I don’t think they screamed together. I think he let it go when he just sings the word live. Don’t hear the scream. If anything that makes Shadow’s voice even better
I believe Afterlife was written fully by their drummer Jimmy " The Rev" Sullivan. They said he wrote something like 70 percent of the whole album in total

You are right. Hail to the King was the start to the “change” of direction for them. Matt knew it too. That’s why we also got a change to Bullet for my Valentine. They changed for the same reasons. But still kept to the sound in a way.
@@jimmygee3219 no no, he also had a serious issue with his voice around 2014 which got worse around 2016 until now. Listen to his 2018 performance of this song and you’ll notice how bad it sounds. Now, if you listen to one of the most recent interviews he explains he had a severe injury to his voice that most singers don’t come back from and ended up on complete vocal rest for a few months
If you really want a ballad, check out "Seize the Day" from this concert. Literally M. Shadows and Syn channeling Axl Rose and Slash in the best way possible.
This is the third single from their self-titled album. The song features a string orchestra and was written by the band's drummer, The Rev. Some of the songs in the album used strings instrument as background.
This was from the Taste of Chaos Tour back in 2008. I attended that show, and by far it still sits at the top for me. I’m glad you’re enjoying their music. New fans are always welcome.
@@1dudecrush Yes, this was at The Long Beach Arena, now Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center. Amazing lineup from bands like Bullet for My Valentine, Atreyu, Idiot Pilot, Blessthefall, and Japanese bands like The Underneath. I had the pleasure of watching The Rev perform live, and it’s a memory that’ll stick with me forever.
@@1dudecrush At the time, I didn’t really see it as a “once in a lifetime” show, I was just there to see bands I like and jump into mosh pits. I’m 34 right now and still doing the same thing. Going to see them again in October in Chula Vista; bought pit tickets.
its incredible watching or listening to their live performances and then the studio version to appreciate how good they are. They literally sound the same performing live
Critical Acclaim from this concert is really great too!! Has more of the drummer singing. Scream is fun too, and A Little Piece of Heaven. Might as well watch the whole show 😂
10:45 has got to be the most iconic moment of this band That awesome harmony between Shadows and Rev, right into the guitar duel, Syn nailing the solo, Shadows amping it up into a maniacal laugh while Syn just let's that final note ride holding the guitar with a single finger by the whammy like he just accomplished the impossible. Just goddamn iconic.
I'm glad you said the chorus sounds like a ballad. The Rev actually wrote most of this song himself and there is a quote from the DVD from the making of this album that most of the stuff he came up with was very poppy in nature. And it IS a violin. The song features an entire orchestral arrangement. There is a second version of this song from the Diamond In The Rough album that features all the cut parts of the orchestral arrangement.
Its been YEARS since I've watched this performance, i came here to see a good reaction from a pro....speaking of crushes btw lol. I like your reacts! Good stuff!
RIP The Rev. He was great and brought so much to his friends & the band. I'm guessing this was before M.Shadows had throat surgery. Now the sound is a bit different but still great
Totally agreed! And i love Zacky’s voice, he’s such a great singer as well. I love the Misfits cover, and I REALLY love the cover they did of Runaway with Zacky on lead vocals.
First and foremost I wanna say that I’m biased as A7X is my favorite band, but they’re easily top 3 best concert experiences I’ve ever had. And it’s top three because it’s hard to rank them. Secondly, I think you said something super interesting that’s relevant to the band to this day. As you said, they have a unique sound. I remember at the absolute height of their popularity hearing discussions about it, that essentially came down to “They’re too metal for rock and too rock for metal”. They were thrown into the nu-metal/ metalcore sort of category and even then it was still talked about. It just comes down to the fact that they’re themselves, and they’re not afraid to make stuff that their intrigued by. They’re so themselves, that that’s kind of a talking point currently. In the fifteen years that this came out, they’ve evolved and changed as a band. They’re set to release an album early June and it’s the first one in seven years. They’ve released two tracks and it’s much different from what you’re hearing now, and they get compared to the “old” sound. It’s the same with bands like Muse. They evolve, and fans get up in arms about it.
When you said the chorus felt almost like a ballad I was like YEAH EXACTLY because that's what makes A7X amazing (my personal opinon ofc). They include so many different elements in a single song like different instruments or choirs, strings, piano etc. and the rhythm & singing style always change, keeping you alive. That's why most of their songs feel like a rollercoaster ride. When the lyrics are also satisfying and meaningful the become such enjoyable art pieces.
You’re right about the bridge. They use an orchestra in the studio for a lot of their songs so it’s just a recording live. Ps. I’d sell one of my kidneys to be able to see just one live show with the Rev
Those screams from M Shadows sound more musical because he actually does put his voice into them, which gives them a distinct pitch. He's really good at those.
They've never been a band to shy away from more classical instrumentation. A lot of people are suggesting A Little Piece of Heaven, which might still be one of their most creative songs from an instrumentation standpoint. It's amazing. Just be aware though that the subject matter of the song is extremely vulgar, it's a twisted love song with murder and some even more disturbing things. They basically told The Rev to write the zaniest, whackiest song he could. Definitely worth a listen though. Unholy Confessions may be my favorite song from this concert too!
i literally unintentionally hold me breathe when at the end of the chorus matt does the scream with the laugh and syn just yanks his floyd rose to the max to match his scream like REEEEEEEEEEEE gives me goosies lol
The first concert I saw on a CD player, the performance was truly amazing, I really liked it, greetings from the biggest fans of A7X from Indonesia☺☺🙏🙏

as a singer, Matt's signature vocal characteristic is really rare. since long ago i've realized that metal singers, even those who would sound very similar to each other, is different. Matt's is even more distinct (from City of Evil album on), it's between singing and screaming. it's one of the main reasons i like A7X.
This is actually the late 2000s. 2008 specifically ... This song was recorded with a string symphony in the studio for the album that's being played on the PA for live shows
A7X means so much to me. Just got my first tattoo, and ofc it had to be their logo. They have so freaking many bangers, I really recommend that you listen to all of their albums, it is such an experience. I have 46 of their songs in my playlist that I think are absolutely amazing, and I don´t think they have many bad songs at all. The Rev is really missed though, he was a massive part of the band, as a singer and as one of the best drummers ever.
They had whole band with strings in studio for the string parts. You can actually search for Avenged Sevenfold - Afterlife making of, and see the whole process. It was fun.
Really enjoying your take on these tracks Ray! You should complete what I consider the other 3 bands from the "big four" of 2000's Metalcore & check out Avenged Sevenfold's contemporaries, them being: Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine & Killswitch Engage. There were other great Metalcore bands during this time for sure but those 4 were definitely making the most waves I'd say, especially from a "mainstream/commercial" perspective. All are incredibly talented bands with great vocalists & they've all been killing it since the early 2000's & are still going today. I would recommend starting with their older/most well known tracks though (anything from early 2000's - 2006 typically)
They made a webseries documenting the recording of the album they were promoting during this tour which was their Self-Titled album, I would highly suggest watching it. Its really funny and cool to watch their thought process. This song in particular was cool because the drummer actually wrote the lyrics and the melody that this song was spawned from, they also decided in this album to all do their own backing vocals. Prior to this album M. Shadows would do all of the backing vocals and then they would have to match his voice live. But they figured that recording their own backing vocals made more sense.
His voice is also very unique and nasally too, playing with it is just icing on the cake! Also they use a lot of symphonic sounds to the studio versions of their songs, their older ones anyway. They had an entire orchestra for "A Little Piece of Heaven". What you heard was definitely as violin playing in the background track!
This song is writed by the rev, the former drummer of avenged sevenfold. Maybe u must try gunslinger and a little piece of heaven from this concert too. Hope u enjoy it ❤
