Props to Mike Portnoy for stepping in to such a sad time for the band...The drum part during the guitar solo is one of my favorite beats EVER....RIP Rev...
RIP to the GOAT, he's the reason that I got into drumming. Portnoy is the dude for stepping in
Imagine having such a great drummer, that f’n portnoy stepped in for him!? Mike was my goat for the longest time so it just made it so surreal that someone that good filled in voluntarily
It's a shame that it had such a destructive consequence on Dream Theater though. Thankfully Portnoy is finally returning to Dream Theater after all these years away from the band.
I'm a 56 year old guitar player/ guitar teacher and these guys are the best. Harmonizing vocals, harmonizing guitars, beautiful guitar solos. They are the best thank you for reacting to them.
Polyphia look them up
Rock on!
Such a banger but sad knowing it's their first song without The Rev 💔
This album was being recorded when he died. Mike Portnoy, one of the Revs favorite drummers, stepped in and helped them finish the recording process and even toured with them the next year.
The rev wrote the drums
Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan passed away on 28th December 2009.
The song "so far away" was written as tribute (by the band) to him. The official video is a tribute to him too.
One of my faves...RIP REV 🤘❤
Another great video, guys! You should react to "So Far Away" by Avenged Sevenfold as it shows a different side to them since it was a song done for The Rev after his tragic passing. It's quite the tear jerker.
agree
Totally agree!
I personally feel like the really good song to recommend is buried alive from the same album
Jimmy passed away on December 28th 2009. "So Far Away" is a great tribute song which was originally written by syn for someone else but was repurposed for Rev. "Fiction" was the last song that Rev had written and he gave the CD with the demo of the song to his bandmates 3 days before he passed away. The nightmare album as a whole is a beautiful story and it being the first album released without The Rev makes every song feel more significant.
RIP James Sullivan. I was immediately drawn to Fiction, well before I knew any background about The Rev. I Just knew I like the music
Great reaction. Now I think your next Avenged Sevenfold reaction should be the song "Critical Acclaim". Both studio and live in the lbc versions are awesome.
Been a die hard fan since "sounding the seventh trumpet". Here's an essential list to get you started.
1. Warmness of the soul
2. Unholy Confessions
3. Chapter 4
4. Desecrate through Reverence
5. Second heartbeat
6. Bat country
7. City of Evil
8. Seize the day(highly emotional)
9. Trashed and Scattered
10. Almost easy
11. After life
12. Dear God
13. A little piece of heaven
14. So far away
15. The stage
Their new album is......different.. but highly enjoyable still. They have never been afraid to try new ventures and paths in music. I'd r3commend their new album only to advanced listeners with open minds to wildly new and disturbing concepts. When I say disturbing, I don't mean grotesque, I mean in a way that will literally make your mind go deep into existential thought.
If you'd like to hear the Rev playing and Singing, Critical Acclaim live is a great choice.
Great Reaction! I am a 68 yr. old mother of 3 (now grown) children. My youngest son has been an Avenged Sevenfold fan since he was in high school so I have heard a lot of their music, and actual enjoy much of it. When my son went to Marine Corps. Boot Camp right after he graduated H.S. their song "Dangerline" was especially haunting. Fortunately, my son did not experience that outcome. But, the song is still one of my favorite Avenged Sevenfold song because it pays tribute to all of those young Americans that did pay the ultimatel price for serving our Country. I would live to see your reaction to "Dangerline". As always, I look forward to seeing more of your reaction videos.
for next avenged sevenfold reactions u can try:
bat country (official music video)
beast and a harlot (official music video)
critical acclaim (live lbc version)
second heartbeat (live lbc version)
almost easy (live lbc version)
scream (live lbc version)
gunslinger (live lbc version)
first three are most popular from this this so you can do them first and others later
Avenged Sevenfold - So far away
Afterlife live in the LBC
'Afterlife' is worth some listening too. Lotta awesome changes. Cheers.
Avenged Sevenfold Has lots of great tracks love this band
This band has personality! Probably the greatest metal band of my time (I'm 35). The fact they are always headliners in every single metal festival prove it. Cheers!
A little piece of heaven is definately worth awatch. Not as bad as some people make out and if you can get past the gusto it's probably their best song. Its my favourite. But definately best to do the video version if you do do it! Keep up the great reactions!!
They could always just watch the Live in the LBC version
The first time I ever heard Little Piece of Heaven was live in concert. I fell in love with the melody by the time I heard "heater for your thighs".
Buried alive ❤ you'll be love it
The tattoo on his hand is in tribute to The Rev (it has his hairstyle and facial structure), and the video is inspired by one of his favorite films, Jacob’s Ladder - good call on the horror movie vibes! As others have said, I think you’d really appreciate one of their newer songs, Cosmic. It highlights all the best parts of Avenged Sevenfold in my opinion - their raw ability, songwriting, and production are on full display. Great video!!
Really hope you continue your journey with Avenged. They have a ton of great songs. Great reaction!
Afterlife is on one of their older albums and was primarily written by The Rev. That is a great one for you guys to review... I'd recommend the Live in LBC version of it, so you can see The Rev play and sing in it.
Afterlife and A Little Piece of Heaven in LBC version they are incredibly fantastic, their live performance is one of the best I've ever seen
I've watched this video and reactions soooo many times. Never realized the light on the drums at the end. Great job! Great review and welcome to the Death Bat family
The tattoo you said in the beginning of the video was the band logo but with The Rev’s hair style!!!
Actually the tattoo u saw first is actually the rev or the rev deathbat.
For example i have the rev deathbat all over my chest so it's big 😊
Thanks for reaction AVENGED SEVENFOLD NIGHTMARE ❤❤
You have to watch So Far Away by them, it is literally a song that pays tribute to The Rev!
Happy New Year. Thank you for reacting to a song which reflects my life since May 2022
Next reaction should be - Buried Alive! Love the reaction of my favourite song from my favourite band!
The Tattoo in the beginning is the reference of their first drummer, James Owen Sullivan.
I heard that Matt & Brian get their tribute tattoo 2 weeks after Jimmy passed away.
Who tf told yall to not listen to ,what I'm guessing, A little piece of heaven??? A mf masterpiece from an all time great band period forever!!!!!!!
A7x foREVer!!!!!!!
Hot damn! That was great!
Happy New year guys
I loved seeing both of you headbanging to this song, but please please please do COSMIC from their new album, such a beautiful song🖤
The beginning sounds like the theme from nightmare on elm Street
Gotta do a live reaction!
You can hear their influences for sure a great combo of Metallica and Guns n roses ect.
YES !!!
You really should give "a little piece of heaven" a listen. It showcases the amazing songwriting talent the drummer had as he primarily wrote all the music for it
it's a great song. But it's not really a song I'd recommend to anyone who isn't a huge A7F fan.
@johnwoodworth9127 I would. However I will agree to stay away from the music video if you're new to a7x and not used to the way they like to push boundaries visually. Lyric video or studio version is the way to go.
The LBC version is awesome!!!
Absolutely!!! Great song ..... and video
I love the song but it’s just too weird if you’re not a fan of the band already imo, seen a lot of reactors turned off of the band after it
Proper tune that!! 🤘
I saw these guys live on this tour and I swear it was the best produced show ive ever been to, and ive been to TOOL several times.
The vid has callbacks to all their other music vids for songs like Afterlife, Bat Country and So Far Away. Its based on Jacob's Ladder which was one of Jimmy's favourite movies.
This one is STILL heavy in my workout playlist 😤🤘🏽
The tattoo at the beginning of the video is the Rev as the band logo
The drummer who took over was from Dream Theater.
You should check them out.
Pull Me Under is a good song to start with.
Great reaction! 🫶🤘
The drummer is Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Adrenaline Mob, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, Neal Morse Band, Neal Morse, OSI, Metal Allegiance, BPMD, BigElf, Liquid Tension Experiment, John Petrucci, etc.
Please do more of them you will be pleasantly surprised
The video is based on the film Jacobs Ladder, which was The Rev's favorite movie. It refers to the mechanism that angels & demons travel to go from Heaven and Hell to Earth
love and blessings! sevenfold is the best!
True! According to the internet.
December 28th of 2009 was the day the REV passed. Do- So Far Away as a great tribute song to him. It is emotional
Synyster Gates is an insane guitarist. Please check out the video of him playing gypsy jazz, it is amazing 👍🏼
The tattoo was the bands logo. And the skull was the rev.

"If I'm Remembering Correctly, The Original Drummer Had Written A Number Of The Drum Tracks For The Album And They'd Used A Different Drummer"
You're correct, Phil
Rev did indeed write the drum track for this song but had died before he could record it and then band had got Mike Portnoy from the band Dream Theater to fill-in on drums
Originally in the music video, specifically for the performance scenes, they'd wanted to have Mike included in the video, but he'd declined, feeling that the fan would've felt like it was too soon after Rev had passed to havr a different Drummer in the video
Have loved this band since the early aughts. Can’t really say a ton more than others have already, so I’ll just toss in my opinion that I’d definitely tune in for more A7x tracks. Doesn’t even matter to me which ones! Like ‘em all.
Gives me House On Haunted Hill vibes 1999 with Geoffery Rush and Famke Jansson was also a Vincent Price Movie.
Membangkitkan energi setelah mendengarkan lagu ini ,,💪
If you wanna' see why everyone loved The Rev - as well generally getting to react to a great song with an awesome solo - it's worth checking out the Live at the LBC performance of 'Afterlife'
If I'm correct, this video clip was made for The Rev, 'cause it was based on his favorite movie, "Jacob's Ladder", that's why at the end of the clip there's his drum set. You can also see the video clip "So Far Away", all the clip and the song were made to honor him.
I would also recommend you guys, those songs: Dear God, Buried Alive, This Means War, Shepherd of Fire, God Hates Us, A Little Piece of Heaven, Second Heartbeat, Unholy Confessions, The Stage, Seize the Day, Bat Country, Not Ready to Die, Requiem, Heretic, Planets, Welcome to the Family, Natural Born Killer, Afterlife, Critical Acclaim
Great reacts!! I really enjoy your content! Kip it up guys!!! 🙂
That tattoo is of their late drummer ❤
The Rev passed away on 12/28/09, found the next morning. RIP
Avenged Sevenfold - MIA ❤️🔥
Another Badass band 😮
yall gotta check out live in the LBC it’s studio quality
"Bars & Barbells" is actually a bar, since the Bars in Bars in Barbells has a dual meaning, that is, both a weight bar and a lyrical bar.
“Save me” is by far their biggest masterpiece!
On point! Yes!
You know it's a masterpiece when a song is longer than 8 minutes.
Dream Theater start this trend with "Pull Me Under" & "Metropolis".
Some great songs of theirs that will be more digestible for you: Afterlife (written by the Rev), Critical Acclaim, Bat Country, So Far Away, Buried Alive, and The Stage. Their live songs from Live in the LBC are truly some of the best you'll ever see. Once you're a bit further along you can try A Little Piece of Heaven and anything from their newest album, which are very different (EXCELLENT, but different).
Critical Acclaim is 🔥 the lyrics are deep, so maybe do the lyric video and then live 😊 thanks for the amazing videos friends
Buried Alive. You've gotta react to Buried Alive guys! Incredible....
You have to see the video of this synchronized to house lights for Halloween from a couple years ago
You guys gotta react to So Far Away. It's their tribute song to The Rev.
Reacting
( Avenged Sefenfold Live At LBC ) was even crazier because their musical performance was really good 👍
Please do their Live at the LBC songs next
Please do "so far away" next
Thanks!
Thank YOU Dave!
Love this album. Curious which song to stay away from bcuz The Rev poured his last ounce of life into this album.
You need to hear their song Cosmic!!!
Alter Bridge please
Boring
Yes I am sure you are!
Check out Critical Acclaim Live in the LBC for a great example of the Rev.
You guys should check out some stuff from their Live in the LBC show. Easily prime A7X. 👌
then now you should try "so far away' tribute for the drummer, and "fiction" last drummer song before he's death
11:25
Interesting Facts for you Phil and Sam:
There's a number of references to previous Avenged Sevenfold videos in this video. for example:
The priest walking beside the gurney that vocalist M. Shadows was on, had originally appeared in the music video for "Seize The Day"
The tarantula crawling one Rev's drum kits and guitarist Zacky Vengeance ballroom dancing with the Skeleton had originally appeared in the video for "Afterlife"
As for the depiction of this video, it's based off the movie "Jacob's Ladder" which was Rev's favorite movie
The only Avenged Sevenfold song worth reacting to.
I personally think their best work was the first 2 albums they made. Second Heartbeat is probably my favorite song by them. Check out the live in the LBC songs.
I highly recommend to check out a little piece of heaven. The song was written by Rev.
Please do so far away, a little piece of heaven, seize the day, afterlife, and critical acclaim. All by avenged sevenfold
Finally
Next should be A little piece of heaven
12/28/2009 RIP The Rev
I had to look up who drummed on this track. Mike Portnoy. Of Dream Theater fame. I mean letsssss GOOOOO. Gawd I'm so late to the party.
The song you were talking about is most likely "A Little Piece of Heaven". Great song musically, but it is definitely twisted. lol Makes it fun to watch people react to it, though. :p
You need to check out Five Finger Death
Punch another great band lots of great tunes
one of there best songs is afterlife but if you are wanting to react to that, then you are best off checking out the live in the LBC version because it is by far there best live performance to date, and it was the last live performance they did with the rev
That awkward moment when I know that “the song yall told us to stay away from” is more than like a little peace of heaven just me specifically knowing what the video is
🤟🤟
You're all right, this song is water.
You have to listen to Buried Alive
The hand tattoo is there drummer I have that same tattoo but as a back plate
you can pick your nex AV7 song is maybe bat country. you will love guitar solo. and also RIP Rev
Three days after Christmas 2008.. and yes he wrote alot of the bands riffs and melodys reat easy king 🤘🫡
