets me. It just really gives meaning to when Matt says "fuckin' nightmare", because yeah I'm pretty sure losing one of your best friends and bandmates would feel exactly like a fuckin nightmare
I've always thought it meant it was Jimmy's fuckin nightmare (being in hell) especially with the lyrics+the ending shot
@@deminybs I don't really think it's that dark, as in, literal hell. I think the empty drumset is that representation in and of itself, absence of a loved one.

@@deminybs this particular track was written well before The Rev had passed away, there's even a demo available with him playing on an electronic drumkit and providing some backvocals. im not really sure myself, maybe they wanted to recontextualize it a bit.
@@feargmye but they changed the concept, and when they speak about nightmare i think they mean what a nightmare it is here to lose your best friend but ig that would make sense too
Buried Alive is a song by them you need to check out. It has a similar vibe to this song, but it's heavier in my opinion both lyrically and musically.

The riff durring the solo with the bass drum too, that whole part of the song is so good. Also, the riff after the solo is super easy to play, it's just open strings the entire time haha

So this video was the first video released after The Rev died. Hence why he isnt featured in the video and also why the last shot is The Revs drum kit. Was such an amazing album, filled with alot of grief also for the Rev, songs like God Hates us for example. I definitely think the next song off this albulm should be Fiction, has vocals from the Rev, the song was initially called Death and when the Rev handed in that song he said that is the albulm finished, 3 days later he died in his sleep

Another cool thing about this video is you see that everyone has their own part in it, the rev is gone but he not only had a part at the end but they panned over to a room in the beginning and you can see a drum set with tarantulas crawling on it. In the afterlife music video they had spiders crawling on the rev even though it was one of his greatest fears. I think that adding the spiders in nightmare was a little tribute to the revs personal nightmares. I might be wrong but that’s what makes the most sense to me
Have to do “Save Me” from the same album. One of the best songs Avenged Sevenfold ever wrote 🤘
Fun fact, this is the first single they released after "The Rev" died, the drums were recorded by Mike Portnoy, the drummer from the band "Dream Theater" whom The Rev himself was a fan of. I do recommend you check them out, maybe startn with something short and fun like "Panic attack" or "In the presence of enemies Part 1" (because 8 minute songs is actually kind of short for this guys) and then work your way to "Octavarium" (24 min) and "The Count of Tuscany" (19 Min). It is hard to get bored with this band and think you would love them as much as The Rev did.
But if you want to keep checking this album I do recommend "Save Me", it's my favorite one
Do you ever listen to octavarium? Are you not get sleepy on the first 3 minutes? Or going "c'mon guys, where the the crazy part?? This is 5 minutes already!!"?, or skip to minute 15 for get crazy?

@@atrevino90it happen vice versa to me, when I was young dream theater music was best form of art I ever heard, I was big fan of them, everything was masterpiece, every songs have deep meaning and epic, etc. Then adult world hit me, not enough time to appreciate music anymore, now when I want to listen to DT I looking for the one that epic from the start like The Alien, Pale Blue Dot, or The Count of Tuscany.
If the example is Octavarium, or maybe Sacrified Sons, like guy above said, so boring for me to wait to the epic part..
I'm a big DT fan, but when I first listened to this album, I didn't know who was playing the drums. After listening, I was sure it was Mike because of his playing style. Even from here it becomes clear what a great artist and drummer Mike is. I'm so happy these days because he's back!

Nightmare is one of my favorite Avenged songs (even though I like 98% of their songs anyways). This song is one of their Z tier ones though. It’s another “embodiment of the band” type song.
Next band Bring Me The Horizon
This was song #1 on their first album after their long time drummer The Rev passed away. I think this song is all about him.
he helped write this track. Watching Matt talk about the "Die! Die again!" part of the song is the best. He and Jimmy did it as a place filler until they had better lyrics. Then Jimmy passed so Matt kept the "die again!" phrase

I remember seeing the video premiered on one of the MTV stations (yeah, that long ago lmao) and being so incredibly hyped.
So much of Nightmare (the album) is about The Rev. I think Matt has said before that, the night The Rev died he asked to come over, but Matt and his Wife decided to just go to sleep instead. I flop between taking Nightmare as an allegory for the stages of grief, and blaming The Rev for what happened, and Matt blaming himself for it.
Anyway, highly recommend The Stage (the song, well, the album too but that's besides the point) for another song that's lyrically deep and showcases Matt's ability.

The drummer had killed himself and so the album Nightmare had a few songs reflecting the different emotions tied to that. Suicide is a very sensitive subject because you have those who are mad that a person has essentially given up or was too weak to keep fighting and then those who sympathize because of the mental health issues tied to it v
This song is basically the anger and acceptance portion of the five stages of grief. The line "It hurts to know you belong here" is knowing that the man they knew and love committed this heinous act and now he's where he belongs.
So Far Away was the song they made showing their sadness and love for him.

It was an accidental overdose, was officially ruled an accidental overdose, and has always been known it was an accidental overdose. He had massive issues with drugs and alcohol for years, and died by mixing alcohol with prescription pills and other stuff. He wasn't suicidal and didn't off himself, this is a stupid thing to start spreading around for whatever reason. You can literally take 5 seconds to google it.
@@omegashinra7672it's still killing yourself. You know smoking cigarettes kills you slowly, mixing drinks with pills is a risk that anyone who does it knows they are taking. And if they cared enough about their lives they wouldn't do it.
There's many things in life that can kill you and for some of us we are born sick so for someone to help death along it's pretty upsetting and a bit insulting because they take their good health for granted (assuming they don't have Cancer or something like that)

metallicas fade to black tells the story of a suicide. I highly recommend it, its a beautiful song
This is easily my favorite song from them. It's probably one of the catchiest chiruses and gut wrenching songs lyrically and the double bass chrous guitar riffs and them backround vocals in the chorus that sound like roaring chainsaws . One of the best solos and climax endings. It really has everything.
Not to mention revs handprints all over it and the haunting lyrics that can be used to think of him as well

Nightmare is basically a song about a mockery against evil people especially when they got what they deserved. "You should have known the price of evil, and it hurts to know that you belong here." Some people call it karma and Abrahamic faiths call it the day of judgement. "No one to call everybody to fear, your tragic fate is looking so clear" It is when evil people are dragged to hell for eternity after the day of resurrection is established.
